they are dangerous, and they can be tamed .
aka welcome to watching me lose my mind! most of the stuff i have right now if from really old planning for a version of this rp on the old forums, so i'll be doing a ton of updating lol. if you're interested feel free to stop by and chat, and any questions and help is welcome! even if you're not planning on joining the final product i'll enjoy the company if you wanna chill for a bit! i'm hoping to have this up sometime next week? but we'll see how long my motivation lasts!!
old info (wowowowowo so cool, so interesting) Takes place in a fantasy kingdom that has been invaded and conquered. The old monarchy was executed and the country is currently under the control of the military generals who sieged the capital. There orders are to watch over the Kingdom and quell any uprisings or rebellions that may try to reclaim the capital. The kingdom is known for its dragons- and the knights that tamed and rode them into battle. While almost all of these knights met their tragic end on the battlefields- three managed to escape with their lives- saving the clutch of dragon eggs that sat unhatched in the palace during the siege. Now- almost 7 years later the wyrmlings have grown into young dragons and are ready to find their riders- and the three knights of old are seeking out young members of the growing rebellion to tame these beasts and reclaim the throne.
In typically fantasy kingdom fashion- there are multiple fantasy races that live inside the kingdom including- humans (both ur average joes and mages), dryads, merfolk, and shifters. Humans have mages who are able to access a specific pool of magic, while the other races have more concrete/set out magics.
Magic for humans is split into 5 pools:
- Vitality (fire/electricity/shields)
- Tranquility (water/ice & snow/emotion control)
- Euphoria (air/storms/color and light)
- Balance (earth/magnetism/limited control over life)
- Charm (hexes/potions/enchantments)
Magic for the other races is more set in stone. Dryads have he ability to grow and wilt plant life, merfolk can breathe on land & in water, and very powerful ones have a charm effect that can lure others into a trance like state, and shifters have the ability to turn into one specific creature.
the dragons There are 13 different types of dragons- mirror, double, aquatic, flame swallowing, armored, wind, flame, frost, star, bone, golden, poison, and climbing. You better bet this is what ima be working the most on lol. Here's what I have so far.
Mirror Dragons - small, delicate dragons with the ability to change the color of their scales.
Double Dragons - average-sized dragons with sharp features and two heads, breathes fire Aquatic Dragons - sea serpent-esque dragon with no arms, able to breathe underwater Flame-Swallowing Dragons - average-sized dragons with twisting horns and a belly colored like fire- able to swallow flames and breathe out molten lava after Armored Dragons - giant dragons with the toughest scales of all the dragons, built like a tank and fights like one too Wind Dragons - thin dragons with giant wingspans, able to fly for hours without the need for rest Flame Dragons - your average fire breathing dragon, flame resistant Frost Dragons - average-sized dragons covered in both scales and fur, able to withstand sub-zero temperatures and can also breath out frost Star Dragons - dark colored, nocturnal dragons, are blind but able to move around using echolocation and other heightened senses. Bone Dragons - large dragons with a tough, bone-like exoskeleton instead of scales, bug aesthetic, it's bite brings decay and infection Golden Dragon - smaller dragons who's scales are laced with precious gemstones and veins of metal Poison Dragons - average-sized dragons with venomous fangs, immune to most poisons themselves Climbing Dragons - average-sized dragons with wings that can only glide, prehensile tails, and hooked claws
what do i plan on changing? alot! so if you just skimmed the info about, that's totally fine! again feel free to share any ideas you come up with, i'd be grateful for any kind of help!

rp mechanics planning
There is going to be one new dragon rider for each dragon type- and this is who the storyline focuses on. So there would be 13 "main" character spots. The three knights who train them could also be claimable? Or they could be more npc-esque with set personalities but no main rper. honestly leaning towards claimable rn. Side characters are also available to make- so for any character outside of the main 13 that you'd want to rp just ask me if it sounds good and you can create 'em.
The average age range for the dragonriders was originally 16-25, but ima prolly change that to 18-30 just out of comfort. I would be okay with maybe one or two of the riders being younger- just ask me first and we can talk thru it.
Rpers would control both the rider and dragon of one character. Dragons have personalities too, and not every dragon and dragonrider match is going to get along well.
I'm thinking in terms of literacy like semi-lit? While I can right paragraphs, I know that a lot of people don't like that, so I'm just saying for right now- if you can right more than one-liners and with decent grammar you're fine. All I ask is that you give you're partner something they can reply to!
The dragonriders can be any race, and are hand picked from the rebellion by these knights. That means, they prolly have some kind of talent/skill or have lead successful missions in the past. Use these when creating character backstories! go crazy go stupid! if you wanna do something more out there- shoot me a dm or just ask me in person and we can discuss how it would work!

