THE WORLD This is an original, medieval fantasy roleplay which takes place in an imagined world and culture. The plot centers around the selection of a new generation of leaders in a country called Ilenfore. According to an astrological calendar created by the gods, a new royal โcircleโ must be assembled every century. This process demands that ten people between the ages of 19-30 be nominated by their respective institutions called the โPillars.โ The Pillars are a collection of religious, academic, and military powers throughout the country. These institutions have been in place for nearly a thousand years. They were selected by the New Governors in the first year when the country became an oligarchy/republic rather than a monarchy.
The Pillars represent all aspects of life within the country, namely cult practice, war, knowledge, industry, and mysticism. They are regarded as equally important to the governance of the nation, which is why each is represented within the government. The motivation behind creating the pillars was to assemble a royal grouping which best represented all the people of Ilenfore, no matter their class or creed. The candidate which is nominated by each of the pillars best embodies the values of that pillar. That being said, politics is a messy business, and a thousand years is a long time for corruption to fester. Each of the leaders within the Pillars have their own agendas, and sometimes they act in their own self interest rather than in the interest of the people. Ilenfore is just as susceptible to greed and corruption as any other nation; that much is clear now more than ever in its history.

RUNDOWN This roleplay was created with the intention of involving others in the world-building process. I want everyone who joins to have the ability to add to the lore, culture, and mythology of the world if they so choose. For this reason, I created a plot which centers around people from very different backgrounds, all with very different agendas. The Pillars and the Royal Circle are the results of that. There are ten members of the royal circle, because there are ten pillars. That means, logically, there will be ten main characters.
Now, I will be giving a brief description of all of the Pillars and their role within the society, however, when you join, please feel free to add details and color within the lines regarding that Pillar and all the other aspects of your characters' background. Hopefully this way we can create a more intricate tapestry together, one in which everyone feels comfortable to contribute creatively. This to say that I hope no one will fear getting the lore wrong. All of what is on the front page was created on a whim by me, and have no problems with adding things or changing them. If you have an idea for a character who grew up a small town with a rich culture and they wear specific clothes and believe unusual things, that's awesome! Go for it!
THE PLOT The main story will center around the assembly of the ten members of the royal circle. Each will have been recently chosen or nominated by their institution and their life will change drastically as they suddenly become one of the most important people in the nation. Ilenfore is currently at war with two neighboring countries, Tellren and Ravenile. As the royal circle begin to settle into their new duties, they will realize how deep the corruption runs within their country. Will they be able to unite their people against the common enemy? Or will they succumb to the pressure of running a nation which seems determine to implode from the inside?

GEOGRAPHY The country is on the smaller side, think more city state than expansive kingdom. The climate is largely hot to mild, depending on how close one is to the mountains. Most of its population lives in the main city, called Cypra. There is also a sister city called Nasso, but more on both of them later. Other than that, the other half of the population is scattered across the country in smaller hamlets, towns, sanctuaries, and farms. The country is split into two parts geographically. The northeastern part is forested and rather mountainous, though not the sharp-edged mountains that some other countries boast. In fact, the majority of the land is low in elevation. This part of the country is covered in predominantly deciduous forests, rolling mountains, and hidden valleys. There is also some farmland, mostly small crops and orchards. The southwestern half of the country is much flatter. Only shallow hills and rivers break up the land, which contains few forests. It is rather dry, but it has good soil for growing some crops and certain areas can be surprisingly lush. These are called the "Flatlands" for self-explanatory reasons. This is also where the military has its two largest forts and its where soldiers go to train.
โ CYPRA: The largest city in the country and home to about a third of its population. It sits in the foothills of the mountains, in a bend along the edges of the forest. It is built mostly around the Arch House, which is the palace that the royals call home. The palace sits on a protruding hill in the center of the city. The further up the hill one wanders, the more lavish and expensive the houses get. The palace itself is named for the prominent trio of arches on the front of the large house made of pristine sandstone. The palace has four stories and extensive rooms (there are ten royals to house, after all). There is also a central garden and pool, an auditorium, and rooms for entertaining. Below the palace are the homes of the most important people in Cypra, mostly advisors and other political figures. Further down the hill are aristocrats and wealthy merchants. Below them is the marketplace, and then surrounding the city are the houses of the less fortunate, the common people and workers who make the city function. Cypra is a center of trade and it is where all of the farmers come to sell their goods. It is also the home of the Mercenaries' Guild and the Silo, both of which have buildings in the center of town. It is illegal for sanctuaries and temples to be built within the city limits, however, which is why Nasso is considered the "Sacred City" despite being much smaller and less essential to the larger economy.
