Nico watched from a short distance away, a tiny smile on his face as the kid held the coin up to the light and ogled at it, trying to read whatever the coin said in Scadrial. He had no doubt that once they got home the mother would try to look up the coin to see where it was from, to see if she could answer her kidโs countless questions about what this other world was like. She would soon realize that there was no place called Scadrial, and that the coin was either a worthless hunk of metal or a work of art. The kid would keep the coin for a long time if they didnโt lose it first, and they would spend years going around coin collectors, trying to get it appraised, and collector after collector would be baffled. Some would suggest they melt it down and sell it for the raw metal. Maybe someone from the House would see it and know. Maybe someone would explain the House to this kid, and they would be forced to wonder if they were being fed a kidโs story to shut them up. But they would remember Kelsier, because Kelsier left that sort of lasting impression. Or maybe the kid would accidentally drop the coin, too, and the mother would have to find something else to appease them as soon as they got back to their hotel. โDonโt apologize,โ Nico murmured once Kelsier had rejoined him, a tiny smile tugging at his lips. โIt was charming, watching you with the kid. I think they liked the coin.โ He looked out over the roads, giving a small shrug. โYou have to use the crosswalks if you donโt want to get hit. Itโs organized pretty well, actually. At least in New York itโs a gridโฆ but there are a lot of people here. I would say not even half the city drives, either.โ He gave a soft shrug, pulling up the crosswalk and trying to make himself as small as possible as a small crowd gathered around him, waiting for the walk symbol to begin flashing.

Kelsier was alright with the mystery heโd ignited. He was sure if she bothered to try to figure out where it was from, she would be met with more mystery than sheโd anticipated. She might try to figure it out, or she might shrug it off...Kel couldnโt help hoping sheโd try, at least. It wasnโt a mystery until someone tried to solve it, and he liked the idea of being forever remembered as a mysterious stranger. โCrosswalks,โ he repeated, glancing at the street again. He didnโt know what he was looking for, so he just followed Nicoโs lead, glancing back at the mother and child for only a moment to see if the coin had been dropped yet. He wished he could have met Nico earlier. In a way, he had, heโd met his much younger self, but...he wished he could have watched Nico grow up. And he was far from grown up, still. But he would have given a lot to have been able to be there for him when he was younger. He still planned to let Hades know precisely how he felt about Nico being treated as he had been. If he hadnโt been there, someone should have been. He shifted instinctively as they approached the white lines on the road, shielding Nico from the majority of the other people, even if he couldnโt do a perfect job of it.

โCrosswalks,โ Nico repeated, pointing at the white lines that crossed the street. โThose things. When the light ahead of you turns white and shows a person walking, you can walk safely. Otherwise you might get hit, and it would technically be your fault for jaywalking.โ He didnโt really want to explain what jaywalking was, but he would if Kelsier didnโt get it. โYou got lucky last time that nobody was moving when you crossed.โ He gave a small sigh of relief as Kelsier got into position near him, making sure that he was close to Kelsier and not nearly as close to the strangers. It felt safer that way. He felt less exposed, less surroundedโฆ it eased the panic in his throat enough that he was able to look up at his dad and give him a nod that didnโt quite capture all the gratitude he was feeling. The light ahead of them turned white and he began walking, making sure to keep Kelsier between himself and the majority of the crowd. He, too, would have liked Kelsier in his life sooner. He had been alone for so longโฆ he had been manipulated and tossed around, and having someone like Kelsier on his side would have made all the difference. He had Rae, he had Noctin, but it wasnโt the same as having a dad. โStill want to go into Old Navy?โ he asked quietly, dipping his head towards the store they had been about to enter when Kelsier had gotten distracted by the crying child.

The small nod was all Kel really needed. It was everything heโd fought for. It was trust, when he still wasnโt sure of he deserved it, sometimes. But he wasnโt going rp argue that point again. And if this helped, heโd do it, no hesitation. He moved as Nico did, effortlessly shielding him from the worst of the crowd. This, at least, was what he knew how to do. Even in a strange world this applied. He was glad that he wasnโt so out of his element as to not be able to read Nico. โโCourse,โ he replied, in English, just because he could. his accent still hung heavily on the word, but he was almost sure it was understandable. โThere might be more children to rescue from fallen ice cream,โ he added in Scadrial, though โice creamโ was English by virtue of not existing in his world. โIโm sure I could save them while covered in blood, but somehow, I doubt their parents would see it that way. I did miss what you said about how exactly we do this, though.โ He eyed the doors. As far as he could tell, there was no good way to open them. Narrowed his eyes, reaching out with iron to see if there was any metal - there was - and considered using it before he decided against that.

Nico didnโt know when Kelsier had learned to read him that well, but he was immensely grateful for it. It meant he didnโt have to worry about anyone bumping into him or even giving him the wrong kind of look. He wasnโtโฆ well, he wasnโt afraid. He was justโฆ comfortable. โYour English is getting better,โ Nico commented softly in English, trying to keep his voice down in case someone heard him and asked what language Kelsier spoke originally. He wondered what would be a convincing lie. It had to be something nobody they ran into would speak, because that would get very awkward very quickly. โIโm sure those children will appreciate you saving them from their temper tantrums because their ice cream fell, but Iโd rather you not catch the eye of someone who might decide that youโre newsworthy because of how much blood youโve lost.โ This part was said in Scadrial. No need to alarm any onlookers or eavesdroppers. At least they were in the process of fixing the issue of Kelsierโs blood stained clothing. โHold on,โ Nico told Kelsier quietly, stepping in front of the doors so they opened. โThe doors are automatic. They can tell when someone has moved near to them, and when that happens, they open up. I donโtโฆ really know how it happens, just that it does.โ

