Norman Walters
Norman glanced down at the pile of things he had in his hands. A towel, some hand towels, a box or two of soap, an extra, unopened pack of toothbrushes, some travel sized deodorants, toothpastes, and other hygiene essentials. Okay yeah, maybe he could use some help carrying all of this. Sighing, Norman nodded and gave the smaller stuff to Time. “Yeah, I guess I could use some help, thanks,” Norman told him, getting back up to his feet as he dusted off his clothing and gestured for Time to head back out of the bathroom. This turned out to be a mistake. As soon as Norman urged Time back out of the bathroom, a large walking stick instantly sprung out from just out of sight. “Who are you?” Came a voice from outside the room. Ah yes, and there was Lukas. Squeezing his way past Time and into the front of the doorway where their path was blocked by a walking stick. “Woah, Lukas, put the stick down before you stab someone with it, it’s just me, your pal Norman,” Norman explained quickly, trying to defuse the situation. Lukas didn’t move the stick. “Who’s with you?”Norman glanced over at Time. Right, how was he going to play this? “This is Time, he’s...” Norman internally swore. Lukas knew all his work friends and he knew about his non work friends too. He could always tell him the truth, however something told him that Lukas might have some objections to “this is Time, he’s some random homeless guy that I found in a bar and decided to let crash at my place until he gets back on his feet.” So Norman did what he does best and made everything worse by saying the first thing that came to mind. “He’s my boyfriend,” Norman explained causally, sending Time a look that he hoped Time understood as “just go with it, I’ll explain later.”

It was completely fair of TJ to say that he didn't know what was around here. The whole point was trying to show him places he didn't know, right? Help him get used to this new area. To be honest, she should've done some planning and some research to come up with some fun activities for the two of them. In fact, Val made a mental note to do that next time. Plan something nice, or if he didn't want to go out anywhere, at least buy some more food so she could cook something for him.
She didn't consider herself much of a cook, but she could at least make something slightly edible.
As it was, though, TJ did seem to have an idea of something he wanted to do, and at the suggestion Val's face brightened a little, both with recognition that she could in fact oblige his request, and with a little bit of relief that he had something he wanted to do. While she liked hanging out with him, he deserved a better evening than just sitting petting her cat. An arcade seemed like a great suggestion
"Actually, yeah!" Val replied "I took Norman there once and it got pretty competitive. We don't talk about it."
They'd been working on a case and they'd had no choice but to use Val's apartment to meet about the case outside of work. Norman and Hazel were one of the few members of the 99 she was willing to allow into her apartment, and now TJ was also one of them. She didn't like sharing too much about herself, and the space in which she lived felt too intimate to her. Full of little things that said too much about her, all her personal things.
Besides, TJ had said he liked getting to know her. That was cute, but maybe a little much for her. She felt like she'd told him too much already without even meaning to. He had a way of making her want to talk, making her feel like it was safe to talk about stuff. But she didn't feel ready for that yet, and she'd rather get to know him. Maybe if they left her house and went somewhere else it would feel like more mutual territory, and she'd feel more secure. It'd be easier to find out more about TJ too.
After they'd worked on the case they'd went down to the arcade to blow off some steam, try to think about something else for once, but that had been a fatal mistake. Both of them were far too competitive and it may or may not have ended with them both getting thrown out. But the ban was lifted by now, she was pretty sure.
"Come on, it's not far," she suggested with a nod towards the doorway "and it'll be open a while yet."
And with that, it wasn't long before Val and TJ headed out of the apartment - but not before saying her goodbyes to Cleo and making sure the cat had enough food to last her until Val would get home.
_______
Val wasn't lying when she said it wasn't far, there was one maybe only a five minutes' walk from her place. It was a pretty normal-looking arcade; one could see the colourful lights of the games from the street.
"This place has been around as long as I've lived here, and I know for a fact probably a lot longer. It's stayed open, but only barely." she explained as they headed inside.
The place still had some of the older, more vintage games. It was immediately evident, though, that it had turned to other strategies to try to stay open, too. As well as those older games, the place had stuff like skeeball and Whac-A-Mole and dance games. All the usual kind of stuff arcades did to stay open after home consoles.
There were also snacks and drinks, but since Val had gleaned since TJ joined the precinct that he had some dietary requirements, she wasn't 100% sure how many of the snack foods he could actually eat. If he wanted food, there had to be something he could eat; maybe they could ask.
"Alright, the arcade is your oyster." Val said with a sweep of her arm "what's your first stop?"