dragons & dragonriders
Dragons usually live around 500 years and are fully mature around the age of 10. Once laid, eggs can take 1-4 years to hatch depending on the conditions. Dragons younger than 5 are considered wrymlings- and are still growing physically. During the end of it's first 5 years of life- a wyrmling begins to fly. Between the ages of 5-10, dragons are fairly social creatures- seeking out companions in both other creatures and other dragons. At the end of this time period- they reach their fully height and stop growing in size. From ages 10-100 dragons slowly become less social- often collecting treasures and creating a "horde" guarded by the companions they made earlier in their lives. When these hordes are complete, they become solitary. They spend most of their lives among their treasures- venturing out only to hunt.
Dragonriders originate from early heroes who ventured out to slay dragons that attacked their villages. It was said that after these long and hard battles the heroes would spare the dragons life and in return the dragon would create a bond with the human- granting them long lives and heightened senses. However- the bonds were only created with dragons between the ages of 5-100 before the dragon retreated to its horde. And while these bonds lengthened the lifespan of the riders- it also shortened that of the dragon. Most bonded dragons only live to about 250, half of their typically lifespan. They also don't build up the same size of hordes as "wild" dragons, and often a small treasure room in a rider's estate will suffice.
Long after these first riders came to be, the monarchy of [insert kingdom name here] hired young pairs to protect their estates- and these riders gradually gained power and titles as they proved themselves again and again in battle. Eventually it became common practice that the King/Queen would have a totally of 13 knights (each with a different dragon) serve under them and protect the kingdom. To protect this tradition- the royal family kept 1 egg of each dragon in a hatchery in the palace at all times. A nursery and training grounds were also added to take care of wyrmlings and train new riders.
The process of becoming a rider is not an easy one. Like the heroes of old- riders must first best their dragon in a contest (whether, physical, mental, or something else entirely) and the dragon must willingly create the bond. There are cases of riders loosing their contests and the dragon still choosing to create the bond, however these are extremely rare. It is typical fashion in the palace for these contests to be held when a dragon reaches age 7, and if they fail to bond with a rider by the time they are 12 they must leave the palace.
While there are only 13 rider knights that serve under the monarchy- there are typically more than just 13 riders alive in the kingdom. Sometimes these riders bond with dragons that already have a rider knight in the thirteen, and sometimes they just choose not to serve under the monarchs. However, during the invasion and in the time since the fall of [insert kingdom name here] dragons have been hunted down and killed- dragonriders much the same. Even more concerning- some of the riders have sided themselves with the invading armies and are actively working to keep hold on the capital.

random plot stuff
Lots of character conflict- not all of the 13 chosen riders get along & not all of the 13 dragons get along. Petty fights and drama because these people are being forced together and just expected to get along. The 13 were chosen from the rebellion- so they are expected to continue helping said rebellion. expect many fun missions of espionage, thievery, and assassinations!
Many dragonriders chose to side with the invading forces- even more the generals who hold power over the capital have forced some of the fallen knight's dragons to work for them. The new 13 are expected to rise up and overthrow these generals- but will the be strong enough???????????????????
Many of the commoners dislike the dragonriders- even now that they failed to protect them. Part of the 13's job is to restore public faith in the riders.
Maybe one of the 3 Knights who survived is secretly working for the generals? or even one of the 13 themselves- either way they'll soon be forced out of their safe haven and expected to care for themselves and their dragons without their mentors.

eyyy im glad haha. rn im trying to figure out political stuff because im super bad at it and younger me was very ambitious with the political plot lines !!! i like the idea of having the conquering generals in temporary control of the country- but I also was thinking of maybe having them establish a puppet ruler. also im not sure how many generals would be in control- I know originally i had planned there being 13- one for each rider but idk, that just sounds excessive.
also i've been working on better dragon descriptions so those should be up soon- but if you have any suggestions feel free to shoot them at me!

