(Heh, thank you Wrymn!)
Hazelsplash ~
They had at least managed to find Honeypaw, thankfully uninjured. Though it seemed as though Brambleshade was giving her a bit of a hard time for running off. Hazelsplash was about to open her own mouth to say something, but it seemed as though Shadowsong had beaten her to it. And maybe that was for the better, she supposed the older warrior would listen more to the deputy than he would some new warrior. But the tabby she-cat couldn't help but feel a little bad for Honeypaw for getting yelled at like that. But maybe that was for the better, she would have to learn not to run off that like no matter how excited she happened to be. That was something that Hazelsplash ahd also happened to learn the hard way. She could still hear the voice of her mentor grinding her gears every time she ran off without warning when she got too excited about something.
"I think we should move on," she simply offered her own opinion, glancing around the clearing, "Whatever prey might have been here would have been scared off by now." If not by Honeypaw thundering around in her excitement, but because of their raised voices. But then her attetion was caught by Shadowsong, the way he was standing, the way his tail it was moving. It appeared as though the dark furred tom felt anxious about something as well. "You feel it as well," Hazelsplash noted in a soft meow as she inched closer to the deputy, green eyes shining as she looked at him "Something about this is... off." The longer they stood there, the more weird she was starting to feel about the whole thing, like someone was in the shows constantly watching them. At least she wasn't the only one with this odd feeling, but it was worrying that someone else was feeling it as well. It meant it was more likely that there was actually something wrong.

★ Shadowsong ★ Brambleshade seemed to wilt beneath the deputy’s gaze, and it was clear that all of his anger misted away from him. The mentor apologized to Honeypaw, and Hazelsplash tried to break the tense atmosphere, before the subject was shifted back to hunting. Brambleshade offered to show his apprentice a few tricks and Honeypaw perked back up, but the bird she was hoping to catch had long since flown away, perhaps off to gather more supplies for its nest – or perhaps to escape danger. Who could know what lingered in a bird’s mind? Certainly not Shadowsong, or any of the other clan cats. The deputy’s icy eyes watched the creature flutter away before he turned his attention back to his patrol.
“Shall we hunt near herb hollow?” Brambleshade was saying. “It’s not too far.” Perhaps that was a good idea, Shadowsong mused. There was something off about this little clearing, one that put Shadowsong’s fur on edge and filled him with the urge to unsheathe his claws. Hazelsplash sidled up a bit closer to him. “You feel it as well,” she said softly, though the statement wasn’t a question. More of an observation. “Something about this is… off.” Shadowsong flicked an ear in agreement.
“Yes,” he said, keeping his voice low and soft – unusual for the typically jovial deputy. “I agree with Hazelsplash and Brambleshade,” he told the other cats, raising his voice a bit so they could hear him. Shadowsong flicked his tail, trying to dispel a bit more of the anxiety, before he turned and lead the way to Herb Hollow. Despite the fact that he was putting more and more distance between himself, his patrol and that little clearing, the unease he felt didn’t waver. Instead it followed them, as if whatever was lurking in the shadows of the forest was stalking them – hunting them.
“Perhaps we should split up into small groups?” Honeypaw asked. Shadowsong turned to fix his gaze on the young apprentice, even as Brambleshade agreed. He took a moment to mull it over. On the one hand (or paw, as it were), splitting up wasn’t a terrible idea. A patrol as big as theirs was likely to scare off any potential prey by virtue of the noise such a large group of cats was prone to make. On the other hand, Shadowsong did not like the idea. It didn’t sit well with him, when the atmosphere of the forest was so unfriendly today. He’d grown up in this forest – knew it as well as he knew his own heart. And yet today, it felt foreign, unfamiliar - as if he’d stepped paw amongst these trees for the first time in a lifetime today. He disliked it greatly.
“Very well,” he agreed, although it went against his better judgement. “Brambleshade, you go with Honeypaw. Hazelsplash, you’re with me. We could circle back around to the meadow while you, Brambleshade, continue to Herb Hollow with Honeypaw.”
Even as he said the words and watched Brambleshade and Honeypaw head off, he felt a sinking in the pit of his stomach, as though something terrible were going to happen.

★ Honeypaw ★ Honeypaw obediently veered off with Brambleshade as Shadowsong instructed. The deputy and Hazelsplash disappeared in the opposite direction, headed toward the creek. She watched their tails disappear into the undergrowth and then turned her attention to her mentor. "Just you and me then, Brambleshade!" she chirped and then she set off down the path.
Half of her wished to gallop ahead to the Herb Hollow to find some prey, but it was the other half that restrained her from doing so. She had to admit it was a bit odd that Hazelsplash had also noticed a strange feeling in the air. If Honeypaw were her brother, she might have wanted to return to camp. But, Honeypaw was not her brother and she was rarely phased by anything. So she trotted along with her mentor as if nothing had happened. Surely, she thought, it was nothing. She had only ever felt completely safe in her home territory. The mountains closed them in like powerful guardians, and the only predator she'd ever seen in person was an owl. That had been far away, however, and it was perched innocently in the branches of a sycamore tree. No, she thought, we're safe. And that was the last time she thought of it until it was already too late.
It wasn't long before they came upon the Herb Hollow. The trees began to thin out, and the grasses were taller than her head. The top-heavy flowers swayed drunkenly in the light breeze. Honeypaw batted at one of them playfully as they passed.
And then she froze, suddenly, as she spotted something up ahead.
"Look, Brambleshade," she whispered. "There's a thrush up there!" Sure enough, just down the path, a small bird was pecking at the ground. It hopped and fluttered under the cover of the grasses, but it had not yet spotted the pair of cats. "What do I do?" she asked, suddenly nervous. All of her previous attempts at catching birds had resulted in them escaping in an explosion of feathers. She crouched so low that the fur of her belly brushed the ground. She watched the bird for a few moments in complete stillness The prey did not sense it was being watched.
