Daya ββ Daya sat wearily on her bedside, awaiting a small crescent of yellow to appear over the horizon. Streaks of pink and orange dotted the sky beyond the dusty pane of her window. She enjoyed being awake at this time, though the dark circles underneath her eyes stated otherwise. The nightmare had jolted her awake about an hour prior, as they tend to do. While she sat alone in thought, her mind wandered to the new recruits, Rhys and Lucan. How were they going to handle the Joining? She had not known their stakes in wanting to become Wardens; how much they were willing to sacrifice. Perhaps she could ask them on the mission, she thought. Getting to know the people under her care was important to her, even if they may perish unceremoniously. It unfortunately came with the job. She was the last to drink from the goblet during her Joining. One by one, as her comrades consumed the blood, they were wracked with unnatural spasms. Unholy noises escaped their aching throats as their eyes rolled back into their skulls. They collapsed onto the dirt in a most unusual fashion, as if they were discarded toys. Limbs bent into each other as their bodies let out one final croak. But each member continued to drink their fill - for death on their own accord was better than perishing in eternal bondage. Those words echoed in Daya's mind as she lifted the goblet to her lips. The bodies of her family that surrounded her, they had died for this cause. They wanted to help people, and so did she. If I die, I join my brethren - but if I live, I will fight for them. Before she became a Grey Warden, Daya thought she had lived enough nightmares to last a lifetime. But the terrors that plagues her dreams after she became one of them were previously thought unimaginable. One that she had most often (including that night) was that same image of all of those individuals, those she had known as brothers and sisters, collapsed around her. Their bodies, once full of laughter and life, were drained of everything. Left nothing but skin and bones. Suddenly, creeping shadowy hands and other appendages would tear out of the bodies, and eventually their full forms would be exposed. Darkspawn. They had just finished feeding on her family, and now set their sights on her. What started as a few monsters soon became a whelming wave of them, descending on the qunari with bared claws and teeth. This particular nightmare, however, ended a bit differently than usual. The last thing Daya could see before her vision was obscured by writhing, bloodied darkspawn flesh was the moon - full and red. But something had just eclipsed it, a silhouette of wings, watching her from afar. Then her eyes would cloud over, and she would awaken with a start. The word everyone feared - even outside of the Wardens - was "Blight", and for a damned good reason. So as she sat in silence, watching the sun rise on a soon-to-be busy Kirkwall, she acknowledged what that nightmare had meant. But for now, she had to gear up and train some bright-eyed recruits. Oh, what they were getting themselves into... She commenced her routine as usual, putting on her enormous plate armor and holstering her trusty club and morning star on her belt. Her footfalls no doubt would wake up the other sleeping guests, so when exiting her room she attempted to be as courteous as possible. Daya met with the bar and innkeeper, who forwarded Corryn's update. Maybe it was the aura she gave off, but Daya had expected her to be the very punctual type. Not wanting to keep her waiting any longer, the warrior thanked the innkeeper and went on her way.
... After a couple days of travel, the group had finally found themselves outside of the infamous Deep Roads. Daya recalled her first time being ordered to scout them out, and feeling a great sense of dΓ©jΓ vu. It was not rare that during her time of indentured servitude that she would have to work in the mines. Sometimes she would find herself among dwarven slaves, who would give her advice on how to identify various metals and lyrium of quality. Her biggest takeaway of them all was imparted on her by an older dwarf. He had been trapped in the system for several years it seemed - the scars on his exposed back and arms spoke louder than the man himself. Stay away from red lyrium. Do not touch it or remain near it, whatever you do. As she, the other Wardens, and recruits stopped to make an encampment in the caverns, she wondered if they would come across some on their journey. Judging by the looks of the closed off entrance, it had been a while since anyone had ventured to this location. Can't be too careful, Daya gulped. Just nearby the entrance, herself, Rhys, and Gemma began to set up camp.
It became a routine for Corryn and Lucan to be chattering away while they had made their trek. A few conversations had even made her laugh aloud. The sheer cluelessness of the human boy amused her to no end, though she did feel for him at the root of it all. It was clear that he not known much hardship, but he was going to learn very soon. She only hoped that it would not affect him too harshly in the long run. But in these last fleeting moments before they were due to fight the darkspawn, she relished in his charming, yet oblivious statements as she set up the bonfire.
Rhys ββ "It's dark in here!" Exclaimed Lucan, as the group entered the dank cave. Corryn had blasted the heaps of rock and wood inside the entrance, to which they clattered across the stone floor. This impressed Rhys, and he instinctively peered down at the daggers on his belt. Not much use I could've been for clearing that rubble.
"The underground being dark? What a concept!" Rhys sarcastically snapped back, but with a much quieter voice than what Lucan had projected. Even so, both his and Lucan's voices echoed across the damp cavernous walls.
"You don't have to yell." Corryn shushed the two of them and continued on, then warned the recruits to prepare themselves. This was ultimately a test for the both of them, after all. The rest of the Wardens were just watchers, downing the occasional darkspawn if things get too hectic. While the thought of being overtaken by a swarm of hellish creatures was quite terrifying to him, deep down there was a tinge of excitement. It was a similar feeling he had to killing big game - whether it be bears, or the rare hyena (if the Clan decided to venture out west). Rhys unsheathed two daggers that rested across from each other on his waist. Each were dipped in a viscous, green liquid. If this concoction were to down a raging grizzly, surely it wouldn't take much more for a darkspawn, he thought. Suddenly, the group halted in place when they heard a faint voice coming from further in the tunnel. The sound bounced furiously across the rocky walls, and transformed itself into a shriek of frenzied laughter. A moment of eerie silence followed, then a chorus of raucous hissing and rabid growling of unknown creatures filled the space around them. Rhys' eyes darted around the area, searching for a glimpse of movement amongst the dimly lit ceiling. His training was coming back to him in waves of adrenaline; he grasped the daggers tighter. As he craned his neck upwards, his gaze was finally met by a pair of gleaming red eyes. The light from the flame Corryn had produced barely touched this creature, but as Rhys' eyes adjusted, the figure leaped downwards onto him. Rhys let out a sound that he hadn't thought could come out of his mouth. It was akin to the howl of an animal that knew it was about to die. It rumbled inside his throat and escaped into the cavern, echoing alongside the darkspawn's ghoulish noises. The sounds only heightened as the creature nearly tackled Rhys to the ground and held him in a grapple. The elf grunted, trying his hardest to jostle one of his arms free. The darkspawn's hand mistakenly let go for a split second, and with the now-liberated hand he plunged the poison-dipped dagger into the small of its back. With a monstrous shriek, the darkspawn reeled backwards and let go of the rogue. Rhys then corrected himself and lunged at it with his other dagger, clasping his free hand on one of its arms and thrusting the blade deep into its chest. Another weak sound emerged from the darkspawn as the air in its lungs emptied. As it collapsed onto the ground, Rhys hurriedly snatched both daggers from the corpse and spun around, looking for more prey. The next prey in question would take the form of a genlock archer, that had its arrow knocked and pointed straight at the rogue. Rhys had noticed a few seconds too late, and the arrow let loose and lodged itself just above his waist. He let out a yelp in pain, but the adrenaline coursing through his body quickly lessened the feeling of the blow as he dashed forward. The genlock didn't have much time to react; it hurriedly fumbled with its quiver and drew another arrow, but it was too late. A dagger impaled the monster's neck, and a dark red liquid sprayed from the wound onto Rhys' arm.
