Oakpaw didn't say anything in response at her mentor's instruction to keep he mind off of the distractions from the outside, simply leaning down and beginning to chew up the marigold that Twistedpath didn't grab. She quickly got it chewed into a paste and then, using her paw, she began applying it to as much of the head wound as she could, her paws moving themselves with an uncontrollable urgency as Twistedpath began barking more herbs at her. Comfrey. Which one's comfrey? I don't...wait... She whipped about, hurrying back to the store as panic began to set it as she looked between the various herbs. Celedine! She knew celedine, and she quickly swooped up a chunk of it and hurried it to her mentor's side. Her eyes were wide as she went to and fro and she was beginning to feel the heavy weight of treating such a vital wound. Then, she remembered her mentor had told her to chew it up.
Stooping down and beginning to chew it into a poultice as well, not even recognizing the foul taste amidst the situation. She quickly dabbed it over the eye, spreading it as much as she could while Twistedpath began barking more orders at her. Flattening her ears she tried to focus in on what her mentor was saying. She spun around and stood at the storage of herbs again, looking between them as she tried to figure out which leaf was the right one. "C-chew it up?" She asked, her voice shaking as she carried the incorrect leaf over as her sides began to heave from the running back and forth and the stress of the situation.
It was difficult to believe anything absolving him of responsibility in this situation, when Cherrystar had asked him to run and get help, had asked him to get something that would save their lives. Now, Cherrystar was dead, all of her lives bled out onto the floor of the Windclan camp. He shuddered as he imagined the leader coming back several times, only for a dog to spring upon her again at signs of life. Again, and again. And again.
No, he was completely at fault, even if this warrior couldn't see it. Still, he appreciated the shift in countenance from previously. She had been ready to tear his throat out before, but it sounded like seeing what she had, all of that seemed to dissipate, left with something that was more amicable.
He didn't say anything more, not wanting to argue about his guilt. "Cherrypaw...s-she has to make it..." He mumbled after the warrior assured him of the medicine cat's skill. "S-she said something, and it could..." He gulped, fighting back tears. "She could have just been hallucinating, but...She told me...that my sister made it out of the camp." His paws were itching as he spoke the words, fighting between the urge to charge out of the camp to go find her right now, and knowing firstly that it could be false information said in delirium, and secondly that without a more clear sense of where she went, searching for her would be incredibly difficult. "Cherrypaw has to make it. We're all that's left. And then...I need to find my sister." His gaze turned back over his shoulder to look at the medicine cat's den. Why was he telling this to this warrior, and not Bogstar? Surely Bogstar and him would need to discuss...this situation soon. "She's all..." He choked up a little as he thought of his parents. He hadn't seen them in the camp, and scent trails were impossible in the overwhelming dog stank of the camp. "All that...I have left..."

(I was thinking Oakpaw would have a brother and sister in apprenticeship to become warriors, who she envies because she wanted to be a warrior. Would you like to play one or both of them?)

(She saw how good of apprentices her siblings were and decided she wouldn’t be enough of a warrior, and turned to medicine when Smallleap (died/retired). She still ‘wants’ to be a warrior but she’s committed to the medicine cat path to avoid failure)

