Prologue
Stars glitter across the dark sky, providing ample light for the dark tabby as he slid through the undergrowth of the forest. Amber eyes scanned the territory as his paws carried him to oddly shaped cliffs. They were jagged and rocky; the tom could hear a few rocks falling in the distance of the cliffs. Snow gently littered the tops of the cliffs, though it took the dark tabby to realize it was leaf-bare.
The canyons. There was a strange sense of understanding that these cliffs have claimed lives. A sadness filled his chest as he could see images of cats he mightβve known flash through his memories.
Who were these cats? He couldnβt put his paw on who they were.
Before he knew it, his paws carried him elsewhere. He looked down at a gaping hole in the earth, big enough for a cat his size to crawl into. A pleasant feeling tugged at his heart, coaxing him into entering the tunnel.
Once in the tunnel, the long-furred tom found nothing interesting. The small cavern inside the earth could fit only two full grown cats. The scents were musky, showing that the snow had melted into the soil in the walls of the cavern. Wondering what why this little place had been interesting to him, he backed out of the den.
An image flashed in his mind, showing a white she-cat laying in a nest of feathers and soft moss. She was heavily pregnant. Then, the tom saw himself entering the den, a couple of mice in his jaws.
It was a touching scene, but he didnβt know who this she-cat was. He could feel the love blossom in his chest, but he was unsure of this strange memory. Did this really happen? Did he really have this she-cat as a mate? However, he felt heartache as he turned away to let his paws lead him elsewhere.
The tabbyβs eyes moved the parting trees, though he continued to glance at the trees and the opening that he was moving towards.
A little ways away was where the mountainous terrain parted, creating a path towards a gorse tunnel where the tabby crawled through. His eyes widened when he came into a camp. His gaze scanned the jagged walls that surrounded the camp. He could see the holes in the walls that made dens for the residents that could live there. In the center of the camp, he spotted a large rock. He immediately recognized it as the highrock.
The highrock? It was strange that he knew what the rock was.
Though a feeling of pride rose in his chest.
As he stopped at the highrock, the tabby tom noticed a faint light. He blinked and turned his head to look.
There was a glowing white cat, sitting in near one of the dens. She was strikingly beautiful, with white glossy fur and stars in her eyes. His heart pounded as he recognized her from the flashes of his own memories.
Slowly, he crept towards her, his eyes wide and his fur feeling hot. He could feel the love for this cat deep within him as he moved to her side. She then turned her head towards him, her green eyes glittering.
"Don't you recognize this?" She questioned, her voice laced with a loving tone.
For a moment, it took him by surprise. Though the longer he looked at the dens in the walls, the longer he let himself remain where he was, the more he was allowed to feel a connection. Something stirred within him, allowing him to remember everything. The cats he was slowly remembering coming in and out of camp, cats sunbathing and kits playing near the nursery.
βI do,β he answered. βThis is where my clan's home was located.β
She gave a nod, her faint outline sparkling with flashes of stars as she stood.
"Yes," the white she-cat meowed, looking over at him, "This was your camp."
His gaze moved to the dens in the walls, his pride quickly turning into rage. The emotion was overwhelming as it was so strong.
"Why did you bring me here?" He snarled, looking at her. "Just to show me my failures as a leader once again? All you StarClan cats are the same."
"No, love," her gaze grew wide, genuine sadness glowing in her eyes. "I've brought you here once more as a reminder of your clan, the one you worked so hard for and took much pride in.β
His amber eyes narrowed at her, and he lashed his tail. "StarClan will never accept it! No matter how many times it's remade."
Her eyes softened, holding much emotion.
"Perhaps," she replied, padding to a carving on the wall of the camp, her gaze looking up at it, "Though StarClan is dividing. Many cats taking your side. Your clan has always had a place amongst the stars. No matter what you think."
"But they allowed my clan to suffer!" He hissed at her, his claws flexing and his fur stood on end, "Just because cats are changing their minds doesn't mean it will happen!"
"Greatstar has sided with you."
He blinked. The name sounded familiar, and it took him a moment to remember who that was.
StarClanβs first leader? The Greatstar?
"Why?" He demanded.
"CanyonClan has always been the clan that StarClan wanted to accept. They believe CanyonClan could become the fifth clan that can enter our ranks. Greatstar sees your struggles and understands that StarClan needs your clan," She told him.
The brown tom stared at her, wondering why the leader of StarClan was suddenly on their side. He didnβt know how to feel about it. It didnβt seem real!
"Many challenges are coming, the past will come back and you can't outrun it," The white she-cat spoke up, the tomβs gaze meeting hers.
βWhat?β He questioned her.
She padded over to him, her nose touching his, "My dear, this is your final chance. Don't waste this life we've granted you."
βWait, what do you-β
A wave of what felt like lighting hit him within heartbeats. Everything grew white around him, his body being swept up in the vortex of bright colors. As quick as the colors came, they faded until he saw nothing.
His final life was waiting for him.
Chapter One
Perched on a sturdy rock attached to the walls of the camp, a brown tabby sat, amber eyes watching the empty camp clearing. In the distance, he could see the warm colors of a sunrise taking place. Crisp air swirled around him, ruffled his thick pelt. It reminded him that leaf-fall was coming to an end. Though the deputy had no reason to believe that leaf-bare would be any different than a few moons ago.
His ears twitched as he heard rocks falling, catching his attention. A purr rumbled in his throat, as he spotted movement in the cracks of the camp wall, coming from two figures moving out of the warriorsβ den.
A bright ginger-and-white she-cat emerged from the warriors den, a gray tabby tom following after. Whiskers twitched as he recognized them as Squirrelpelt and Graytuft, two cats who recently settled in CanyonClan.
The tabby watched as Squirrelpelt and Graytuft shuffled down the path, before his body moved to head down to greet them.
βGood morning, Tigerburr,β Graytuft spoke up as the warrior padded towards them.
βMorning, Grayfur,β Tigerburr dipped his head, his eyes shifting to Squirrelpelt as the she-cat was heading to the apprentices' den.
Collecting Bumblepaw for the dawn patrol. Tigerburr noted.
βIs anyone else joining?β Graytuft questioned, his amber eyes full of wonder.
Graytuft was an older cat, but Tigerburr admired his will to learn about their clan life. It made his chest squeeze with pride in his new clanmate.
βBarkfall should be joining, but itβll be fine if he doesnβt come down,β Tigerburr answered.
Graytuft dipped his head, though he turned when Squirrelpelt padded over with Bumblepaw in tow. Tigerburr noted that the ginger apprentice looked tired, reminding the deputy of his own apprentice days.
The warrior dipped his head to the ginger-and-white warrior before his gaze shifted towards the warriorsβ den, just in time to see his friend coming down towards them. Tigerburr remembered Barkfall coming to CanyonClan soon after Lionstar, Goldenwing and Tigerburr found the camp. Barkfall was a loyal cat and was a great mentor.
Even after all that has happened in WispClan. Tigerburr thought.
βTigerburr,β Barkfall greeted. βAre we heading towards StreamClanβs border?β
βYes, about that,β Tigerburr meowed, βWe will be going that way. Though I would like to check out the Twolegplace border as well. Thereβs a few strays and kittypets that have been wandering through lately.β
He could see the nods from his clanmates, knowing that they understood. Tigerburr knew that these loners and kittypets were almost harmless, but in order to protect his clanmates, scaring them away would be for the best.
βGraytuft,β the tabby spoke up, making the older tabby look at him questioningly. βWould you like to lead the patrol?β
The tabbyβs eyes lit up in both shock and excitement. βI would be happy to.β
Tigerburr could see the tomβs paws itching to finally lead his first patrol, so he stepped away to let him lead. Graytuft immediately padded towards the gorse tunnel, the four other cats following after. Tigerburr watched them go before he quickly took up the rear of the patrol.
As the patrol streamed out of camp entrance, Tigerburr took a deep breath in, taking in the crisp air. It was refreshing. He could smell mice, birds and squirrels. Leaf-fall was coming to an end, but the forest was still rich with prey.
The clan will be well fed before leaf-bare hits. Tigerburr found himself taking a note of speaking with Lionstar about sending out extra hunting patrols.
The forest around him began to brighten up as the sun grew higher in the sky, warming up the territory. Rays of light were slowly flowing through the trees leaves above them, dappling their pelts in soft golden light. Everything felt right.
βTigerburr.β
Blinking, the tabby cat looked towards the older ginger tom, his gaze questioning.
βWhat is it, Barkfall?β He asked.
A look of grief flashed in Barkfallβs eyes, giving Tigerburr a moment to realize that Barkfall was remembering Silverflight.