Kelsier smiled, pleased. He knew his English was getting better, but having confirmation felt good, too. He practiced a lot - Kelsier, Survivor of Hathsin, doing something vaguely scholarly - and he was pleased as always to hear it was paying off. Not knowing any English would have been a problem. He was grateful Nico had suggested they learn. Nico, of course, had picked up Scadrial much faster than Kel picked up English. Nico was much better at languages in general. Kelsier didnโt mind, even if he did wish he could just know it and skip the learning part. โIt is a lot of blood,โ he agreed cheerfully, in Scadrial, naturally. He wasnโt going to risk anyone doing anything stupid out of misplaced concern, was he? He paused as Nico stepped forwards, then stiffened in surprise as the doors opened on their own. It was a good thing he didnโt start easily. โThe doors can tell?โ He repeated, fascinated. โIs it just people, or is it anything?โ He moved forward, stepping carefully in front of the doors, which were already open, so nothing happened. He shot Nico a glance, mischief in his gaze, then stepped into the store, fully prepared for something spectacular to happen the second he was inside. He had no idea what to expect, which made it that much more exciting.

Nicoโs brow raised and he found he was very, very grateful that the two of them spoke a language nobody else spoke. If someone overheard themโฆ well, he was fairly certain Kelsier would have landed himself in jail at least thrice over. He couldnโt wait to get Kelsier out of the bloodstained clothes. First and foremost because it was a bad reminder of what had happened when Kelsier had injured himself (and reinjured himself), but also because the last thing he wanted to do was draw someoneโs attention. The best way to show Kelsier the city was if they didnโt stick out too much. You couldnโt get anywhere if you were drawing attention, the best way to navigate was by blending in. Nico was fairly certain Kelsier had never blended in in his life. Heโd have to at least try now. Fortunately, New York City was weird enough that you could be extraordinarily extravagant and dramatic and still not draw too much attention. Blood, on the other handโฆ โHm? Oh, itโs anything that comes within a certain distance of the door. It might also be controlled by height so that it doesnโt open for rats or anything, butโฆ I dunno.โ He followed Kelsier into the store, shaking his head a little bit at the expression on Kelsierโs face. โCome on,โ he said, beckoning Kelsier towards the menโs section. โLetโs find you some better clothes for your time here.โ

To be fair, it wasnโt merely a different world that was putting Kelsier in the sort of position where he might be arrested. He said plenty of things in his owns world that could get him killed on the spot if the wrong people heard it. Actually, just being who he was was enough to get him killed on the spot. He wasnโt concerned. The only thing that was making him be at all careful was Nicoโs presence. He was aware that any chaos would affect him, too. That was the last thing he wanted. So he was going to play by the rules, for now. Seeing a very new, very different world was a good distraction. He could focus on wonders and leave the rest for later. He followed Nico into the store, craning his neck to see everything at once. โItโs colder in here,โ he noted, surprised to feel the cool air against his skin. That didnโt make much sense at all, but he supposed it was one more wonder this world had to offer. He looked at the clothes as they came close enough, moving forward to lean over the shirts. โI feel a little left out. These are the sorts of things a lot of the people who blink in wear,โ he noted, smiling a little. โSoft and colorful.โ He pointed at a hat. โTerrible for fighting in,โ he said decisively. โItโll fly right off.โ

Nico had a feeling that the consequences for breaking the law were much less strict here than they were on Scadrial. He wasnโt going to mention that to Kelsier, thoughโฆ he had a feeling the Mistborn would just get a few more crazy ideas that Nico would have to figure out how to manage. It wasnโt that he resented that (he was actually incredibly endeared and looked up to it, even though he knew he probably shouldnโt), it was just that it created a lot of mess to clean up. The punishments might not have been as severe here as they were on Scadrial, but it was a lot more difficult to get away with things here. Additionally, he didnโt want to think about the trouble Kelsierโs accent could cause if they couldnโt come up with a good excuse for where he was from. And he had no documentationโฆ it was probably for the best that they not get arrested. โI guess it makes sense that you donโt have air conditioners in Scadrial,โ Nico commented, but he was rather surprised by it. โIโm assuming you have fansโฆ I guess air conditioners do the same job a fan does, except theyโre powerful to cool off a whole building rather than just one person.โ He was grateful when Kelsier started gravitating towards the clothes. He had never really considered how different Kelsierโs normal attire was from the things that most people in his world wore every day โ that a lot of people in the House wore. โIf we buy one for you then you wonโt feel left out,โ Nico commented, brow raising. He was curious what Kelsier would choose as his outfit. And whether they would end up leaving here with far more than one outfitโฆ it seemed likely. โIf you want things that are good for fighting you might want to look in the activewear section.โ

The difference was that you probably wouldnโt be killed on sight for stepping out of line here. Of course, this meant that Kelsier was that much more likely to overreact if they were caught doing something slightly frowned upon. Instinctively, he might assume all was lost, and take to the roof, pulling Nico to his idea of safety. He figured his Allomancy was his best bet - the element of surprise and all that - but he understood that he needed to conserve his metals as best he could, here. It wasnโt as though he could get any more, probably. Maybe he could? They had metals. He could possibly make his own filings if need be. It wasnโt like he needed a ton at once. He wasnโt even thinking about his accent. He had no idea it might be a problem. He just knew that, his chaotic, uncaring reputation aside, he wasnโt an idiot. Getting arrested would probably ruin Nicoโs day. That was a good enough reason to avoid it. โThere are fans, but theyโre nothing like this. This is just...a lot of very cold air,โ he replied, looking around curiously to see where it might be coming from. โThe actual air is colder, too, not just moving. Odd.โ He turned his attention back to the clothes, eyeing them with interest. They looked...very different. There were a lot of choices. He was torn between the painfully bright shirts and the darker, easier to blend in ones. His desire to look startling versus his desire to be cool and mysterious, probably. And also he was used to needing to make surprise attacks. He was no nobleman, he didnโt know if he wanted to dress like one, even here. They needed an equivalent of a mistcloak. That was everything he wanted and needed, all in one. โHow does pricing work here?โ He asked, glancing at Nico as he pushed through the clothes. โSince weโre probably not stealing these.โ

