The rest of the evening passed uneventfully — mostly. The boys finished their dinners and returned to their rooms. Unlike Notus, Atom showed absolutely no interest in the climbing structures or perches. He explored every inch of the floor, then promptly crawled into the bed provided for him and went to sleep.
Trey followed his lead. After showering, he climbed into bed and spent some time reading while Atom explored, and shortly after his wyvern fell asleep, Trey settled down for the night too.
The next morning was a little more hectic. Trey and Atom woke bright and early, but once again Austin slept through his alarms. By the time Trey got him up, they'd missed half of breakfast and had to rush through their meals to make it across the yard to school on time.
Throughout the morning, the baby wyverns proved quite distracting. If they weren't climbing all over their human, demanding food or attention, they were interacting with each other on the floor. But instead of this being the lesser of two evils, it proved to be worse as multiple little fights broke out among the babies — most often between those of opposite elements or, surprisingly, the same element.
It was even worse in the cafeteria at lunchtime, for ALL the babies were there instead of only a dozen at a time, and now they had something real to fight over: their food.
Trey spent the first half of the school day quite distraught. Atom never started any fights, but was the target of several other wyverns, at least one in every class, all morning. He wasn’t even consoled by the fact that Atom won every fight he got in. To Trey, this just seemed to egg the other babies on more.
Currently in the cafeteria, Trey was doing his best to keep Atom from any more fights. He did this by convincing Atom to sit on his lap as he hand fed him mice. Atom seemed fine with this so long as the mice kept coming. He wasn’t even twenty-four hours old yet, but his appetite was enormous.

That first afternoon as a WyvernRider was a very different one for Remi and Malaya. The girl spent much of it on the go, trying to keep her wyvern away from everyone else. But what had started as simply a cautionary measure to prevent Malaya from picking more fights proved to be a very effective bonding exercise.
It was almost like having a reactive puppy. Remi would set off in a random direction and Malaya would follow, keeping close but not too close. The girl would be looking around, marveling at the beautiful landscapes and buildings, while the wyvern sniffed and nosed around, and even hunted a bit in the forested areas. Anytime Remi spotted another person and/or wyvern, she would abruptly change direction to avoid them. If she was quick enough, Malaya wouldn't even see the "threat." In the instances when she did see it, Remi simply kept walking away, calling her wyvern. Malaya would always follow, much to Remi's surprise.
After a while, Remi started talking to Malaya. Nonsense stuff, mostly commentary on the things she was seeing. At first it seemed Malaya was paying no attention at all, only to realize after several minutes that Malaya had not only been listening, but also talking back in little chirps, squeaks, growls, and barks.
Her vocalization fascinated Remi. She didn't sound exactly like any other animal, but similar to many. And the more Remi listened, the more she felt as well as heard the response. A bark was praise, or excitement; a chirp was a question, or curiosity; a squeak was surprise, sometimes with a hint of trepidation; and a growl was anger, frustration, or triumph. Remi learned to understand these by watching, but also by listening to the feelings being fed to her through the bond.
Remi didn't want the experience to end, but eventually she decided it would probably be a good idea to introduce Malaya to their room. She just hoped her roommate was elsewhere.
☆ ~ ☆ ~ ☆
Her wish was not granted. Rachel was in their room, and worse, she had also bonded a fire wyvern. The sparks when the two came nose to nose were instantaneous abd literal. It was hard to tell which one started the fight, but it didn’t end until half the furniture was scorched and it took three teachers to break them up.
Neither girl was blamed, though Rachel and her posse (they had shown up at the start of the fight) trued their hardest to pin the blame on Remi and Malaya. Thankfully, the teachers seemed to hear none of it and instead initiated some changes.
First, they moved Rachel out of the room and put her with the fourth member of her team in the room beside her two blonde friends. Remi protested this, but the teachers assured her it was normal. After the first day, a lot of students got moved around so they could be with their newfound teammates.
Second, they sent Remi to the media room while they repaired the fire damage in her room. It was minimal — neither baby could produce fire on its own yet, but together their combined body heat (higher than that of the other species') had been enough to set any flammable thing they'd touched in their tousle alight. It didn’t take long, and soon Remi and Malaya were making themselves at home.
After that, the only drama came at dinner. Malaya didn't pick any fights, thankfully, but she became very territorial of their table and food. Every time she ate a mouse, she would pause their meal to chase away the closest wyvern — which happened to consistently be the air wyvern at the table next to theirs. By the third time, the student bonded to the air wyvern was constantly glaring over the tables at Remi. In the end, she finished her food as quickly as possible, then took what reminded of Malaya's meal back to their room and fed her wyvern there.
The rest of the evening passed with Malaya exploring every inch of their room — she even tried to get airborne a couple of times — while Remi flipped through all the books on wyverns the school had provided, reading only the sections or chapters about fire wyverns. It was very enlightening.
As soon as the sun had fully set, Malaya's seemingly endless energy... ended. She found her bed — a.k.a. what had been Rachel's bed — made a nest in the pillows, and went to sleep. She didn't stir once all night.
Neither did Remi.

