no hand, no mark; one hand, one heart a soulmate rp
-- ❋ --
everyone knows that the one clue to your soulmate is the mark drawn upon your right wrist. when a person doesn't have a right wrist, what do they do? at a classic academy for mages, such a person works hard to keep up with their classmates with just one hand to work their magic. their classmate mocks and teases, but when the two of them are assigned to a duet performance, things between them start to change.

JANINE GONZALEShigh school student || 19 years || she/they Janine is relatively short and stocky, with brown hair that hovers above her shoulders in waves. Her chestnut brown skin is peppered with moles and acne scars, of which she has grown fond and proud of. Her eyes are a dark, dark brown. She wears glasses with thick lenses and numerous ear studs (she's been contemplating on getting a nose ring, if only to shock her parents). You can almost always find a cigarette in her left hand. Her right arm has been amputated right above the elbow, and she usually ties off her jacket off at the elbow.
This lass is quiet and withdrawn, growing cynical and defensive over her high school years. She prefers to keep to herself in order to read or draw. Janine gets lost in her own head a lot, preferring the worlds in her books over the world she has to occupy now. While she has a scattered few friends, she tends to hold people at an arm's length in an effort not to get tricked or hurt or mocked. She is, however, learning how loneliness tastes, now living at a new college far away from the people she used to know. Despite this, she will hermit herself away in her room unless prompted otherwise. She is a workaholic, and will bury herself in her work.
As a young child, an arterial disease had taken form in her right hand, causing tissue to die and requiring amputation. Janine grew up knowing nothing about having more than one hand, knowing nothing about the soulmark she might have once had. Her parents, while well-meaning, were practical people who reassured her that she didn't need a soulmate, telling her nothing of what they might know of her soulmark when she was a child. Janine grew up believing so, and not understanding the big deal around soulmates. (Her parents, after all, were soulmates, and they were very unhappy with each other.) This did not protect her from cruel pranks and invasive questions from her peers growing up, however. Her disability also inhibits her ability to perform magic, which requires specific gestures of the hands and fingers to generate. She's had to come up with creative solutions and work harder than anyone else had to in order to make it to where she is now.
She works two jobs to afford her place in the university dorm room. Her preferred elemental magic is water.

Name: Aoi Chiba Age: 19 Birthday: June 12th Gender: Male Personality: Aoi is known for being a friendly person among his classmates, often willing to help out the younger years with learning a spell. He is secretive when it comes to his personal life, only telling select people about it, but even then it is either not in detail and still select information. He enjoys teasing people, especially Muse A, but usually there is no malice behind it depending on what he says. He is protective of the people he cares about willing to go to any lengths to keep them safe. Aoi tries his best to hide his true emotions when he can, often choosing to fake being happy if he has to. He doesn't desire to burden people, due to his upbringing, he desires to deal with it on his own then bother getting other people involved in his problems. He has tendencies to be forgetful when he is rushing that can range from forgetting homework to how to do a certain gesture for spell. Something he is embarrassed over and when it occurs he can be seen hiding his face in the hood of his jacket or in his scarf. Likes: Aoi has a soft spot for small animals, such as cats, birds, mice and squirrels. Aoi loves to read, often seen reading when he has the free time to do so. Aoi enjoys using his magic inside and outside of school, sometimes using his magic to play with animals he comes across, though he makes sure no one is looking when he does. Aoi has a fascination for soulmate marks, having spent some time researching them but as lately stopped as he keeps finding repeating information and it has caused him to grown annoyed over not finding his soulmate yet. He loves hot drinks such as coffee and tea, and loves to pair them with sugary sides such as cookies or cake. He enjoys learning fire magic, both for the warmth the element provides and for the many uses that come with the element. Dislikes: Aoi dislikes dogs of any kind, regardless of their size. Aoi has a dislike for being alone, so he often is with others even if he isn't talking, just to have that feel for others being there. He dislikes his family, often feeling forgotten by them, so he avoids speaking on them as much as he can, unless he trusts the person he is speaking with. Aoi despite his fascination of soulmate marks, he has grown a disliking to his own as he fears he won't find his soulmate. Aoi dislikes the cold, especially snow, as he gets cold easily. He also holds a slight dislike for cold drinks, using magic to warm them up. He hates groupprojects as he has had bad experiences of people not pulling their wieght, Backstory: Aoi is the middle child of five children, so he often as overlooked by his parents. He didn't mind however as it just gave him to practice his magic. Growing up when he did have the chance he would ask his mother about her mark and how she and his dad had meet, finding the soulmate mark's fascinating. As he grew older the longer he went not finding a person with the same mark as him, had him start to worry he would never find them, having heard stories of some people going their whole lives never finding their soulmate and in the rare cases some never even had a mark to begin with. Aoi developed his fear of dogs when he was 7, after he got bit on his left wrist by a dog that he had been petting. Since then the male as been jumpy whenever a dog is around. He tries to keep this hidden to where only close friends know of his fear outside of his family. As he got older Aoi has found ways of avoiding dogs, plotting routes out to places where he knows he won't encounter them usually but there have been times he still ends up running into them much to his displeasure. Being the middle child his parents often weren't around either tending to the older kids or helping the younger ones, causing Aoi to have to become self reliant, this also was a cause for his dislike of being alone. It also fueled his desire to find his soulmate even more. Someone that he was meant to be with and was meant to be with him, to him someone that wasn't going to leave or make him feel forgotten. As Aoi attended school, he meet a classmate with one hand. Since then he has taken every opportunity to tease and mock them for their disadvantage. He works in a bookstore to earn money for his schooling. Fears/disorders: Cynophobia(fear of dogs) Habits: Bites his nails when nervous, hides his face when embarrassed Appearance: Aoi is a lean male with a height of 5 feet and 9 inches. He has light blue hair that has pink tips, with bangs that hang in his face. Aoi has hazel eyes. He has a heart shaped mark on his right wrist, his soul mate mark. On his left wrist is a scar of a dog bite. His nails are short to being nonexistent due to a habit of biting his nails when he is nervous. He wears a glove on his right hand when he isn't performing magic to his the soulmate mark on his right wrist. He is often seen wearing or carrying a jacket or scarf, due to his tendency of getting cold. He has black rimmed glasses. done for now