Nico didnโt foresee too many problems in the near future. There were, of course, the usual threats โ monster attacks, people catching on an accent and being rude about it, people getting too closeโฆ but Nico wasnโt going to let any of that get in the way of his time with Kelsier. He could deal with rude people. He had dealt with plenty of them before. And he had plenty of practice killing monsters. It seemed that Kelsier did, as well. It was a relief that he could see them, at least. Nico didnโt want to think about how difficult Kelsierโs visit might have been if he hadnโt been able to see through the Mistโฆ how could he fight an enemy he couldnโt see? If anyone could do it, it was Kelsier, but it wasnโt a risk Nico wanted to be taking. โI guess air conditioning is a novel idea,โ he shrugged, glancing up at the ceiling. He couldnโt see any vents immediately visible, which was a bummer. He would have liked to show Kelsier the origin of the cold air, even if he couldnโt answer most of (if any) of Kelsierโs questions about it. โYou know,โ he mused, eyes wide, โwe never considered whether the air here would even be safe for you. I meanโฆ you breathe in ash for most of your life, there has to be something in your physiology that makes that possible, but it could easily have happened that whatever makes it possible makes it impossible for you to breathe air without ash. Maybe the ash gives you nutrients that we donโt have here, or nutrients that we only have in small levels here.โ He was letting himself get on a tangent, but it did make him realize just how woefully unprepared they had both been for the possibility of Kelsier actually managing to blink himself in. They had considered language, but little else. There were far too many ins and outs of living in a world. โRight,โ he murmured, brought right back to the fact that they were supposed to shopping. โSoโฆ everything says its price on the tag. I have a credit card, so we can pay basically whatever we need.โ

Any threats that popped up here were threats Kelsier thought he could probably handle. He had been through a lot of things, after all, he had managed to pull of a lot of impossible things in his life. Some rude people werenโt going to phase him, and monster attacks were just a challenge. Heโd been in the House long enough to know how to fight pretty much anything. โNot so much the idea of it,โ he replied thoughtfully, following Nicoโs gaze to the ceiling for a moment before he looked down again. โBut the execution is new. People havenโt really figured out how to make air move on its own, for me. Maybe they will. He liked it. If felt nice...it wouldnโt useful for hot days and stuffy nights, if the air could be relied on to move and cool itself. He had questions, naturally, but he didnโt go into them just yet. It was probably better to focus on the clothes. He paused, considering that. It was true at the air on Scadrial was very different than the air in Nicoโs world, by virtue of the ash, mostly. He had no way of knowing if it was different in any other way... it might have been. โWell, itโs a good thing Iโm still alive, then,โ he replied, smiling. โAnd not suffocating. That would have been really unfortunate. But I can breathe House air and so can you, so thereโs that.โ He looked at the clothes, plucking a gray shirt out and eyeing it, then a bright purple one. His urge to blend in was clashing with his urge to stand out. He wasnโt sure which was going to win. โPrice tagsโฆโ he repeated, searching until he found something that was probably a price tag. โExcellent. I canโt read it, though. These are numbers?โ His eye caught on another shirt, and he put the others back, heading for it.

โIโm sure they will, eventually,โ Nico replied, glancing over at Kelsier. Though they were divided to the Skaa and the nobility on Scadrial, Nico was fairly certain that humans were humans no matter what world they were on. As soon as there were no (or fewer) barriers to progress, humans would start to invent things. Maybe they wouldnโt go about it the same way. Maybe the names they chose for their inventions would be very different. But eventually, there would be inventions in place to take care of issues that were common to all humans. Eventually, Kelsierโs world would have its own version of air conditioning. Nico didnโt know how long it would take, but he believed it would happen eventually. Maybe justโฆ not within Kelsierโs lifetime, especially since he doubted they had even invented electricity yet. It was unfortunate, knowing how much progress might come were it not for the Lord Ruler. Nico had a feeling that fire burned even hotter in Kelsierโs chest. The knowledge that his world could have the sorts of things that Nicoโs world had if only the Skaa were allowed to thrive and grow. If only they were allowed to invent. Surely there were geniuses among the Skaa who had lived and died without ever knowing how much they had to offer to the world because the world in the Lord Rulerโs vision told them they were nothing. โIโm glad youโre alive, too,โ he replied, though he was distracted. He needed to stop thinking about that. Kelsier was here, and he was going to make the most of it. He wasnโt going to spend all of his time being angry about the Lord Ruler. He could be angry for as long as he wanted once Kelsier blinked himself back. โRight,โ he added, shaking his head of the thought. โYeahโฆ thatโs a nine, thereโฆ wellโฆ waitโฆ yeah, no thatโs a nine. Nine dollars and ninety-nine cents.โ Which, of course, would be meaningless to Kelsier. He didnโt know what a dollar was worth. Nico shrugged, following Kelsier to the new shirt that had caught his eye. He wasnโt sure what Kelsier was going to want to wearโฆ he had a feeling it was going to either be something akin to what Nico wore on a daily basis, or something more similar to Myrninโs eclectic wardrobe. Somehow, he had a sneaking suspicion it would be a weird amalgamation of both.

