Gemma Wilde
Gemma was not paying attention to the rest of the table. As the recruits were brought up to speed, her narrowed green eyes followed the dwarf back to his table. Some of his companions gestured wildly, clearly perplexed that their friend had seemingly blown his advances. Does he really have lyrium? she wondered. He could be trying to trick me. Afterall, I thought dwarves could hear lyrium, not smell it. But then how did he know I was a templar? She mulled over her options silently, looking distant. Perhaps he would still be around when the Grey Wardens retreated to their rooms. She could have the barmaid bring him a message. I am running low. Please, tell me where I can get my hands on some more. The practical part of her urged her to exercise restraint. Then again, it would be so easy to simply stand up and walk over to the table of cackling men and--
Her attention snapped over to the other side of her own table which had erupted into abrupt chaos. Gemma was slow to realize what was happening. Her gaze jumped from Daya to Lucan to Rhys, all of whom were tensed in shock, then finally on Corryn who was swinging a weapon at the head of a cowering man. The female elf whaled on the man a few times with the staff, which collided with his flesh in sharp precision. Before there was time to understand the situation, let alone react, the man was unconscious on the floor and Corryn was slipping nonchalantly back into her seat.
She handled that much differently than I would have, thought Gemma. I would have allowed him to land whatever crude remarks he wanted, then killed him more privately. Thereโs no knowing if he has a posse of thuggish friends. But these were the thoughts of a former assassin and a woman who often travelled alone. Though she did not communicate this to Corryn, she was impressed by her courage to deal with a threat so publicly. Curse the consequences.
โI think Iโm in love,โ gushed Lucan.
Corryn changed the subject without missing a beat. โWeโll leave at first light, if that works for you three.โ Daya consented agreeably then moved to haul the unconscious offender. out of the tavern
โIs there anything else we need to do to prepare for this?โ Rhysโ voice piped up over the noise of the tavern. Gemmaโs attention flicked from Dayaโs disappearing large form to the male elf. Another spark of wickedness blinked in her like an ember. Her withdrawal was getting the better of her. It made her feel feral, like an animal waiting for any excuse to lash out. Besides, she was rapidly growing tired of these optimistic recruits. She wished to tell them that their bright-eyed anticipation would be better channeled into running far away from here. The life of a Grey Warden is not something you can prepare for. Either you perish in battle or the taint slowly takes hold and you die ten years from now. There is no third option, except for the merciful tranquility of death upon first sipping the blood of the darkspawn.
But she did not say this to Rhys. Instead, she drank from her ale and then cradled it as delicately as a wine glass.
โYou can pray for your soul, elf. And sharpen your blade. The rest is up to fate,โ she purred.

โซ โซ KIRKWALL, FREE MARCHES โซ โซ
Corryn Sabrae
Once the decision on when to leave was settled, the conversation at the Grey Wardensโ table became a bit lighter. Lucan spent the rest of the time there trying to convince Corryn to tell him about her life, but he was ultimately unsuccessful. Any answer she gave him was as elusive as the last. โSo, where are you from?โ heโd ask. โThe woods,โ sheโd respond. Heโd press for answers, and sheโd easily dodge them. The rest of the night continued like that, until Corryn finally announced that she was retiring to the room sheโd reserved in the Hanged Man. With that, she left the table and the other Wardens, along with the recruits, to their own devices.
Once she was finally alone, Corryn allowed herself to relax. She exhaled, running a hand through the silvery locks that hung in front of her gaze. With a wave of her hand, she reached across the veil and tapped into her magic. She bent reality about her, and with another flick of her wrist she lit the small fireplace in the room and moved towards the bed, curling her lip as she peered at the old blanket. She couldnโt imagine that the bed was particularly clean, but sheโd slept in worse places. Besides โ magic had the knack of giving her the ability to cure nearly any disease or illness that struck her, so she wasnโt terrible worried. Almost robotically, she leaned her staff up against the wall nearest the bed so she could grab it in case of emergency, and then went about removing her boots, gloves, and other various armors that she wasnโt interested in spending the night in. Finally, she laid down in the bed, covered herself with the blanket, and closed her eyes. After a moment or two she finally drifted away, although her dreams were anything but pleasant.