Silverflight was a young, beautiful she-cat that Barkfall had fallen in love with. Tigerburr didnβt know Silverflight as she joined CanyonClan only a moon before she gave birth to their kits, Thornkit and Bluekit. Silverflight had passed soon after their kits came into the world, leaving Barkfall to parent his kits. Goldenwing was more than willing to take in the two kits, providing for them in ways Silverflight couldnβt.
βThornkit and Bluekit are six moons,β The elderly tom began, βwill they become apprentices soon?β
The question didnβt surprise Tigerburr; the tom was wondering that himself.
βLionstar hasnβt said anything about them,β Tigerburr responded, βbut, I will talk to him about it. Snakepaw and the other apprentices may be on his mind as they are close to becoming warriors.β
Barkfallβs expression was a mixture of hope and impatience. Tigerburr couldnβt quite understand the tomβs feelings as the warrior had no kits of his own, but he rested his fluffy tail on the tomβs shoulders.
βI will talk to Lionstar as soon as I get back to camp,β Tigerburr meowed, hoping that him saying it twice would sooth his friend.
βAlright,β Barkfall responded, his amber gaze shifting to his paws as he padded along.
Silence fell between them as the patrol moved towards the border that separated CanyonClanβs and StreamClanβs territories. Graytuft turned and headed along the borderline, marking the border, while Squirrelpelt and Bumblepaw moved the opposite way. Tigerburr stood at the border, his gaze lingering on the territories.
StreamClanβs territory was marshland with few trees. Tigerburr could see the Clanβs camp in the distance as StreamClanβs territory wasnβt very vast. The tabbyβs eyes moved towards the trees that were to the right of StreamClan. The feeling of anger flared threw the tom as the trees held his former Clan.
A Clan that destroyed everything in the warrior code. Tigerburr hated his former leader, Blackstar. The leader was horrid, bending rules for his own personal gain. Tigerburr could remember the abuse moving towards the she-cats and kits. Lionstar, Lionfoot at the time was at the front with Tigerburr to change the Clansβ way. But when he, Lionstar and Goldenwing left the clan, Tigerburr wasnβt sure that anything changed.
I donβt want to think about it. The warrior shook his head as he looked over to Squirrelpelt and Bumblepaw. The ginger-and-white she-cat was a ways off with her apprentice. Tigerburr assumed she was teaching him about the borderline. Squirrelpelt may be new to CanyonClan, but she had been with the clan for a few moons. As for Bumblepaw, the tiny apprentice was found as a kit before she joined. The two were a perfect pair as Tigerburr noticed the motherly affection for the apprentice.
βTigerburr.β
Turning his head towards Graytuft, the older tom had concern in his eyes.
βI went along the line heading towards the Twolegplace,β Graytuft started, β I can smell the scents of the strays near the Sand Clearing.β
As Graytuft spoke, Squirrelpelt and Bumblepaw came padding over. Tigerburr was concerned about his clanβs safety when it came to a new threat. He knew where he stood when it came to the next step to this patrol, but Tigerburr would let the newest cats figure it out. They were still new and were going to have to think about their safety and the clanβs safety.
βWe could check it out,β Squirrelpelt suggested, βIf the strays are in the area, we can chase them off.β
βThat could lead to a battle,β Barkfall commented.
βIt could. Theyβll have more cats with them and we could easily be defeated,β Graytuft responded. βIf we are defeated, that could make them feel bold and they could venture further into our territory.β
Surprised by the quick response from the gray warrior, Tigerburr took a note of that. He was impressed with Squirrelpelt and Graytuft.
Graytuft would be a great mentor. Tigerburr thought briefly before Barkfall spoke up.
βThe later we stand around and let them think itβs okay to come into our territory could be dangerous,β Squirrelpelt told Graytuft, βIf we donβt act, they could find the camp and attack if they wanted.β
βThey may already know of the camp,β Bumblepaw piped up.
βThen we can have a talk with Lionstar,β Graytuft meowed, his amber gaze shifting to Tigerburr. βWhere do you stand with this?β
βWe should speak to Lionstar,β he meowed. βUnless we are ambushed, Lionstar has the final say.β
βThen letβs hurry back to camp,β Graytuftβs fur ruffled as Squirrelpelt and Bumblepaw nodded in agreement.
While the fear of the strays finding their camp was settling in more and more each day, Tigerburr felt pride fill his chest as he watched his Clanmates go ahead of him.
I am proud of this Clan. He thought, hurrying to catch up.
Chapter Two
Lionstarβs green gaze followed the patrol as they padded into the camp. The look on his brotherβs face had Tigerburr knowing that Lionstar had an idea of what they were going to tell him.
The muscular tom came down from the highrock, his fur ruffled as his gaze met Tigerburrβs. The leader didnβt look to be in a good mood. It wasnβt odd to see Lionstar look like he was thinking or wearing a stoic expression.
βIβm assuming you found something?β Lionstar meowed, his tail swaying.
Graytuft immediately spoke up. βYes, near the Sandy Clearing I could smell the strayβs scent.β Lionstarβs eyes narrowed, the leaderβs fur ruffled. Tigerburr knew that look, knowing Lionstar was about to lecture them.
βWe came back to camp to speak with you about this,β Tigerburr meowed. βWe did think about checking it out, but it was decided that we would head back to camp.β
Lionstar looked at his brother, his fur lying flat. Seeing that Lionstar had calmed down, Tigerburr was still unsure of what Lionstar was thinking or planning to do.
βWhatβs going on? Is someone planning a party?β
Turning his head, Tigerburr recognized Russetscorch, CanyonClanβs deputy. The flaming red-brown tom wore a smug look, though his eyes showed the confused expression.
βThe strays are moving further into our territory,β Lionstar told him.
Russetscorchβs eyes widened and his tail lashed. βDo we have a plan?β
Do we? Tigerburr thought, concern flashing through him once more.
βI would like to discuss that with our senior warriors and first settled cats,β Lionstar meowed.
Thatβs about two cats! Tigerburr fretted as Russetscorch called over Goldenwing, Lionstarβs mate.
βBarkfall and Tigerburr, you can stay to discuss this, the rest can return to your duties,β Lionstar meowed.
Although not surprised as he himself was a founder of CanyonClan, Tigerburr watched as Graytuft, Squirrelpelt and Bumblepaw pad away. They didnβt stray far, though Tigerburr did not blame them for wanting to know what would happen.
As Goldenwing came over, Lionstar seemed to grow a tad bit calmer. Goldenwing took her place next to Lionstar, while Russetscorch took his place next to Tigerburr.
βIn order to deal with these strays, we should set up a plan in case they attack us or we attack them,β Lionstar meowed.
βHow about we leave them be?β
Tigerburr blinked as his amber eyes shifted to Barkfall. The proud warrior had a serious look in his eyes. Tigerburr had always thought Barkfall didnβt want the strays in their territory. Why was Barkfall on the strayβs side?
βExcuse me?β Lionstar asked, the large tomβs tail lashed.
βAll I am saying that they may just be passing through and are taking their time,β Barkfall meowed, βIt is almost leaf-bare, and it's in their best interest to stop and seek shelter.β
βBy intruding on our territory?β Russetscorch questioned. βIf youβve forgotten, They ambushed me! I couldβve been killed!β
Barkfallβs eyes narrowed. Tigerburrβs heart raced as he shifted to ready himself to intervene if anything was to happen.
βNeed I remind you that your kits are going to apprentices?β Lionstar asked. βHow would you feel if Thornkit was attacked and killed because you thought it was best to let the strays hang around?β
Shocked by Lionstarβs words, Tigerburr jumped to his paws.
βLionstar!β Tigerburr snapped his head towards his brother. βThat was unnecessary!β
βBut itβs true,β Lionstar meowed, green eyes narrowing at Tigerburr. βI know I would feel awful for letting Morningkit go out only to have her wind up in camp, dead.β
βI get it,β Barkfall hissed, βYou think my idea to let these cats pass in peace is out of the question? Then attack them and start a war. Or let them join, I donβt know.β
βWe are not letting any more cats join,β Lionstar told him, βLeaf-bare is on itβs way and adding more mouths to feed will not be in our favor.β
Our Clan was built on letting cats join! Tigerburr flattened his ears, not believing what he was hearing.
βAre you forgetting that you just let Graytuft join?β Russetscorch piped up, βHow bad can it be to let one or two cats join?β
At least Russetscorch is bringing that up!