nono its okay, it is just how i am, i will apologize when i make a mistake) Aoi groaned as he pressed his face into his pillow, trying his best to ignore the alarm going off telling him it was time to wake up. He buried his face further into the pillow the longer the alarm went off before growling as he sat up, fumbling to find the phone on the night stand by the bed, squinting so his vision wasn't as blurry. The blue haired boy sighed as he felt the smooth screen under his finger tips, grabbing it he switched off the alarm.
Aoi frowned to himself as he got out of the bed. He moved to proceed to do his morning routine, having figured out the lay out of the room at this point in the school year. Heading back to the bed he grabbed his glasses and slide them on to his face, pushing them up to a comfortable position with his finger. He gazed at the heart shaped soulmate mark on his wrist. "Stupid," he mumbled as he grabbed at a black glove that sat on the night stand and put it on happy to cover the mark.
He headed for the door, placing a scarf into his bag on the way over, as temperatures were supposed to be on the warmer side he felt no need for the jacket. He made his way through the dormitory , stopping in his tracks as realization struck him. He forgotten his phone and dorm key in the room. He looked behind him as he thought. Would I have time to go back and grab them? Choosing to risk it he rushed back and grabbed his forgotten items, waking his roommate in the process, by his knocking on the door to be let in. Now having everything he headed for his class.

(( in that case it's completely alright, don't even worry about it c: also i meant to say before, aoi is absolutely adorable))
-- ❀ -- Janine looked up at the clock ticking away on the wall of the classroom, then back down at the doodle currently decorating the margins of her notebook. Just a few ticks away from enduring another hour of Basic Elementals: An Intro Course. Good grief, she didn't need an intro class on something she's been working on since she was twelve! They really couldn't bump her up to the next level? Couldn't she have taken a placement test like she did for Spanish or something?
She sighed heavily, loosely sketching the head of the black squirrel that was peeking in curiously from outside the window. They weren't realistic drawings at all, just quick squiggles to capture the shape and movement of the twitchy creature. Janine liked drawing the tail. So fluffy. But after a few more scrawls, her pen dragged over the paper, leaving only an indent where ink should be. Janine frowned. With a small circle and flick of her middle finger, she magically coaxed out the leftover ink inside her pen to the nib, some of it leaking onto her notebook. After inspecting it, Janine figured she had at least two or three squirrels worth of ink left in there.
Janine looked back up at the clock, then at the door. Curious. Aoi was usually here by now, plopping into the seat next to her and driving her up the wall before class started, but it was almost class, and no Aoi. Janine felt a little relieved - while Aoi's teasing was no where near as malicious as the ones from high school (nothing could possibly compare with high school), it still stuck a barb right under her skin. She couldn't help but feel a little resentful. The guy seemed perfectly chill with other people, even friendly and likeable. Why did he have to go make fun of her all the time?
Well. Janine's gaze dropped to her right arm - or rather, the lack of it. She knew why.
As time ticked on, her eyes wandered over towards the door. Will he actually get in late? Hah. Maybe she'll have something to tease him about this time.

