wechat is confirmed banned by sunday ((: guess what's the only convenient way for me to video call my bf in China? wechat what's the best way for me to even message him at all outside of American apps? wechat
technically Sunday is when they're stopping downloads, but that also means people won't be able to update the app anymore. I'm going to try to download it on everything possible ahead of time, hope it will work for a while even if I can't get any updates.
guess I might need to invest in a VPN as well....
ugh ):

Wechat is being banned? I thought it was only TikTok, weird.
I'm surprised the USA actually went through with it... I didn't know it was serious.

i still don't get why tiktok or wechat are particularly bad. it's not like we don't already have spyware on every single app that just sells our data to american feds & corporations instead of potentially sending them to feds in china. i really think part of it can be attributed to the new cold war (not saying china is particularly communist, but even the fact that china embraces communist aesthetics and calls its party communist affects how americans see it.) from what i have researched, while it is true that all social media applications have some form of tracking, cookies, etc. for data information and selling, tiktok/wechat went truly above and beyond. there's more than a few videos on youtube from home-grown tech experts explaining just how shady and bad it is. i don't think it's just because it's chinese, because there's loads of other chinese software americans use all the time that isn't under the microscope.

take for example discord, which only has 100 employees (compare to the similarly structured slack with 1,664 employees), has been used by viruses who create bot accounts and mass-friend request users, and has become notorious for hosting alt-right organizers along with servers that prey on minors. i think if an app like discord were to have originated in china, it would be banned in the usa.
i don't really have a stance on if tiktok should be banned in itself, but i do think that what i mentioned is a contributing factor as to why the US is so concerned about it specifically.

What about whatsapp or telegram? china has a ban on both those, along with a bunch of other american apps.
i'm gonna link this article and really hope they're being truthful of what apps are banned in china and aren't just trying to sell us all a VPN.

This raises the question why the USA can't add better security on TikTok and Wechat instead of just outright banning it.
Or maybe, I just don't know enough. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Almost anything that isnt blocked in the China is now blocked in the US what a nightmare. Although several other websites say whatsapp *does* work in china? so i guess try it and see

The evidence for such actions is only "credible evidence".I suppose if the government wanted to they could tighten security over cable lines underwater they could as there aren't that many(although there is Starlink internet now so...). However, that basically means reading all your data(probably illegal) and they can't anyway unless they have quantum computers that break encryption.

does fb messenger not work over there? sorry dude most stuff like that is banned, for the most part. we do mostly talk through instagram on a day to day basis for texting, but I really need wechat on my end for the times we can't communicate that way and also for videochat. his VPN is too slow to use for videochat on instagram, and it would be the same thing even if we moved to another banned app (on his end)

What about whatsapp or telegram? when he wakes up I'm gonna ask him if he can use those. I thought whatsapp is available over there, but there seems to be mixed responses online as to if it is or not

so tiktok was saved(?) by being bought by walmart (yaaaay for monopolies getting more money :| )
as for wechat, some fed judge blocked the ban!! at least temporarily really hope they'll come to some sort of agreement with the trump admin
I think if the government is that upset by this app, just ban it from gov officials phones like Australia did or smth