โ NASSO: About fifteen miles to the south of Cypra, toward the Flatlands, is the city of Nasso. It is impossible to miss the city as it sits in the center of a very large floodplain on a bed of red clay. "This is not the most practical place to build a city," one might think to themselves, and this is true, however the precarious nature of the city is what lends itself to being considered sacred. The land it occupies is very flat and water from heavy rain can create countless shallow streams. For that reason, during the monsoons, the city can find itself in up to six inches of water. Thankfully this is usually only for a matter of days before the water dries or drains into the river. This is also why there is little to no vegetation in the city itself. Instead, it is occupied only by stark marble structures and streets that have long since been blanketed in red clay. Nasso was originally constructed by the New Governors in year one as the designated place for all religious activity. Its prominent buildings are temples and treasuries dedicated to the gods, all of whom are represented by at least one structure, if not multiple. The structures are inevitably eroded over time. Some are maintained. Others must be rebuilt every few years by the Architects who not only replicate the beautiful architecture, but add newer and more elegant elements each time, only to see them fall once more. The city is also guarded by colossal clay statues of the gods. The ankles of the statues are slowly eaten away until they topple, only to be reconstructed by the many artists who call Nasso their home.
There are a good number of people who live in Nasso permanently, namely the very poor and those involved directly with the cults/churches. But it is also the birthplace of several cultural bedrocks including the University which is about a mile outside the city on higher ground. It also is home to the Cult of the Burned Hand, and the Architects.

(I haven't fully fleshed out the pillars. If one strikes your fancy, feel free to adopt it and do some world building around it. In the parenthesis, I've designated whether the royal from that pillar will be male or female. If it says "rigid" then it means that that pillar will only ever have royals of one gender. The army, for example, is comprised entirely of men, so they cannot pick a female to represent them. )
Cult of the Blue Moth (f, rigid) โ There is a shared religion in the country which worships ten gods. The Cult of the Blue Moth is dedicated to only one of those gods, called Ysella, who is the goddess of a number of things namely prophecy, fertility, and "feminine virtues." The cult is a coveted aspect of the culture, and it is an honor for any young woman to be welcomed into the ranks. The cult is very mysterious. Girls can be sent there for initiation as early as age seven, and once inducted they usually attend ceremonies once or twice a year. The cult is based in a sanctuary in the mountains. Some of the known practices include ritualized bathing, sacrifices, and the planting of blue flowers in a sacred garden. Women of the Cult of the Blue Moth live among regular society however they are considered particularly suited for special duties such as lucrative marriages and specific religious duties. The best among them are chosen to live at the sanctuary, which is a beautiful and serene estate tucked into the guarded embrace of the forest. A common image of the Cult of the Blue Moth is women in white gowns wading into water. No one knows why water is so sacred to the cult, or if they do, they will not say for fear of angering the gods.
Army of the Osprey (m, rigid) โ The Army of the Osprey is a branch of the military that is considered the most prestigious. The men who comprise it are specially selected and trained starting at the age of five following aptitude tests in school. It is much more strict than any other branch of the military as its soldiers are forbidden to have families or to live outside of the barracks until they have been discharged (this only happens once they graduate to higher ranks or if they are permanently injured). The Army of the Osprey teaches precision, duty, sacrifice, etc. Its troops are the secret weapon in any battle, and they are best known for riding with the cavalry on all silver horses. They wear winged helmets and at the age of nineteen they are awarded their special armor of shining silver. Soldiers are expected to keep their hair shoulder-length and maintain many other standards such as daily shining of their armor and strict diets.
The University (f) โ The University was founded early into the country's origin. It is the place where many of the well-bred, educated families send their children to get an education in countless subjects. It offers a variety of specialized knowledge such as astronomy, mathematics, history, science, and religious studies. The University actually has a reputation across all the continent, and a significant portion of their students come from other countries. It is the place in Ilenfore with the largest percentage of foreign people who come from many cultures, however most of them are wealthy and privileged. Another thing that makes the school unique is that it accepts both male and female students and faculty. Ilenfore is considered progressive in the sense that women are viewed as equally capable of working in specialized fields. Otherwise, the University is more or less what one would expect. It is just outside of Nasso, though it is not on the floodplain. The campus is large enough to house a student population of approximately two thousand. Questions have begun to arise about the quality of the ownership, however, as the school faces growing accusations of being more involved in politics than they perhaps ought to be. Some rumors even claim that the headmaster is a member of the Burning Hand and has his own religious agenda.