Callie chuckled a little at Grace's words about the fact that nobody would believe they were detectives if Callie told them what happened at work. There was...an awful lot of truth in that to be entirely honest.
"I question every day whether any of us should be detectives," Callie shrugged "but we are, for better or worse."
The teasing about TJ and the playful nudge caused the blond to wave off her friend with a laugh.
"You're not wrong. Objectively, he's pretty cute. I think one or two of the others in the precinct have their eyes on him though, and he's not really my type. He's not as cute as you anyway," Callie joked
Grace was cute, or at least Callie thought so. Talking to her was easy, and while she adored Tortie, the two of them bounced off one another a little too much. Having Grace's company was, while fun, a little more calming and less chaotic.
"I don't believe that," Callie chuckled at Grace's comment about her job not being as exciting as Callie's, but she was glad to hear that Noah was doing well. Puppies made everything better, too, so it was always nice when a story involved those.
"I don't think you can have too many dogs, so I think he's making the right move," Callie replied
She took another sip of her drink before realising the two of them should probably come up with some kind of actual plan for their night. She could enjoy Grace's company anywhere, but it was probably worth deciding what they wanted to do.
"So, once we finish our drinks here, I wondered if there was anywhere in particular you wanted to go? Anything you wanted to do? I don't mind staying here for a while and just chatting if you wanted."

TJ Kaminski
It had been way too long since TJ had been to an arcade. ... By that he meant it had been a little over a week, but that was still way too long, okay? Besides he had never been to this arcade before so this was all pretty exciting if he did say so himself. Eyes going wide, TJ took in the sights of the old arcade. Places like this were going out style by now and that was probably one of the biggest shames of his lifetime, TJ enjoyed all the new kinds of gaming too, like video games and computer games, however his personal favorite would always be the retro arcade games. Letting out a small, excited gasp, TJ grabbed Val by the hand and led her in. “This place has everything!” He explained excitedly. “They have Pac-Man-“ TJ pointed over to the Pac-Man game, dragging Val along. “Oh, and look! They have Donkey Kong!” TJ dragged Val off to see that one next. ”Look-look-look, they’ve got Space Attack! I loved that game as a kid!” As well as an adult but he didn’t need to get into that. TJ continued to drag Val along to point out some of his other favorite arcade games for awhile before stopping as he caught sight of something through the corner of his eyes. Backing up, TJ’s eyes landed on a game in the back and he let out a gasp. “Dance Dance Revolution! Val, they’ve got Dance Dance Revolution!” He said, turning to look over at Val with wide, excited eyed as he grabbed her hands again. “Come on, we’ve got to play it,” he told her eagerly.

After everything Norman had done for Time, the least he could do was help out with gathering everything. He was grateful that Norman was actually letting him help, and when he was handed some of the items that had been gathered up, he made sure to hold on to them firmly. It would be his luck to end up dropping something and he wanted to avoid that as much as he could.
In the end, he did end up dropping a few things, but for once it wasn’t because he was just a failure of a person, it was because he had been rightfully startled.
Before he even knew it he was greeted by the sight of a walking stick that meant business and was now blocking their pathway out of the bathroom. A voice soon followed, and Time couldn’t help but think that they were being targeted by the house’s human version of a guard dog.
Time’s first instinct was to run, but he knew if he did that he would just end up plowing straight into the walking stick and hurting himself more than anything. There was also the instinct to face this new person head on and attempt to get the upperhand in a fight, but Time knew he wouldn’t be able to win. His parents had made sure to teach him a lot on how to win fights and how to get out of sticky situations like this, but he had never been good at it. He had always been too slow or too anxious to make a move when he had the chance, and even now with his instincts telling him he could go for it, he knew he would end up letting his natural anxiety take over. There was no sense in even trying something like that.
He did what he could to take a step back, quiet as he let Norman try to work things out. He planned on not saying anything on the off chance that, if he did, he’d just make things worse, but that plan was thrown out the window the moment Norman came up with the lie that Time was his boyfriend.
Oh great.
Time was sure his face was as red as his hair by the way it burned. He sent a wide-eyed glance toward Norman, so many things wanting to come out and be said, but he swallowed them back down, registering what the look on Norman’s own face meant.
He could go along with this. Right? Probably not. Deep breaths, you can do this, you got this…
”Y-yeah. It’s...it’s a recent thing. Didn’t plan on telling anybody so soon, but, uh,” he suppressed the urge to offer an awkward chuckle in the middle of that, ”ya know, cat’s outta the bag now.” Oh, he sucked at this, but he supposed it was worth a shot.