thank you!! I love Jamine she seems like she will be an interesting character) Aoi entered the classroom, slightly panting, the male having gone to the wrong building. Hs face having a slight tint of pink to it out of embarrassment and from running to make sure he was on time. Heading to his usual spot in the chair by Jamine. "Morning hand solo," he said, flashing a smile. "How are you this morning?" He hoped he could get away with her not teasing him for almost being late, he was embarrassed enough as it was, sides it wasn't like he intended to be late, but then again no one intends to be late to things, it just happens.
Aoi looked at the doodles in her notebook. "Huh you're pretty good at that despite everything," he commented, not meaning anything bad behind the comment, but the way he said it, was open to interpretation. He glanced out the window to see the squirrels, his gazing lighting up a bit as he observed the creatures out on the tree. He glanced back to the girl beside him, waiting for her reaction, sure he enjoyed teasing her, but her reactions where always interesting to see, they seemed to change depending on what kind of teasing he did.

-- ❀ -- "Oh," Janine said, clearly disappointed as Aoi slid into the seat next to her right on time. "Well look who made it." She scrawled an angry squirrel holding a knife. "My morning was going fine, until you showed up. Running late, apparently. What, forgot your little book of one-handed jokes?"
At his comment about her doodles, Janine finally looked up at him, face deadpan. "Wow. Thanks," she said, voice dripping with dry sarcasm. "You know you don't need two hands to draw, right? Heck, you could draw with your toes if you really wanted to. There's a guy that paints solely with his mouth. Can you paint with your mouth?" To be fair, Janine cannot draw with her mouth either, but she wasn't going to admit that.

i agree, i love the dynamic that is already starting to form, especially the angry squirrel with a knife doodle i dont know why but reading about that made me laugh) Aoi's face flushed red with embarrassment, covering his face with his hand slightly, it wasn't like he was expecting her not to call him out on being late he just had the hope she wouldn't. Once recovering he awkwardly cleared his throat. "Well, Lefty, I need to keep my them original for ya, can't just reuse them all the time it'll get stale," he commented with a teasing grin. He was getting fairly usual reactions this morning it seemed much to his disappointment. "I wonder if there are one handed artist jokes?"
"Well I can't say I've tried using my toes or even my mouth to draw," he commented with a shrug. "But why would I have hands to draw with if I choose to." Truth be told he was a terrible artist, his biggest art accomplishment was when he learned how to make a stick person correctly. Since then any art endeavor always resulted in failure and him throwing it away.
"Well how about you? Can you draw with your toes or mouth," he asked looking to her. He felt he knew the answer but better to confirm rather then make assumptions. "You know maybe you should quit at being a mage and go into art. You would make more for yourself in that kind of work then with magic," he continued with a shrug, as it wasn't a secret that it took a mage both hands to cast their magic, and he had never heard of a one handed mage, at least to what he could recall to.

((thank you! angry squirrel with a knife is like, janine's essence))
-- ❀ -- "I feel so special," Janine deadpanned, tapping the pen against her notebook impatiently. What was the teacher doing, taking so long to start class? Aoi seemed disappointed somehow, as if he was expecting her to react differently. It grated on her nerves - she wasn't some showpony, some classic morning entertainment. Why could he just go watch anime on his phone or something like other guys?
"Like, just a thought," Janine said, "I wouldn't joke about one-handed artists. Unless you are a one-handed artist. Which you are not." She suddenly didn't feel like drawing anymore. "I can't draw with my mouth, but I could if I really wanted to," she said with a defiant frown. "Stuff like that just takes practice. Like everything else." That was her motto - she could adapt to anything, as long as she took the time to practice. Things that seemed painful to do one-handed at first, like tying her shoes or buttoning her coat, now felt like second-nature. (Then again, she one day realized she didn't have to make her life so difficult and very quickly changed to slip-on shoes and velcro coats, so. Adapt or die.)
She squinted at him. "Dude, you're like, the last person I'd go to for life advice," Janine said, trying not to let her irritation seep through her words. It didn't work. "You don't know anything, you're in beginner's magic too." Why did this guy think he knew her more than she did? Knew her abilities and her limits more than she did? Janine felt very close to saying something out-right mean.
She didn't get to, though, as the teacher finally got started and she could actually focus on something other than how Aoi's comments got riled her up. Something about a team project. Great. Janine hated group projects. What lazy, annoying mage-wannabe is she going to get stuck with? She saw Aoi out of the corner of her eye, and a sense of dread fell over her. Oh no. No no no, please, fate don't you dare... -- ❀ -- ((then they get assigned together x3))