House of the Swans (m) โ The children of the royal families. As one of the Pillars, they represent Bloodlines and Prestige within the country. They live in a sanctuary just outside Nasso. It is regarded as the most beautiful place on the continent. It has white architecture and is centered around a man-made lake called The Looking Glass (which is the home to a number of swans, which is where the house gets its name). All of the direct progeny of the royal family live in the House of the Swans, which is really a collection of houses on a large plot of land. They hold no official titles or government power, though they inevitably have become entangled in politics because of their bloodlines and because they have so much wealth. Only direct descendants of royalty (within the last two generations) are permitted to live in the estate. The public perception of the House of the Swans is that they are meddling elitists who do nothing to earn their substantial allowance from the state. But there is nothing the people can do to disrupt the tradition as Royals are the ones who get the last say about where their children end up. The estate includes a large library, a tutor for the children, and a temple dedicated to Xenire, God of Blood.
The Architects (m) โ The city of Nasso is known across the continent for its ephemeral beauty. Existing on a floodplain means that the city is constantly being washed and renewed by water. This is what makes the city sacred: the gods are constantly washing it clean of waste and fragility. In order to maintain the temples, sanctuaries, and other buildings within the city, constant construction and rebuilding is required by a guild of workers called the Architects. What began as a relatively small group has grown to a collection of dozens of men who are tasked with rebuilding, redesigning, and conceptualizing the buildings of Nasso. These are not simply construction workers, the Architects are among the most respected and essential people in all the city. They are on the level of the priests and priestesses, for they too carry out the will of the gods. Along with designing buildings, some of the Architects also design the colossal statues that surround the city, all of which are made of clay and typically only last 1-2 years due to the floods. All members of the Architects guild must be born in the city of Nasso. They come from all walks of life and are trained for many years. Their services are paid for through taxation, though some argue that it is a waste of money to be constantly rebuilding structures that will inevitably topple.
The Silo (f) โ Farmers in many cultures considered to be on a lower rung of society. This is only half true in Ilenfore. As will many places, the farmers are mostly self-sufficient, salt-of-the-earth people who live in rural areas. And for much of history, they had little political power or influence. This changed when the Pillars were instated. Now, all the farmers in the country collectively make up one of the Pillars. This means that once every century, they are allowed to nominate one among them to be considered royalty. That person then represents the Farmers in all political matters and advocates on their behalf. This is less idealistic than it seems, however, given the royal farmer is often outnumbered by their equals of aristocratic and wealthy backgrounds. That being said, the royal farmer is usually considered a champion of the people and are sometimes worshiped like gods by the common people. They, along with the Weavers, come from poor backgrounds and have typically advocated for the rights of working class people.
Church of the Burned Hand (m, rigid) โ The counterpart to the Cult of the Blue Moth is the Church of the Burned Hand. Both are religious groups steeped in a certain amount of mystery and elitism. While the Blue Moth is exclusively for female citizens, the Church of the Burned Hand is only for men. Boys are recruited starting at the age of thirteen. Not much is known about what exactly the Church does. Their members all wear black cloaks lined with orange, bearing the sigil of a hand in flames. They are a large sponsor of the Architects given they have a large presence in Nasso. Mostly they can be seen at religious gatherings, typically travelling in a group of three men roughly the same age. Some rumors claim that the trios are involved in romantic relationships, which is supported by the fact that none of the men are allowed to marry (unless they leave the church). Polyamory is actually celebrated in Ilenfory culture as it is something that exists in mythology. It is also heavily speculated that polyamory is regularly practiced among the Royals, who are encouraged to have children but only within their group of ten and who are also never allowed to marry. Another rumor claims that the Church practices necromancy. Again, not much is known about what the members of the cult take part in. They are known to worship Valkire, the god of fire, rebirth, and justice. They also worship is godly son, Alinar, who is god of ash, death, and ceremony.
Mercenariesโ Guild (f) โ Though the army fights on behalf of the nation in the war, violent disputes are not uncommon in Ilenfore. When soldiers cannot get involved, it is common practice for merceneries to be called in to do some dirty work. Often they are paid by the government for specialized tasks, but they can be hired by anyone with enough money to do so. The Mercenaries' Guild is one of the most diverse of the Pillars. Its members come from all across the country from a variety of backgrounds. What do they have in common? They're willing to fight in order to earn their living. The only time the Mercenaries band together is for large, well-paying jobs and to nominate a royal. This is a democratic process in which each mercenary casts one vote but not for themselves. There have been times when the royal mercenary was nominated by only two votes. They are typically one of the least respected of the royals because they are seen as morally bankrupt and self-serving. The validity of this claim, however, varies greatly depending on who is actually chosen.