The moment that Twistedpath smelt the Chervil she froze, whirling around to stare at her with as she tried to chew it. "No! Thats not Comfrey, that's Chervile! Chervile is only for infected wounds, not preventing it. We need to save it for later." She corrected immediately, sharply. "If you need help or aren't sure, ask, even in an emergency. If you had chosen something more dangerous you could have hurt her. " Twistedpath scolded before sighing, shaking her head and pawing at the rest of the herbs.
"Here. Chew these up, then put them on the wounds. Only put the Celedine on her eyes and cover it with cobwebs. I'll go and grab the rest of the herbs." She frankly couldn't trust such a new apprentice to find everything and while she was a little irritated, right now she just had to focus on getting the Windclan apprentice better and help her survive. It took a long time for them to finish it up and she was pretty tired, staying up with Cherrypaw until she was too tired to do so, then waking Oakpaw up to keep watch and make sure nothing was changing for the worst.
Which was when two particularly mischievous apprentices made their appearance.
Maplepaw and Pinepaw had woken up before any of the other apprentices just to see what really had happened. Bogstar hadn't made an announcement yet, instead quelling the fears by promising to tell them in the morning after Dawn patrol, when everyone was back in camp, but they had heard rumors that were just too tempting to ignore. They had both been woken up at the Windclan warrior's wailings and when the apprentice had been brought in and after that the rumors spread like wild fire.
"Pssst, Oakpaw," Pinepaw hissed, his green eyes flickering with curiosity as he stared at the Windclan apprentice, lurking outside of the medicine cats den as he waited to hear his sisters grumpy mentor chase them off, like she had often done in the past. Of course the tom was soon shoved into the den, his sister tumbling over her in excitement, eyes wide as she rolled off of Pinepaw, trying to stay as quiet as possible. Oakpaws brother shook off his russet colored fur, licking his singular cream colored paw as he glared at Maplepaw, a she cat who's russet fur was a few shades lighter than her brothers and had more cream on her chest and under belly. "Sorry!" She whispered before they turned to Oakpaw.
"So it's true! Windclans staying here!" "Is it true that two legs took everyone else?" "No way! I heard that it was badgers!" "Badgers? No way, they aren't so scary. They couldn't have hurt them like this." Maplepaw scoffed, unaware that all of Twistedpaths injuries had come from a badger attack, thinking that they were just things to scare kits away.

Oakpaw's eyes shot wide and her mouth stopped chewing as her mentor turned on her immediately with the herb still in her paw. Guilt shot through her as Twistedpath remarked on what she had grabbed and that choosing not to ask in her uncertainty could have really hurt the apprentice. Gulping, she obeyed exactly what her mentor told her to do with the Celedine before backing away and being left with a sense of incompetence, saying nothing and keeping her eyes on her paws as Cherrypaw was finally treated with every herb she needed.
Oakpaw knew she had drained their store of herbs heavily, having needed so many poultices and cobwebs to treat the awful eye and the various claw marks across her sides and back. Oakpaw had been trying to help and didn't want to interrupt her mentor, but she felt the nagging in the back of her mind that she knew she should have checked. Herbs weren't to be played with and she could have ruined the wound for the much worse.
Oakpaw was startled by the hiss of her brother, her eyes lifting from her paws towards the entrance of the den. She quickly checked to see if Twistedpath was paying attention or falling asleep after having waken Oakpaw up since it was her turn to take watch.
Her eyes widened and she hissed quietly at the racket, glancing at Twistedpath again. She quickly stepped towards her siblings, giving Maplepaw a hard push back towards the entrance of the den. She quickly glanced back at Cherrypaw, seeing the apprentice's belabored pelt rising and falling, before stepping closer to her siblings as they began quickly listing rumors that they had been hearing. She took in a breath quietly, trying to handle the onslaught of her siblings eagerness in the midst of her own failure to apply the proper herbs, her mentor's scolding still at the front of her mind.
Oakpaw didn't smile or match her siblings enthusiasm as she finally opened her mouth to speak, the image of Cherrypaw's maimed wound still forefront in her mind as well. "All I know is..." She gulped. "Something terrible happened, and..." She looked for a second time back at Cherrypaw. How much should she say? Was it her place? "I...I don't know what's going on. I don't know what's going to happen." She settled for a mild and avoidant answer to all of the rumors.

