Chapter 3: Rootspring
Rootspring is following SkyClan as they head to the gathering island. The other Clans are already there and he thinks to himself that the other four Clans have already buried their dead on their own territory. Violetshine nudges Tree and says that Plumwillow has hardly slept since Sandynose died. Plumwillow has her head low, and she's following Hawkwing, Reedclaw, and Dewspring, their heads also low. Tree says he'll miss Sandynose, which surprises Rootspring as he's never heard him talk so fondly like that about another SkyClan cat. Violetshine remarks that the Clan seems strange without Sandynose and she can't believe he died. Tree murmurs that he can't believe that any cat died, and why warriors would fight for the impostor. Violetshine reminds him that they believed he spoke for StarClan. Rootspring gets angry and asks why StarClan would pit them against other warriors. Palesky mews from behind that the vigil is for forgiveness. Sagenose grunts that it'll take more than a vigil to forget that Sandynose was killed by warriors for the sake of a traitor. Violetshine says that while they won't forget, they can forgive. Rootspring thinks that while his mother has a point, the impostor is directly responsible and he wanted revenge for something that happened moons ago. Anger sparks in him and wonders if Ashfur really wanted to destroy the Clans because Squirrelflight rejected him, and wonders if any cat could truly be that selfish. If every cat tried to kill their Clanmates after they had been dumped, there would be no Clans left.
Rootspring catches Bristlefrost's eye and she blinks at him warmly. He blinks a greeting in return and thinks that now the impostor has been deposed of, he wouldn't see her as much. He notes that there weren't any form of divisions in ShadowClan, as SkyClan and ShadowClan had allied to stop the impostor. WindClan had united behind the impostor, but only Crowfeather and Breezepelt were part of the rebels. Dovewing is talking to Heathertail, while Cloverfoot and Crowfeather exchange news. But, Rootspring notices that hardly any RiverClan cats came. Mothwing, Icewing, and Harelight are there, but they aren't RiverClan anymore. Rootspring goes to them (after a short recap of how all three were exiled) and realizes that only Reedwhisker, Willowshine, Lizardtail and Gorseclaw had come. Mistystar isn't present. Harelight greets Rootspring and asks how he is. Rootspring replies that he's fine, and asks where Mistystar is. Harelight says he hasn't seen her, and Icewing sniffs that she doesn't want to be a part of a vigil that honors rebels. Rootspring reminds them that Reedwhisker came, and Harelight grunts that she had to send somebody who wouldn't offend the rest, and to have somebody honor Softpelt. Rootspring wonders if Mistystar's absence is causing friction they can't afford. Icewing growls that they don't care who she sends, as they're ShadowClan cats now, and her mew is bitter. Mothwing assures Icewing that they'll always be ShadowClan cats at heart. The RiverClan cats who have come seem eager to see them. Mothwing and Harelight start going towards them, but Icewing stays behind. Mothwing asks if she's coming, and Icewing replies that it's okay for Mothwing to go, because Mistystar invited her back. Harelight brings up that Mistystar might forgive them and let them back in. Rootspring says that Mistystar let Softpelt's kin come to the vigil. Icewing retorts that Softpelt fought for the impostor, not against him, and asks if she would have done the same if only Dappletuft died. Harelight mournfully says that he would have been there for them both all the same, and Rootspring feels pity because Softpelt and Dappletuft were Harelight's littermates. He says that surely Mistystar must realize they were trying to defend the Clans in their own way, but Squirrelflight starts the gathering and their conversation ends.
Squirrelflight begins by saying that they have come here tonight to honor their dead clanmates who think they were doing what was right. Harestar joins her and says that every warrior who fought that day believed they were fighting for StarClan. Tigerstar adds that every cat who died, died for their Clan. Leafstar adds in that they ask no more of their warriors than that, and they have come to honor those who have given their lives to defend the way of life they believe in. Rootspring sees Snowbird trembling against Scorchfur and knows that their kits Conefoot and Frondwhisker died. Squirrelflight says that this is a time for remembering forgiveness. Rootspring's attention fades away and starts searching for ghosts. He wants to believe that they're safe in StarClan, but doubts it. He recalls what Harestar had told them after he had died. Rootspring thinks that while the leaders here are preaching forgiveness, if StarClan was fading, then there's nowhere for dead cats to go and the impostor might have done more damage than could be fixed. He might have severed their connection forever, and warriors without StarClan are no better than rogues. He tries to search for ghosts, but he's drawn back into focus but hearing the wails of Snowbird, Spotfur, and Blossomfall. He thinks to himself that without StarClan, the grief might just be the beginning.
As the gathering ends, the leaders talk underneath the great oak and Rootspring wonders if they're discussing what to do with the impostor. Tree tells Violetshine that she'll feel better when they're home. Rootspring catches Bristlefrost and they start chatting. Bristlefrost feels pity for Spotfur because they were mates, but also because she got over her own crush of Stemleaf and believed when she was younger than she and Stemleaf would be together forever, but seeing how upset Spotfur is, she thinks that what she was feeling wasn't love at all. Rootspring says that it might be because she's all grown up and gotten over it, to which Bristlefrost asks if he ever got over his own. Rootspring replies "of course not" and Bristlefrost goes on to say that it's weird in ThunderClan right now, as everyone is trying to get along, but some are finding it hard to forget that some of them left the clan, while others stayed and sided with the impostor. Rootspring remarks that SkyClan had never felt more united, and he's sure Squirrelflight can fix the issues. Bristlefrost doesn't look convinced, but says she hopes so too, and worries that the Clan won't support her as she doesn't have her leader name and nine lives. She goes on to worry about never getting Bramblestar back. The leaders break up and the gathering ends, and the two bid farewell. Rootspring sees his parents again and thinks that there's so much he wants to tell Tree. They trail behind the SkyClan cats as they head back home, and Rootspring says that he didn't see any ghosts. Tree grunts that he guesses they didn't want to attend their own vigil. Rootspring thanks his dad for sticking up for him. Tree is confused, and Rootspring explains how Tree lied about being able to see Bramblestar's spirit. Tree shrugs and says he wanted to make it easy for him. Rootspring says he didn't have to, and he appreciates it. Tree says that it's what any father would do for his son, and Rootspring will understand when he has kits of his own one day. As they continue walking, they spot a shape shimmering near the border of ThunderClan territory. Rootspring thinks it's Bramblestar, but the spirit turns out to be a she-cat. Rootspring guesses that she's a kittypet. Tree can see this ghost too, and greets her. The kittypet is confused, realizing that both of them can see her when normally the living cannot. Rootspring thinks "We're different", but keeps his mouth shut and explains that he and Tree "just can".
The kittypet is named Cheddar. She suddenly laps her shoulder and Rootspring wonders if there's such a thing as ghost fleas. He then wonders if she can see the other dead warriors, and she confirms, having seen them around the lake, but says they fade in, then fade out, as if they can't decide whether to be ghosts or not. Rootspring wonders if it's them disappearing altogether. Rootspring asks what they looked like. Cheddar says that some were gray, some tabby, and there was a brown tom with ginger legs. Tree and Rootspring realize that she's talking about Sandynose. Cheddar asks if they know what's happening to them, and Tree speculates that they're trying to join their Clanmates in StarClan. Cheddar remarks that StarClan must be a "creepy place", since the ghosts looked scared. She begins to worry that she too will fade, as dying was bad enough. Tree promises her that she won't fade, but Rootspring wonders how his father can be so sure. Cheddar asks how he knows, and Tree replies that she's not a warrior. Rootspring is horrified with the concept of the ghosts fading into nothing without StarClan. Cheddar begins to leave, and Rootspring asks her to tell the ghosts that they're trying to help them. Rootspring asks himself what the point was to having a weird power like seeing ghost cats if he can't help them when they're in danger.