Prison of Sands (m) โ Perhaps the most surprising of all of the Pillars is the Prison of Sands. A criminal chosen to sit on a throne; it sounds like madness, and perhaps it is. That being said, prisoners are weirdly sacred in Ilenforey culture. Illi, one of the most beloved gods, is the god of crime. The myth goes that Illi is a poor man who must steal, trick, and ultimately kill in order to feed himself and his family. He is a champion of the poor and is even celebrated by the rich. He is said to represent independence, necessity, and sacrifice. This isn't to say that crime is encouraged. Prisoners in general are still treated poorly by most of the population, but the line is more blurred than in many other cultures. Anyway, this is where the Prison of the Sands comes it. The prison is in the Flatlands just south of the Floodplain by about thirty miles. It is a large, rectangular structure made of red clay that houses all of the most prolific criminals in the country. Some are awaiting trials, others are in line for execution. But, once every century, they are allowed to vote for one among them to become royalty. This has actually gone rather well historically, as the nominee must get a majority of votes in order to win. For this reason, the person who is selected is often misunderstood or justified in some way. But sometimes they nominate a horrible monster as an act of rebellion.
The Weavers (f, rigid) โ Textiles are the largest export in Ilenfore. Their beautiful rugs, tapestries, and clothing are shipped to the far reaches of the continent, known for their rich colors and soft touch. This industry is one of the great prides of Ilenfore. And, unlike many industries, it is very female dominant. Practically all young women in the country learn to weave on a loom from a young age. Many make clothing for their family and for themselves. Women who can weave well are praised as being virtuous. That being said, the demand is still high for products that are too fine to create without special training. Those items are created by professional weavers. The largest business is based in Cypra, where there is an enormous warehouse (the biggest building in the country, actually). The women who are hired to work there show incredible skill, and they are trained to hone their craft even more. The Weavers also represent a Pillar, given how much money their craft brings into the economy. Much like the Mercenaries' Guild, their nominee is selected by voting where the women can vote for anyone but themselves. Sometimes campaigns are run by the more privileged and wealthy among them, however, and it has long been accused of being a flawed process. Regardless, the person with the most votes is the one chosen for the royal circle. Much like the Silo, most of the Weavers are people with working class backgrounds. But before the turn of the century, an influx of wealthy young girls hoping to become royalty is inevitable.

As mentioned in the introduction, the country of Ilenfore has a unique form of government that's somewhere between an oligarchy and a republic. Every century, ten "royals" are nominated by each pillar to create the royal circle. The goal was to create a government that had the interests of all of its people in mind, no matter their economic status or creed. The ten royals, therefore, come from incredibly diverse backgrounds. Some were raised with a silver spoon in their mouths, others were born on farms. The only thing they have in common is that they were deemed the most worthy to rule by their pillar.
Once selected for leadership, the royal circle goes through a coronation that lasts several months. The first year of every century is the most celebrated and anticipated as it marks the beginning of a new era of leadership. Festivals are hosted around the country, and the royals go on a tour.
Adjusting to royal life is a shock to all members of the circle, no matter their history. They are catapulted into a level of fame and importance that few in the world share. Some are worshiped like gods by their people and some are immediately vilified for things that are beyond their control. The shock of this adjustment, thankfully, is shared among all of them, which is partially by design. It is meant to be a mechanism for bonding the royal circle together. This is imperative given the circle is asked to lead together, live together, and ultimately share each others' company for the remainder of their lives. Their bonds with their families will be limited to short, yearly visitations. They will no longer have time for friends outside the government, and they cannot marry outside of the circle itself. If the royals desire to have children and companionship, they must look within the circle for that to happen. For this reason, the first few years are sometimes jokingly called the "mating ritual" because they tend to pair off with the first person that strikes their fancy out of fear of ending up alone (that being said, infidelity is common in royal life and it is not unheard of for them to take on consorts). Some royal circles have been said to maintain polyamorous relationships among three or more of their members. As mentioned previously, polyamory is a celebrated form of love in Ilenforey culture as it is something that appears often in mythology.
Children produced by the royal circle are sent to live in the House of the Swans. They are not quite treated as princes and princesses, given they will rarely be given the chance to rule, but they are well taken care of.
You might be asking yourself who takes over ruling the country once all of the royal circle have died off. Afterall, the coronation is only something that happens every century, and people never live to be that old. The solution is an imperfect one, and it's part of the reason that Ilenfore is in constant political upheaval. Once the royals all die off, leadership is taken over by their former advisors and underlings. The common people have no oversight and they do not have a hand in the selection of these leaders. By law these advisors and underlings are not allowed to make drastic changes to the government before the next coronation, but one can see how this would be sidestepped by the self-motivated and ambitious.