Life with a wyvern wasn't that bad. Elizabeth had been practicing for this day since she was little. Ever since she had been old enough to follow instructions, her mother allowed her to help in caring for Trivvial. She cleaned his scales when they were muddy, brushed his teeth whenever there was a larger amount of build up than normal from his meals, and helped to keep his sleeping place tidy and neat. While the majority of the chores were still done by her mother, since she was his Rider, as the years passed, Elizabeth had been able to do more and more. This allowed her to practice everything she would one day have to do for her own wyvern.
Yet all that practice had been for an already grown adult wyvern. An adult that was more or less self-sufficient and matured in both their personality and behavior. Hatchlings, like many baby animals, were much more work. Elizabeth had braced herself for the worst, knowing that if she had gotten an air or fire wyvern, she would have her work cut out for her, since they were the two that were more energetic and temperamental. She had hoped for an earth wyvern, since they were more level-headed, but she had lucked out with Nerida. The little blue wyvern was a typical baby; inquisitive, adventurous, and never seeming to tire. Upon returning to her dorm, she set her hatchling down on the floor, curious to see what she would do. Caution was displayed at first, but once she determined there was nothing in the room that seemed threatening, Nerida was off to explore. With a smile, sat down on one of the chairs and watched. Nerida divided her time between discovering her new surroundings and getting reassurance from Elizabeth by returning to her for scratches. It didn't take much longer before she gained her confidence and no longer wondered back and forth.
While she might not have been as energetic as some of the other wyverns she had observed, Nerida still eagerly took to the shelves built into the walls. She climbed them with the lack of grace any newborn animal displayed. She figured it out faster than most other species would, of course, but it was still amusing to see the process to get there. From perch to perch, she jumped, growing more accustomed to the obstacles and enjoying the view the heights gave her. It didn't last for long, however. In five minutes, she returned to the floor and wandered back to Elizabeth's side. Elizabeth made a mental note to ask one of the teachers about the possibility of adding some sort of pool for her. Water wyverns preferred swimming to climbing, after all. Surely there could be something she could add to the dorm until her wyvern grew bigger.
With the exploration done for, the pair settled into the chair; Nerida taking a nap while Elizabeth read through the care manuals she received. She had read through the one on basic care when she had gotten her egg, but now she focused her study on the parts pertaining specifically to water wyverns. Each element had their unique quirks and needs, and she hadn't read over all of them until she knew which one she would be getting. Of course, she would read the sections for the other three elements, but that would be for another day. There she stayed until the dinner bell tolled.
She would have been lying if she said she wasn't a little hesitant to go to the cafeteria. Not because she was nervous about her or Nerida's sake, but rather she didn't know if she would run into Remy. They were Teammates, so she knew she shouldn't try to avoid the other girl. However, after their first interaction that afternoon, she wasn't that enthused to meet up with her again. She wanted to end the day without another wyvern picking a fight with hers, if possible. It would be a challenging feat to accomplish right now in such a crowded space, but she did all she could to make sure that Nerida had a space to eat without being too close to any other hungry hatchlings. There was still the occasional nosy neighbor that tried to sneak a mouse away, but a growl or swipe from Nerida usually kept the thieves at bay. Still, she didn't linger longer than they needed to. Elizabeth didn't scarf down her meal. She ate at a normal pace, but she made sure that once all the food was consumed, she collected her tray, trash, and wyvern to leave. This wasn't because of any anti-social reasons, for she returned every greeting she was given as she walked through the crowded cafeteria. Right now, she wanted to spend the rest of the evening bonding with Nerida. She could socialize more tomorrow in-between classes.
And that was exactly that plan she followed. Once she returned to her room, Elizabeth did nothing but spend time with Nerida. She explored the connection they had in their minds, welcoming the wyverns presence and sharing her own in turn. Words weren't exchanged. Instead, she worked on communicating in the same way her wyvern did; using pictures and emotions to convey her thoughts. It was certainly a challenge, but by the time they went to bed, she felt like her efforts had helped to strengthen their connection.
~*~*~*~
The next morning found the pair up and in the cafeteria for breakfast. She made more effort in talking to the other girls she shared classes with. They chatted while in line getting their food, and continued to share details about yesterday after all the students parted ways to care for their wyverns. Unlike last night, she wasn't as concerned about running into Remy or her fire wyverns. She would have to spend time with her at some point today, so if it happened now, she wouldn't avoid it. However, she didn't exactly go looking for her Teammate either. She didn't really look around for anyone, since she was already deep in conversation and eating with two of her classmates.

