Kayleigh noticed the look he'd sent in the direction of the group of jocks and she wondered if they ever gave him trouble as well. She knew they weren't a part of the group of bullies who constantly bothered him, but his demeanor made her think he didn't want to interact with the approaching group of teens. "Oh, great, let's go somewhere else." She said, ignoring his second comment as she pointedly turned away from the cafeteria doors. He obviously wouldn't be getting any peace with her around. "Where do you want to go? My friend Emma hangs out with her boyfriend in the bathroom during lunch period." She added with a suggestive wiggle of her eyebrows followed immediately with a laugh, hoping he would understand she was only joking. Obviously she wasn't about to go sneak around with this boy in the bathroom stalls. For one, she wasn't as confident and adventurous as Emma, and for two this was the first time she'd ever even spoken to Jace. Pausing to think for a second, she tried to imagine where would be the best place for them to go. "Do you drive to school? I have a car, we can go somewhere."

There was no hesitation as he turned and followed the girl away from the cafeteria, leaving the noise behind. He hoped that she'd suggest heading to the library or something. There would hardly be anyone in the library at this time. But no. She had to suggest the bathrooms. "Like hell I'd do that," the boy growled. Joking or not, he took it the wrong way. Luckily, her second option was much more appealing. He didn't have a car. The father dropped them off, and the father picked them up. On the days that he couldn't be bothered, they'd take the bus. If they had to stay late, mainly for detention, which happened a lot due to Misery's past attempts to defend himself against the bullies, then they'd have to walk home. Winter tried to think of somewhere that would be better to spend the lunch period than here. There wasn't a whole lot of places he could name that was close by. If they went anywhere that he'd like to go, they wouldn't be back in time for their classes. Toy store! I want to go look at the teddy bears in the window! A child's voice rang clear as day through his mind, almost making him flinch. Sam. He hadn't even felt the kid get near. He shoved the child away, pushing back the overwhelming urge to head to the toy store. "So long as it's far from here, I don't care," he ended up saying.

The silence, while awkward in nature, didn't actually bother him. Winter was a silent person, only speaking when needing to, so the fact that she hadn't forced conversation for the while trip made him feel slightly bit better. "It's not like we're ditching," he pointed out. "Sadly."
He opened his door and got out when she did, closing it a little harder than he had meant to. Glancing around, the boy found that there was no one else here. Perfect.without asking, he set off down one of the paths, knowing the girl would follow.

Hearing her passenger door shutting with a slam as she walked around the front of the truck, Kayleigh shot him a small glare. She didn't need him being rough with her vehicle, but she didn't say anything. She was a bit surprised when he took the lead down a path but was happy to follow him, quickening her pace until she caught up to walk beside him. "But you do that a lot, right? Ditch." She asked, remembering the many times he'd been absent during their math class. She looked around as they walked, enjoying the peaceful quiet of the nature around them. A thought occurred to her and she looked at Jace, a smile returning to her face. "Oh, do you know Derek?" Of course he did, Derek was one of the popular kids at school as well. "He's having a party tonight, I think. Are you going?"

"Most of the time, not by choice," Winter replied, kore to himself than to her. Yes, they didn't go to school a lot if days, but it wasn't because they had decided to not live the normal high school experience. It was mostly due to recovering from one of the father's drunken rages. He was careful most if the time to not do too much that'd leave them unable to act normal, but every so often they'd be hurt to the point a few hours of sleep couldn't fix things. So they simply wouldn't go.
At the mention of Derek, it took him a moment to realize who she meant. There were two Derek's, him, supposedly, and the popular jerk. "Last time I checked, we didn't fit in with his crowd," Winter's answered. "Besides, parties aren't really my thing." Which was true, for him at least. Jace had been known to attend a couple of small gatherings that his few friends had invited him to. Never large parties thrown by the popular kids, though.

(I completely understand that, so no worries. ^^ )
Winter really didn't have an answer to that. He knew what Jace had liked to do in his free time. At least, while he was at school and hanging with his friends. Misery really only ever came out when there was trouble, never taking a moment of rest in fear that he would fail in his duty. He himself had only been around for a handful of days, and with little free time of his own, he hadn't had a chance to discover what he liked to do. "I like music," the boy muttered after a long pause. Yeah, it wasn't really an activity, but it was the one thing he had come across that had actually held his interest whenever he heard it.

"Aw, that sucks." Kayleigh mused, fighting back an annoyed sigh. Seriously, what did was this guy so busy doing that he never had any free time or wasn't allowed out? Another idea came to her. "Well, if you ever have time to go and you need a ride, you can ask me! My friends never want to go with me." She forced herself not to look at him, trying not to appear too excited. She pulled out her phone from her pocket and quickly unlocked it with her thumbprint, opening up the contacts. "Here, I'll take your number." She finally looked at him with a small, hopeful smile as she offered her phone towards him. Smooth, Leigh. Nice going. She was quite pleased with herself.

Winter had reared back, turned and faced the girl, and was on the verge to respond when he felt the pressing weight of Derek surge against his mind. With it brought a wave of loneliness with it so strong it nearly doubled him over. Derek wanted friends, wanted to be with people. He couldn't stand to be alone, yet his shy nature did little to help. Jace had been the one to help him with this. Jace could make friends, set up a safe environment even if he didn't know that was what he was doing. Then Derek would be able to make small appearances. Winter destroyed those environments the moment he pushed those few friends away. Now the other boy was making it very clear he wasn't happy with it. Winter tried to fight it, but there was no pushing this person away.
While he had this short battle on the inside of his mind, on the outside, it simply looked as if he had just lost his train of thought. It continued for a minute before he was able to shake his head. "What I need is some damn peace and quiet," he muttered, but he sounded distant, voice just a bit higher than before. "If this is what it'll take for you to leave me alone, then fine." It was hard for even himself to know if he was talking to Kayleigh or to Derek.

Winter glanced down at her phone, blinking a bit as Derek's will urged him to cooperate. Silence can drive one to madness, huh? Then what did he have to lose? He was already as mad as he ever thought he could be, living with the knowledge of two people's separate experiences and hearing voices. Why was Derek even so concerned with this girl anyway? He never bothered to make himself known when they had to talk to others.
There was the odd moment where he seemed to be floating away, viewing the world through a tunnel. He watched from a distance as his hand took her phone, typed in the number of his own phone, and handed it back to her. Winter struggled to move forwards again, to gain back full control. "D-don't be surprised i-if we don't respond. We're n-not big texters," he heard himself say, but there was a stutter that had crept into his voice that was not his. Derek was close enough that he was affecting the physical state, and pieces of his behavior was seeping through.

"Fine with me," Winter muttered. If they didn't go back to school, he wouldn't argue with it. So long as he was back before his father got there to pick him up, he was good. Well, not good, especially if someone from the school called their father. That possibly wasn't the right term to use. But time to himself was rare, and going back to the noise filled school, crowded hallways, and the taunts and teasing he wouldn't be able to avoid. "But, of course, you'd never do that, would you? Teacher's pet you are."