Lionstarβs ear twitched, though he ignored his deputy. βWe are off topic. If any patrol sees these strays, drive them out. There will be no recruiting and we will not let them think itβs okay for them to hunt in our territory.β
Barkfall gave a scoff as he stood and stomped off. Russetscorch wasnβt too far behind the older warrior. Tigerburr watched them go, though he immediately turned to Lionstar.
βCanyonClan is built on letting cats join,β he told his brother.
βAnd?β Lionstar challenged. βWe have enough cats in our Clan. I am focused on the future and we both know that leaf-bare around here is harsh.β
βI understand that, but Barkfall has a point. There is no reason to start a war with these strays.β
βIf there is war, then so be it. CanyonClan is stronger together,β Lionstar glared at him. βThis discussion is done. Go and find some cat to take on patrol with you.β
As Lionstar padded away, Tigerburr finally felt the frustration sweep through him. Why was Lionstar being so difficult? He wasnβt like this a few moons ago!
Tigerburrβs eyes then moved to Goldenwing, the golden tabby staring after Lionstar.
βSome help you were,β Tigerburr snorted.
Goldenwingβs green eyes flashed. βLook, I am neutral on this. I will act out once something happens.β
Tigerburr chose not to respond as he was sure he would offend her if he said anything. Instead, he whipped his body away and let his paws take him across camp. As he moved towards the fresh-kill pile that was stuffed in a crack near the entrance, Tigerburr was quick to notice two curious kits peeking their heads out of the nursery. Recognizing them as Thornkit and Bluekit, Tigerburr snatched up two mice and padded over to them.
Bluekit was the first to notice Tigerburr and she nudged her brother. Thornkit blinked and his brilliant green eyes looked up at the warrior as Tigerburr came over. The kits seemed to stiffen in his presence.
βHello there,β Tigerburr greeted them, placing the mice on the ground, βI brought you two mice.β
Hoping his gift would loosen them up, Tigerburr took a step back. He watched as Thornkit was the first to move, sniffing the mouse. Bluekit watched her brother before she moved forward as well to sniff.
Kits will be kits. Tigerburr thought as he noticed that Bluekit was copying her brother. Even though the two were going to be apprentices soon, they were both rather timid. Tigerburr didnβt want to admit, but his mentor and their father, Barkfall hasnβt been in their life much. It was Goldenwing that raised them with the help of Lionstar and Squirrelpelt. Tigerburr could only assume the Barkfall still felt his heartbreak of his mate.
βYou know,β Tigerburr spoke to them, βYou two will be apprentices soon. Isnβt that great?β
The siblings looked at each other. He could see the uncertainty in their eyes, but despite that, was also wonder and eagerness in those eyes.
βAre we getting mentors?β Thornkit asked.
βOf course,β Tigerburr nodded.
βDo you know who?β Bluekit spoke up.
Tigerburr heard nothing from Lionstar and even though Tigerburr was going to question Lionstar about it, he was in no mood to speak to him now.
βI am unsure,β the warrior told them, βBut if I have to guess, either Berrystem or Owlmist.β
The two exchanged glances with each other again, their eyes as bright as stars. Tigerburr couldnβt help but to feel their excitement.
βOnly a few sunrises from now,β Tigerburr told them. βI will speak with Lionstar when I get the chance.β
βPlease do!β
βI want to know who my mentor is!β
Thrilled that the two were excited, Tigerburr felt a purr rise in his throat. He then shifted, letting his gaze move to the clan's camp. He saw Blackclaw and his apprentice, Dovepaw meeting up with Caveclaw and his apprentice, Snakepaw.
βTigerburr!β
Blinking as Blackclaw called his name, the tom moved over to them, only after saying goodbye to the kits.
βYes?β He asked, whiskers twitching as he looked between them.
βWe are going on a hunting patrol, would you like to come?β Caveclaw questioned.
Hunting would be good. Tigerburr nodded. We should catch more prey if we are to survive.
βAlright,β Blackclaw meowed, βLetβs head out!β
Feeling the other warriors excitement, Tigerburr purred to himself as he followed them out of camp.
Chapter Three
Padding into the camp clearing with mice hanging from his jaws, Tigerburr blinked when his gaze went to his brother. Lionstar was speaking with two CanyonClan warriors, Moonsplash and Berrystem. While Tigerburr knew of their history and why they joined CanyonClan, the warrior found it quite odd to see them sitting in close proximity without snarling at each other.
Growing curious, Tigerburr was quick to set his mice in the fresh-kill pile, before he let himself wander over. Glancing around, Tigerburr shifted in the sunlight, paws kicking up dirt.
If anyone asks, I have nothing to do. Tigerburr thought as he pawed at the ground before settling himself in the patch of sunlight. And Iβm sunbathing.
β-there are rumors coming from StreamClan cats talking of you two,β Lionstar was saying, his voice sounding tense.
βHuh? This is news to us,β Berrystem sounded irritated.
βThe patrols only heard of it this morning,β Lionstar meowed.
βOkay, so, what is so bad about these rumors that you needed to speak with us?β Berrystem questioned.
Angling his ears, Tigerburr leaned in to hear a bit better.
βLarkpaw and Seedpaw.β
Moonsplash immediately let out a muffled cry. It was the first time Tigerburr heard emotion over those two names. It only made him even more curious.
βWhat is StreamClan doing to them?β Berrystem sounded angry.
Lionstar paused, like he was trying to find the words.
βStreamClan is doing no harm to them,β the leader finally spoke, βGravelpelt reported that itβs ShadeClan and BushClan that want to get rid of them.β
βNo! That must not happen!β Moonsplash sounded desperate.
Tigerburr heard a harsh shush coming from Berrystem, which made the tabbyβs tail lash in anger.
Making her feel that her feelings arenβt valid? That made Tigerburr angry. Knowing their history, Tigerburr growled when he realized that Berrystem was making her feel horrible for caring.
The tabby rose to his paws and immediately padded towards his brother. He was quick to see Berrystemβs irritated look as the other warrior came over.
Ah, Berrystem knows Iβve been listening. Tigerburr didnβt really care. The expression on Moonsplashβs face was all he needed to join in the conversation. Though he wasted no time in knocking Berrystem away from the silver she-cat, a growl rising in his throat. The cream-and-white tom bared his teeth at the darker tabby tom in response.
βTigerburr, what are you doing?β Lionstarβs surprised meow had the large tabby turning to his brother.
βOffering my opinion,β Tigerburr stated, glancing to Moonsplash as the silver she-cat seemed grateful, βIf there are cats in trouble, CanyonClan has to help.β
Lionstarβs eyes narrowed. βCanyonClan hasnβt shown itself to any clan. Berrystem and Moonsplashβs relationship and their existence here puts us in danger.β
βOh so we are a danger to this clan?β Berrystem hissed. βYouβre the one who let us join!β
βAll the more reason that you two are a danger,β Lionstar, with a slight quiver in his voice, kept a level head.
Shocked, Tigerburr didnβt know how to respond. Silence fell upon them as each tried to understand what Lionstar had just said.
βI just want Larkpaw and Seedpaw to be safe...β Moonsplash mewed.
Hearing how small she must feel, Tigerburr immediately growled at his brother.
βItβs StreamClan against two Clans bigger than itself,β He told him, βHow is StreamClan going to defend themselves?β
βThat is none of my concern,β Lionstar meowed, though his lip curled, βI not am allowing anyone to help.β
βSo you donβt care about the lives of two young cats?β
βOf course I do, but we as a Clan have more important things to worry about.β
Lashing his tail, Tigerburr flattened his dark ears. He could feel panic come off his brother.
Lionstar is never scared. Whatβs going on?
βWhat's happened to the brother I know?β
Lionstarβs ears flattened, though he ignored him. The ginger leader said nothing as he rose to his paws and padded away. Tigerburr watched his brother go, his heart squeezing in his chest.
βGreat StarClan,β Berrystem growled, as he took a step forward, βLionstar is a pain.β
As much as Tigerburr didnβt want to agree, Lionstar had been difficult lately.
βAnyway, are you helping?β
Blinking, Tigerburr looked to Berrystem. βWhat?β
Annoyed, the cream-and-white tom narrowed his eyes. βAre you a mousebrain? I asked if you were going to help?β
Tigerburr turned his head to Moonsplash. The white she-cat was looking at him, her blue eyes wide and pleading. Knowing how much Larkpaw and Seedpaw meant to her, Tigerburr could not refuse.
βYes,β he meowed, βI will help you.β
Berrystem gave a snort. βGood, but the three of us canβt do it alone. Weβll need help.β
Moonsplash was nodding, her blue eyes moving to scan the clearing. Tigerburr knew many cats didnβt dare try to make Lionstar angry.