Pinepaws ears flattened a little at his sisters hiss, looking sheepish as both he and Maplepaw were herded out of the medicine cats den. They were lucky, though, because Twistedpath was tired enough to not wake up to the small amount of racket that Oakpaws littermates had made while trying to get their sisters attention. Maplepaw let out a tiny whine of complaint as she was pushed, but had the brains to not be loud, because she had been chased out of the den by Twistedpath before.
But she finally plopped down next to Pinepaw, leaning in, ready to eagerly listen to what had actually happened... unfortunately, though, they had gotten a similar answer from Thrushpaw, who was beyond shaken with what he had seen. Maplepaw let out a small whine at that, rolling her eyes and nudging her sister, because if anyone was going to give them a true explanation, it was going to be her. "C'mon Oakpaw, you have to know more than that. I promise we won't tell anyone else, we just want to know what happened and Thrushpaw won't say a word. He's being all antsy about it but bragging he got to go. He's being a frog-brain and we just want to know," Maplepaw whined, her green eyes wide and pleading, head butting her sister gently.
There had to be something wrong, though, because Oakpaw wasn't matching their enthusiasm and Pinepaw nudged Maplepaw away, so she wasn't getting into their sisters face so much. "You seem scared, Oakpaw, are you okay? What happened?" Pinepaw had always been the more level headed of Oakpaws two siblings- not that Maplepaw didn't care for her sister, but she was so excitable that often times her excitement drowned out any kind of observant behavior. Chances were, Maplepaw didn't notice that Oakpaw wasn't handling this well at all, so excited about there being something going on that she didn't even consider her sisters feelings.
That much was obvious, too, because she quickly sobered the moment Pinepaw did. Even if he had been excited to get the gossip, the moment that he saw the somber expression, he calmed down enough to check in on his sister. He peered a little beyond Oakpaw, only able to see the limp lump of fur that Oakpaw and Twistedpath had managed to save for the time being. He hadn't seen injuries like that before, even if all they could see were cobwebs stuck to her pelt.
"Is that really the apprentice?" He asked, sobered by the sight, looking back at Oakpaw with wide and nervous eyes.

Oakpaw couldn't find it in her to even respond much as Pinepaw tried peer pressuring the answer out of her. The wounds of the apprentice, messing up the herbs and being scolded, and the general weight of what Bogstar had just dropped when he reported the whole clan had been eliminated. Something about the weight that was pressing down on her just couldn't be expressed in words, and even though she was struggling to reciprocate their enthusiasm, she was relieved to see her siblings after this task, though she had needed to be near them a moment before realizing she needed a friendly face to start decompressing from this.
Stepping closer to her brother, she adjusted herself to be side by side with him, gazing in towards Cherrypaw, and leaned in on his calmer sibling's shoulder as she was asked if she was doing okay. She gulped, looking over the wounds one by one.
She gave a a slight nod as he asked if Cherrypaw was their Windclan charge. "Bogstar carried her from the Windclan camp," She quietly murmured. "And that warrior was fretting outside the whole time. He's too young to be her father, so maybe he is her brother? Or her mentor? I don't know..." She mewed quietly. "B...but..." She tried to steady her paws as she lifted herself from her brother and took a step forward, angling her neck back to look at her two siblings. "Pinepaw...Maplepaw...I..." Her eyes were filled with fear and her gaze was unquestionably queasy. "W-Windclan has...been totally wiped out. They're what's left..."
Her words trailed off into silence as her empathetic heart reasserted itself, filling her with a low-hanging dread and an intense sadness for the two cats now in their camp, laying bare on her face as her gaze was sucked down to her paws. "And I...I don't know if we...If I...did enough to save her...Twistedpath said I did a bad job..." She mumbled quietly. At least, that was a much as she had taken from the sharp scolding. At least her siblings were here, and they would listen. Pinepaw would at least listen to her feelings.

Pinepaw wrapped his tail around her to comfort his sibling, while Maplepaw looked plain uncomfortable when she found out what actually happened, clearly regretting pushing her sister into answering them. They were quiet for a moment, beyond shocked that an entire clan was wiped out within a day. Was there really something that strong that could do so? Sure, Windclan wasn't the strongest (in the apprentices opinions), but surely they weren't so weak that they could just be wiped out like that. It wasn't something that was easy to think about. The two siblings exchanged glances at the admission, before Pinepaw let out a soft sigh.
"Did Twistedpath actually say that or is that how you feel?" He'd seen how easily Oakpaw beat herself up before- she had said the same thing when she was a warriors apprentice and he was wondering if she was stressing out and trying to be perfect again. "You've only recently started training, and she's kinda prickly. Maybe she didn't mean that you did a bad job? This looks like a super scary situation and maybe she was scared, too." He suggested, not liking how sad his sister seemed to be about all of this, as if this was all her fault.
"But if she actually said it, we'll teach her a lesson," Maplepaw added, fluffing out her fur as if she was genuinely thinking about taking on Oakpaws mentor for being harsh with her. She was always the type to jump into things without thinking, and there truly was a chance that she would march right up to Twistedpath and tell her to stop being so mean to her sister. It wasn't like she hadn't done it before with Oakpaws old mentor, and was subsequently punished by having Elder Duty for a few days instead of doing anything else. Apparently she hadn't learned her lesson, though, because she was already prepared to make the same mistake again just to ensure that her family was alright. Pinepaw scowled at that, reaching over to swat their overly energetic sister, who let out a disgruntled hiss, glaring at him.
"But- really. They're all gone? Does that mean they'll be Shadowclan cats now?" She whispered, trying not to wake up the injured she cat who clearly needed rest.

