It was waking up to his own heartbeat that always caught Myrnin off guard. He kept remembering stopping it before he did go to sleep in the first place, like he had for centuries, but now it didn't seem to take. Waking up should have been a surprise to, for that matter, but after a couple years of it it was possibly the one thing he could stand. The dreams still hadn't returned. He wasn't existing on little to no sleep. (Technically he didn't have to sleep at all, but that was besides the point. It was easier to pass the time if he did.) He did dream though. So opening his eyes on the slope of a hill was a bit of a new experience. It reminded him of the lucid dreams he used to get. Slightly hopeful, he wondered if they were coming back. Maybe this was a ... But he cut the thought off. No. No, this was a bit too real even for that. He stood, the movement awkward and slow to his mind. If he had a choice, he would have remained sitting so he'd have the illusion of control. But then he wouldn't be able to see through the low growing strubbery. He looked at all the trees suspiciously. He could smell the Master. That was a bit clear. But the scent was stale. Hours old, at the soonest. Maybe all of the night. "What's he playing at?" Myrnin murmured. He turned slowly, standing straight only because collapsing back to the ground would look undignified if he had a silent witness somewhere. He was still eyeing the trees with suspicion. The TARDIS of the Doctor's would have been easier to locate. The Master's would be near impossible. Myrnin closed his eyes, focusing very specifically on the Master. He stepped forward, shins hitting a bush, then backed up when he noted that as not being the answer. Then he stepping in all the other directions. He even jumped a bit on his heals. Finally, he opened his eyes, a trickle of fear running down his spine. This was the strongest place that he could smell his ... friend. There was no place to hide. He wasn't hiding. He was just ... gone. The words from several years ago, the anger at Myrnin and the threat to toss him out, rang in Myrnin's ears. He spun on last time before he just sat down. It seemed too much effort to stand. What did he do now? He didn't even know where he was.

Orpheus was tired. He didn’t know how many days it had been since he’d emerged from the Underworld, and he didn’t think he really cared. Time didn’t matter now that he no longer had Eurydice to share it with. Time didn’t matter now that countless lives were trapped in the Underworld and he had failed to save them. Orpheus was nothing but false hope. At some point, he couldn’t quite recall when, Orpheus had just collapsed in the field on the side of the road, staring at the stars as though they’d give him an answer of some sort. He knew normally he would have pulled out his lyre and provided himself his own sort of company, his own comfort, but his lyre was long gone now. The world felt heavier now than it ever had before. There was silence in his head, where normally there was music, and he found that sitting up was a near impossible feat of strength. He heard movement nearby, and quietly hoped it was just a traveler going about their business. Orpheus wasn’t quite so certain he could deal with it if it was something else. He didn’t want to die. That was the issue here. If he’d been willing to die for Eurydice, perhaps he wouldn’t feel the crushing guilt that pressed so hard on him now. Perhaps he wouldn’t be quite so worried that the person he heard coming nearby was a murderer, or someone willing to mug a penniless poet. Then the sound stopped. Whoever had been nearing Orpheus had apparently stopped walking. It was quiet enough that Orpheus would have heard whoever it was if they had turned around. Quietly (but not quietly enough), Orpheus pushed himself to his feet to investigate. If someone needed help, then… then good. It would give Orpheus something to think about other than his own failure. And if someone had come to rub it in? Well, currently nobody could do a better job of hating Orpheus than Orpheus himself.

The wind was blowing away from Myrnin, so it took him longer than usual to scent Orpheus. And hearing him had taken longer to register in his head. If it had been the other way around, he might have had the false hope that he wasn't alone. Then there was someone standing nearby. Myrnin could hear the movement and, if he focused, the heartbeat. What else was there to do other than to stand as well. Myrnin got to his feet, feeling all of this was a bit laborious. What was the point in ignoring what was going on? "Who are you?" Myrnin asked when he saw Orpheus. On the bright side ... while he knew he wasn't in London, he at least knew that wherever he was he should be able to understand the answer. At least being on a TARDIS for any length of time afforded you something. This wasn't London. He knew that at least. He didn't know where he was. The climate was familiar, but that didn't mean anything. It just meant that the climate was familiar and that the person he was looking at appeared to be human. (Then again, so did Myrnin.) The clothing didn't match, though. That was a bit of a hint.