That limits our options. Tigerburr grumbled. Though out of the corner of his eye, Moonsplash darted away from him and Berrystem. His eyes followed her as the she-cat stopped near Skyflight.
βLooking for cats who will help will take some time,β Tigerburr meowed, eyes turning to Berrystem, βTry and find those who will help and letβs meet up.β
βWhen?β
βTomorrow? Maybe later on in the day to prepare?β
Berrystem gave a low rumble, but nodded. βThatβll work.β
Tigerburr nodded, before his gaze turned to Russetscorch. For a moment, Tigerburr ruled him out, but ultimately wondered if the deputy would be able to help.
βWeβll talk later,β Tigerburr rose to his paws and padded towards the flaming-red deputy.
Two warriors and an apprentice were with Russetscorch now, making Tigerburr realize that the deputy was going out on a patrol.
βMind if I join?β The warrior asked as he came over the group.
Russetscorch turned his attention to the tabby warrior before nodding. βThe more paws out hunting, the more prey we can catch.β
βI agree,β Tigerburr meowed.
βSnowblaze,β Russetscorch called to the pure white she-cat, βLead the patrol.β
Her yellow eyes gleamed as she nodded. As the white she-cat turned, Tigerstar stared after her. Tigerburr didnβt know Snowblaze well, but knowing her as Berrystemβs current mate, the maine coon wasnβt sure how Snowblaze would feel about Larkpaw and Seedpaw.
Sheβs out. He thought his optics shifted to Caveclaw and Snakepaw.
The muscular black-and-white tom was friendly enough. Caveclaw was one of the first cats to set a paw in CanyonClan. Tigerburr trusted him.
Iβll speak to him later. The tabby tom took a note for later. As he moved to Russetscorchβs side, Tigerburr wondered if Lionstar had said anything to him. Glancing to red tom to see if his expression would give away anything, Tigerburr what was going on with Lionstar.
His brother hasnβt spoken to him about anything in the few moons. Tigerburr remembered having deep and personal discussions, especially in the hell they called WispClan. Having Lionstar leave him out of important discussions made the warrior feel left out.
Maybe Russetscorch knows?
βHas Lionstar spoken to you about StreamClan?β Tigerburr asked.
The confused look on the deputyβs face told him that Russetscorch had no idea what he was talking about.
Maybe Lionstar hadnβt been given time? Tigerburr thought. But.. Itβs sunhigh and Lionstar was given the news early in the morning.
βWhy do you ask?β Russetscorch questioned. βDid something happen?β
He doesnβt know. Tigerburr knew he needed to say something.
βStreamClan has two apprentices that BushClan and ShadeClan want to get rid of.β
Russetscorch cocked his head to the side, βHow does that include us?β
βLarkpaw and Seedpaw are Moonsplashβs kits,β Tigerburr meowed, βand Berrystemβs.β
Russetscorch looked surprised, though his gaze went tense. βDo they know?β
Nodding Tigerburr gestured to Caveclaw a few fox-lengths away. βI am organizing a patrol with them to rescue the two. I am considering Caveclaw to be in this patrol.β
Russetscorch snorted. βLionstar didnβt order that. Heβll be angry if you even attempt to go.β
βItβs better than letting two innocent cats die because of their parentβs mistakes.β Tigerburr wasnβt even sure if the two cats would die, but the way Lionstar worded it earlier had him thinking that was the case. It made the warrior worry.
βLionstar doesnβt want to help in any way, shape or form,β As much as he was worried, anger coursed through him, βI would hate myself if I didnβt help in some way, especially if I knew about it and can stop it.β
Yellow eyes met green. Tigerburr knew that Russetscorch was debating his options.
βAre you willing to join our patrol?β Tigerburr questioned.
βTigerburrβ¦β
βIf you are with us, we have an excellent reason to intervene.β
Russetscorch looked at him before giving a lengthy sigh. βLionstar will not be happy. Heβs not very lenient these days.β
Narrowing his eyes, Tigerburrβs fur bristled. βIs one catβs opinion worth two lives?β
βNo.β Russetscorch didnβt even hesitate. βSnowblaze, Caveclaw!β
The two warriors turned to their deputy, surprised looks on their faces. Snakepaw came wandering over with the same amount of confusion.
βTonight we are going to StreamClan,β The deputy told them, βWe are rescuing two apprentices. Berrystem, Moonsplash and Tigerburr will be joining us.β
βTonight?β Tigerburr blinked. βWe need a plan!β
βTwo lives are at stake, a plan should be the last thing on our mind,β Russetscorch told him, his tone low and almost menacing.
It was surprising to see the deputy so serious. Knowing that Lionstar chose him as the deputy finally settled in. Russetscorch knew then it was time to be serious.
βWhere are we meeting?β Caveclaw meowed.
βNear the Sand Clearing,β the deputy responded, βItβs closest to StreamClanβs territory. Itβll be easier to sneak in.β
βYour plan sucks,β Caveclaw gave a snort. βBut, I am willing to forgive that.β
βThank you,β Russetscorch gave a sly smirk as if the black-and-white praised him.
Caveclaw eyes lit up in response, revealing that the two had something. Tigerburr couldnβt put his paw on it, but something was there.
βWhat can I do?β Snakepaw piped up.
Tigerburr opened his mouth to say something, but Caveclaw bet him to it.
βYouβre staying in camp,β he told his apprentice.
The disappointment was almost painful to see as Tigerburr knew Snakepaw was close to becoming a warrior. He knew that feeling all too well and understood how the apprentice was feeling.
βListen to him,β Russetscorch meowed, βHe knows whatβs best.β
βIβ¦ I understand,β Snakepawβs ears folded.
Caveclaw and Russetscorch looked at each other again and gave purrs as if agreeing with each other.
βNow, any questions?β
Looking at Snowblaze as she hadnβt said a word, Tigerburr could only wonder what she was thinking. He didnβt think much as he turned his attention back to Russetscorch.
When no one answered, Russestscorch gave a swift dip of his head as if to acknowledge the plan for them.
βGood, we meet there tonight.β
Chapter Four
Shifting in his nest, Tigerburrβs eyes opened. A faint blue light filtered into the warriors den, the tom realizing that it was moonhigh. Grunting, the warrior rises to his paws, stretching ever so slightly before he moves to leave the den. He assumed that the others had already left, so he didnβt look to the nests as he left the den.
As he shuffled down the rocky pathway, Tigerburrβs eyes shifted to the leaders den. A part of him was worried Lionstar knew what he and the few other cats were up to, but knowing that Russetscorch was on their side, he was sure that Lionstar knew nothing.
Just wait until he finds out. A little voice inside of him said, a shiver running down his spine. Lionstar could be ruthless, Tigerburr knew this better than anyone. It was better to not get on his bad side, especially since heβs been in a bad mood.
As he padded towards the entrance, he noticed a striking shining blue figures padding towards him. He turned his head, recognizing these figures as Moonsplash and Skyflight.
βSkyflight?β His tone mustβve come out as utter shick as the medicine cat narrowed her eyes and snorted.
βYes?β She responded almost in a condescending way. βYou have a problem with me joining?β
Tigerburrβs fur felt hot in embarrassment, but he let out his own snort. He never interacted with Skyflight until now. He never had a reason to go and speak with her. He was surprised to know that his medicine cat was moody.
βNo, I just didnβt expect-β
βI may be a medicine cat, but I am willing to put my duties to the side to help out my fellow warriors,β Skyflightβs tail lashed.
βSkyβ¦β Moonsplashβs ears folded back, her voice low and warning, βWe should goβ¦ The otherβs may already be heading into StreamClan territory..β
Skyflight scoffed and pushed past the large tom. Tigerburr watched as she disappeared into the entrance, before his ears flattened. He decided that Skyflight was not the type of cat he would like to interact with.
βSorry about that,β Moonsplash meowed, making Tigerburr look at her, βShe tends to go off when her rank is questioned.β
Tigerburr couldnβt help but to notice how the blue moonlight bounced off of her fur, making her already white fur seem brighter. Tigerburr almost had to squint to see her.
Even though he knew her since his Rebellion days, Moonsplash was still a mystery to him. He knew so little, but with what he knew, she was interesting. He didnβt know what she did to him, but he wanted to know more.
βItβsβ¦ Okay, I understand.β
Moonsplash seemed to beam before she moved past him, leaving the camp. Tigerburr, feeling a tad bit of excitement rise within him, scrambled to follow.
Heads turned as the three cats padded into the Sand Clearing. Tension filled the clearing, which had Tigerburrβs skin crawling. Heβs been in battles, but not knowing wheather or not there would be a battle had him on edge.