Oakpaw shook her head as Pinepaw tried to break through the barrier that she was putting up to taking the learning that Twistedpath had tried to provide her with, holding strong to it as a sign of her failure so far as a medicine cat's apprentice.
Of course, that was all she ever felt like with her old mentor. Missing prey, messing up something as simple as the hunter's crouch, nervous about killing a squirrel, picking moss that was too wet...it seemed like anywhere she went, poor quality work worked. She still felt bad for how terrible of an apprentice she had been. She still hadn't apologized to her former mentor.
She gulped and lifted her gaze as Maplepaw seemed to have learned so little from her previous experience chewing out a mentoring warrior. She shook her head, but she couldn't keep the slightest of a smile from coming to her face. Maplepaw, you're just...too protective of your family, huh? "N-no, it isn't her fault, Maplepaw. I did the wrong thing. She was right to tell me what she did." She quietly murmured her assent to a crime that Twistedpath hadn't really meant to put on her.
Her gaze shifted back to dull and somber, the smile fading as Maplepaw spoke of the Windclan cats again. "I...I don't know what's going to happen. I don't know if they can still live in the Windclan camp. It is probably really big for two cats. I don't know what Bogstar is going to do...But Bogstar said they are all gone." It was a grim and a depressing note, something that wasn't really meant for apprentices like them to hear and process so directly. Such mortality was supposed to be...perhaps not absent from their thoughts, but not such a dominating influencing. This had thrust it right under every pawstep.

"Oh. Well. Then that's okay- that's the whole point of us being apprentices. We do things wrong all the time, don't be so worried about it, Oakpaw." Maplepaw decided, giving her sister a friendly push as Pinepaw stared at his siblings for a few moments. His features were completely unreadable for the time being, his tail flicking a little at the thought of his sister not listening, but didn't say anything else as she continue to speak.
"That's so scary," Maplepaw breathed, her ears flatting against her ears, looking over at Cherrypaw once more. If Bogstar said that they were all gone then she was willing to believe it and the thought of that happening was terrifying. All that was left was an injured apprentice that Oakpaw had to watch over and a windlcan warrior that most of the warriors here were reluctant to let him sleep in the warriors den. That... was it and no one else. None of the other apprentices that she had sparred with during gatherings, no more warriors that she had attempted to start fights with from time to time, no... more Windclan.
"What if the dogs come here next?" She fretted while Pinepaw shook his head immediately. "That's not going to happen, Maplepaw. We have a lot more cover here, where we can hide. I don't think any big old dogs would be able to even get to our camp," He assured them, before turning his attention back to Cherrypaw. "Is that apprentice even alive?" He breathed, worried, because most of the she cat was blocked from his view, and he couldn't telll if she was or not. He didn't smell death in the Medicine cats den- the last leaf barebefore when there were some cases of green cough- so at least that was a little bit better than anything.
She wasn't dead yet, at least.