Orpheus’ eyes widened when the other person stood up. He hadn’t actually expected whoever it was to respond to his movement, but he was relieved that at least he could see the stranger. And maybe help, if that was needed. He looked… odd. He was wearing things that Orpheus had never seen before, so he was probably a traveler, or… theoretically, he could be a god. Orpheus didn’t find that very likely. What would a god want with him, especially after his colossal failure? “My name’s Orpheus,” he replied quietly, not daring to take a step closer. He didn’t know who the stranger was, and for all he knew, he was armed. Orpheus didn’t have anything to defend himself with, even a song. He swallowed slowly, eyes meeting Myrnin’s for just a moment. The man looked… confused, to say the least. “Who are you?” he echoed, hoping that the man would answer. Orpheus wished he knew better where he was. That way if the man needed directions or anything, Orpheus might be able to help. But Orpheus didn’t know how far he’d wandered after he left the Underworld. He was probably just as lost as this stranger probably was. “Are… you alright?” he added, taking another look at the man. There was something wrong, he just didn’t know what.

It was with several blinks of his eyelashes that Myrnin took in what Orpheus was saying. He understood every word, of course, but that didn't mean he understood it. He just got that there was an issue somewhere, probably with himself, and the man had noticed. Myrnin forced a smile onto his face. "Just ... just not sure where I am." He glanced around. "Where ... where am I?" He was trying to be polite, even though he had a sinking suspicion that something was wrong with where he was. This wasn't right. He didn't know where he was, but it wasn't ... it wasn't ... He was in the past, wasn't he? He was. The Master had left him somewhere completely random, who knew when. But there wasn't a single sign of a tennis shoe and he was pretty sure there shouldn't have been this little sense that he was somewhere familiar. It was ... it was something else. "Who are you?" he tried. Had he answered the questions Orpheus had asked? No, not really. But he was too tired to lie. "Myrnin," he said after a second. "My name is Myrnin."

Orpheus frowned, but he didn’t press further. Unless the man was deep in his cups, he was probably injured. That would account for how he didn’t know where he was. It was too early to tell why he didn’t know, but Orpheus had the sinking suspicion it was the latter, not the former. Of course, the one that would be more difficult to help with. “Thrace,” he responded, meeting Myrnin’s gaze. “One of the biggest regions in Greece. Do you know where Thrace is?” Simple things first. Things the man would – hopefully – be able to answer. Besides, even if he couldn’t get much more specific, Orpheus was fairly certain they were in Thrace. It wasn’t entirely a lie. Relief washed across Orpheus’ face once Myrnin gave his name. The fact that he knew it was a good sign, and that he was comfortable enough to give it was also probably good. “Nice to meet you, Myrnin,” he replied quietly. “Do you know where you’re from? I can… I can try to help you get there. Might help orient me too. I don’t… I don’t know exactly where we are. I’ve been wandering.” Was that too much information to give a stranger?

Thrace. Myrnin groaned and placed his head in his hands. He would have loved to slowly sink to the ground, but that was a bit unreasonable when he’d just left it. Instead, he tried focusing on Orpheus. He spread his fingers enough that he could see the other man. “No. No, I know where Thrace is,” he said. He knew geography. Ancient geography. Even a bit of the clothing. “I just … I …” He wasn’t supposed to be here. Generally speaking. He was supposed to be in the time he’d chronologically lived up to. Not one before he was even born. He chuckled dryly and shook his head. It was chuckle or cry, those were his options. “I don’t think you can help me get where I’m supposed to be. I’m not supposed to be in Greece. I was dumped her.” He rubbed at his elbows and looked around again. He wanted out of this place. He just wanted … Wanted to go home. Wanted to be normal. But home and normal existed in his memories, not an actual destination. Even if he had a time machine. “Where are you wandering to?” he asked offhandedly. It was the only thing he could think of to say.