Tigerburr glanced around, spotting Berrystem and Snowblaze sitting with each other, probably talking to each other as Snowblaze seemed tense.
Tigerburr moved to join Russetscorch, who was now speaking to Moonsplash and Skyflight. The deputy turned his head to the former WispClan warrior, his eyes flaring with ideas.
At least Russetscorch has actually planned this. Tigerburr thought as he remembered Caveclawβs comment, making him feel a tad bit calm about this mission.
βCaveclaw has gone ahead to scout out StreamClanβs camp,β Russetscorch told him, βHe should be back soon. Then we can get this party started.β
βOther than that, do you actually have a plan?β Tigerburr questioned.
βDo I have a plan?β Russetscorch scoffed dramaically, βOf course I have a plan! Who do you think I am? Russetscorch?β
Skyflight and Moonsplash let out snickers, though Tigerburr narrowed his eyes, not taking too well to Russetscorchβs joke.
βIβm serious,β Tigerburrβs tail lashed as frustration ran through him. βWhat is the plan?β
Russetscorch blinked, almost as if he was offended, but quickly regained a serious expression.
βWe plan to sneak Moonsplash into the camp, letting her find the two apprentices. We hope that when they see their mother, theyβll come with us willingly,β Russetscorch explained.
Tigerburr glanced at Moonsplash, noticing that she looked nervous.
βLarkpaw and Seedpaw donβt know their mother.β
Fur stood on end when Berrystem moved over to them, anger seared through as Berrystemβs tone was confident.
βIf that was the case, why are we rescuing them?β Russetscorch pointed out.
It was satisfying seeing Berrystem realize that he shouldnβt have spoken. Though it seemed that Russetscorch was quickly going through his options as his eyes shifted between the two former StreamClan cats. The deputy opened his mouth to continue, but was interrupted by a familiar black-and-white tom moving through the bushes towards them. His blue eyes were wide and looked stressed.
βCaveclaw?β Russetscorch immediately dropped everything and jumped to the warriorβs side.
βWe have an issue,β Caveclaw announced, βBushClan and ShadeClan are on their way to StreamClanβs camp.β
Shock flooded through Tigerburr as he looked towards Moonsplash knowing that she wouldnβt take too kindly to the news. He was right as Moonsplash looked like she was about to have a panic attack. While the small group began to talk over themselves, Tigerburr was at the she-cats side, doing his best to try and comfort her.
βStop crying,β Berrystemβs growl caught Tigerburrβs attention.
When his paw lashed out at Moonsplash causing the she-cat to visibly shrink away, anger coursed through him; the kind that if Tigerburr let it take over him, he could kill. Heβs done it once, and he was sure he could do it again. The larger tabby didnβt hesitate to knock the cream-and-white tom away. It took all of his strength to not attack him right there and then.
βEnough! Donβt you touch her!β Tigerburr snarled at him, his fur bristling.
βDonβt tell me what to do!β Berrystem snapped back.
Before the two could tear each other apart, Russetscorch and Skyflight quickly moved between them.
βEnough!β Russetscorch voice boomed, βWe have a mission at paw! Fighting now will not help!β
Tigerburr so desperately wanted to attack Berrystem. Laying a paw on another cat was no way to react!
βWe need to go now,β Caveclaw quickly added, βStreamClan wonβt be able to handle two clans!β
βFox-dung!β Russetscorch swore, βGo! Stop BushClan and ShadeClan and rescue those apprentices! That is all I require of you!β
Almost immediately the deputy and Caveclaw rushed into StreamClan territory. Seeing the opportunity to get out of this situation he started, Berrystem ditched them and raced off, Snowblaze hot on his heels.
Tigerburr quickly nudged Moonsplash to her paws, βCome. Your children need you.β
Her water-like eyes meet his, βT-thank you.β
βYou can thank me later! Come!β
The tabby then bounded off, though stopped to make sure that Moonsplash was following. It took less than a few seconds to catch up with the group. He could feel the aches in his legs from pushing his body to his limits, but there was no way he was going to let these apprentices die, not after he volunteered to help.
As the small group grew closer to StreamClanβs camp, screeches erupted from the camp. BushClan and ShadeClan were already there!
Everything happened so fast as Tigerburr suddenly found himself flinging a tortoiseshell off a StreamClan warrior, who looked at him with surprise. Tigerburr didnβt stick around long as he scanned the clearing to try and find where Moonsplash was heading so he could help. He spotted her white pelt in the sea of bloodied pelts and immediately fought his way through.
βWispClan is here!β
A yowl rang in the air, causing Tigerburr to freeze as familiar pelts rushed past him. Though in his moment of sudden realization that his former clan, the one he tore apart was suddenly there.
Were they against StreamClan? For StreamClan? His internal thoughts werenβt answered as he was knocked down.
The shock of the impact snapped him out of his thoughts. Striking out against his attacker, the other large cat had him pinned, claws sinking into his skin and dangerously close to his throat. Back legs pushed into the cat's belly, hoping that the pressure was enough to push the cat off balance but to no avail. Air was suddenly hard to breath in as his attacker applied pressure to his throat. Gasping, limbs desperately trying to knock the cat off.
As quickly as it came, it disappeared as the weight of the cat was knocked off. Gasping for the air he lost, Tigerburr immediately stumbled to his paws. Two cats had knocked his attack away.
βYouβre welcome!β A smaller cat called from his position on the pinned cat.
Blinking, Tigerburr recognized the ginger apprentice.
βSnakepaw!β
βThatβs my name!β
Knowing that the apprentice had been told he wasnβt allowed to join, Tigerburr was livid on behalf of Caveclaw. Though expecting that the other cat was a CanyonClan cat, Tigerburr was about to snap at them. That was until the small, brown tom rose his head and green eyes met. Shock rose in him.
βV-Volenose?β
The WispClan warrior look equally surprised. Volenose was about to open his mouth to say something, but Russetscorch beat him to it.
βTigerburr! Help Moonsplash!β Russetscorchβs voice rang over the screechs of fighting cats. The burly tom stared at his brother for a heartbeat, before he darted away. Tigerburr was on the other side of the camp in a matter of seconds as he was sure he saw her slip into a den. Quickly, he slipped into a den, quickly noticing that Moonsplash was crouched with two apprentices, whose eyes were wide. They no doubt heard about the pan to kill them.
βWe have to leave,β Tigerburr announced as he came to their side.
βW-we canβt leave!β The pale cream she-cat mewed. βThis is our home!β
Knowing what they were feeling, Tigerburr did his best to be sympathetic.
βShadeClan and BushClan donβt think so,β he told them. βIf you come with us, we can keep you safe.β
The darker apprentice let out a hiss. βWe donβt know you! Weβre not leaving!β
βIf you donβt leave, youβll die!β Moonsplash snapped at them, their eyes widening. βPlease, come with us!β
The two apprentices looked at each other before, they relucntly nodded.
βGood,β Moonsplash seemed satisfied with that, before she moved to the denβs wall.
With a swift kick, the brambles that held the den together gave way revealing the marsh on the other side. Tigerburrβs heart pounded at the quick thinking on Moonsplashβs behalf.
βTell CanyonClan to retreat,β Moonsplash told him, βWe have the apprentices.β
Tigerburr gave a nod, turning to dash out of the den. As soon as he left the den, his eyes scanned the battlefield, but he spotted Russetscorchβs fire-red pelt.
βCanyonClan, our mission is complete!β Tigerburr yowled, before he raced back into the sea to leave the battle.
βGo CanyonClan!β Russetscorchβs voice followed after his.
It didnβt take long for Tigerburr to escape the battlefield, followed by Snakepaw and Snowblaze. As soon as the three grew closer to their territory, the tabby warrior stopped to make sure that his clanmates were following. He spotted Caveclaw and Russetscorch sprinting towards them. The former WispClan warrior didnβt see Berrystem, but he figured that the tom managed to get away.
Beside him, Snakepaw was bleeding heavily on his shoulder. Tigerburr quickly noticed that he had a couple of nasty scratches on his face.
Heβs going to have some scars. The large tom leaned over the apprentice, checking for more injuries.
βIβm fine,β Snakepaw grumbled as the warrior was nosing the bloodied fur.
βI think not,β Tigerburr responded.
Snakepaw gave a grunt. Tigerburr then turned his attention towards the deputy and Caveclaw as they finally reunited with them. When Caveclaw noticed that Snakepaw was with them, the tom began to berate the apprentice.
βWhereβs Moonsplash?β Russetscorch asked, his green eyes questioning.
