โซ โซ THE SUNDERMOUNT, KIRKWALL โซ โซ
Lucan Hawke
To say that Lucan felt awful would be quite the understatement. Every inch of his body was sore and ached something fierce; his muscles quivered, giving his body a slight, noticeable shake to it as he began to come down off his adrenaline high. The young manโs hand was clasped tightly around the handle of his bow as he stared into the darkness where the darkspawn had vanished. Silence had fallen in the tunnels; he could hear no more chittering, no more hissing and sadistic laughing. Lucan wasnโt sure if the silence was better, though; dark things lurked in the silence, and he didnโt trust that something wasnโt going to try to eat him the instant he let his guard down.
Once Corryn returned, looking like sheโd gone through the ringer, he began to relax a bit. His shoulders dropped a bit, though he maintained his white-knuckled grip on his bow for several moments longer. Daya holstered her Morningstar; the spiked flail was covered in darkspawn blood and gore. She took a moment to look around before she sort of snapped back into the motherly role sheโd taken over the past few days. She moved to Lucan, placing something in his free hand. Lucan looked down to see a vial filled with a deep red liquid. Daya called it a healing potion, but its color was far too close to the blood decorating the various Warden, recruits, and the environment. He nodded his thanks, but the moment her back was turned as she went to assist Rhys, he slipped the potion into one of the pouches at his waist. No way he was going to be imbibing anything like that right now.
He blinked, and Corryn had moved to confront the newcomer. Almost reflexively he intervened, letting one of his witty comments break a bit of the tension. Corryn just glared at him, but didnโt say anything else. When they began discussing Dalish clans, Lucan tuned out, and turned to watch as Daya treated Rhysโ case of arrow-in-the-abdomen. The large qunari moved with a delicate touch as she went about cleaning the wound and removing the arrow. Corryn glanced over a few times, watching Dayaโs progress, but most of her attention was focused on the new elf, who was apparently named Erin and hailed from the Lavellan clan. Lucan raised an eyebrow at that; heโd heard of the Lavellan clan, since they wandered the Free Marches mostly, but heโd never met any of them. That wasnโt unusual, though; Dalish rarely interacted with outsiders or even city elves.
Finally, Corryn called him back to attention, and he turned to settle his blue gaze on her. โEach of you,โ she said, handing Lucan, Rhys and Erin a glass vial, โtake one of these vials and fill it with blood from one of these darkspawn. Be swift about it, too. The sooner thatโs done, the sooner we can leave these damn deep roads.โ Lucan thought that sounded just fine, and set about to follow orders. It didnโt take long to fill the small vial, and he shuddered at how dark the monsterโs blood was. Once he was finished, he pocketed the glass container, and turned back to Corryn. Once everyone else was done Corryn gave everyone a nod, and turned to lead the way out of the deep roads.
The journey back was as silent as the journey in, with everyone lost in their own thoughts. Lucanโs blue gaze was unfocused, with his attention turned inward. Heโd been told how terrible the darkspawn were, but it was an entirely different experience actually encountering them. They wereโฆ well, horrifying didnโt seem to be a sufficient enough word. Was there even a term that could accurately describe them? He certainly didnโt know any, and as they walked along, he was seriously considering whether or not joining the Wardens was the right path. He hadnโt made the choice for himself; his brother had more or less ordered him to join the Wardens, as was tradition in their family. At least one member of the Hawkes had joined the wardens since Carver had been conscripted. Surely the Wardens wouldnโt hold him to some oath he hadnโt made?
Then againโฆ the Grey Wardens werenโt known for being forgiving, and very few were let in on even the smallest secret of the order unless they were going to join. Considering that Corryn had told them at least one requirement of the Joining, he was probably stuck. A bitter taste rose in his mouth, but he pushed it away. There was nothing to do for it now; he could only move forward, and make the best of what he had.
And he would; heโd make his brother regret giving him up to the Wardens. Heโd make his father swallow those hurtful words heโd spat over the years.
Finally, they exited the deep roads, and Lucan took a deep breath of the fresh air. He flexed the fingers on his right hand, trying to chase away the cramp that had settled in. Corryn managed to close the entrance to the deep roads, collapsing some more rocks on it, but she looked exhausted, and Lucan couldnโt blame her. โWeโll camp here for the night,โ Corryn told them. Lucan internally winced at that. The last place he wanted to sleep was somewhere this close to the deep roads, but it wasnโt his call to make.
