Yeah, I oversimplified it. For me I guess it's more... there are main villains like Tigerstar who had mates and children, but they weren't integral to their origin stories the way that Mapleshade's was. As edgy as things like the "Mapleshade was a cannibal" theories were prior to her backstory being revealed, I do feel like that could have been more interesting than the way it ultimately played out, if only to set her apart more from every other character in this series who had a mate and kits from a different clan. I guess the closest villain to an origin like hers is, weirdly, Ashfur, but even then it took a follow-up series retcon for him to be recast as a proper villain rather than someone who only "loved too much". I'd argue Thistleclaw is closer. Mapleshade isn't motivated by rejection from her mate, she's motivated because she lost all of her loved ones in a violent flash(be it by death or by disownment). This is very much like Thistleclaw who also became consumed with rage after losing the one he loved in a horrible accident, though he had a better support system(which is probably why he didn't go so far off the deep end). Oh, that's a good point, too! I think what unites a lot of the cats who wind up permanently in the Place Of No Stars is not having a support system that's able to pull them back from the brink.

That, and luck. I'm sure there's a world out there where Blackfoot was killed by Scourge and went to the Dark Forest for his sins as well as a world where Thistleclaw becomes leader and upon receiving his nine lives from Starclan, undergoes a revelation like Blackstar did and becomes an honorable and measured leader. In the end, a lot of it comes down to a roll of the dice on WHEN a cat dies and whether they had enough time to make something of their lives. I suppose it proves the adage that one should live life as if every moment was their last.

I still think that she is best described on the last sentence of her page in The Ultimate Guide:
Mapleshade could never make the Clans suffer enough for what had been done to her.
