what would it be? Oddly enough, I would pick Spanish. I know it's considered one of the easier languages to learn at least as a native English speaker, but idk I just have a really hard time with it. I've been able to pick up German, Swedish, even a bit of Japanese relatively easily but for some reason Spanish gives me a headache. But the frustrating thing is it would be so useful and beneficial to know it- so many people in the U.S. speak it and it also opens up a lot of job opportunities. Maybe I just need to actually put in a bit more effort instead of just wishing for it to instantly be understood I guess a second choice would be Telugu, since it's currently the fastest growing foreign language in the U.S., so it would be more of an investment language. Regardless I hope to delve more into languages once I'm finished with school in a week. Then I'd have a whole lot more time on my hands.

Japanese because weeb language.
In all seriousness though, it's a hard choice between Chinese and Japanese. I might just choose Japanese over Chinese, just because Chinese is a heritage language and I might actually have a chance to become fluent. (I'm sort of studying it now.) Japanese is harder, so I'd save more effort if I could magically pick it up.

Mandarin
one might expect me to choose Japanese since I'm currently learning it now, but I enjoy the steps of learning it piece by piece, I have friends in the classes, and I'm getting my minor in it.
but knowing Mandarin automatically would be amazing since my boyfriend is Chinese and lives in a predominantly Mandarin-speaking part of China. his parents and older family don't speak English, so it would just be really cool to talk to them someday in their language.

My sister lives in Japan so Japanese.
I know very rudimentary Spanish right now, though. I was told that a whole year of college Spanish would be enough for me to be conversational (not fluent but standard) in it, but 3 quarters later and I can't say a sentence without taking two minutes to write it down first.

Any language with a trilled r tbh. Whenever I try to practice it my dog looks at me like I'm some sort of freak lol. Right now I'm studying Welsh so it'd be nice to know how to pronounce the r's correctly. So I'd either pick Welsh or Spanish since I'm already learning Welsh

Mandarin Chinese, just because it’s such a difficult language to learn since it has so many different characters.

Mandarin, since I'm already learning and have been for the past eight years. I also have Chinese relatives and I'd like to speak with them more easily.
But I'd love to learn German and Russian if I ever could.

As far as practicality goes, I’d pick Spanish.
But the thing is, I could always learn Spanish or French or German if I put in the time and effort - I could visit the country, take a few years of language classes, or even use duolingo.
But if I could pick one language to automatically be completely fluent in? Sanskrit or Coptic. Maybe Anglo Saxon or Old Norse just to be nerdy. I’d choose a dead language bc there’s no other way I could learn it. I could help scholars translate ancient inscriptions or even resurrect a dead language and help teach it to others. I think that’d be pretty rad

I know with some of these old languages you can only hypothesize what they sound like really, it would be super cool to know exactly what all those ancient languages sounded like/are related to. It could resolve a lot of unanswered questions.

French. I can write and read it, but my pronunciation sucks and I'm too afraid to say anything simple in French. It would be super helpful with my family.

Probably try something outside of my range of languages (know one germanic, one slavic, and one romance language). Most likely Irish, Hebrew, or Maori? Greek is also kinda interesting.
I know Spanish/Chinese/Japanese/Russian/Arabic/German are probably better choices since they're global languages rn but for me learning a language is more about its linguistic properties than its usefulness lol

Probably Latin, since honestly that’s the only language I even cared about enough to learn. I know a thousand or so words in Latin, and some of the grammar and stuff, but it wouldn’t hurt to just be perfectly fluent.

Definitely Japanese. German and Spanish are both languages I’d rather be able to know, (esp since the area were I live in is very rich in Mexican culture and Spanish is the only language most of my neighbors speak,) but they are both MUCH easier to learn then Japanese.

Proto-Indo-European, because i'd be able to finish my undergrad degree and then go to grad school for linguistics and find a way to use my fluency in PIE to further our collective knowledge of it (because, like, i obviously could not just call up some linguists like "hi i speak PIE fluently")
... either that or korean bc kpop

German so I can just take a test and get my residence permit easier. Of course, if I already had proper courses for German, then Mandarin, Japanese, or Korean.

Gosh that’s a hard choice...
French would be nice because I’ve got very deep French roots But German sounds like it would be fun to scream in Although Spanish probably has more applications in employment But Japanese would allow me to talk to higher ups in Nintendo and just sound more menacing when threatening people lol