So hereβs what my brains came up with
There is one high king/ruler who lords over clans/towns/etc that are spread over the country/continent/land mass
Each town/clan has its own regiment of dragon riders but are required to send one to serve the high king so if there are 13 clans that makes up the 13 riders
For some reason the high king is working with the invaders or is unable to do anything or something so a rebellion happened and now the riders are stuck somewhere in the middle

i actually really like the 13 clans/counties/city-states idea with a higher unifying monarchy. maybe we could even have dragonrider stereotypes for each of them? like for example something like: in [blank] city the dragonriders tend to bond with the more armored and muscled dragons- would be a common thought?
i had the high king/monarchs getting executed when the invading forces sieged the capital- along with most of the thirteen riders (hence why they're seeking out new recruits), but maybe we could do a plot with someone in the royal family aligning themselves with the invaders? maybe that's even how they managed to overtake the capital? and that person could be sitting on the throne- or assumed to be once tensions calm down?

ooooo ok good good
so did we want to do like city-states for the 13 or like families/clans? i think both could be fun but they're slightly different. if we do families/clans maybe they could claim to be decedents from the first/early dragonriders? but also doing city-states gives more variety in the types of people to become riders. like they could be anyone from an urchin on the street to like a countess lol.

They could be city-states sort of governed by families claiming to descend from the original riders?

|
Post by lazy penguin on Jul 8, 2021 22:07:08 GMT -5
mmmMMmmmm! that's a great shout! maybe the families kinda expect their decedents to be riders- like they'd be the ones to send their children to the palace to try to bond with the dragons kept in the nurseries? so while it's a lot harder for average people to travel and bond with dragons it's still possible- but the ruling class who claim to be descendants of early riders have a lot better access to them?

pay-wall the dragonriders
ooooo okay so. then maybe the invading forces allied themselves with a specific family? like the head of one of them was the person to betray the monarchy and give up the capital- maybe it was a political play for power since they weren't in direct lineage but were still very powerful? I kinda like the idea of them being a child of one of the 13, since the 13 themselves wouldn't be the ones in direct power over the city states but they still could be from these leading families? Or maybe a sibling?
and then if someone wanted their character to be from this city-state that is now on top it could create some very interesting character conflicts

Hm the idea of one city-state grabbing for power is always fun. And I like the idea of one of the 13 riders being from this family - then theyβre conflicted with familial bonds and oaths of duty

Ok ok ok. so i've been trying to think of like gimmicks for each of the city-states (ex. one's economy is based entirely off the fishing industry, one has a big focus on the arts, just random crap like that) but it's kinda hard to come up with 13.
i have- water based city (maybe even inspired by venice?) factory/industry heavy city snowy/mountain city? academic city with big colleges and knowledge/intelligence based culture cave/underground mining city?
but yeah idk. i need more and i kinda wanna design a map so these very terrain-centered cities can fit in, but also i kinda don't want them all to be tied to geography? so idk- feel free to give any ideas, I defo need them haha

So we donβt necessarily have to have each city based on some form of trade if you want
A few can be but others can be more like⦠various trade hubs or whatever. If that makes sense

sorry for disappearing, i ended up taking some extra hours at work this weekend to cover for a friend !!!
true true- i'd like each place to have at least one notable ~thing~ about it just to separate them and give the world a bit of flavor- but it doesn't need to be centered around trade. it could maybe be anything from like a famous landmark to maybe like a famous story or urban legend

yeah i'm also out on the job search since while the place im working pays very good its just not fun- plus i keep asking for less hours and yet im still working 38 hrs a week as a part time employee :/
here's what i kinda have for city-states & their quirks (mostly just concepts im throwing at the wall)
1. Capital - funky fresh, lots of people, its a capital- thats cool 2. city on the foot of a mountain - its a cool geographical location, lots of cool weather patterns 3. seaside city - similar to mountain its cool geography my man. part built as floating platforms? water canals instead of city streets? 4. college/academic city - focus on the arts and knowledge 5. haunted city - idk i just like the idea of a city that was built on top of like a famous battlefield or something so people are always claiming to see ghosts and stuff 6. underground city - i like the idea of a city in a cave with a bountiful mining industry- we could maybe combine this idea with the mountain city tho 7. crossroads/major trade city - maybe even bigger than the capital? kinda a hub of roads- most main paths will lead you through this city 8. city with a major garden area? - idk the flower aesthetic is just cool plus a city with great parks is nice 9. culinary capital of the country - if u want great food- come here 10. ??? 11. ??? 12. ??? 13. ???