This is where the fun begins! To join, you will create a member of the newest royal circle. In order to do that, pick a pillar that speaks to you and your character will be the chosen one from that institution. Again, feel free to add more to the lore about that pillar in order to flesh out your character if you so wish. You are also welcome to make side characters that can come from any background. All characters will be added below.
Cult of the Blue Moth (female, rigid)
โ VALAERIA NOVAK The Cult of the Blue Moth
Physical Description: Valaeria, age 25, is a carbon copy of all of the women on her mother's side of the family. She's taller than most, but not remarkably so, standing at approximately 5'7". Her build is naturally slim, though she puts on muscle rather easily and would not be blown over by a rogue gust of wind. Like her mother and her grandmother before her, she has jet black, glossy hair that falls to the middle of her back. The most unusual aspect of Valaeria's appearance is the streak of pale blonde on the left side of her head. It starts at about the middle of her head and ends just above her ear. Though it looks unnatural, she was actually born with a strange genetic mutation that causes one part of her hair to be blonde. The same is true even for her eyebrows and her eyelashes on the left side of her face. It gives her an asymmetry that some find off-putting. Her brows are narrow and naturally arched, and she has long eyelashes above probing brown/green eyes. As for her complexion, Valaeria is neither pale nor dark of skin. She puts on color quite easily when exposed to the sun, and at her healthiest has a bronze tan, though she is often paler in the winter. Another trait she inherited from her mother are her long-fingered hands and her cupid's bow lips. Her nose is on the longer side and has a slight bump along the ridge. As for clothing, Valaeria dislikes the way she looks in bright colors. Thankfully, the Cult solved that problem for her by making all its members wear gauzy white dresses, and she is happy to comply. She would not be caught dead in yellow or orange.
Personality: The women in Valaeria's family have a reputation for being controlling. Her mother, for example, makes all of the financial decisions for the family and is more likely to travel for business than her father. Valaeria inherited some of this. She is out-spoken and secure in her own opinions. She is completely unafraid of confrontation. In fact, some would say that she seeks The confidence that has been fostered in her can sometimes translate into arrogance. In fairness to her, however, she is a good person who tries her best to be fair. She hates the idea of manipulation, and though she can come on strong at times, it is with the intention of never misleading others. The only time when this is not true is in the realm of romance. When it comes to love, Valaeria has been called "aloof" or "standoffish" by some. She is never one to bat eyelashes or whisper sweet nothings, not unless she truly means them. Another trait of Valaeria's is that she is very family oriented. She loves her siblings, her parents, and her son so much that being parted from them can feel physically painful. At the same time, she is also ambitious, and she desires to accomplish things outside of just motherhood.
Background: Her family is based near Cypra in an estate closer to the mountains. She was born there along with her older sister, Kaskia, and her younger brother, Bruno. Wealth runs in her family, inherited several generations back from the quartz mine that remains in the family. Her father "manages" the mine, but it is her mother who has connections all across the country. Valeria's maternal grandmother is a priestess of the Blue Moth, and all of the women in the family have been deeply ingrained in the rituals there. Valeria first went to the sanctuary at the age of five. Anyway, her childhood was a privileged one. She grew up on her family's large estate, roaming the hills and learning the family business. The hardest time in her life was when she got unexpectedly pregnant at the age of seventeen. This was the result of a short affair with a boy she had known since childhood. They did not love each other, and she learned she was pregnant after he was deployed to serve in the army. Valaeria's father was incredibly angry, and she fled to live with her grandmother in the cult sanctuary. There she gave birth to a son named Keelo. He lives with her parents and she visits as frequently as she can despite her constant travel.

(Hey! So I actually just found your planning page today and was going to post until I noticed this thread so I figured I'd wait. Now that this is (half) open I was hoping I could claim a spot! Maybe the nominee from the University? Also if there's still world building/lore creation you want to do I'm totally in. I love that kind of thing.)

Awesome, thanks! And cool sounds good. I feel like it's hard to run out of things to work on for world building, haha. I'll get to working on my character(s), I'm definitely going to need the extra time before rping starts!
Edit: If I've got character questions do you want me to post them here or on the joining page?

We love a scandalous moment!
Alrighty, y'all! I meant to work on Lukja today but my dad and I watched movies until late and now I have to go to sleep. I'm heading out for my trip tomorrow morning and I will be totally offline until Monday or Tuesday (unless there is a random cell tower close to where we camp).
A message for new peeps if ya join while I'm gone: Feel free to claim a slot and fill out a form. It'll be an open buffet until I'm home again; I'll just check new characters upon my return, but I'm sure they'll be great.