This is on mobile sorry if it isnt as long) Aoi tilted his head as she observed her. He was about to say more but then the teacher had showed up preventing him from continuing the conversation which was probably a good thing. He turned his attention to the teacher as class began. Tapping on of his gloves fingers before taking off the glove and set it on the desk/table. He was curious to know what they would be learning today, hopefully they will cover something new and not just be reviewing once again today what has been taught so far.
Aoi cursed under his breath. Why did it have to be a team project. He thought to himself, he hated those. People not pulling their weight but then getting the same grade as the rest of the group, it got on his nerves. It happened enough times in middle school and high school that he had long since reached his limit to put up with it. It got to the point that he tried often to let teachers just do the project on his own. Maybe I can see if I can just do it solo or something. It might not be to hard to do on my own. He had no desire to work with someone else, but the teacher hasn't give the full gist of the project so he couldn't be certain on if he could do it himself.
As partners were getting called, so far he noticed it was people with contrasting elements, fire studnets were being laired with water, earth with air. His gaze flickered to the remaining water students, if he had been deducing everything correctly. He froze when he heard his name being paired with Janine. Fate you cruel son of a bitch. He sent a brief glance to Janine before it went back to the teacher quickly. He was definitely going to see if he could get a different partner.

-- ❀ -- When she heard her name and Aoi's called, Janine quietly groaned and thumped her head against her desk. Great. Just great. More cracks on how my one hand is gonna mess magic up. She turned her head slightly to give Aoi a dour look, catching his brief glance. She locked eyes with him for just a brief moment, and she could see it in his eyes - he didn't like the idea as much as she did.
"It'll be a creative project," the professor was saying, apparently excited by the prospect of watching a bunch of college freshmen show off their 'creativity.' "You may present an artistic piece, do a performance, or even show a video of you and your partner performing magic together." The professor gestured in large, sweeping motions. "The most important thing is teamwork. You'll notice that you've been matched up with partners of opposing elements - figuring out how to work your magic together without one cancelling out the other will be the most challenging and the most heavily graded portion of your work." The professor then smiled, as if such an announcement hadn't just made Janine's life 6000% harder. "Good luck! You'll get about ten minutes of class time to find and discuss the project with your partner before we move on to today's topic: common mistakes in magical gesture."
Once the clamor began to rise, students switching seats and beginning their groans about the project, Janine immediately stood up. She was going to find the professor and ask - if not beg - for another partner. Any other partner. "No offense, Aoi," Janine said, trying to find any words that were less offensive. "But I don't think we'll work well together. Besides, I have a feeling you wouldn't want to work with me either."
She then began striding over to their professor, not giving a backwards glance at Aoi.

Aoi opened his mouth before shrugging. That's fair. he thought to himself. He was happy to see he wasn't the only one keen on them being partners and even happier that he didn't have to be the one to ask for a different partner. He thought about what the teacher said in regards to the project. It sounds like it will be interesting though, trying to find ways to not cancel out the opposing forces. He watched calmly as she walked away before looking around at the other students in the room, most seemed happy with their pairings. A few didn't thankfully so maybe he or Janine could switch after all.
Aoi deciding that the problem would get taken care of turned his attention to what the teacher said in regards to the lesson. He didn't catch it and was wondering if it was something new or not. Turning to one of his classmates to ask them if they had heard what the lesson would be for the class period. It was on of the air magic users, he couldn't recall the boys name in the moment but he knew he had other classes with him. "Hey did you hear what the lesson was?"
lol sounds like a professor i had last semester)