So he set about helping make camp, starting the fire. Once everything had been prepared, he sat down upon his bed roll, placed his bow next to him, and prepared to take the first watch.
A few days later
Lucan wheezed as he ascended the last few steps towards his destination. Of course, Corryn had made the climb easily. She was stood at the top of the rocky hill, peering at the mountain range that stretched before them. The Vimmark mountains extended far beyond Kirkwall, but the mountain peak that was just outside the city-state held a special significance, especially for the Dalish clans that wandered the area. In the ages past, the elves had spent much time at the summit of the Sundermount, and the reverence with which Corryn studied the mountains told Lucan that the elves of this age still believed the mountain to be sacred. It didnโt surprise him that the Wardens wanted to hold the Joining here.
Corryn turned to watch the rest of the group crest the hill, before she began walking again. She remained silent until they reached their finally destination. โThe Sundermount,โ she told the rest of the group. โVarryn should be here already.โ
Lucan let his gaze drift across the landscape, searching for any sort of sign that Varryn was there. A sudden sound broke the silence โ the shrill cry of an eagle that echoed across the mountain rage, originating somewhere to the east. Instinctively, Lucan spun โ as did the rest of the group โ towards the sound.
And then he saw them, and his breath rushed from his lungs.
The Grey Wardens were known for several things, the chief of those being their dedication to battling darkspawnโฆ and griffons.
Lucan was staring at the latter, and he could barely believe his eyes.
There were four of them, gliding on the breeze that swept up from the mountains. Their wings were spread wide, casting a magnificent shadow on the ground below. Their front half was that of a feathered reptile, with an eagleโs beak wickedly curving from their faces. A pair of long, delicately feathered ears swept out from the back of their skulls, and each of the toes on their front feet was decorated with a talon that was razor-sharp.
Feathers ran along their form until just behind their wings, where the feathers faded away and the fur of a great cat took its place. Behind them streamed a leonine tail, also decorated with long feathers. They were โ in a word โ breath-taking. Lucan couldnโt even form the proper through necessary to accurately describe them.
โBeautiful, arenโt they?โ came a masculine voice, from somewhere behind them. Lucan didnโt tear his gaze away, but nodded in agreement.
โVarryn,โ Corryn greeted. There was a breathless quality to her tone; clearly, sheโd been surprised by the griffons as well. โHowโฆ whatโฆโ
โThey were sent down from Weisshaupt,โ Varryn told her, answering the question sheโd been unable to voice. When Lucan turned to face him, there was a wry quality to his expression, but a weariness lurked at the edges. โThey refused to bond with any of those at Weisshaupt, and the First Warden was hoping theyโd find someone amongst whatever new recruits we found. Never mind how rare that it,โ he added at the end, clearly to himself.
There was another cry from the griffons, and Lucan turned again to watch as they four rapidly approaching, before landing. They were small, as far as griffons went โ clearly still young. From what Lucan had read, griffons could grow to reach twelve feet from beak to tail-tip, and males could reach nearly a thousand pounds. The creatures were quite tall, such that they stood quite a bit higher than Varryn, who had to be topping six feet. One of the griffons flared its wings and moved closer, bobbing its head up and down. Its yellow-gold eyes bored into Lucan with an intensity heโd never experienced. Somehow, instinctively, Lucan knew this creature was female, and she was breathtaking. Her feathers were a soft ashen grey, edged in a dark, deep russet. Her fur was also a grey color, although it was deeper than her feathers. The long decorative adornments at the base of her tail were colored with a brilliant russet, silver and gold patterning. She let out a chirping sound, moving even closer to Lucan until she was close enough to touch. He held his breath as she leaned her head forward and rested her beak against his chest. With a shaky hand, he reached up to run his fingers through the soft downy feathers around her eyes. She closed them, and began to purr.
โWell,โ Varryn said, โthat was rather fast.โ

ยป Erin Lavellan ยซ the Sundermount
The white-blonde elf took Erin's hand in a firm grip and shook it once. "Lavellan," Corryn echoed thoughtfully, then snapped her fingers as recognition lit her eyes. "Yes, Iโve met members of your clan before. In the last gathering, actually, but I do not recall seeing you." She nodded to herself.