For as much as Grace teased Callie about her profession as a detective and what all went on in the other woman’s workspace, Grace believed in Callie and trusted that she did her job well. If she didn’t then Brooklyn would be a lot worse of a place than it was, and there was also the fact that if Callie wasn’t doing her job Noah would have brought it up at some point. Her brother wasn’t a detective, clearly, but he worked in close enough proximity to Callie that Grace was sure she would have heard of any terrible mishaps if something were wrong.
News like this, though, wasn’t something her brother would be able to pass on to her. He could have found out about the new detective, that wouldn’t be hard, but that would have been where Noah’s knowledge ended. He wouldn’t know about the finer details on this new guy, such as how cute he was and who else had their eyes on him.
Grace was about to make her own comment, but stopped when she heard Callie add in the comment about how Grace herself was cuter than this new detective. Usually comments like that wouldn’t get under her skin and cause her to grow warm. Grace never her problems with her self esteem when it came to physical appearance, she was rather confident in her looks, and getting comments from people telling her she looked good wasn’t out of the ordinary. She was used to those compliments, but hearing it from Callie stopped her momentarily and she had to glance down at her drink to hopefully hide the way her face had flushed. ”I’m sure he’s no match for you in the looks department, either.” Of course, Grace had no idea what this guy looked like, but as of lately she was finding it hard to think of somebody as more attractive than Callie.
Between all the conversation, Grace hadn’t realized she had no plans for the night beyond hanging out with Callie. Sitting here and drinking the night away with her friend wasn’t a bad idea, but there were so many other things they could also do. If Grace wanted to sit around and idly chitchat while they drank then she would have suggested they just go back to her place, but she wanted a night out on the town, a night that had a little bit more excitement to it than just this. ”I don’t have any particular ideas,” she replied with a shrug. ”Did you have anything in mind?” If Callie didn’t then Grace was sure she could think of something. Brooklyn was full of exciting nightlife. Their options were limitless here, especially since Grace knew her way around the city.

It was a good thing Lukas couldn’t see facial expressions because the one Norman was giving Time would’ve blown their cover immediately. Really, that’s what he was going with? That was so un-organic that Whole Foods wouldn’t sell it even if you put some dumb label on it like “separation is natural” or something. Yeah separation was natural all right, and as soon as they left his mom’s house, Norman was gonna separate from his new fake boyfriend. Couldn’t believe he was fake dating his guy. However he had dug himself a hole by now and he had to keep it up. ”Yeah, but don’t tell anyone yet, including mom, okay?” Norman asked, looking Lukas over. Lukas didn’t lower the stick yet. “Why not?”“Because-“ Norman started, trying to think up a reason on the top of his head. “Because well, you know my track record, I don’t want mom and my brothers to worry or anything, you know how they get,” he explained. There was a pause when then Lukas slowly began to lower the stick. “Fine,” he said and Norman let out a small sigh of relief. “You’re name is really Time?” Lukas asked, turning his attention towards Time. “That’s a weird name,” he added bluntly.

Time kept himself quiet. It wasn't hard to do, it wasn't like he was a naturally chatty person or anything, but he knew if he dared say anything out of line then he was bound to mess something up. This was clearly not a situation in which something needed to be messed up. He was already in the pickle of fake dating Norman now, and that was going to be hard enough for him to play along with and make it seem like the natural truth. Time had never actually dated anybody before, he had absolutely no experience in this realm of reality. Sure, he had had a few odd crushes here and there, but as far as an actual relationship went, he had nothing.
Yeah, this was going to be fun.
He had never been so relieved to hear the whole 'your name is really Time' question in his life. It had never bothered him, had just been something he had grown used to over the years, but this was the first time he literally felt himself loosen up tension that had been building up in his muscles at the question. "Yeah, I get that a lot," he replied easily. At least this was something he could handle. "Weird names just run in the family, it's kinda our thing I guess."