Nico was right that Kelsier couldnโt help but think of the things the Skaa couldnโt have. The things they had every right to call their own, but werenโt allowed to. How many people with gifts to give had been slaughtered? Too many. Everyone had a gift to give. Far, far too many. And there wasnโt a thing Kelsier could do that would bring them back. He could only give them vengeance. At some point, you stopped seeing people when youโd seen the things Kelsier had. At some point, the nobility were enemies, nothing more. There was a reason Kelsier didnโt feel anything at their deaths, and it wasnโt because he was a cruel man. Truthfully...he might have been a cruel man. But it wasnโt only because of that. It eas because he had seen them do things only monsters could do, so now they were monsters in his eyes. Theyโd brought this on themselves. Of course he was angry. Of course he wanted revenge. They deserved more than he could ever give them, but he could give them that. He wasnโt going to let that ruin his time here, though. It had been that way a long time, and though he thought it wouldnโt be for much longer, he also thought this was something he wanted to keep for himself. This was...this was Nicoโs world. How incredible was that? โNine. Expensive?โ Kelsier guessed, though he had absolutely no way of knowing whether it was or not. โRight, well...Iโve got this. Done worry,โ If it was expensive, heโd find a way to pay Nico back. He was sure if they robbed the bank, that would cover it. He looked through a little longer, then turned, holding up a bright, tie dyed shirt in one hand and a black leather jacket in the other, a grin on his face. โI can cover it if I fight,โ he said cheerfully. โSo I donโt stick out.โ Which was probably not his biggest concern, but old habits died hard, it seemed. He needed to keep in mind that he should be careful, sticking out too much could kill him.

โNine is actually pretty cheap,โ Nico shrugged, pinching the fabric between his fingers. โI meanโฆ it seems like itโs a pretty decent quality for being pretty inexpensiveโฆ you can find really nice shirts like this for likeโฆ two hundred, if you go for certain brands. But nine is pretty good. Not the cheapest we could find, butโฆโ he shrugged again. If he had known Scadrialโs economy at all, he might have been able to pinpoint something similar to the shirt in value. He didnโt know what metaphor to make that Kelsier would understand, though, especially since Nico himself wasnโt terribly well versed in clothes shopping. He bought one or two black shirts when he could, then spray painted the patterns he liked onto them. He bought black jeans whenever his pair had too many holes to be wearable (though he did make an attempt to patch the more inconvenient holes). He wasnโt a frequent visitor of clothing shops. โYouโre not paying for your own clothes, not here,โ Nico replied, crossing his arms. He wasnโt going to tell Kelsier who was really paying for it, but he didnโt want Kelsier doing anything reckless in order to get enough money to pay Nico back. Kelsier was an accomplished thief. Unfortunately, theft was probably easier on Scadrial than it was somewhere with security cameras on every block and police who could respond within minutes. The last thing Nico wanted was to end this visit paying Kelsierโs bail. โThatโsโฆ a combination,โ Nico said after a moment, pushing his more serious thoughts away. โI meanโฆ itโs notโฆ bad, itโs justโฆ like what the child of a hippie and a metalhead would wear.โ Not that Kelsier would know what either of those things wereโฆ โYou donโt need to worry too much about sticking out in New York,โ he added after a moment, approaching to feel the fabric of the tie dye shirt. โEveryone sticks out. Iโll have to show you some more of the city, where people like to beโฆ extravagant. And you could probably make a shirt like this with whatever colors you wanted when we get back to Camp, if I can convince Chiron to pull out the suppliesโฆโ

โTwo hundred? Dollars canโt be worth much,โ Kelsier replied, eyes focused on the clothes instead of Nico. He didnโt even know too much about Luthadel prices, to be fair...he was a thief. And he was the Survivor of Hathsin. He didnโt go shopping that often. It seemed like a really good way to get killed. He wasnโt really worried about it, though. He had more to think about than fashion. Here, though, he could wear whatever he wanted. He wasnโt wanted here, he didnโt need to cover his scars most of the time. He didnโt need to be too careful. He just needed to make the most of this visit, and spend as much time with Nico as he could. He wanted to see absolutely everything, he wanted to try all of Nicoโs favorite things, he wanted to live this life, even if it wasnโt his. This...being a father for more than his blinks. He wanted to pretend it was a life he could ever have. โYou say that as if I normally pay for my clothes,โ he replied, shaking his head a little as he looked back at Nico. โWhereโs the fun in that?โ Still said in Scadrial. He knew they were probably going to have to switch back at some point, but he liked saying incriminating things in broad daylight. Besides, Nico was better at Scadrial than Kelsier was an English. He smiled a moment later, lowering the clothes. โI am a metalhead,โ he deadpanned, eyes serious, though humor sparked in them at the same time as he waited for Nicoโs reaction. He looked back at the clothes at last, then glanced at the rest of them, thoughtful. โWell, making a shirt sounds interesting. And we should probably get more than one outfit. In case I get stabbed again,โ he mused, looking through them until he came up with a black shirt. He was about to speak, but his hand brushed against a pair of jeans and he paused. โInteresting material,โ