βShe had Larkpaw and Seedpaw,β Tigerburr told him, βShe managed to get away with them. She might be heading back to camp.β
The red tom nodded before he moved to join Caveclaw. As Tigerburr watched the two before he looked towards Snowblaze. The white she-cat was staring towards StreamClanβs camp, most likely looking for Berrystem. Then it dawned on him.
Where is Skyflight? Tigerburr began to worry. Did the medicine cat get seriously injured and couldnβt get away?
βSave that look for someone else.β
Tigerburr spun around as Skyflight moved in to greet the group. Her pelt looked spotless, which only confused the warrior.
Did she even fight?
βBlood makes my skin act up,β Skyflight grunted, her yellow eyes narrowing. βYouβre thinking too loud, I can hear it.β
Tigerburr gave a low rumble as Skyflight quickly slid past him and went to Russetscorch. The brown tom watched the two speak to each other.
βAlright,β Russetscorch turned towards the warriors that were with him, βWe should head back to camp.β
βIs that so?β
His fur stood on end as his eyes met Lionstarβs. The leader looked irate, as did the few cats there were with him. Dread settled in as Lionstar's eyes met Tigerburr's.
Oh, StarClan...
Chapter Five
Peace. It was silent, and it felt like she was drifting into the clouds. Now floating on these clouds, she dreamed of chasing the next mouse or the next bird. She was purring as she sank her teeth into the chewy, tasty mouse that she had caught. It was all so wanted, a nice meal. Until screeching snapped her eyes opened. Beside her, Squirrelpelt and Graytuft lifted their heads, tired and confused looks spreading across their faces.
βGreat StarClan,β Gravelpelt growled as the large tabby lifted himself, βWhat is happening now?β
Owlmist watched him go, before she lifted herself up to follow him out. To her surprise, Lionstar was screeching to a group of cats. Noticing that the leaderβs brother, Tigerburr was arguing, followed by Russetscorch had her questioning what had happened. Owlmist could see the stress in the ginger leaderβs eyes, showing her that he was cracking under his deputyβs and brotherβs arguments.
The she-cat then looked at the group of cats, before noticing two new cats, cowering near Moonsplash, their wide eyes watching Lionstar. Skyflight was settled near Snakepaw, rubbing herbs on him.
βWhat happened?β Cloudstorm asked, the skinny white tom padding towards Caveclaw.
βBushClan and ShadeClan were going to kill two StreamClan apprentices,β Caveclaw meowed, his eyes lighting on fire, βLionstar would rather have them killed than help them, so Tigerburr rounded us up.β
What? Horror flooded through her as her eyes drifted towards her leader. Lionstarβs own eyes were filled with rage as cats began to mummer to each other.
βCanyonClan isnβt ready for the other clans!β Lionstar announced, βThat is why I said no!β
Tigerburr was quick to counter. βLetting innocence die is more important than our clan's safety! We can handle threats!β
βOur clan is powerful,β Barkfall added, βWe have plenty of clanmates. We can handle whatever comes our way.β
The clan was in an uproar as her clanmates began to yowl their opinions. While what Lionstar wanted to do was horrible, Owlmist actually couldnβt help but to agree. Lionstar was trying to keep them safe and with these strays around, Owlmist saw what Lionstar was trying to do.
If too many cats know of our existence, itβll lead to our downfall. She knew this.
Though her furious clanmates had her keeping quiet.
β-it doesnβt matter! Whatβs done is done!β Lionstarβs voice rang over the yowls. βAll cats that chose to go on this rescue mission are to be punished. Starting with Snakepaw! You were really close to becoming a warrior. Since you decided to go along, you will not earn your warrior name until another four moons!β
The clan was in uproar again, this time Owlmist understand why the clan was so angry. Lives were on the line and all Lionstar was doing was punishing? Was clan life really this stressful? Lionstar had done nothing wrong! Owlmist felt herself being torn from understanding what the problem was to knowing that Lionstar was right.
βYouβve gone too far!β Cloudstormβs enraged voice had Owlmist shaking.
βThatβs a load of foxdung! Snakepaw has done what was right, why are you punishing him?!β Squirrelpelt snarled.
Great StarClan. Owlmist wasnβt sure what to think now.
βStop it Lionstar!β Tigerburrβs large frame stepped towards his brother, his voice pleading. βDonβt make it worse.β
βWorse how? Youβve all gone against my word!β
βPunish them!β
A feeling of relief filled her chest when she realized that she wasnβt the only one believing Lionstar was right.
βThey broke the code! Your word is law!β
From where she stood, Owlmist could see fear in both tomsβ eyes. Tigerburr definitely wanted Lionstar to stop, but with the sudden validation of his actions, Lionstar stood strong. Though Owlmist grew confused when Tigerburr suddenly backed off, head down.
βWhy are you doing this? Have you become like Blackstar?β
The warrior's voice was merely a whisper, but Owlmist heard it. Such hurt and bitterness had her remembering the rumors from her clanmates. As far as she knew, the brothers had started a rebellion within their former clan but escaped.
She always thougt that it was a load of lies, but the way Tigerburr sounded and Lionstarβs reaction by striking his brother was all she needed to know that it was true.
Clanmates immediately took sides, stopping Lionstar from further attacking Tigerburr while a few went to the brown tabbyβs side. Owlmist remained where she was, unsure of where she was needed.
βWhat is wrong with you?β Goldenwingβs green eyes flashed at Lionstar.
Realization flooded Lionstarβs gaze. βTigerburr, Iβm-β
βGo and cool off,β Goldenwing snapped at her mate, before she turned her attention to the now wounded Tigerburr, βDonβt come back until your head is clear.β
Almost immediately, cats shuffled away, though Owlmist watched as Lionstar seemed frozen in place. Though Owlmist knew his clan was turning on him, she padded over to her leader. Lionstar was right. Protecting his clan came first.
She rested her tail on his shoulder, his eyes meeting hers.
βI believe you did the right thing,β she meowed.
Lionstarβs eyes widened. βHave I?β
βProtecting your clan comes first, right? You did that.β
The ginger leader was silent before he nodded. βAt least a few loyal warriors know the reasoning behind my actions.β
Owlmist, feeling pride fill her chest, watched as the leader turned, moving towards the campβs entrance.
βWhere are you going?β Owlmist questioned.
βCooling off,β Lionstar looked back at her, βOr at least making it look like I'm doing that.β
Owlmist blinked but nodded. βFair. Have a nice night then.β
Lionstarβs eyes flashed, but he gave a low purr before leaving. Owlmist watched him, before she turned to head back to her nest to finish her dream.
Chapter Six
The thick, musky scent of the stray cats filled her nose, making her scrunch up her face in retaliation for the stench. Wow, these strays stink. Beside her, Blackclaw gave a low chuckle, though she glared at him. The long fured tom simply waved his tail, before turning his attention towards Dovepaw. The cream she-cat was about to begin her warrior assessment, her sister, Flowerpaw was on the other side of the territory, performing hers.
Warrior ceremonies. Owlmist vaguely remembered hers when she decided to join the clan. She never understood the concept of gaining new names. But for her, Owlmist was better than Nog.
As she strolled behind Gravelpelt, her green eyes wandered off into the trees that were surrounding them. She would love to climb one those trees and lay along the branches.
Patrolling seems like a waste of time. Owlmist thought as her gaze drifted from the trees. But Lionstar said that the strays were moving into our territory. That could be dangerous.
Though she quickly noted that Dovepaw was now disappearing into the undergrowth. It wasnβt long before her mind wandered back to what had happened almost two sunrises ago. The fight that left the clan divided based on opinions. Owlmist hadnβt seen Tigerburr as much, but the times she saw him, the big tabby seemed down and haunted. In all honesty, Owlmist had begun to wonder if she was choosing the wrong side.
βI hear that Lionstar is planning to give you an apprentice soon.β
Snapping her head towards Gravelpelt, her mouth agap. The older warrior let out a deep chuckle at her reaction.
βItβs a great honor to have an apprentice,β he told her, βbut of course, it is a challenge.β
βI take it you had an apprentice?β Owlmist replied.
βOnce,β The tomβs eyes lit up as if to reminisce a memory, βHe was a good apprentice, but shy and difficult to bring him out of his shell. Another warrior and I trained him together, which seemed to helpβ¦ But he turned out to be a great warrior. I donβt blame him one bit for what happened.β
Growing curious, Owlmist leaned in a bit. βWhat happened?β
βHe and his brother stood against their leader and it cost them everything,β Gravelpelt told her.
Blinked, Owlmist let the words settle in. Then it hit her.
βYou mentored Tigerburr?β Her voice rose in surprise.