The nightmares came with being a Warden โ it was part of the price one had to pay to do battle against the darkspawn horde. Older Wardens claimed to be able to block out the nightmares, but Corryn was having little luck in doing so. Each night they plagued her, and this night was no different.
They often started out the same way โ sheโd find herself standing somewhere sheโd never been, but that she could recognize as the deep roads. Before her stretched an endless tunnel, filled with an eerie blackness that seemed to hunger for something. From the depths of the darkness came whispers, both indistinct and decipherable at the same time. The words didnโt make any sense, and yet they did โ they spoke to something within her, something coursing in her blood. It sang to her, urged her to walk forward, to enter the darkness โ to join them. To become one with them. The voices would be joined with the sound of darkspawn rushing up the tunnel โ their chattering, hissing, growling; noises that chilled her blood. Before they could reach her, sheโd wake up.
Tonightโs dream was far different. The setting was the same; she found herself in the deep roads, overlooking a great bridge that stretched across a chasm that seemed to have no bottom. On the other side of the bridge was the dark tunnel, but something was different. The voices were louder โ more insistent, more violent, far stronger. There was something else lurking in that darkness โ eyes as bright as flame, but as red as blood. There was a bellow from the depths, a great war-cry that rose to reach even Corryn, as high up as she stood. Another roar shook the very ground, rocketing out of the chasm โ and something followed it. For a moment, all Corryn saw was a great shadow, borne aloft by two great wings.
And then she saw it, and her very soul quaked in fear.
With its wings spread wide, borne aloft by a wind of evil, the archdemon surveyed its horde as the darkspawn marched below. It turned its great head, and its gaze fell upon Corryn.
The elf jerked awake with a gasp, blindly reaching for the staff she kept at the bedside. When her hand closed around it she swung it in a wide arc, as if trying to chase away whatever enemy lurked nearby. But she couldnโt โ there was nothing there. As Corryn sat there, breathing deeply, working to calm her racing heart, she was left with the sensation of the archdemonโs eyes boring through her. She scrubbed at her face, gut tight with despair. So Varryn had been right โ it really was a Blight. Sheโd never really believed him, despite his warnings. The archdemon had never plagued her dreams before, she sheโd assumed that heโd been at the beginning of his Calling, something all Wardens faced when the darkspawn taint in their blood became too powerful.
But no. Heโd been right. He was always right.
Corryn ground her teeth for several moments before she stood. She went about gathering her things, and redonning her armor. She wasnโt getting any more sleep tonight โ it was best to get a head start on the day. She flicked her wrist and extinguished the flame in the fireplace. She picked up her staff and left the little room sheโd rented, and returned to the main area of the Hanged Man. There were still quite a few patrons, although most were either passed out or were close to it. She moved to the bartender, who inclined his head in greeting.
โI am leaving,โ she told him. โKeep the money for the next three nights, and when my companions awaken and come back down here, tell them to meet me outside the city walls, near Sundermount.โ He gave her a nod, and she left the Hanged Man, taking a deep breath of the clean air. It was still dark, but the sky was beginning to lighten. She turned in the direction of her destination, and set off.
Two Days Later
Corryn peered at the scene before her. The deep roads โ a Grey Wardenโs destiny, some might say. Itโs where the Grey Wardens beganโฆ and where they went to die, assuming that battle or the darkspawn or the archdemon didnโt kill them. This particular entrance wasnโt all that intimidating, but Corryn could sense the evil that lurked within. Whoever had come before them โ the Champion? โ had this entrance walled off with planks and stones and warding magic, but it wasnโt enough to stop Corryn. They had business to attend to, and she didnโt feel like marching another three days to find the next entrance that was on their map. It had already taken two days by foot to reach this one, and if the archdemon was really out there, building its strength, then time wasnโt something they had a lot of.