Malaya woke Remi before the alarm, so Remi retaliated by dragging the little wyvern under the blankets and snuggling with her as if she were a puppy. Surprisingly, Malaya more than tolerated this, and they ended up falling back asleep until the alarm went off.
They got ready together — Malaya practicing her flying while Remi got dressed and packed her school bag — and then they headed down to breakfast. It was almost an exact repeat of dinner the night before. This time, however, Remi hot lucky abd scored them a corner table, so there were fewer wyverns for Malaya to chase off.
Remi didn't see Elizabeth until after the breakfast hour, when everyone was heading out to get to school. She tried to hang back and let the majority of students leave before following, but she didn't wait quite long enough and ended up in a bottleneck of students in the main lobby. She heard through the grapevine that a trio of fire wyverns had gotten into a fight just outside, effectively blocking the rest of them from leaving safely.
Remi wasn't too bothered by the delay. She was a little worried about getting to class on time, but Malaya was being very good. There were only about a dozen first-years stuck inside — and therefore, only about a dozen wyverns — and Malaya wasn't trying to fight with any of them. She had growled and shown her tiny, needle-like teeth to a few, but that was it.
So far, so good.
Girl and wyvern spotted their teammates at the same time. Later, Remi would realize her getting tense and nervous was the cause of the fight, but in that moment, it looked as if Malaya just chose violence. She took one look as Elizabeth and Neridia and lunged forward to attack the little blue wyvern.

By the time breakfast was done, Elizabeth was more focused on the first class of the day rather than being on the lookout for possible fights. She and the other girls she shared classes with were discussing the possible topics that would be covered in English class. For the small group, English was a relatively easy class, so none of them were really concerned for it. It wouldn't be until later when reports were assigned that they felt like they would need to put in the most effort.
Elizabeth had let Nerida walk beside her as the small group left their table to head to their class. However, it was the same time everyone else was trying to leave too. As she stood in the middle of the crowd, she kept a close eye on her little water wyvern. If the other students began to close in too much, she would be ready to scoop her up so she wouldn't be trampled, and before Nerida had a reason to bite a few ankles in retaliation. It was because she was eyes were down and not scanning the surrounding bodies that she didn't see the fire wyvern until it was on her.
It took her a few seconds to realize what was happening. Then a closer look confirmed everything she needed to know. It was Malaya. Elizabeth did her best to clamp down her anger and frustration, stifling the urge to shout for Remy to control her wyvern. Instead, she took a step back and let Nerida handle herself.
Nerida had sensed Malaya's approach, but not quick enough to avoid the fight. She was, however, able to turn and meet the lunge head on. She was ready this time, and meet her opponent with a growl. Nerida made the first jump, teeth aimed for a hold on Malaya's throat.

Nerida followed through with her first lunge, even though she missed. However, when she didn't get that first contact, the blue wyvern poised herself in a way to defend herself in case the display of hesitancy was a trick.
Elizabeth was actually surprised and impressed that Remi had managed to stop her wyvern. She had seemed to have no control over Mayala yesterday, and had expected it to take much longer than this for her to get a sort of order between them. Granted, she wasn't sure how well Mayala would listen, but she wasn't going to take any chances. She stepped over to Nerida and crouched down. "Here, Nerida," she called, extending her hand. Picking her up with her in defensive mode wasn't the smartest idea, for any wyvern/Rider pair. So she just made her presence known, and sent the coaxing through their bond. Nerida wasn't quick to turn her back on the fire wyvern, but when no move for an attack came, she slowly crept close enough for Elizabeth to pick her up.
"I see you've figured out how to get her to listen to you," Elizabeth commented once Nerida was safely on her shoulder. She glanced over at Remi, her anger fading now that no fight had broken out. "That's good. I've heard that it takes some students weeks to get through to their fire wyverns."

So maybe there was some talent to this girl. Elizabeth knew that no one had to be from a Rider family or know everything about wyverns in order to be a talented one themselves, but it helped when a student had some background and experience with them prior to attending. She wasn't often a judgey person, but after yesterday's fights, she had her doubts about Remi and Mayala. Today, she seemed to be proven wrong. Not that she minded, of course, for she wasn't offended to be wrong about underestimating someone's skill.
"Wyverns tend to deem who are friends and foes for themselves," Elizabeth said. "So don't be too discouraged with it. Fire dragons tend to make those choices for themselves more than the other elements. You have to remember that while she may be a hatchling, she still has better senses then we do. She might be able to detect a possible threat before you can. Babies just have a harder time explaining what they sense and why they feel threatened, so they tend to act before asking, in a sense. Fire dragons are more vocal in that area than most."
(And if there's anything there that might be wrong, let me know. XD)

(I don't think she knows, no. I think Remi told Austin her grandmother taught her about fire wyverns, but I'm not sure Elizabeth heard about it. And from the way Remi was having trouble yesterday, I think it's safe to assume she believes Remi is a student with no wyvern experience at all. XD It'll be a good growth moment when she realizes/is told she was wrong. XD)
Elizabeth nodded, not arguing the change of topic, as they did need to get going. "What class do you have first?" she asked, just because they were going to be going the same way until they reached the classrooms. That, and while the crowd did thin down enough for them to walk out of the cafeteria, they were still more or less stuck beside each other.