Oakpaw tried not to show any response to her sister as she, at least within the eyes of Oakpaw, downplayed the way that she was feeling about her failures. She couldn't fault Maplepaw for always trying to make the best of any situation, to do whatever she could to absolve Oakpaw of responsibility. Still, she wouldn't respond much, verbally or nonverbally as her sister gave her an amicable push to emphasize her point.
Her gaze fixed once again on Cherrypaw as her sister asked whether the dogs could end up here. Pinepaw was quick to dismiss the idea, citing why the dogs should have a hard time getting to them, but Oakpaw...she was left to wonder. One day ago, she would have said there wasn't a chance in Starclan dogs could have come and crushed an entire clan beneath their filthy paws.
She tried to shake the thought from her head with a physical shake of her head. She tried focusing in on the last question, Cherrypaw's state filling her mind again. "She...she is still breathing. If I hadn't messed up, maybe Twistedpath could have stitched her wounds up faster." There she went again--everything was her fault. "I need to watch her for the rest of the night..." She murmured, glancing to the side towards her two siblings. She gulped, glancing for a moment to the apprentice's den, and then back to them.
"I...I don't suppose...you would..." She looked back down at her paws. She could really use her siblings right now, and even if they were just silent and together, she would feel just a little safer. But...guilt started clawing at her for even suggesting it. It was getting cold now that they were reaching towards the end of Leaf-fall. She couldn't ask them to stick with her, especially when the three of them couldn't cram into the den to bunch up together, as limited as the space in Twistedpath's den was. N-no, I have to start growing up. I can't keep leaning on them to get me out of everything.
"N-never mind. I...S-sorry for...I didn't meant to scare you," She quickly shifted the subject. "I don't know what's going to happen, but I hope that...That we can at least protect her from them." She meowed with certainty in her voice as she eyed Cherrypaw."Twistedpath is a really good medicine cat," She murmured quietly. "So I'm hoping that she'll be okay. That she will...recover." She mumbled the last word. Knowing how bad her head wound was, the bite around her eye leaving its terrible imprint, she struggled to imagine a complete recovery. She didn't want to say this though, to give it any sort of legitimacy.

Maplepaw rolled her eyes the moment that her sister didn't answer, knowing at this point that Oakpaw was still too busy blaming herself, ignoring the look that Pinepaw was giving her as she did so. Instead she just focused on the apprentice that was patched up in the medicine cats den. "Oh, just stop it, Oakpaw. Her wounds are bad enough, she wasn't going to wake up any earlier just because you made one mistake," Maplepaw snapped, her tail lashing for a moment, and Pinepaw hissed immediately at her sister when she snapped at Oakpaw.
For how protective she was over her littermates, she also didn't have much patience for them either, and without a doubt was the one who was always starting some kind of fight because she didn't have much patience for anyone. It was something that her mentor had been trying to work on, they had been arguing on it for the past moon, and while her temper had gotten a bit better but it still wasn't the best. "Maplepaw- this isn't the time to do this. You can't force Oakpaw to feel in a way that you want her to feel," Pinepaw pointed out, and Maplepaw let out a small growl of complaint at that, clearly not agreeing with him and huffing a little but settling down again.
Their brother gave a shrug at the apology. "We were the ones who wanted to know what was going on," The young apprentice pointed out, gently head butting Oakpaw, looking over at the apprentice. "I hope that she'll wake up soon," He commented, eyes focused on the she cat for a few moments, settling down on his haunches and watching Cherrypaw. He hummed a little when she pointed out that Twistedpath was a good medicine cat, so Cherrypaw was going to survive, but he wasn't fully sure if she would fully recover. With whatever happened to Twistedpath, she never fully recovered, so he couldn't help but wonder if Cherrypaw would be in a similar situation. He didn't say that, though, smart enough to keep his own feelings to himself like he often did even with how young he was. He'd always been a bit more reserved than his siblings, showed less emotions but generally came off as more laid back even if he had just found out his preferences being keeping his own emotions to himself.
"Well, we'll learn more in the morning, when Bogstar makes his announcement. Maybe we can show this apprentice around when she wakes up. I don't think that Bogstar would just chase them out. I'll bet he's gonna let them stay here and join Shadowclan." Pinepaw continued on, not really giving Maplepaw a chance to really speak anymore, since she was already showing her irritation and getting Oakpaw more upset wasn't going to help anyone. So he simply spoke above Maplepaw and interrupted her the couple of times she opened her mouth, not willing to let her speak until her tail stopped lashing.
He froze for a moment when he heard movement within the den, Twistedpath stirring for a few moments, holding his breath until the medicine cat settled back down into her nest. She was always a restless sleeper- but that wasn't something that Pinepaw would know.