โThis is it,โ Corryn told her companions.
โThis?โ Lucan asked, giving her a weird look. โThis entrance is no good. Itโs blocked off with not just stones and wood, but warding magic. How are we supposed to get through?โ
Corryn snorted. โYou know little of magic, boy. Daya, Gemma, set camp here. Iโll need a few hours to prepare, and then weโll get started.โ
Somehow, Corryn had become the default leader of their little group, despite the fact that she was perhaps the most Junior Warden. Lucan stepped back, watching as the mage went about her task. He went to assist Daya, Gemma and Rhys as they set camp, pitching tents and starting a fire. Still, she could sense him watching her, though she ignored him, focused on her task. The magic was old, and strong, laid deep in the foundations of the stone itself, but Corryn could see the places where it had begun to fray and weaken. She reached across the Veil again, calling upon her innate magic, and set to work. To an outsider, it probably looked strange. She sat before the deep roads entrance, legs crossed, hands outstretched before her. She made snipping motions with her head, as if she were unraveling a series of knots, tugging and pulling the threads apart. In reality, it wasnโt all that different: she was unraveling the magic of the wards, and that involved following them to their beginning. After what seemed like quite a long time, she finally did โ and frowned. The wards had been laid by normal means but had then strengthened by blood magic. She curled her lip. Thankfully, it wouldnโt require her to resort to blood magic to break them. With a final snip, the wards unraveled and vanished, melt away.
She stood, brushing off dust from her legs. โAre you two prepared for the journey?โ she asked, turning to Lucan and Rhys. โIf you are prepared, then let us begin. You will lead the way into the deep roads until you find darkspawn. You will then slay the darkspawn and each fill a vial of its blood. Daya, Gemma and I will be there to make sure this goes as smoothly as possible. We will assist in battle, if necessary, but do not expect us to make this easy. Our job is to see you through this, but this is your test.โ
โSo, weโre going into the dark, scary tunnels full of who knows what to find a darkspawn, kill it and then steal its blood. After that weโll do who knows what with it.โ Lucan's tone was wry.
โYes.โ
โGreat!โ Lucan clapped his hands together. โLetโs get this show started, shall we?โ
Corryn rolled her eyes. โStand back for a moment unless you want to end your journey covered in rubble.โ She picked up her staff again, gave it a dramatic twirl, and then pointed it at the entrance of the deep roads. With a deep breath, she reached for magic again and warped reality. Magic burst forth with a great concussive blast, slamming into the stone and wood. There was a groaning and screeching, and then entrance blasted open; stone and wood and fragments went flying, ricocheting deeper into the tunnel. Once the dust and clatter had died down, Corryn stepped back, resting the end of her staff on the ground. She turned back to her companions and held out a hand. โShall we?โ
โRemind me not to piss you off,โ Lucan told her.
โI donโt need magic to best you,โ she told him with an eye-roll. Lucan flashed her a grin, and then stepped over the threshold, walking into the deep roads. The rest of the party trailed after them. โItโs dark in here!โ Lucan yelled.
Corryn winced. โYou donโt have to yell,โ she snapped. She tapped her staff on the ground, and the top of it lit with a bright flame, casting a glow around them. โNow be quiet. Too much noise will attract the darkspawn.โ โIsnโt that the point?โ
โThe point is to keep walking, and find the darkspawn, not attract them,โ Corryn snapped.
Lucan shrugged and began walking again. Corryn followed after, and lapsed into silence again. They continued walking for several hours until Corryn stopped. She lifted a hand and glanced at Daya and Gemma. Part of being a Warden was the ability to sense darkspawn, and vice versa. There was something crawling across her awareness, somewhere off to the right. โPrepare yourselves,โ she warned the recruits. A heartbeat later, the sounds of darkspawn reached them. Demonic laughter echoed in the tunnels, followed by the growling and hissing of hurlocks. Corryn lifted her staff and readied herself for battle.
