Currently I'm reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Flown Into the Arms of Angels, the latter of which is about Newfoundland, Canada in the days following 9/11. (The topic/setting of one of my absolute favorite musicals, Come From Away). Also listening to the audiobook of the 4th book in the Bridgerton series.

I actually also read Maus recently. It was interesting especially in the context of it facing bans in some areas.
I'm currently reading Small Favors by Erin Craig. Not super far in but it's been pretty good so far.

Haven't actually read much further in it since. Been a bit swamped in school reading and work. I did read a book called A Spindle Splintered and it was...very not good. I'm kind of peeved bc the cover was beautiful so I feel vaguely like I've been duped lol

Oh boy, this book was a trip and imma rant. So I picked up the book cause it was short and had a pretty cover and i thought it was going to be like a poetic, lyrical fairytale retelling for some reason? But it's very in your face edgy-teenager kind of language, which is fine and kind of reminiscent of some of the early YA books I read, but it just was not what I was expecting from this and that was disappointing. Also for context it's a retelling of Sleeping Beauty and it was billed as profound and subversive. But its critique of the lack of agency the girls in the various versions of the story have was just so surficial and lacking in nuance?
It also early in the story acknowledges that a lot of modern critiques of these sorts of fairy tales aren't fair because they're drawn through the lens of a modern feminist reader rather than looking at things through different perspectives on womanhood and through the proper historical contexts of the times these stories originated. But then...the whole thing still sort of read like one of those modern critiques and it still pushed a very specific and modern idea of women's power? It was self-aware but not quite enough to make it actually have something compelling to say. Add to that the plot being a weird multiverse story with little development or explanation, and it just wasn't that interesting.
There was also a word-for-word tumblr joke in the book and the second-hand embarrassment I felt reading that was immense like who let the author put that in there.
I've seen a lot of positive reviews of it from people who thought it was funny and clever so maybe I'm being too harsh but I thought it was pretty bad lol end rant

Seems like a decent rant all around to me. It's a shame it didn't live up to anything useful that it claimed to. :/

Read a book called Night Sky with Exit Wounds. Oh I remember reading this poetry collection before. By Ocean Vuong? I ended up reading Ocean's novel On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous after reading the poetry.

I finished like four books one after another and am now in a bit of a slump. Have picked up a romance book bc people always say those are a good way to get out of a slump, but I've never really liked romances so we'll see how it goes lol

I've been reading a lot of comics lately (Sandman, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Something is Killing the Children, Monstress) but haven't been getting through much of my book tbr. Never finished that romance book either. I'm back in school and I have an insane amount of reading this semester so I figure that's gonna take up most of my reading brain space anyway tbh. Luckily it's a good mix of classical lit, modern lit, and academic papers so at least it shouldn't be boring lol. First on the list is Shelley's Frankenstein which is one classic I've somehow managed to dodge through all my years of schooling, but since it's kind of the origin of scifi I'm actually excited to try it.

Just finished Frankenstein! I enjoyed it thematically and there's so much to analyze within it I fully understand why its a classic, but the writing style (as with a lot of books from the 1800s) kind of grated on me, particularly the character descriptions lol. Think we're reading some horror retelling of peter pan next.