โI guess not?โ Nico shrugged, tilting his head a little bit. โWhat can 200 of your currency get you?โ he asked, pinching the hem of a shirt between his fingers before he let it fall. He had never given much thought to what money was worth, or if dollars were worth more or less than the rest of the worldโs currency. In truth, it didnโt really matter to him. Hadesโ credit cards worked in any country, and though he didnโt want to justโฆ live off his fatherโs money, having it sure made it simpler to get by in a pinch. He would need to get a job and make some of his own money eventually, but he couldnโt do that until he was old enough. For now, he didnโt spend very much. He had a feeling that was going to change if Kelsier found out who the credit cards belonged toโฆ โThe fun in paying for your clothes is in supporting the people who made them,โ Nico said after a moment, brows raising. He had to imagine that most of the clothes available to the Skaa were made by other Skaa who needed people to buy their wares to support them. Of course, Kelsier didnโt wear the sorts of clothes that were available to the Skaa. In truth, Nico didnโt know what kind of clothing that was, he just knew that Kelsier spent much of his time dressed up like a nobleman. When he wasnโt, he was in his mistcloak, which Nico doubted was particularly indicative of Skaa style either. โIโm not advocating stealing,โ Nico said after a moment, moving closer to Kelsier to examine the clothing he had picked out, โbut I think if you were to steal from a place like this, it would probably hurt the workers a lot less than it would if you were to steal from a small store or one where the owner makes all the clothing. In big places like this, the head of the company makes a huge profit, but the workers arenโt paid very much at all. Iโd just sayโฆ donโt steal, because even if it wonโt impact how much the workers make, some of the employees might get fired if something gets stolen when theyโre working.โ At leastโฆ that was what Nico had been told when he had been caught trying to steal the jeans he was wearing when he was much, much younger. It made him realize he really hadnโt grown that much physically, even if his outlook on life had shifted drastically. โHuh? Ohโฆ youโre not really a metalhead, though. Itโs not like you burn metals in your head, right? So youโre likeโฆ a metalbelly, which sounds a lot less cool.โ He flashed a grin, looking just a little bit smug before he turned his attention back to Kelsierโs selections. โMore than one outfit sounds good. Also jeans are useful, in my opinion.โ He kicked his leg up, filthy converse unintentionally leaving a mark on the table as he did so. He shifted his leg so Kelsier could see the giant hole ripped into the knee of his tight black jeans. โItโs sort of in fashion to buy ones that are ripped, but mine got ripped just through wear. But they sort ofโฆ mold with you a little bit. As long as youโre not trying to do the splits or anything, you can try a pair. I guess Iโm living proof you can fight in them.โ

Kelsier considered, as if he genuinely wasnโt sure what his own currency was worth. โA lot of metal,โ he decided finally. โIf youโre interested in buying it, anyway, but more than one shirt, definitely. 200 coins could probably buy a lot of food, too. I donโt shop much, though.โ He knew Nico knew about that. He hadnโt exactly been shopping much, either, though his reasons were different. He wasnโt wanted. Or a criminal. Kelsier was both. He knew Nico wanted to make his own money. He respected him for that, especially since the people he would be supporting here were probably a lot better than the ones Kel would be supporting if he were honest. In reply to Nicoโs next remark, he simply spread his arms, showing his noblemanโs shirt without showing the blood on it by virtue of long practice hiding injuries. โDefinitely not the sort of people I want to support,โ he said simply. โWhen I get clothes from other Skaa, I buy them, of course. But they donโt really make mistcloaks, for some reason.โ He paid for everything he got that the Skaa made, but he never supported noble sellers. Clothes, food, metals...they were best stolen from those who didnโt deserve them in the first place. That was more or less what Kel did for a living, only it downplayed the murder a bit. He did listen as Nico continued, his thought returning to the store. He was content with what he was going for...low key, not going to give you a headache by looking at it. It was probably habit. But it was also probably not a habit he wanted to fight. โSo it would be like stealing from Skaa merchants,โ he replied, frowning a little. โRight. No, I wouldnโt do that.โ The obvious โbutโ there was that if they went anywhere that supported the equivalent of the nobility, all bets were off. But he didnโt say that out loud, mostly because he didnโt think he needed to. Nico was well aware of who he was. โHey!โ He added, protesting as Nico grinned at him. He shook his head, mock offended. โIโm calling myself a metalhead. Itโs that or Scadrialing. Your pick.โ He actually wasnโt sure which term Nico would hate less. He was also not entirely serious about being called that, but there was no need for Nico to know that just yet. โJeans it is,โ he agreed, taking them and adding them to the pile. โThere. That should do it.โ Not that clothes shopping wasnโt extremely entertaining, but he was eager to see the rest of the place, eager to do more things Nico was interested in. This was just an errand.

It hadnโt really occurred to Nico that Kelsier might not know how much his currency could buy, but it did make perfect sense. If you were a thief, why would you ever have to pay for things? If there were people you were fine stealing from, there was likely no need to know how money worked. Kelsier could probably get a good portion of his metals and clothing from noblemen, and Nico seriously doubted that Kelsier was in charge of buying food. It wasnโt so much that Nico thought he wasnโt capable of it, it was just thatโฆ the Survivor of Hathsin had better things to do than worry about whether the vegetables his crew was eating were running low. Distantly, Nico wondered who was in charge of that part of the job. Knowing what little Nico knew about the crew, he figured it was probably Sazed. He seemed the most knowledgeable aboutโฆ well, everything. Nico would have liked to ask him questions, but the one time he had spoken to Sazed he hadnโt been particularly fluent in Scadrial, yet. โIโm surprised there are nobles who make their own clothes,โ Nico said after a moment, surprised. He didnโt really know how that worked. Logically, he figured that plenty of the nobility had jobs, but he doubted they were the kinds of jobs that actually required anything that could be considered labor at all. Jobs in overseeing, perhaps. Financial accounting. Running places as awful as Hathsin. Selling things the Skaa toiled to make to other towns for five times what was given to whichever of the Skaa made it. Nico knew he likely wasnโt being fair to Kelsierโs planet, but he found he didnโt want to be fair. So much of what he heard about it was awful. It wasnโt as simple as Nico was making it out to be, and he knew it. The issue was, he didnโt really want to explain capitalism to Kelsier, for fear it might derail his visit entirely. It was a noble pursuit, of course, but even Kelsier couldnโt dismantle capitalism all by himself. It just meant it was a little bit difficult to explain that purchasing from large stores gave money to people who didnโt deserve it, but that stealing from those same stores would land people into a state of financial uncertainty if they lost their jobs over it. โYou canโt call yourself a metalhead,โ Nico pointed out after a moment, more than a little bit grateful for the distraction. โItโs not true. Metalhead actually means something here, andโฆ wellโฆ I wouldnโt be surprised if you actually were a metalhead, but it doesnโt mean Allomancy. Besides, why would you want to name yourself something inaccurate? Although, admittedly, Metalbelly doesnโt sound too great.โ Nico shook the thought away, instead ushering Kelsier towards the fitting room. โTry,โ he said, crossing his arms as he pushed the door closed. โYou have to make sure it all fits.โ

