*major spoilers for TBC, including Veil of Shadows* Granted, it's been awhile since I've read TNP and POT so I'm not familiar with what's canon-ically stated about his prowess in earlier arcs, I always pictured Ashfur as lean, going on scrawny, even. An average fighter but by no means top tier.
Yet in TBC, while in possession of Bramblestar's body, he's clearly shown to be one of the most formidable fighters in the series. Nearly killed Tigerstar and single-handedly took out 3 young warriors. And while some of that could potentially be attributed to the fact that he's in Bramblestar's body - whose an absolute UNIT - you gotta assume some of it is innate strength/skill too.
Hence I'm curious: did you used to picture Ashfur as a top tier fighter before TBC?
Alternately, do you think Ashfur would be anywhere near as powerful a fighter outside of Bramblestar's body?

Ashfur has always been a good warrior. He comes from a great pedigree (his dad is Whitestorm), had some great training, and clearly was thought of highly by Firestar since he was chosen to mentor Lionblaze. He's also shown to be good at fighting badgers. With Bramble's body, he now has more mass to assist with his skill

He's described as muscular.

Ashfur was a strong fighter in my mind, but never a top ten kind of guy. He is at their very tails though, definitely within the top 15 or something like that. I will say though, Tigerheartstar has ZERO feats of combat ability to his name and that Ashfur didn't beat the three cats alone, he got back-up. Props to him for fending them off without being wounded, but he definitely would have lost had the cavalry not come.

I always saw him as kind of strong, but thinking back, I've changed my mind- Lionblaze was an apprentice and beat him multiple times (please correct me if I'm wrong), he took down Bone as an apprentice, but with a bunch of other apprentices, he had help with the badgers, and Hollyleaf killed him. (To be fair, she had the element of surprise on her side, but she's much younger than him, and it should have at least been hard to kill him. Hollyleaf took him down almost instantly.)

To be fair, it was Lionblaze as an apprentice, and Lionblaze still respected Ashfur's strength enough to seek him out to battle against when he was a warrior, after he already was beating Tigerstar in the DF and easily destroying everyone in the Eclipse battle.

Hollyleaf ambushed him perfectly without ever being seen, that's a huge force multiplier. You can't judge Ashfur for that, it was a total cheap shot. Lionblaze also never beat him cleanly, iirc. He gave him a few good fights as an apprentice, as I recall, but Ashfur was either winning or there was no conclusive winner.

Ashfur is definitely an above average and very strong fighter: -He was the lead fighter in Twilight against the badgers, single-handedly taking on them. -He pinned Weaselfur to the ground in DR. -He was chosen for literally every battle patrol by Firestar. -He was able to defeat Lionblaze in battle several times. -As the imposter, he held his own and won against the ambush on him early in VOS. with some of his opponents dead. -He was able to defeat Tigerstar and would have killed him if seeing Squirrelflight had not distracted him. And I know this doesnt relate to the question, but he was also courageous, attacking badgers himself in Twilight and following a fox scent himself by his own will (in LS) Hollyleaf ambushed him from behind, he was totally unprepared. It could have happened to any cat, even Bramblestar. Not his fault.