The brown tabby gave a nod. βI mentored him as well I could, being in a different clan and all, but heβs turned out great.β
Shocked by this new information as well confirmation as to Tigerburrβs and Lionstarβs past in the Clans, Owlmist felt like she understood.
βAnyway, we should continue,β Gravelpelt gave a low huff as he rose to his paws, βBy the time we head back, those apprentices will be done with their assessments.β
Knowing that he was right, she shifted to follow him. Gravelpelt took the lead, which Owlmist didnβt have a problem with.
As they padded in silence, Owlmist could feel that Gravelpelt wanted to speak with her about something. It was a strange tension in the space between them that had her nervous. Though when he didnβt say anything, she figured that he didnβt know how to word his thoughts.
βSo,β the tom began, βI noticed you didnβt say anything during the clan fight.β
A chill ran down her spine as his words seemed cold. The pale she-catβs eyes shifted to the bushes that they were passing. She was nervous at this sudden attention she was receiving, especially when it concerned something that she would rather keep to herself. She didnβt know where Gravelpelt stood during the clan fight.
βAnd?β She questioned, hoping that she didnβt sound too skittish.
βI was curious,β he continued, βI could see that you seemed to be siding with Lionstar.β
Am I that easy to read? Owlmist wanted to whack herself with her paw. She was angry at herself, but that anger seems to stem from her decision to side with her leader. Clan cats are so difficult!
βSo what if I am?β Owlmist stopped, using her body to show her emotions.
Gravelpelt turned to look at her, though his eyes didnβt seem hostile. βItβs nothing. Really. Iβm just glad that I can speak to someone about my thoughts.β
It took a moment, but Owlmist quickly realized that Gravelpelt was supporting Lionstar. As the brief history lesson between Gravelpelt and Tigerburr came to light, Owlmist knew that would cause trouble. Seeing that she wasnβt speaking to someone who supported the rescue mission, her tense body quickly loosened up.
βI see,β she meowed. βItβs great to hear that. Though I heard some cats become really vocal about it that day.β
βDovepaw and Bumblepaw?β Gravelpelt questioned, eyes wide. βI donβt expect that their opinions would stay the same, but I have a feeling Dovepawβs fatherβs relationship to the new cats has her on edge.β
Knowing that, Owlmist gave a nod, moving to pad forward. βIβm sure Flowerpaw has mixed feelings too.β
βIβm sure she does,β Gravelpelt rumbled. βAnyways, let us hurry, I donβt want to be late.β
Owlmist watched as he bounded ahead with a pep in his step. The pale she-cat didnβt understand the hurry, but bounded after him anyway.
---
βLet all cats old enough to scale the canyons, come here for a clan meeting!β
Owlmist heard the words ring in her ears as she slipped into the camp. She scanned the camp clearing, spotting Flowerpaw and Dovepaw sitting at the base of the large rock formation. From where she stood, the warrior could see their excitement prickle through them as they could barely stay still. Their mother, Snowblaze was sitting beside Dovepaw, her tongue flattening the wild cream fur.
Owlmist drifted into the crowd of cats, settling beside Gravelpelt. The tom had a pleased look on his face as he stared towards Lionstar.
βToday we have two young cats to give warrior names too,β Lionstar started, his green gaze shifting to their mentors. βCloudstorm, has Flowerpaw learned the meaning behind the warrior code and what is expected of her?β
βShe has,β Cloudstorm replied, his blue eyes shimmering with pride.
Lionstar seemed to think for a moment, but nodded as he looked to the white she-cat. βThen I, Lionstar, leader of CanyonClan call upon my warrior ancestors to look down at this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand your noble ways and I commend her to you as a warrior.β
Owlmist vaguely remembers those words for her own ceremony.
βFlowerpaw, do you uphold the warrior code and protect and defend your Clan, even if it costs your life?β
βI do.β Flowerpawβs voice trembled, but Owlmist made it out to be excitement.
βThen by the powers of StarClan, I will give you your warrior name. Flowerpaw, from this moment on, youβll be known as Flowerpelt. StarClan honors your determination and we welcome you as a full member of CanyonClan.β
Flowerpelt beamed from her position beside her sister. Dovepaw seemed to congratulate Flowerpelt, before she looked to Lionstar.
βBlackclaw, has Dovepaw learned the meaning behind the warrior code and what is expected of her?β
βShe has,β Blackclaw meowed.
βThen I, Lionstar, leader of CanyonClan call upon my warrior ancestors to look down at this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand your noble ways and I commend her to you as a warrior.β Lionstar looked to Dovepaw. βDovepaw, do you uphold the warrior code and protect and defend your Clan, even if it costs your life?β
βI do.β Dovepawβs reply come out as calm and smooth, unlike Flowerpeltβs.
Without hesitation, Lionstar continued. βThen by the powers of StarClan, I will give you your warrior name. Dovepaw, from this moment on, youβll be known as Doveshine. StarClan honors your loyalty and we welcome you as a full member of CanyonClan.β
As soon as he finished, the clan went into an uproar.
βFlowerpelt! Doveshine!β
Owlmist stayed silent, finding that if she truly didnβt understand she might as well not even join in. When the noise of the clan died down, Lionstar perked up again.
βBluekit and Thornkit, step up.β
Turning her head, Owlmist saw the two small kits come over.
βBluekit and Thornkit, you both have reached the age of six moons. Until you receive your warrior names, you will be Bluepaw and Thornpaw,β Lionstar then paused to look at the crowd of cats, his eyes landing on Owlmist in the process.
Owlmistβs heart swelled in her chest with the simple look.
βOwlmist, I know you havenβt had an apprentice, but I have great hope that you will pass down what you know to Bluepaw.β
Owlmistβs fur stood on end at her leader's words. She rose to her paws and moved between her clanmates to greet Bluepaw.
βI will pass on what I can,β Owlmist replied as she stepped towards the small blue-gray she-cat.
Owlmist lowered her head to let Bluepaw touch noses with her, before she turned her attention to Thornpaw.
βTigerburr,β Lionstarβs voice rang out, making the burly tom pad forward, βYou have shown kindness and skill when mentoring Redstorm, I expect you show the same to Thornpaw.β
Beside her, Tigerburr said nothing as he and Thornpaw touched noses. Owlmist noted the excited look in Thornpawβs brilliant green eyes as he stared up at his mentor.
βBluepaw! Thornpaw!β
Owlmistβs fur prickled as she looked back at her clanmates as they cheered for both the new warriors, the new apprentices and now the mentors. She didnβt expect that she would be in the spotlight, but she knew that she would have to get used to it.
Clan customs are odd. She thought. But, maybe itβs what I need to fit in.
Owlmist then turned to Bluepaw. βWhy donβt we explore the territory?β
Bluepawβs amber eyes lit up. βYes please!β
Owlmist let out a brief purr, before she glanced up towards Lionstar. Their gazes briefly connected. The leader gave a nod, his green eyes lighting up. Once again, Owlmistβs heart swelled.
If he thinks Iβm good enough to mentor, then I must do it. Owlmist then turned, letting Bluepaw pad in front of her as they moved to exit the camp.
Chapter Seven
Moving into camp, Owlmist, followed by Bluepaw, the pale she-cat felt like her paws would fall off. The pain in her paws had her briefly remembering her first time going along the territory with Berrystem when she first joined. The blue she-cat at her side shook her paws, most likely feeling the same ache of padding around their entire territory. Owlmist felt a purr rise in her throat.
βGo and grab something to eat,β Owlmist meowed, βGet some rest as well.β βAll right!β The apprentice turned and padded off.
Watching her apprentice go, Owlmist couldnβt help but to feel pride rise in her chest. Maybe actually stamping her name into the history of this clan could make her feel better about being almost clueless on how clan life is. Lionstar was kind enough to put his trust in her, giving her that chance. Giving a light sigh, Owlmist turned as she planned on getting some sleep herself. Though she stopped in her tracks as Lionstar came padding over. Her heart jumped in her chest as the larger cat almost towered over her.
βHow is everything with your apprentice?β The leader asked.
Her fur felt hot as his gentle green gaze searched hers. Feeling a strange feeling rise in her, she quickly avoided his gaze.
βOh! Uh, itβs going well!β Owlmist couldnβt believe that she was almost fumbling over her words.
What is this? Her fur prickled as she found herself unwilling to look Lionstar in the eye, no matter how many times she tried looking.
βReally? Iβm glad to hear that,β Lionstar meowed with a sigh of relief, βI was worried.β
Almost immediately, Owlmist feels what her uneasiness towards the leader flip into anger.
βWorried?β Her tone came out as a hiss.