“Not supposed to be in Greece?” Orpheus repeated, confused. “Did you… did you anger your gods, or something?” That was the only way he could see for someone not from Greece to end up in Greece so suddenly. If the man had travelled in any of the normal ways, he would have passed by a city or something, anything to tell him where he was headed. Besides, he did say he was dumped, not that he travelled. “Or did you just… travel the wrong direction…?” That was a question meant just for politeness’ sake. In case Myrnin didn’t want to talk about whatever had landed him here. Gods knew Orpheus didn’t want to talk about his own run-in with his gods. “Where are you from, if you don’t mind saying?” He asked after a moment. “I might be able to help you get there, really. I’m not… it’s not like I’m going anywhere specific, I mean.” He gave a small sigh. “I’m just sort of going. So really, if I can help, nowhere’s too far out of the way for me. Unless you don’t want my help. In which case I’ll just…” he pointed awkwardly behind him. He was willing to leave if that was what Myrnin wanted.

"Something like that," Myrnin said, huffing through his nose. There was no way he'd call the Master a god. He might have nicknamed him "Mythology" and the Master might have an old name based of a god-like being (or visa versa) but Myrnin wasn't going to think that deeply into the philosophical issues of who had technically created the body he was walking around with. In. Whatever. It still didn't feel like his, so "in" was still the word that felt most accurate. Nice gift and all, but he would have liked it without all the pesky, human quality bugs. "No. No, I think I made someone mad." His face had fallen. "And I'm very sorry. But I doubt he'll listen to me." He rubbed at the place between his eyes. "And you? Why are you out in the middle of nowhere?" Clearly oblivious to Orpheus' lack of desire to talk about it. He hadn't noticed. There was other things on his mind. Where was he from? "Right now?" He looked around. He wasn't born yet. The closest thing that had ever felt like home wouldn't be made for several centuries. Nowhere was home, even if it was there. He didn't think they'd ... well, he didn't and wouldn't want to face them right now. "It doesn't exist anymore," he said softly. "I guess. I guess I can't ..." Go back. He rested his head in his hand again.

“Oh.” Orpheus’ brow creased, and though he wanted to ask more questions, he had a feeling that might not be the best course of action. He didn’t want to upset Myrnin, not when it seemed there was already enough going on to upset him. “That’s alright.” It made it much more difficult to help him, but maybe he didn’t want help. He flinched away from the question when it was turned on him, staring at the horizon as though he could just undo what had happened. “I messed up,” he admitted after a moment. “I lost someone I loved, and when I tried to get her back I just… made it worse.” He shrugged. Myrnin was being honest with him about his own struggles, which meant it would be rude for Orpheus to not be honest about his. “I think it’s easier to wander than go back to places that remind me of her…” Deep down, he was a little bit envious of Myrnin. Not that he would say it, but life would be so much easier if Thrace didn’t exist anymore. There would be nothing to remind him of Eurydice. Nothing to mock him for his failure. He gave a soft sigh, wanting nothing more than to flop back down onto the grass and lose himself in his misery. “I’m sorry.” He bowed his head, trying to think of another solution. Trying to help solve Myrnin’s problem when his own problem was unsolvable. “We can wander together, if you want,” he offered before thinking the words through. “I mean… until you find someplace you want to stay. I just think… maybe…” he sighed softly, hating the fact that he didn’t seem to have the right words. “I think maybe it would be better for both of us not to have to be alone.”

Though he wished he hadn't asked, Myrnin still listened. Or he tried to anyway. It was a matter of keeping his head on the situation. He managed it, but only with effort. He wasn't sure if he understood. And then he did. Getting back someone from the dead. When had he heard that one before? Additionally, he wasn't just referring to himself. He tried not to sigh over that little mental connection. He wasn't sure he wanted to dwell over Orpheus' identity. Alone. A part of him very deeply wanted to be alone. But he knew what would happen if that was the case. He'd curl in on himself and never move. That didn't mean he jumped at the chance to follow Orpheus, however. It would place Orpheus in danger if Myrnin went with him. He's a human, his thoughts pointed out. He'll die soon enough. And Myrnin wouldn't. Living as himself long enough to see another life end, if he traveled that long, but not long enough to actually make it back to his own, previous existence. It was a tense choice. He wanted the surroundings to echo with the sound of a familiar friend. But it didn't happen. "Alright," he said quietly. It was the best he had. It was the only thing he had. And he'd take it, because what else could he do? "Which way are we ... wandering?"