Oakpaw flinched as their sister snapped at her, a fiery reaction that she wasn't ready for, even if she should have been prepared for such a reaction based on knowing her siblings. It hurt to hear her sibling say, both having her own feelings of failure invalidated, and leaving her feeling that her contribution didn't mean anything. She struggled to keep from slipping into a more negative mindset as her brother tried to course-correct from where Maplepaw had led Oakpaw.
As Pinepaw headbuttered her, Oakpaw tried to paint a smile over her face, leaning down and rubbing her cheek against her brother's and giving a quiet purr of affection. She nodded in agreement, settling down beside him and trying to push her own failure and lack of usefulness to the back of her head as Pinepaw refocused on Cherrypaw. "I don't think we can lose another Windclan cat. There are only two left..." She sighed quietly, her voice dripping with a mixture of awe at the elimination of the clan and heartbreak for the two cats who were leftover. She tried to imagine losing Maplepaw, Pinepaw, Twistedpath, Bogstar, Shadepelt...almost everyone...but she had to stop before it upset her even more. Even thinking about that sort of pain was upsetting, and she buried her muzzle into Pinepaw's shoulder.
She froze alongside him as Twistedpath seemed to stir, realizing they had triggered the medicine cat's uneasy, easily breakable sleeping pattern. It beehoved them to stop speaking now, because if they disturbed her rest again she was going to know it wasn't the wind. She sighed very quietly once the noise in the den settled down, with a few extra seconds afterwards for safety.
She pulled herself away from the warmth of her sibling, as much as she didn't want to. It was the worst part of becoming the medicine cat's apprentice, and she hadn't told anyone how she felt about it. Not getting to curl up and sleep in the safety and warmth of her littermates was an isolating experience which left her feeling cold and lonely every night. As much as she missed it, she couldn't say anything. She had made this choice, and she couldn't put that on her siblings' shoulders. They needed to be at their best and most unburdened, and her emotions were only going to serve to hamper that. She could handle being silent, if it was for their sakes.
"We'll find out tomorrow," She whispered to them in a hushed tone, truly looking forward to some understanding that would be coming their way the next day. Knowing what was going to happen and having some concrete plans would be really helpful.

(So are you a grad student since you have a thesis? Is it okay if I ask? I'll be going into grad school within the year *hopefully* so I'm kinda curious!)
Early the next morning, right after Dawn patrol made it back to the camp and any one who had decided to hunt on their own returned, Bogstar called the clan together.
Stormpelt wasn't particularly happy about the time that the meeting was called, Bogstars yowl loud enough to wake her up from her position right near the entrance of the warriors den, tiredly wandering out and looking over at Bogstar, who was standing on the lowest branch over the roots of his own den. He was standing tall, and any worry that he surely was feeling about this entire situation couldn't be found on his neutral features, waiting for his clanmates to make it over and around the tree. Thrushpaw, who had popped his head into the Medicine cats den to check on Cherrypaw and was ran out by Twistedpath after a few moments, was sitting close to his mentor with wide and nervous eyes.
Despite the fact that he was the most senior apprentice, he was clearly more shaken than the others, fur bristling just a little and it was obvious that seeing the carnage had affected him badly. Poor kit, she thought with a sigh, padding over to her half brother and settling down next to him and his mentor, simply flicking her ear in greeting because this wasn't a time to talk, not when Bogstar had an announcement to make.
Pinepaw and Maplepaw were stumbling out of the den, too, looking more tired than they should be considering they weren't supposed to have any night time training. Of course they went to sit by Oakpaw, Maplepaw yawning and settling her chin on her paws until Bogstar started to speak. It wasn't as interesting, after all, because they had gotten information from Oakpaw the night before and they knew that Bogstar was going to talk about.
"As you may know, we have two Windclan cats within our camp," He started, only stopping when unhappy mutters went throughout the camp, and for good reason. No clan was comfortable with an enemy clan cat staying within their ranks, they had every right to be wary of this. "I expect you to stop and listen," He added wryly, looking over his clanmates for a moment before sighing. "Windclan was attacked by a pack of dogs large enough to kill all of the clan cats but two, as far as we know. Jasminefur," He tail twitched towards the cat that was sitting near the roots and waited for him to climb up the branch before continuing.
"Is one of the survivors, and he would like to speak. We need to know what happened so we can be prepared if it happens to us. We are neighbors to Windclan and the dogs could very well wander into our own territory.
