I am once again attempting to start a horror/mystery RP :0 I have had my heart set on a RP based around the Killer Clown craze of 2016 for YEARS, but it just never seems to pan out. But since I have a pretty solid idea of what I want I figured I'd give it another shot! Of course this is just a general idea, and if you have something you think might be better please feel free to let me know!
The RP would be set in a small town and would focus around a small group of college aged students. The town would be relatively quiet, but also known for having a few unsolved murders throughout it's years. Though by the time of the RP many of them would have been forgotten. A girl within their group would turn up murdered, and while the town Sheriff thinks it was an accident the group doesn't think so. The main part of the RP would have the group solving the mystery behind the murders, and finding the person responsible for them. All while trying to avoid getting killed themselves.
My initial idea is to make the killer someone who was cheated and scorned by someone in the main characters families, making their motive revenge. But all of this would have gone down when the MCs parents were young, which would force them to do some digging before they even figured that out. Even their parents wouldn't remember the poor treatment of this person.
A couple notes for the RP:
- The main characters in this RP would be college aged students, who have either returned to the town for some reason or have been there for years. They'd all have some sort of connection, whether that be friendly or antagonistic would be up to the specific RPers!
- The killer in this RP will not be supernatural, but they can certainly think that way until they get more information on them.
- This RP would be a small group RP, with specific traits for people to build a character off. ex: The Leader, the main person who believes that this death wasn't an accident and is trying to get everyone else to help figure out the mystery behind it.
Again, if you like the idea but don't like a specific point, please let me know! Things can change or we can add something else. The mystery behind the killer would be the main plot, but I'd love to have some smaller plots within the group and among the townspeople.

Here are my ideas for the roles! Can be added to and changed. These aren't the ones ones, just the ones I have in mind so far.
[/font][li] The Leader: the main leader of the group. They are convinced the death was not a suicide or accident, and are determined to bring everyone together to figure out the truth.[/li]
[li] The Believer: a steadfast supernatural buff who's only in this because they think it's a ghost. They are all for looking into it, but only to prove that a ghost haunts this town.[/li]
[li] The Skeptic: they don't believe in ghosts, they don't believe it was a murder, and they don't believe this is worth their time.[/li]
[li] The Journalist: they are with the group to keep track of everything that has happened. Interested mostly in the mystery. (would be my character so I can update the front page with what they write down/keep track of)[/li]
[li] The Innocent: the first person to be killed. A NPC that is connected to everyone within the group.[/li] [/ul]

That would be wonderful! How do you feel about what I have so far? I'd like to hear your general opinion on it :0

Small town settings work good for revenge plots! For RP's like this, I think an air of mystery has to be maintained in order to keep interest. If all the RPers know who the bad guy is, or what exactly is going on, it loses the intrigue. It's like reading a novel and having the end already spoiled for you - there's not much reason to keep going. Balancing who in the rp knows what and having the characters try and piece information out of each other (and the rpers trying to piece everything together at the same time) adds another dimension to it. College-kid age is a good idea because it gives them more agency, and I like them having to dig into the past because it facilitates fleshing out the characters + their backstories and the relationships between families.

Yeah, keeping the mysteries a mystery certainly seems like the hardest part. I think that's why things rarely pan out the initial times I tried to get this put together haha. Because of that, I was considering setting up a Discord Server. I think if the RP was treated a bit like people do DnD, it would work out better :3
I think it would also be better for planning, since only a select few would see the plans. Unlike on here where anyone can see.

I love RP discord servers! I find they also encourage chatter between members, which helps flesh out character relationships and investment in the rp.
yeah, my favorite rp i've ever been apart of was a mystery rp where the person who ran the rp left us in the dark about a lot of things and we were sort of trying to figure things out alongside our characters. I guess it is very DnD-like in that way, but that's part of the fun! How are you thinking about starting the rp off? Also - setting-wise, is there anything going to differentiate the town from other small towns or is it a generic Taylor Swift song town? I love the idea of having the characters (or some of them) convinced it's something supernatural, like a Scooby Doo episode, when it just ends up being a sadistic person (or people). Maybe something could have happened in the town history that would have inspired ghost stories and an unusual interest in the occult among town residents.

Yeah! That's what I had been aiming for, though I am a bit hesitant since i've never run a RP like that before. But I LOVE the idea so I really wanna give it a shot.
Since I want to base it around the killer clowns of 2016, I was thinking of having an abandoned amusement park in the town. Why it was shut down will play into the original story of the killer. I was thinking that all the younger adults and kids in town wouldn't know the details, and as such have built it up to be a supernatural hot spot of sorts haha. What happened there can be a mystery they have to track down, but whatever it is it needs to be gruesome enough that the adults involved don't like talking about it.
Maybe something to do with the main characters family members. Perhaps an accident that ended in a death or something that really set the killer on their path. What do you think?

I've managed a couple like that - though it's been a few years since - so I'm more than happy to help in any way I can!
Oh man – and maybe this is because I’m from Florida so theme parks were a tower in my childhood landscape, and corrupting nostalgia adds to the eerie factor – but I love abandoned amusement parks. I got really into abandoned theme parks and theme park mishaps during my Token Middle School Creepy Internet Videos phase. All of this is to say I’m obsessed with this idea. It makes sense that it’s all sort of hush hush, because there’s the conflation of This Terrible Thing Happened and Happy Place Yay! The same conflation that of course breeds rumors.
OOO. Yeah, possible theme park malfunction that the park covered up and managed to lawyer their way out of having it go mainstream/pay the family too much money. That’s the sort of thing that breeds vengeance.

Yesss I'm glad it's not just me who loves the idea of spooky amusement parks. And I'd really appreciate your help! Though if you'd rather just help out with everything but the mystery part that is fine to. I totally understand wanting to experience the mystery first hand instead of knowing all the lil secrets :0
Speaking of planning, I think it would probably be smart to plan out the town pretty intensely. Since most, if not all, of the RP will be placed in it. And sorry for not answering sooner, but I was planning on starting the RP with the death having happened a few days before. All the main characters who are out of town will be returning, and the Leader of the group will be attempting to gather them again.
I imagine the beginning of the RP will be a lot of determining the chemistry between characters and convincing them to look into the 'accident' that the police won't even bother with.

No worries on the timeline for responses! c: I'm pretty slow about responding, so don't let me hold you up with anything <3 Planning out the town makes sense - if not the whole town, at least significant landmarks that the main characters will have known from when they lived there and that can be easily referenced for writing a post. Places like coffee shops, schools, old hangouts, lore locations, etc. We could also let some of these details be built out by the RPers in the early stages and just add information to a lore page/section that people can reference. (For instance, if someone decided the mascot of the high school all the characters probably went to is the Lions, this could be added to the page for consistency's sake).
Ooo, kids playing investigative journalists! That's such a fun plot line.

Oooo yeah, that's a good idea! And there's no rush! My classes started this week so I won't be super fast to reply either <3
Let's see, for the lore I have already planned out we'd need: the abandoned park, locations for all family houses, a high school (cause lore probably, gotta have the classic looking for pictures 'n stuff), and enough small businesses and such so there are enough people to make it hard to track the actual killer. I definitely think planning out some NPCs would be smart. I can do that at some point haha

I'm not sure what to add right now, but if you need any help with creating maps/a layout/writing anything out just let me know c: I can also pad your list of NPC's, though that will naturally take place in the rp too probably

Ok ok, sorry for the long poof. I suck at replying consistently sometimes aklsdfjldskf I did have a question tho. Do you have any good ideas for roles we could add? I have a few on the second post, but I feel we could expand the list!
