I like both Zutara and Kataang. Zutara was the more interesting ship but Katara and Aang still had good development/chemistry. Avatar is the best story-driven cartoon I've watched. Enjoy your rewatch!

My family and I absolutely love The Last Airbender. (series, we don't speak of the crappy film XP) I personally prefer Kataang as it was a childhood ship of mine. Awhile back tho, my sister and I discussed the idea of Zutara a bit and agreed the chances of it were pretty much blown after Zuko's actions in Crossroads of Destiny. I wasn't against Katara forgiving him at all, but I prefer them as friends as there likely could never have been enough trust on Katara's end for a healthy relationship.

I was never a huge shipper in ATLA, probably because romance was not a big focus in the show. I prefer Kataang, however as it seemed like the most obvious endgame pairing, but I wouldn't have really minded if Zutara was endgame.

The mere thought of it still makes me recoil.
Cant help but wonder what Korra would have been if that had happened instead.

I thought Zuko and Mai being emo together was too adorable so I refused to ship Zutara.

I know Aaron wanted a different backstory for how the original Avatar came to be and if there was another series, he’d rather have had a more grown up gaang series than just skip to the next Avatar. I know he’s the reason there wasn’t a male Toph and male Azula. Bryke wanted there to be a love triangle between Katara, Aang, and a male version of Toph. Could you imagine? I’m happy with the characters we got.

Could someone explain to me how the Zutara ship started or why people like it? No hate, I'm genuinely curious. It never once occurred to me that they could be a couple.
Then again, I was never particularly invested in the romance part of the ATLA fandom.

Then again, I was never particularly invested in the romance part of the ATLA fandom. From what I recall, the creators were originally thinking of having Zuko become Katara's love interest. But they decided to pair Aang and Katara instead by the time they got to work on S3.