Kelsier wasnโt in charge of the food. Or the preparation of the food, or any sort of mundane thing like that. He was too busy bringing down an empire to worry about whether the soup was properly done. That was one reason. He also had no experience in cooking and might have killed his entire crew on accident if heโd been left alone with the wrong ingredients. It was something of a silent agreement not to try and make Kelsier cook. And Sazed seemed to enjoy it well enough. He did a good job of keeping everyone fed, anyway. He had something of a gift in making every job seem like an honor, no matter how mundane if might have been โThere are merchant shops for some expensive clothes,โ he explained distractedly, still taking in the general look of the place. It was...very different from what heโd expected. Not that heโd really had any expectations, but still. โWith materials that itโs hard for Skaa to get their hands on. Silk, velvet, dyesโฆthey have Skaa working for them, still. Doing the sewing and whatever else you do to make a dress.โ From his perspective, Nico was being perfectly fair. Scadrial was a truly terrible place. Kelsier was still going to fight to make it better, though. He didnโt really understand how the shop worked. Was it the sort that was beneficial to steal form, or would it hurt the wrong people? Technically, he knew that destroying Keeps also hurt Skaa, in a way, but he considered it worth it, to free them whether they asked for it or not. He knew he was trouble. He was trying hard to be as much trouble as he could be. But it was a very different world here, and he was trying to remind himself that he didnโt know how it worked. There didnโt seem to be as many clear divides. He couldnโt have said who deserved to die, and who didnโt. It was...a little disconcerting. โMetal internal organs,โ he replied, instead of allowing Nico to be logical. โBut fine. As you wish.โ He headed for the room Nico was bringing him towards, glancing at the boy to see what he was trying to accomplish. He didnโt often try things on. He tended to know what fit him just from experience. He obediently stepped on and closed the door. It took him about five minutes to try everything on. When he emerged, he was back in his original bloodstained clothes, but he looked satisfied. โIt fits,โ he assured Nico. โI thought it would.โ

โDyes are pretty widespread here,โ Nico shrugged, tugging at something that was offensively bright colored. โI meanโฆ this is meant to be reflective at night, so that you donโt get hit by a car or a bike or something. Thatโs more of a concern in other cities than it is here, I guess, cause other cities donโt have lights as bright as New York does. They might have streetlamps and stuff, but they donโt have big billboards.โ He shrugged, then followed Kelsier a few paces. โThatโs not really the main thing I was trying to say, though. I was going to say that fabrics like velvet and silk are a lot more expensive here, too. They cost more to make, so you have to be pretty well off to have garments made from it. And I donโt really see why people would want them, honestly. Theyโre so much harder to wash.โ โI never really thought about how similar our worlds are, before,โ Nico murmured, staring at the fitting room door as he waited for Kelsier to try on the clothes. He hoped it was okay that he was talking to him when he was trying things on. If Kelsier had an issue with it, Nico was confident he would say something. It wasnโt as though Kelsier was shy about things like that. โI meanโฆ most of the Skaa donโt get to see the stars because of the mists, and most of us here donโt get to see the stars because of the light pollution. Some of the more well-off people can afford to go places on the weekends where they have second or third houses, and they can see the stars, butโฆ most people who live here donโt see much beyond the haze of all of the electricity. I know itโs not the same, because I guess electricity benefits everyone, and there are places you can go where everyone sees the stars, butโฆ I guess itโs not really something I considered. That New York is just as starless as Luthadel.โ Distantly, Nico wondered if Kelsier would be able to see the stars beyond the light pollution if he used tin. He had a feeling it wouldnโt work that way โ Kelsier might just blind himself trying, given how bright some of the streetlights were. โWeโll be able to see the stars when we go back to Camp,โ he added after a moment, scuffing his shoe along the floor. As Kelsier emerged, he looked up, prepared to see whatever it was that Kelsier had tried on. Ah. It seemed like it was going to be a surprise, then. โIโm glad it does,โ Nico said after a moment, giving a small smile. โDo you want to look for anything else or are we ready to check out?โ

Everything Nico said only inspired more questions for Kelsier. What was a bike? How did you make reflective clothes? As far as he knew, mirrors were the sort of thing that happened either naturally or because someone somewhere figured out how to make glass and happened to discover reflections as a result. He couldnโt quite see how you could wear glass, thoughโฆit was a little tooโฆsolid. Not flexible enough. Then again, people wore armor. Maybe that was what Nico meant. He hadnโt seen anyone wearing armor around here, but you didnโt typically see that on Luthadel streets eitherโฆ The point was that Kelsier had a sudden new appreciation for younger Nicoโs (and older Nico, when he was feeling comfortable enough) endless supply of questions. This world seemed to inspire them. The clothes heโd picked out were going to work. Heโd have liked to just walk out with them, but he wondered if anyone would see who had left the bloodstained clothes behindโฆheโd rather not get Nico in trouble. People seemed more likely to care about that sort of thing here than in Luthadel, where bloodstained clothing was just what the Skaa wore. Not the nobility of course. They couldnโt have their reputations questioned like that. โAnd yet, people seem to want to be here,โ he noted as he emerged, shaking his head a little. โIf the streets are any indication, anyway. Do they have to be here? Or do they really all flock to a place where the stars are hidden?โ He couldnโt imagine doing such a thing on purpose. He was lucky to be Mistborn, he could see the stars if he chose, but the vast majority of people on Scadrial had nowhere they could go if they wanted to look at them. He glanced around. He had no doubt that there were other wonders hidden away in this place, things these people took for granted, not realizing just how incredible it all was. But all things consideredโฆthis wasnโt the most thrilling stop they planned to make. This was more of a necessary one so they could go to the others without drawing unwanted attention. โIโm ready to go,โ he confirmed, glancing around the place one more time. โWhere to after this?โ