Austin wasn't minding the extra chaos around the little wyverns brought. Sure, he wasn't a big fan of having Notus pounce on his that morning, aiding Trey's attempts to wake him up, but other than that, he was enjoying the energy they were all bringing. As far as the friendship between Atom and Notus was concerned, they seemed to be getting along just fine. Notus, being more energetic, might have been more annoying towards the larger earth wyvern, but there were occasional moments Austin witness the two playing in mock fights. Well, he assumed they were mock fights since neither one of them ended up hurt, nor were they displaying any signs of true aggression.
The same couldn't be said for all the other hatchlings that were roaming around the rest of the school. It was hard to focus on the morning's lessons with all the wyverns about. While many were content to sit with their Riders, many were not. They were everywhere. Students tried to maintain some order, trying to recall their hatchlings through their bonds. Some were able to do it, others weren't as lucky. To Austin, it was amusing. Notus was one that wanted to wander, but his wyvern at least had the common sense to keep his exploring confined to his desk. He climbed up Austin's clothes, jumped up and down from the desk, and only hissed warnings if another wyvern got too close. Only two fight broke out with Notus before he learned it was easier to avoid conflict by staying closer to Austin, and up off the floor.
Lunchtime was worse. Adding food into the mix was not the best idea, but everyone had to eat. Fights were breaking out all over the place, and even though Notus did a good job staying with him while they ate, it didn't prevent others from coming over to pick fights with him. It made lunch a slow process, and he did have to be extra careful of how he left the food for his wyvern, but Austin still wasn't seeing much of a problem. They were just being babies, and nearly all babies, at least in the carnivore kind, displayed similar behaviors when it came to claiming food. "They're worse than flies in the summer," Austin commented, amused and shooing away another air wyvern that was trying to be sneaky, sniffing at his pants from the floor in hopes of finding a way up.

Trey's plan worked great - until he inevitably ran out of mice. Each baby wyvern was only allowed so many at a time to prevent overfeeding and bloat, and they were forbidden from giving the babies any human food, even the meat products. That meant it was time to put Atom back on the floor - a.k.a. the war zone.
Although, looking around, Trey saw that it was beginning to die down. Atom wasn't the only wyvern who had finished eating. Most had, and now that food had been eaten and therefore removed from the situation, it looked like many of the babies around them were ready for a nap. So, with only a trace of trepidation, Trey set Atom on the floor.
Atom sat down, still licking his chops to get at any remaining trace of his lunch. Then, spotting the strange air wyvern sniffing around Austin's leg, he lunged forward with a growl. The air wyvern turned tail with a yelp and retreated to hide behind his human partner at the next table. Satisfied, Atom yawned hugely, curled up under Trey's chair, and took a nap.
Trey let out a quiet breath and finally turned his focus to his own lunch.
* * *
On the other side of the cafeteria, Remi was not having it so easy. The mice had been eaten and most of the baby wyverns were settling down, yes, but there seemed to be one big exception: the fire wyverns. They, more than any other species, seemed to be wide awake and full of energy. Remi knew from the books she had been reading that it was because it was the noon hour - a fire wyverns time of power. She wasn't seeing much power at the moment, but perhaps in baby wyverns "power" simply translated to "energy." And lots of it.
Remi was trying to eat, but she had to stop every few bites to drag Malaya back to their table. For once, the little wyvern wasn't picking fights - much. Mostly, she was just trying to play. But her play style was proving too rough for air wyverns; water wyverns kept turning their noses up at her, unwilling to play at all; and many of the earth wyverns were trying to sleep. There were no fire wyverns nearby. Remi had specifically avoided them, as Malaya had been picking fights with any she saw all morning. And of course, they were the only ones likely to make a good playmate for her little firecracker.
In the end, Remi used her sweater as a playmate instead. She dragged it along the floor, encouraging Malaya to chase and pounce. When she did, Remi let go and left her to "attack" the sweater while she ate a few forkfuls of food. When Malaya determined the sweater was good and dead, she asked Remi to bring it back to life by dragging it around some more. It turned into a rather exhausting pattern, but it allowed Remi to finish her food and Malaya was able to let out some of her energy. So, it was a win-win nonetheless.