Okay, now I'm sad. :c Poor Plumwillow. She, Dewspring, Reedclaw and Hawkwing all miss Sandynose so much. Finleap probably does as well, though it's not shown since he's TC now. It is surprising that Tree also misses him since they were never friends, but Violetshine is right. It doesn't feel right that Sandynose is no longer a part of SkC.
Gah, Mistystar! Seriously?! *Sigh* I can't believe only four cats came. At least Lizardtail and Gorseclaw are there. Actually, isn't that the first time Lizard was called Softpelt's kin in an actual book? Also, Reedwhisker and Willowshine are here. The only four RC cats, if we're not counting Icewing, Harelight and Mothwing. In fact, Icewing is shown to be awfully bitter. Not that I blame her.

*More sadness* Snowbird, Spotfur and Blossomfall are now all wailing in grief. This is getting more and more tragic.
I'll admit, though, I laughed at Cheddar's name.

I LOVE what I read from the first spoiler you posted. Thanks for taking the time to actually write awesome and well informed essays about it. I can't wait to read this book. They actually remembered the families! I hope they mention Strikestone and Smokehaze, who was a rebel, or at least, she went to a meeting, but I'm not surprised the books forgot, or maybe that was just a meeting to check it out, and she didn't officially join, idk. Either way, I'm really excited to read this book.