Nico was aware that his world was very different from Scadrial, but he had never really stopped to really consider how different. There was so much background knowledge an individual would need to have to even begin to understand this world. Nico had done his best to prepare Kelsier, but it was inevitable that he had missed things. There were going to be hundreds of things that Kelsier didnโt know. Things that Nico had just come to think of as normal and hadnโt even thought to mention. He tried not to feel guilty about that, though he knew he had put Kelsier incredibly far out of his depth. Fortunately, at least, he seemed to be doing well enough. He wasnโt floundering like Nico had feared he might. โPeople can see the stars a lot better in other places, but it tends to be that where there are more stars, there are fewer people. And there are a lot of people who donโt want to be alone. People who go to big cities to pursue their dreams, because there are so many more jobs and opportunities where there are more people. Not to mention that New York is a pretty big tourist destination. There are people who come from all over the world just to visit New York and walk around Times Square. Itโs sort of a big deal,โ Nico replied, uncertain how else to describe it. โI meanโฆ itโs pretty impressive, and a lot of people think it represents America pretty well. Big and loud, full of people and dreams and opportunityโฆ they may not be entirely right about what America is, but this is what our country is technically supposed to be. I donโt know. Itโs a little romantic, I suppose. Other people come just because they like fashion, and thereโs lots of trendy stuff here. Itโs also in a ton of movies and books and things, and a lot of people think that you canโt visit the country without visiting New York. Iโd say most of the people here right now arenโt people who actually live here. Chances are that they can see the stars much better from where they actually live, but theyโre just here visiting. They donโt much mind that there arenโt any stars here, especially since they wonโt be here for more than a week or two.โ Nico took another quick look around, then began to move towards the cash registers. โAfter thisโฆ I donโt know. Maybe the Empire State Building? As long as you promise not to cause too much troubleโฆ?โ

Floundering was relative. Kelsier wasnโt completely lost, but he thought he would have been if heโd done something stupid like come here with no plan, and ended up halfway across the world from Nico, without any means of contacting him. And hadnโt he mentioned giant bodies of water? That would have been fun to blink into. He had been called impulsive plenty of times before. He knew it was true. He was just glad he had ended up where heโd intended to go. Notโฆin the sky. Or underground. The point was that he was indeed floundering a bit, but he was good at looking like he knew what he was doing when he didnโt. And if he had any questions, he could pester Nico with them. โSo this isnโt actually a home, so much as a place people visit,โ he mused, glancing around as Nico approached theโฆplace Kelsier assumed was where you bought things. It looked mildly like something he had seen in shops. But he didnโt tend to go in those places, and when he did, it wasnโt to buy things, so he was just going to assume. โIt must be strange for the people who really live here,โ he added thoughtfully. โTo have their home seen as a tourist stop. The noise alone must get tiresome. And you said weโd be yelled at if we started stopping in the middle of the sidewalk to look at things, so that probably happens a lot. I donโt know. I donโt think this is where Iโd pick to live, if I were in your world. Itโs too bad Iโm not a demigod, or maybe Iโd just hang out at camp.โ He managed the word โdemigodโ fairly well. There wasnโt any word for it in Scadrial, of course, but it was far from the first time heโd tried to say it. โEmpire State Building,โ he repeated, raising an eyebrow at Nico. โPlease. What trouble could I possibly cause?โ

Nico liked New York. He had to admit that it was large and loud and crowded, and those were three things that he didnโt tend to like, butโฆ he had spent so much time in the city that it just sort of felt like home. As close to home as he was going to get, anyway. There may not have been many stars and there may have been too many people, but it wasnโt as though Nico really needed the quiet of night. Living in the city that never slept worked perfectly well for him, seeing as he never really slept either. He spent more time at Camp than he did in the middle of the city, of course, butโฆ he liked the city. One day, when he was old enough to understand how leases worked, he had a feeling that he would have an apartment there. It would be nice, he thought, to have his own space. Preferably on a high floor so he could look down at the rest of the city and watch everyone going about their business. โItโs home to a lot of people,โ Nico replied as he placed the clothing tags at the register. The shop clerk gave him a strange look before she began scanning them, but she seemed decently content that they hadnโt stolen anything, at least. That was all Nico was hoping for, and they could pay for it just fineโฆ there wasnโt an issue, as far as he could see. โItโs the people who live here who do the yelling. They pretend that they donโt like tourists, and I guessโฆ it makes sense, โcause theyโre inconvenient sometimes, but I donโt think anyone here ever actually wants the tourists to leave. The worst seasons are late August and right at the beginning of the year โ actually, a lot of people who live here actually go out of town around those times so they can avoid tourism season. I like it here, though. Maybe notโฆ here here, but the city. I canโt imagine anything else like it.โ He cast a look at Kelsier as he slid his credit card into the machine, arms crossing as he waited for it to beep. โIf I remember correctly, someone wanted to fistfight Zeus.โ