Lionstarβs head whipped towards her, his eyes holding an offended gaze, βOnly a little bit!β
Owlmistβs eyes narrowed at him, her fur bristling.
Does he think I canβt train one cat? Unbelievable.
βOnly a little bit,β Owlmist repeated his words, gaining several nods from Lionstar.
βBluepaw is your first apprentice. And donβt think I didnβt notice how you act when going on patrols,β Lionstar told her. βI want to help you settle in and thought that giving you an apprentice would help you understand-β
βI am doing just fine, thank you,β she interrupted, frustration seeking throughout her body.
Great. I thought he believed in me!
The ginger tomβs eyes softened. βAre you sure?β
βYes, I am sure,β her tail lashed, βExcuse me, I am going to rest now.β
She could almost feel the confusion dripping off the leader as he stepped back. Feeling proud of herself, Owlmist raised her tail up high and trotted off. She felt his eyes linger on her as she went, but honestly, she did not care.
Did I really put my faith in a leader that doesnβt put his faith in me? Owlmist hated that. Was I wrong to choose him over Tigerburr?
As the pale she-cat moved towards the den, Owlmist eyed the willow tree that hung above the entrance of the apprenticeβs den, curving like a tree root, providing ample protection from any kind of weather. Its vine-like branches hung over the entrance, casually swaying in the breeze that was now ruffling her long fur.
Whiskers twitching, the warrior came to the entrance, sticking her head through the branches. She looked about the den, quickly spotting Bluepawβs dull blue pelt. Beside her, Thornpaw was resting peacefully. Knowing that Thornpaw was not assigned a patrol anytime soon, Owlmist knew she had to be quiet when waking his sister.
But, as she watched her apprentice, she was quickly reminded that Lionstar didnβt trust her with Bluepaw. Anger seared through her.
Owlmist shifted inside, moving to Bluepawβs side. Gently, she nudged the small she-cat.
βBluepaw,β Owlmist whispered, watching as Bluepawβs eyes fluttered open, βCome, itβs time for the patrol.β
A groan came from the apprentice as she moved to wake up. Owlmist watched for a moment, before she turned when she knew that Bluepaw was awake, but the pale she-cat moved away from the nest as Bluepaw rose from her nest to follow.
Padding out of the apprenticeβs den, Owlmist looked towards the cats on the patrol.
Gravelpelt, Snowblaze and Moonsplash were there. Owlmist quickly noticed that Snowblaze was on edge and glaring at Moonsplash. The silver she-cat didnβt seem to notice that hostility towards her.
She is so clueless, that Moonsplash. Owlmist thought, her eyes narrowing.
βOkay...β Bluepaw gave a yawn as she moved to Owlmistβs side, βLetβs go.β
Watching as her apprentice raced off towards the patrol, Owlmist felt hesitant to follow. But as she began to pad over, a familiar ginger pelt came wandering over.
βToday, we will head towards the Twoleg Place to make sure that the strays arenβt hanging around,β Lionstar meowed, his head turning to each clan member.
When Lionstar looked towards her, Owlmist felt the anger rise within her, but her heart raced. Her eyes narrowed, and she immediately turned her head.
βLetβs go, Bluepaw,β Owlmist meowed, turning away to head towards the campβs entrance. It did not take long for the patrol to follow her out of the camp and onto the sand- covered path that led towards the campβs entrance. With her tail raised and Bluepaw at her side, the warrior took no notice when her clanmates passed by.
The crisp breeze that ruffled her pelt as she padded along, the musky scent of the forest engulfed her. A hint of water hit her, telling her that rain was on the way. She sniffed the air, turning her attention to the prey in the area. While this was not a hunting patrol, she still sniffed around.
Squirrel. She could smell it in the undergrowth. Bluepaw.
βWhat do you smell?β She asked, looking at Bluepaw.
Bluepaw looked at her, the apprenticeβs amber eyes widening. Immediately, Owlmist felt doubt bubble within herself.
Is this too fast? She asked herself. Every apprentice learns this.. Right?
Bluepaw took in her question and lifted her muzzle. Owlmist could see that she was taking in the scents.
βMouse,β Bluepaw meowed, uncertainty filling her voice, βI think.β
Owlmist took a moment to take in the surrounding scents. The scent of a small creature was near them, and the warrior quickly identified it as a mouse.
βThatβs good,β She commented, "That's really good. We can practice some hurning tomorrow, yeah? Sounds good?"
Bluepaw turned to her, her eyes brightening. βYeah, sounds good!β
Owlmist purred at her, before she looked over to the rest of the patrol. They were at least a few fox-lengths away. Ahead, she could see the wooden fences that divided their territory and the Twoleg Place. The sour scents of the dens on the other side had Owlmist wrinkling her nose.
βSnowblaze and Gravelpelt, head towards the Sandy Clearing,β Lionstarβs voice came from behind, βMoonsplash, go along the Twoleg Place. Bluepaw, go with Moonsplash.β
What? Owlmist whipped her head towards her leader in complete shock. Lionstar turned his head towards her, his green eyes unreadable.
βOwlmist, come with me.β The ginger tom shifted to pad off into the forest.
No cat said anything, though Owlmist noticed that Bluepaw glanced over her shoulder as she padded after Moonsplash. Owlmist watched her go, hesitant to go after Lionstar.
βOwlmist, please,β Lionstar called over, causing the pale she-cat to look towards her.
The proud ginger tom had his eyes fixed on her, tail swaying in a way that had her believing he was angry. Ears flattening, Owlmist narrowed her eyes before she padded over.
Silence fell between them as they padded through the forest. Owlmist wasnβt sure where they were going. Each moment she spent with Lionstar, the more she felt anger, but she could feel the ample amount of doubt settle in.
βWhat do you want?β Owlmist questioned.
Lionstar came to a slow stop, but he looked back at her. His whiskers twitched before his gaze shifted to the ground.
βLook,β Lionstar started, βI know that you are angry at me.β
βAnd?β Owlmist lashed her tail.
βAnd my apology is overdue,β he meowed.
Long overdue! Her fur bristled.
βAh, so it takes you at least a few sunrises to figure out that you offended me?β Owlmist questioned.
βWell-β
βI donβt need your apology,β She hissed.
βOwlmist-β
βNo!β Owlmist snapped, her claws flexing as she tried to restrain her anger. βYou told me that you didnβt trust me with my own apprentice, that you gave me!β
βI am worried about you!β Lionstarβs raised his voice as his calm, almost submissive posture quickly changed into a defensive stance. βWhy canβt you accept that I want to help you?β
βMaybe because I donβt want it? You led me to believe that I could do it by myself, but the moment you told me you were worried, I knew you didnβt trust me!β
βWhat?β Lionstarβs eyes flashed with confusion. βYou think that I donβt trust you?β
That look in her leaderβs eyes had Owlmist going silent, her legs shaking as the adrenaline of his anger cursed through her.
βWhat makes you think that?β Lionstar questioned. βYou were the only cat that came to me and voiced that you believed that my decision was right. I trusted you and that is why I gave you Bluepaw as you are loyal to me.β
βThen why did you give Tigerburr an apprentice?β Owlmist hissed. βIf I am loyal, why him?β
βSo I can get him off my back!β Lionstar growled. βMy brother is hard-headed and when he has something he believes in, he will follow that until itβs solved. And heβs angry about my desisions and I wanted him leave me alone.β
Owlmist blinked. Well⦠Tigerburr had been angry at his brother. Owlmist remembered Tigerburr venting about how angry he was with his brother a few sunrises ago.
βI justβ¦β Owlmist started.
βJustβ¦ what? I understand what it's like to feel alien in your home, Iβve been there. I wanted to help by giving you an apprentice and I understand if that wasnβt the best option, but-β
βNo, an apprentice was the right move,β she meowed. βI feel like I have responsibility now.β
Lionstar nodded, βThatβs good.β
Though am I happy about it? Owlmist thought. She wondered if she was doing it correctly. Maybe she was moving too quickly?
Bluepaw did seem a bit surprised when she suggested hunting lessons.
Was Tigerburr teaching Thornpaw how to hunt? She wondered.
βButβ¦β
Lionstarβs ears twitched, βButβ¦?β
βI feel that I am doing it wrong?β She looked at him.
βCanyonClan is your family, Owlmist. You can ask any of us for help,β he told her. βWe can talk about this as we continue.β
Owlmist watched as he turned and she moved to follow. She wasnβt sure how she felt, but a weight was lifted off her shoulders.
Maybe I was overreacting. She thought. CanyonClan is my family. I shouldnβt be doing this on my own.
With her tail raised, she felt better and she followed after Lionstar.