"There are boats," said Myrnin after a second. And as if those were the words which got him to move, that was exactly what he did. His shoes hit the ground at a new, but decent pace. And he looked back. Of course he looked back. At the place he'd appeared, waiting to see if anyone would want him back. If there was a way that there would be a way back. But there was no sign of what he needed to see. A brisk breeze blew around his fingers, bringing a change in temperature that had Myrnin clutching his fingers into fists. He looked back in the direction that Orpheus was doubtlessly headed. "A long way to find your heart or your head," Myrnin quipped under his breath. He wasn't sure where Orpheus' thoughts were. His own weren't much to go off of. They weren't exactly positive. The fact that he couldn't move how he wanted or look how he wanted didn't help. "Did you ...?" he asked, but wasn't sure what he was looking for. So he trailed off, hoping Orpheus would fill the silence. Fill in the distraction.

“Do you… want to go to the ocean?” Orpheus asked carefully, turning to look at Myrnin. “I… spent a lot of time on a boat, before things went wrong. We almost didn’t survive, but we ended up making it. I don’t know if a crew of two would be able to make it that far…” If Orpheus had known that Myrnin was technically not going to die for a long time, he may have been more willing to try to the ocean. It was just that two completely mortal people against something that had almost taken down some of the greatest heroes Greece had ever seen? Orpheus was fine wandering; he just didn’t want to wander to his death. Was that selfish of him, when Eurydice was dead? When she was alone in the underworld? A wall slammed down around Orpheus’ thoughts, trying to protect him from those memories of Eurydice. The ones that hurt so badly, the ones where he ruined everything. He gave Myrnin a look as he heard the next words, but there was nothing malicious in it. He didn’t know how to feel. “I lost my heart. I’m not sure I want to find it again. But if I can find my head…” he swallowed, setting his gaze on the horizon. It was easier. “Did I what?” He genuinely didn’t know what Myrnin had been about to say. He was too tired to try to fill in the gaps – grief made it hard to sleep.

"It was just an option," Myrnin admitted. "I have no particular desire one way or another." He wasn't sure what the sea would offer. Before, at this time, it would have offered fear and death. There would have been creatures beyond nightmare in the water. Apparently Orpheus understood that concept. But those dangers didn't hold as much power over Myrnin's head as they might have before. Maybe that was a good thing. Maybe it was the only good thing that had yet to come out of this. "We're not to any large body of water yet," Myrnin said. "Such expectations of the future are a bit far ahead of us." He could still see the place they had left if he looked back. He didn't look back more than once, again, and then his eyes fixed on the horizon again. He silently regretted asking Orpheus any personal questions. "Guess it's up to seeing what we can find," he said, voice quiet. He shaded his eyes for a second, then kept walking. He waved a hand, suddenly not sure what he had wanted say before. It didn't seem important all of a sudden. He walked in silence, not sure what to say after that.

Orpheus considered Myrnin’s words, doing his best to figure out what to make of the man before him. It was clear Myrnin was lost, or that he had lost something. Or both. It was also clear he seemed about ambivalent as Orpheus felt, which was probably not a great way to begin a journey. Orpheus knew running away was a bad idea. He knew he would always feel like he was adrift, and he’d been okay with that when he had set off. Being adrift in the world was better than being grounded without Eurydice. The only issue now was that he didn’t want to force that existence on a stranger. He didn’t want to drag Myrnin into a life of wandering aimlessly. He was grateful for the company, but he didn’t want to make it harder on his new friend than it had to be. Friend. That was a weird thought, especially considering the way Myrnin looked at him. Or maybe that was just the way Myrnin looked at everything. “Maybe we’ll find somewhere nice,” he managed softly, forcing himself to smile. The expression felt foreign and unwarranted. It felt like a betrayed to Eurydice, though he knew she would tell him it wasn’t. He missed her. Gods, he missed her. “Maybe we’ll find something that will make us want to stay in one place.” That was all Orpheus could wish for. Something important enough to stay put for.

"Hum," said Myrnin, off hand and with his head tilted so he could see the sky. If there was one thing about moving, even if every step felt unreal, it was at least a distraction. Orpheus was distracting. And it made him wonder what the nearest town would be like, but only the next town. Not as far as Orpheus thought. He wanted something else. He wanted a chance to think about one thing at a time and thus far, there wasn't enough to be said about this journey. It might as well have two silent creatures walking side by side, unable to talk, because that was exactly what it felt like to Myrnin. He wanted to run. But there wasn't anywhere to run to and he was achingly slow. Human. Practically human. "Say the word when you want to stop," he said softly.