Oddly enough, New York might have suited Kelsier more than he currently thought. He never slept, either. He didnโt mind crowds and noise, and he was more than willing to see the unpredictable, though it had never applied to to clothes quite as much as it did now. It was so different from Luthadel in so many more ways than just the obvious ones, and he found he didnโt know how to react. He didnโt know enough to know if he liked it. But he knew enough to know that he probably would never feel at home in it. It was strange to consider that he might need more quiet than Nico did, butโฆhe was used to silence at night, and even for much of the day. Not always, of course. Noblemen were not exactly silent when they died. Butโฆhe wasnโt sure heโd know what to do with a city that never slept. Would the company help? Or would he prefer to have those nights to himself? He watched as the person behind the counter began to wave something at the clothes, fascinated by the process. He had no idea what she was doing or how it helped Nico buy the clothes. The thing she was holding was beeping, which was just weird. โOdd, that everyone vacations somewhere else, even when they live where people normally go to vacation,โ he noted, shaking his head a little. โIt makes sense, but itโs still odd.โ He watched the thin strip of material Nico put in the black thing with bumps, and waited curiously for it to do something interesting, though he had no idea what. Then he looked at Nico, raising an eyebrow. โOf course not. I would never do such a thing,โ he said airily, smiling. โNow, a knife fightโฆโ

Nico wasnโt sure whether he thought Kelsier would hate New York or thrive in it. There were far more people than Kelsier were probably used to, and he was used to having nights to himself, butโฆ it was the sort of city that was full of the people Kelsier wanted to help. It was a city of progress. It was a city full of people who had the same dreams as Kelsier, albeit on a smaller scale. The problems in Nicoโs world couldnโt be solved by killing noblemen. Okayโฆ there were a few billionaires that could probably be offed without issue, and their deaths would make the world indescribably better, but he wasnโt going to mention that to Kelsier. He might take it a little bit too seriously. Besidesโฆ killing them wasnโt going to solve the problem. All of them had wills, and all of their money was going somewhere. It definitely wasnโt to the people or causes that actually needed it. Nico shook the thought away. Kelsier wasnโt here to kill billionaires. He was here so Nico could show him around. So he could see his world for the first time. โI guess,โ Nico shrugged, brow furrowing a little bit. โI meanโฆ I guess itโs only weird because nobody in Luthadel ever goes on vacation, do they? It seems like the only people that ever travel anywhere are merchants, and they travel from city to city to do their jobs, not to relax and get time off. And something tells me they really donโt do it for the cultural experience.โ He shifted, walking out of the store and pocketing the receipt. โYou arenโt challenging Zeus to a knife fight. Sorry, but one of us values your life.โ

Most problems, Kelsier had found, could be pinned back to someone. Not all, but there were always going to be people the world would be much better off without, and he really didnโt make any problem with killing those sorts of people. There were noblemen in his world. He hadnโt figured out the equivalent in Nicoโs, but he was pretty sure they existed. The system wasnโt the same, but there were still issues, and there were probably still people making those issues much worse without caring who it hurt. He wasnโt here to save this world. But it was a hard habit to break, and not one he really wanted broken, anyway. He was close, in his own world. He had a plan, and it was going to succeed, because if he had one more plan that failedโฆ โThey arenโt the only ones, but they are the main ones,โ Kelsier replied, shaking his head a little. โTravel isnโt really much of an option to many people. There are plenty of people who have never stepped outside Luthadel and probably never will. It must be nice to have the option to go somewhere else open to so many people.โ He moved, following Nico out. Somehowโฆthat had gone well. He hadnโt gotten them into trouble. He was almost disappointed. Almost. โDo you think Zeus even knows how to use a knife?โ He asked curiously. โOr does he just rely on his powers? Does he have any weapons?โ

Nico wasnโt sure he wanted to aim Kelsier in the direction of the people who made the world a worse-off place than it could be. He had an idea of what Kelsier would do, and while it was respectableโฆ they werenโt as in need of a revolution as Scadrial was. Besides, Nico believed that for change to be permanent, it had to come from the people it affected most. Kelsier couldnโt change things and then disappear back into his world. If he did, everything would just go back to the way it had been. Change had to come from the inside, from people who were determined and dedicated to keeping things on the right track. Kelsier had his hands full enough doing that for his world. Nicoโฆ well, he knew there were billions of people who didnโt even know Earth had been in danger over the past few years. They didnโt know that the world had been saved by a small handful of teenagers. โI guess it is nice to be able to go places,โ Nico replied quietly, looking up at Kelsier. โAndโฆ I guess you donโt really have much of an immigration problem in Luthadel. But America is build on the idea of welcoming immigrants and refugees. We havenโt done a very good job of that in the recent past, but it is still important. At leastโฆ I think so.โ He gave a small shrug, then decided to let the topic drop. Convincing Kelsier not to knife fight the king of the gods was a little bit more important. โI swear, Dad, if you take Zeusโ powers away I will personally beat the shit out of you. And Iโm not giving you any information that might be seen as a tactical advantage.โ

There were advantages to being a lot more comfortable with killing than a lot of others were. Here, anyway. And in the House too, though he thought the number of people in the House who could be persuaded to kill someone was probably fairly high. Then again, maybe that was true of the people here, too. He didnโt know. But he doubted the people here or the people in the House tended to be used to it. Unbothered by it. Kelsier didnโt grieve the noblemen he killed. They had eared their fate. The point was, if Nico pointed at someone here and said they should die, then Kelsier was at risk of taking that very literally. Luckily, Nico probably knew that by now. โThe population of Luthadel doesnโt really change much, no,โ he admitted thoughtfully. โBesides children replacing adults eventually as time passes, of course. But we donโt get many people from other places. A few travelers, merchants mostly. It certainly isnโt a problem.โ He shrugged. It was interesting, and he was curious to hear more, but it didnโt sound like a subject Nico could easily be prompted to ramble about, so he didnโt press. โNever said Iโd take his powers,โ he replied lightly, giving Nico his best mischievous grin. โPlease. Can he hear us right now, by the way? As a god, one would think he could, but maybe heโs not all that impressive of a god after allโฆthink he speaks Scadrial?โ