Chapter 4: Bristlefrost
Bristlefrost is out hunting, though she isn't having much luck. As she's out in the forest, she hears cats yowling, and she recognizes the voices of Lionblaze and Thornclaw. Turns out, Bristlefrost was only taking a nap here and their arguing has woken her up. It's Lionblaze's and Thornclaw's confrontation from Graystripe's Vow. Just about word-for-word too. Ivypool rounds them with dismay while Sorrelstripe and Dewnose look worried. Bristlefrost doesn't see Squirrelflight. The two continue their argument until Twigbranch breaks in and asks Thornclaw if he wanted to be acting deputy. Thornclaw denies, but ThunderClan isn't convinced. Bristlefrost recalls that Thornclaw has been ordering things around since she was a kit, and he was an experienced warrior despite his age. Bumblestripe weaves between the two and says they have larger issues at hand than the deputyship. They continue arguing and Bristlefrost realizes that Thornclaw is accusing Squirrelflight of playing favourites instead of putting her Clan first. Thornclaw brings up that Lionblaze is only deputy because Squirrelflight is his kin, and their argument continues (again, this is basically word-for-word from GV). When Thornclaw drops the names of Sparkpelt and Flamepaw, the latter shrinks in shame beside Finchpaw. ThunderClan is watching this whole thing. Bristlefrost sees Snaptooth, Flywhisker, and Flipclaw nodding in agreement, and she's astounded that her own brother would possibly agree to Thornclaw's accusations. Bristlefrost thinks that the leaders and deputies have been the strongest cats in the Clan, and while it wasn't a coincidence that they were related, it was moreso that each generation passed on it's skills to the next. Flipclaw speaks up and asks why they should be following StarClan if they're not even present. Bristlefrost doesn't understand why her brother seemingly wants to reject everything he's been taught. Squirrelflight tells Flipclaw that their beliefs have always server them well, and Dewnose and Lionblaze agree with her. Bumblestripe says that it's the only way StarClan may return, an Lilyheart backs up Bumblestripe. When Flipclaw drops that perhaps they should stop living as Clans, Bristlefrost begins to get upset at the thought of Flipclaw just leaving her and their family.
Ivypool begins to tremble and says Flipclaw just can't abandon his Clan. Like in GV, Thornclaw, Snaptooth, Flywhisker, Flipclaw, and soon thereafter, Graystripe announce they are going for a "wander". When Graystripe says he's leaving Squirrelflight is taken back and Bristlefrost sees her eyes hollow with grief, reminding him that he promised to support her. Graystripe says that he can't keep that promise. They leave, and Squirrelflight looks quite upset and Bristlefrost worries if she'll ever see Flipclaw again. Bristlefrost asks Squirrelflight if they'll be back, and Squirrelflight replies "that's up to them. Bristlefrost asks if warriors leaving their clan like this happens sometimes, and Squirrelflight snaps at her that she can't reassure her, reminding Bristlefrost that she's a warrior, not a kit. She says more gingerly, having realized her harsh tone, that she's sure everything will be okay. Squirrelflight's eyes are dark with worry and Bristlefrost realizes that she doesn't know. As Bristlefrost backs away, she bumps into Spotfur, and she sees that she's taking the situation worse than she was. Bristlefrost asks if she's all right, and Spotfur grunts that she is. Bristlefrost suddenly feels a need to protect her Clan. She's sure she could never turn her back on the Clan who fed and raised her, and promises that she's going to stay in ThunderClan and to do whatever she can to make her Clan feel whole again.

Thank you for giving such great summaries, it makes the spoiler threads super enjoyable! I see Mistystar’s still being unreasonable, wonder if she’ll continue to be like that throughout the book or eventually get better or die, that’s a good option too. Nice that we get to see Bristle’s reaction to Flipclaw leaving, yay for acknowledging family relations!

Being honest, I haven't read GV yet. But I have already read this scene as it was in the preview we had gotten. I didn't realize it happened this early in the book, though. I do wonder if Thornclaw, Flywhisker and Snaptooth will return. GV only confirmed Graystripe and Flipclaw returning.

i am not excited for this book so far. i dont get how people like bristle. she's not even a character. she feels more like a camera into tc true. her chapter rehashed GV. even if people didnt read GV and read her chapter, it'd still be pointless to point out. and it was all about squirrel's reactions, not bristle's. bristle only serves to be a camera for squirrelflight. it's so unfair and lame.

Man, even without reading the chapters, there's such a weird difference between Rootspring and Bristelfrost's chapters. He clearly seems to actually think and feel things, while Bristlefrost is just.....there. Watching everything. The most we got there was "Oh no, my brother doesn't conform exactly to clan traditions! How unfortunate."
I love the summary for Rootspring's though. Seeing acknowledged family relationships and focus on RiverClan cats is nice. Can you imagine if they were setting Harelight up for leadership and we got two Harestars, lmao.