-- ❀ -- Janine shuffled her feet as she impatiently waited for her professor to take forever to answer another student's question. It must be a dumb question, to take so long to explain! Finally, though, before another student could nab the professor's attention, Janine cut in: "Professor, I need a new partner."
The professor turned to her with a polite smile. "Ah? Whatever for?"
Janine silently wondered if the professor has ever learned her name. "This kid you put me with - he's constantly making fun of me," she said. "Of my hand," she added, hoping that it would help her favor.
With a tilt of the head, the professor said, "I'm sorry to hear that. Is your current partner hurting you in any way? Intimidating you on a frequent basis?"
Janine was caught slightly off guard. "I mean... no. It's more annoying than anything." She frowned. "But the stuff he says is like, at the very least ableist. Or ignorant."
The professor gave her a patient smile. "Remember, in the real world, you can't always choose your teammates. This is a good chance to open communication, to give your partner and yourself a chance to learn about each other. Teach your team that you can, indeed, break the mold."
Janine scowled. "Isn't it your job to teach him stuff like that?"
The professor laughed, then turned to another student. "Yes, your question?"
Janine groaned, scrubbed her face, then spun around to march back over to Aoi, who was talking to some other kid. "Yo, Aoi," she said, tapping his chair leg with her shoe. "Guess we're stuck together. What do you want to do for this stupid project?" -- ❀ --

Aoi turned to look at her after feeling the chair being kicked that he was sitting. "Hm?" Seeing it was Janine he tilted his ehad at what she said. "SO we are stuck huh," he commented. "Welp so be it. I don't really care in regards to the project. A video or performance would probably be fun though," he said with a slight smile. He might as well be civil with this, seeing they had no choice. Could be worse options for a partner I guess.
"How about you though, Lefty," he asked. "Do you have a preference for one that we do?" He had heard there was art piece, maybe it would be that but God would they get a bad grade on it. Looking at her curiously, for her opinion on what they should do for the project. "And when would you want to meet to work on it?" He wanted to get as much planned out before hand so he could properly work it around his other assignments for classes and his job.
He gave a quick thanks to the boy behind him and turned back around in his chair to be seated properly. He slide the glove back on to his right hand seeing that it he probably wasn't going to be actually casting magic today since it was just a lesson on what can be done wrong in gestures from what he took away.

-- ❀ -- As Aoi slipped on his glove, Janine's eyes were drawn towards the movement as his right hand. "I have no idea what to do," she muttered. "The only art thing I'm good at is drawing." She plopped back into her seat and tapped her chin with her pen. "And how are we supposed to combine fire and water? Are they supposed to not touch or something?"
She started a few sketches out on paper, trying to visualize it. Maybe a dance of some sort, where ribbons of water and fire twirled around each other, avoiding each other at all costs. But wouldn't the water risk dripping onto the fire? Would being so close to a heat source cause the water to evaporate? Janine began chewing her lower lip.
"My abuela used to say the only times water and fire cooperated with each other would be in cooking," she said, rubbing her eye. "Soup. The lovechild of fire and water." Janine let out a dry laugh. "Wouldn't that funny? If we made magic soup?"
Janine turned back to him. "Let's see. I've got a couple jobs, though they've got pretty consistent schedules," she said, pulling out her phone to double-check. "If you're down for some late nights, I'm open Tuesdays and Thursdays after 7pm. The library's usually open 'til, like four, so we can reserve a study room there if you want." She scribbled something on her notebook, then tore off the paper. "Here's my phone number. This is only for planning purposes, got it? Any jokes and you're blocked for life."

Aoi thought for a moment. "Well it's just to like balance each other? Not overtake the other," he said resting his chin on his gloved hand. "So maybe they aren't to touch, but be able to get close to one another without affecting the other, so sounds like you were on the right track," he closed his eyes as he spoke. Trying to picture it in his head possible ways that it can be done.
He sighed as he was unable to think of anything that would work, each idea ending in failure. "Hm? Soup," he said with a frown. Magic soup? He wanted to comment on that but felt it was probably for the best that he didn't. Which was probably smart. He tapped his finger a bit.
He listened to her speak, though he zoned out a bit. "Late nights work, the place I work at usually closes at 8 pm though but I'll head right over to the library," he said. "If that works for you." He blinked in surprise as he took the piece of paper with a teasing grin. "Aww and here I thought I could give you a whole stand up act using it." Taking out his phone to quickly put the number in so he didn't forget. Hiding that he saved her contact id as Lefty.
"Here," he said as he quickly wrote his down and handed it to her. "There's mine."