Orpheus fell silent, walking for as long as his feet would comfortably take him. He walked until the verge of collapse, keeping in mind that his companion didn’t even seem to falter. It was amazing, though Orpheus never said it out loud. His companion didn’t seem to want to talk, and that was perfectly alright with Orpheus. Anything could be a sore subject, and Orpheus would rather walk in silence than risk upsetting Myrnin. Or invite Myrnin to ask about things that Orpheus didn’t want to think about. There were plenty of those subjects – the ones Orpheus dreaded being asked about. The silence would be better with music. The thought came unbidden, and Orpheus tried to push it away. He was done with music. It didn’t do any good anyway. Wasn’t he a walking example of that? “Maybe we should camp for the night,” Orpheus managed after several unsuccessful hours of trying to get his mind to shut up. Maybe if he slept, things would be normal in the morning. He knew it was impossible, but he still hoped. Besides, he was tired enough to sleep now. He hadn’t really been able to since everything had gone wrong.

Sleep. It was something Myrnin hadn't thought to consider, but he knew was necessary for his very human companion. Of course. He ... he hadn't forgotten, so much as ... This was all going to sink in as soon as they stopped. But it was also unavoidable if he was going to stay with Orpheus. So, very carefully, he nodded. "Alright." He wasn't sure what was best. For him, he could just curl up on the road and it would be all the same. So for the time being, he settled for nodding off the road. A night by yourself. In an unfamiliar place. Not Morganville. Not "your" room on the TARDIS. Not "your" room at O's house. Just with your own thoughts and a human you hardly know. At some point, if he kept this up, some stranger was going to try and kill him ... he could tell. "How far away from the road?" he asked.

Orpheus didn’t know Myrnin didn’t need sleep. He didn’t know Myrnin wasn’t like him. He was just trying to do what was best for both him and his companion, but he had no idea how to do that. He didn’t even know most of what he didn’t know. Even if Myrnin were human, he wouldn’t have known how to help him very well. He was barely taking care of himself, barely keeping himself alive. He was doing the best he could given the circumstances. If Orpheus had known Myrnin was worried about a stranger killing him, he would have told him he was sick and tired of death, and he wouldn’t let anyone else die on his watch. If he could prevent it… knowing him, he’d fail at that, too. “A couple meters, maybe?” Orpheus managed, making his way off the road. “Far enough away that we won’t be seen from the road, just in case.”

That seemed to be a fair amount of distance to Myrnin. He followed after Orpheus, down and away from the road. His steps were just a bit stumbling, intentionally kicking up a scrap of dirt here and there. When he got that many meters away from the road and he no longer had to think to much about where he was, he sat down. He didn't mind the hardness of the earth or the scrape of the plant life against his skin. Instead, he just slowly tipped over until his head could rest on his arm. "Night," he said. He'd be keeping watch. Checking the stars. Seeing if anything else was out there.

Orpheus woke up only a few hours later, while the stars were still out and the sun just barely peeking over the horizon. “You haven’t slept,” he observed quietly, pushing himself to a seated position and looking over at Myrnin. He had expected his companion to sleep, or wake him up so they could take shifts, or… or something. “Drachma for your thoughts?” he added after a moment, scooting a little bit closer. He didn’t know his new travelling companion at all. He wanted to, if it were possible. If Myrnin were willing to share. Orpheus wasn’t sure he would have, in Myrnin’s place, but if they were going to be travelling together they had to start somewhere.

"I wouldn't say my thoughts are worth that much," Myrnin said with a humph. But he did turn his head in the direction of Orpheus and blinked several times. Yeah. It was true he hadn't slept. He had hoped it wouldn't be as obvious as it clearly was. Standing, the not exactly a vampire looked Orpheus over. "Were you ready to head to a new location?" he asked. "My thoughts revolve around what I've left behind." Or who had left him behind. "Maybe finding something ahead will be better." It was the only thing which he could think of. That in itself would be helpful to get his mind out of things.