"No, I suppose you wouldn't have," Erin replied evenly. She had always enjoyed the gatherings; she loved meeting the hunters of other clans, competing in archery contests during the day, and exchanging tall tales about their adventures that grew increasingly far-fetched as the night wore on. She'd never been too curious about what the Keepers and Firsts were up to. She much preferred sitting around the fire and laughing with friends to huddling off in a corner of the camp and whispering about magic and who knows what else.
Corryn frowned in confusion. She seemed surprised to hear that Varryn -- right, that was his name -- was in Kirkwall. Evidently, she decided it wasn't worth mentioning. With a sigh, she addressed the group at large. "Each of you," she ordered, pointing to the recruits in turn, "take one of these vials and fill it with blood from one of these darkspawn." She reached into one of her packs and began handing out empty vials.
Erin took hers reluctantly and glanced over her shoulder at one of the shadowy corpses that slumped against the wall. She grimaced, but didn't protest.
She returned a few minutes later, her fingers stained with dark liquid. She exchanged a glance with Rhys and Lucan, but nobody said anything. It seemed that they were all too winded from their chance encounter with the darkspawn. Corryn, who had been leaning against her staff, motioned for them to follow her. "Let's get out of here."
"Don't have to tell me twice," Erin muttered, putting the vial away and setting off up the tunnel after the other elf.
They walked in uncomfortable silence for several hours. Well, it was uncomfortable for her, at least. Erin didn't like to dwell in her own thoughts for long. But she got the distinct feeling that nobody else felt like talking, so she kept her mouth shut until they reached the surface. She inhaled deeply and gratefully as they emerged into the cool evening air. Corryn decided to make camp, and the others quickly fell into setting up for the night. Lucan sat off to one side to take the first watch, and no one argued; the rest them were asleep with moments of their heads hitting the pillow.
. . . "Wow," Erin said wonderingly as they ascended the craggy hillside. "Look at this!" she called over her shoulder to Lucan, who was the closest in proximity to her at present. "Isn't it amazing?" She paused for a moment, shading her eyes against the morning sunlight. The view was stunning: to one side, the Vinmarks towered over them, tall and imposing even at a distance, and far below them, she thought she could make out the turrets of Kirkwall. Somewhere down there, hundreds of people were bustling along the city-state's streets, preparing for a new day.
Erin hurried the rest of the way to the top where Corryn was waiting. What she saw next stopped her in her tracks.
A harsh cry echoed overhead. The recruits craned their necks backward to gaze up at the sky. Griffons! Erin nearly gasped. She'd only heard stories about the majestic winged creatures who possessed a lion's body and an eagle's head. They were even more incredible than what she'd imagined, intimidating and beautiful at once. And there were four of them! How could there be so many in one place?
"That's--" she started to say, panting lightly. "Those are--"
"Beautiful, arenโt they?" a gruff voice remarked from behind them.
"Varryn," Corryn said breathlessly. Erin followed her gaze to the man she'd met a few days earlier, and she nodded respectfully to him. A few steps away from her, Corryn gestured wordlessly to the griffons soaring towards them. "How... what..."
Erin looked over at Rhys and Lucan and was relieved to see they were just as shocked as she was. Over the past few days as they journeyed to the Sundermount, she'd found herself gravitating toward the other recruits. They were around the same age as her and also inexperienced with this whole Warden business, so they had that in common. She subconsciously edged towards them as Varryn explained why the griffons were here. Even Corryn looked surprised.
With another screech, the animals gracefully thumped down in front of them, ruffling their wings and blinking curiously at the various humans, elves, and qunari. They seemed young and were a bit restless in the presence of so many strangers, but Erin kept them at a respectful distance nonetheless. Even the smallest of the griffons was taller than Varryn, and at least two heads taller than herself.
Erin watched, transfixed, as one of the griffons slowly made her way over to Lucan. She paused before him, studying him closely. The recruit swallowed nervously, raising one hand. The griffon chirped softly at him, then nuzzled her head into his palm. Lucan's eyes widened in delighted awe as he ran his fingers through the downy feathers around her eyes.
"Well. That was rather fast," Varryn commented.
"That was amazing," Erin agreed. "I think she chose you, Luc." The redheaded elf glanced hopefully at the other griffons. "So, are they, like, part of the Warden starter pack or something?" She was joking, but honestly hadn't realized the Wardens would be getting their own companions -- at least, not so soon. They hadn't even completed the Joining yet. Her fingers brushed the top of the vial of darkspawn blood hanging at her side.