Chapter 5: Shadowsight
Shadowsight and Mothwing are working in the medicine den, and although Shadowsight appreciates Mothwing, she's usually insisting on her methods of doing things. He knows Mothwing is having difficulty adjusting, and so is Icewing and Harelight. Scorchfur comes into the den and explains he cut his paw. Shadowsight is about to help him but Mothwing intervenes and does it "her way" and talks over Shadowsight when he explains the way he does things. The two begin to argue until Cloverfoot comes in and tells them to knock it off as she can hear it from the other side of the camp. She adds that Tigerstar wants to see both of them. When they go into Tigerstar's den, Puddleshine and Tigerstar are already there. Mothwing goes "I suppose you know why I'm here", and it's revealed that Mothwing is worried about how competent a Medicine cat Shadowsight is. Shadowsight begins to argue but Tigerstar says that while he has faith in his son, he also values Mothwing's experience. Mothwing says she thinks Shadowsight received his name too early, and the only reason he got his name was because he "saved" Bramblestar, but obviously he didn't. Shadowsight objects that he was no older than Puddleshine when his mentor got his full name, but Mothwing says the circumstances were different, and she reveals that some in the Clan wait for him to leave so either Puddleshine or herself can treat them. Shadowsight is baffled and said that he thought his treatment of Bramblestar was from StarClan, but Mothwing interjects that was from Ashfur, and he only ended up causing issues for them. Shadowsight begins to feel awful again about killing Bramblestar. Tigerstar sees this and says that no cat is blaming him, and Mothwing says he was just inexperienced which is why Ashfur appealed to him. Mothwing wants to demote Shadowsight to an apprentice again. Shadowsight looks for support but Tigerstar, Puddleshine, and Mothwing are all in agreement. He meekly asks if he will be renamed to Shadowpaw again, but Tigerstar and Puddleshine deny. Shadowsight asks what he's even supposed to do then, and Tigerstar says that Puddleshine had an idea.
Puddleshine decided that Shadowsight was to heal Ashfur's wounds. Shadowsight is unhappy about this, and wonders if they think he'll be so careless that he'll "accidentally" kill Ashfur, and becomes bitter that he's supposed to heal the cat who ruined his life and tried to kill him. In his prison, Ashfur's made no attempt to take care of himself. His wounds from Reedwhisker and Hawkwing are ruffled and bloody. Ashfur asks if he's still a medicine cat then, and Shadowsight gets annoyed with him, asking why wouldn't he be. Ashfur says that he thought his clanmates might think twice about trusting him after Shadowsight passed on his messages so effectively. Shadowsight growls that he didn't know they were Ashfur's messages. Ashfur asks why Puddleshine didn't come to treat him, and Shadowsight replies that he's busy, eying Sagenose and Mintfur (they're guarding Ashfur at this time). Ashfur sees this and asks if he's scared that they'll think they're friends. Shadowsight hisses that they will never be friends, and Ashfur's eyes sparkle knowingly, reminding him that he's helped him so much. Ashfur tells Shadowsight that they're quite alike, which infuriates Shadowsight and he screams at him that they are not. Ashfur tips his head and says that neither of them "really belongs". Shadowsight glares at him and says he belongs.
Ashfur is unconvinced, and asks if cats who speak to the dead truly belong. Shadowsight notes that although Ashfur has Bramblestar's body, he has the slinking figure of a rogue. Shadowsight asks why. Ashfur is puzzled, and asks him to elaborate. Shadowsight demands to know why Ashfur chose him specifically to kill Bramblestar. Ashfur actually seems to take his own answer into consideration, but answers with: "You were young and impressionable. And you could already share with StarClan. It helped that you were Tigerstar's son. Anyone who questioned you would have had to answer to him. And Tigerstar is so stubborn and loyal, he'd defend you no matter how crazy your visions sounded." Shadowsight says that Ashfur has ruined his life. Ashfur says that Shadowsight should stop feeling sorry for himself, reminding him that he's still technically a Medicine cat, and a natural one at that. Shadowsight is intrigued, and Ashfur explains that Shadowsight was perceptive enough to hear his messages, and he may have been smarter than he thought in choosing Shadowsight. Shadowsight is curious as to why Ashfur of all cats seems to have faith in him. He knows Ashfur is a liar, but perhaps his time in StarClan taught him something the living didn't know. Ashfur lowers his voice, and says "I'm beginning to see that there may be something about you after all. Something very special indeed."

I'm curious. It seems like Bristle now has a restored resolve and wants to put her clan first and protect them. To make them whole again. I'm excited to see where they'll take her character from here, maybe she'll get a higher ranking position after all? Also the moments between Root and Tree was very cute.