“I think your thoughts are worth plenty,” Orpheus responded a smile poking at his lips in spite of himself. He may not have known his companion very well, but he wanted to make it perfectly clear that if Myrnin was ever so inclined to share Orpheus would be happy to listen. But if Myrnin didn’t want to share, no hard feelings. It wasn’t as though Orpheus was interested in talking about his feelings either. Not since they involved Eurydice. “I think that’s a good idea,” Orpheus returned quietly, looking ahead. “I’ll admit, though, I don’t really have any ideas of where to go. But… perhaps we’ll find someplace we enjoy. Or at the very least, a place one of us might enjoy.” That was, truthfully, all he dared hope for. That maybe at least one of them would find something to bring them temporary joy. “At least… it’s worth going somewhere, just in case.”

"People," Myrnin said after a while. He knew as well as Orpheus must that they needed people. They could travel all they liked and he thought that he might be able to manage without going insane - much - but he couldn't catch food or anything like that. He didn't think Orpheus could either. And Orpheus would need something eventually. Either way, he didn't seem incompetent, but he did seem ... ditzy. Myrnin felt like he had to at least sort of look after him. Or that there was any way for them to really work out ... how to not feel so lonely. "We need ... to work out where to go." Something. A purpose of some sort. He ... needed something. Or he'd float into the void of his own thoughts. And he thought Orpheus might soon follow. Or visa versa. "Where's a town. You need ..." He looked down. Then up. Then down again. "... things." He couldn't think of anything specifically, but that was alright. It would be fine. He had to believe that he'd just asked for the right thing.

People sounded… both nice, and terrible. People would look at Orpheus and see how wretched he both felt and looked. They would see him, and they would see through any mask he tried to put on that he wasn’t happy. There was a part of him missing that he couldn’t get back. But Myrnin was right. They needed people, because people meant food and shelter, and not necessarily having to wander for eternity alone. “Maybe there’ll be a map if we find a town.” If they had a destination… would that help? It wasn’t like Orpheus was going to find what he was looking for if he went to the next town over, and he had a feeling it was similar for his companion. “Don’t you need… things… too?” he asked, tilting his head. It seemed odd that Myrnin thought Orpheus was the only one who needed anything. “Like… like food, or…” what did people need? “Firewood…” He closed his eyes, trying to stay on his feet. He couldn’t think about Eurydice now. He couldn’t think aobut how he had failed her, more times than one. Maybe… maybe he wouldn’t fail his companion. Maybe he was capable enough to get both him and Myrnin somewhere… safe.

"Maps," Myrnin mumbled under his breath. As if maps would really direct either of them to what they needed. "Yeah," he murmured under his breath. "Firewood." He honestly wasn't prepared for something like that. Fires, that was. He didn't want to have to show Orpheus just how much he was afraid of such things. That seemed to be too personal. But in any case. He was willing to do such things for his traveling companion. In any case, he didn't feel like lying. So he'd just repeated the last word that Orpheus had said. He tapped the other man's shoulder and moved forward, stepping along the path. He wasn't sure what was ahead. He hadn't felt hunger or really needed to eat for ages. For a year at least. More than that, really, if the self-imposed stasis still counted. "This way, Orpheus," he said softly. "Roads lead somewhere." And he desperately wanted to arrive someplace.

Orpheus looked up, following Myrnin’s gaze and the way he was headed. “I guess they do,” he murmured softly, shrugging. It was better than nothing. And walking places where others had walked was safer than forging his own path ahead. Orpheus had learned that lesson clear enough. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to banish the memory. “So,” he managed, trying to catch Myrnin’s gaze, “What do you like to do… you know, when not wandering aimlessly and trying to find some sort of civilization?” Was it rude to try to get to know the man he was travelling with? He could tell that Myrnin had plenty of questions he didn’t want to answer, and Orpheus had his fair share of those as well. Still… the one he asked seemed relatively harmless. Hobbies… well, hobbies weren’t extraordinarily personal, and hopefully they wouldn’t remind Myrnin of whatever it was he was trying to avoid. The silence was dreadful.

The silence was cloying. Myrnin wasn't sure if he could break it either. It seemed difficult, like more than a word was standing between them. It was too hard to work things out when they were like this. "I'm not sure," he said after a second. He rubbed a hand through his hair and sighed. It was not in the least something he wanted to get into - that his interests were a world away. "What about you though?" This seemed like it was going in a productive direction. He fingered the edge of his clothing. It felt uncomfortable now. He felt like he needed something ... planer. Which meant he had nothing to talk about. He sighed just a little. "What do you want to do, Orpheus? What would make things better?" He sounded just a touch hopeless.