Good, Lukas was letting the conversation go. ”How is it spelled? Time like the clock or Thyme like the herb?” Lukas asked, arms folded, though his voice was no longer hostile, simply curious. Content to let the two of them talk, Norman gathered up anything else they might need and stepped out of the bathroom. “Why were you two in the bathroom?” Lukas asked and Norman paused again, glancing down at all the stuff he was holding. “I was showing Time where the bet broom is, he’s never been here before and all,” Norman lied lightly. Lukas followed him, waiting for Time to come as well. “Alright, new question, why are you here? You never bring your boyfriends to the house,” Lukas questioned. Norman glared over at him, even though he knew Lukas couldn’t see. “I don’t know, why are you interrogating me so much, huh?” Norman snapped back, gesturing for Time to hurry up. “Listen, we were out and about and I remembered I left some stuff here and came to get it, Time was with me, it’s not a big deal,” he said simply. Honestly, he should’ve just come alone and brought all this stuff back for Time or something, it would have been easier than dealing with all of this.

Again, he was used to being asked questions like this. This wasn't the first time he had to spell his name to avoid confusion. He could handle a conversation that took this particular route.
"Like the clock," he answered simply. He was prepared to answer anything more, but it seemed like the conversation had veered back to one just between Norman and Lukas. Time could handle that. He used this as a chance to lean down and pick up the few things he had dropped from being startled earlier, making sure they were extra secure on the off chance that a second surprise startle him.
Once he had everything he had dropped he followed the two on out of the bathroom, listening to what they had to say just in case he was brought back into the conversation. Listening in did make him briefly wonder just how many boyfriends Norman had had, though Time knew that was none of his business and he had no reason to straight up ask the other man about. He wasn't even sure why he was suddenly so curious to know more about Norman's dating life - he could probably chalk the curiosity up to something as simple as wanting to know what Norman's other boyfriends were like so that he could get an idea on how he should act when playing this game of pretend; he wasn't going to act just like Norman's exes, they were exes for a reason, but he needed some sort of reference to think on if he was going to pull this off.

Norman Walters “I’m not saying it’s a big deal, I’m just saying it’s a little weird given your track record,” Lukas told him and Norman rolled his eyes, stopping once they got to the stairs to help Lukas down them. “What’s they supposed to mean?” Norman asked with an annoyed grunt. ”Also watch out, stairs,” he added as Lukas grabbed hold of his arm and stepped back a little to let Norman lead him down the stairs. “What I mean is that your past boyfriends have all been jacka-aaowe!“ Norman poked him in the ribs and Lukas swatted vaguely in his direction. “Stop that,” he ordered. Norman huffed a little. “Then stop insulting my impeccable taste in men, especially with Time here, that’s rude,” he told Lukas, glancing back towards Time for a minute to make sure he was following. Lukas had a point that not all of Norman’s passed flames had exactly been good guys. Mortimer was a jerk. So was Joseph. Xander was another one. Oh and then there was...Okay basically the point was that so far, Norman hadn’t had a great track record and usually he didn’t bring them around here because of that fact and the fact that his mother and Lukas were both well trained in the art of “beating people up.” But that was still no reason to be rude about his taste in men. “Alright, sorry, listen all I was saying is that I think it’s a good sign that you felt comfortable enough to bring Time here,” Lukas explained once they got to the bottom of the stairs. “Don’t let him fool you, Time, this one’s not as tough as he acts,” Lukas added jokingly ad he ruffled Norman’s hair.

Arcades hadn't been a huge part of Val's childhood, but she had certainly kind of enjoyed them in her teenage years after she left Scarsdale. Not as much as TJ though, something that immediately became apparent to her.
She couldn't help a small smile (a very rare thing) tugging at the corner of her mouth when she saw how excited TJ was about this whole thing. The hand-grabbing was also something that took Val by surprise, not just because of its suddenness but because she didn't know how to react to the fact that it felt like her palm was humming with electricity. Plus she was kind of silently praying her palms weren't sweaty because that wasn't cool, right?
Before she even had time to do anything about the holding-hands situation, TJ was pulling her from game to game, Val letting out a small surprised sound the first time. Somehow this guy just really seemed to know how to catch her off-guard.
She was good friends with Norman, sure, but the two of them were both such guarded people. They were both just content with the kind of relationship where neither of them asked questions. That made Val feel secure, even if it meant that neither of them really talked about feelings or anything like that. Even though Val wasn't interested in that kind of thing, she was also aware that it was something she needed.
TJ's excitable nature, optimistic outlook and love for fun all caught Val off her guard. He had a way of breaking down her walls in a way that scared her a little bit.
Suddenly, though, a particular game caught TJ's attention, and now he was asking her to play Dance Dance Revolution with him. She stood speechless for a moment, almost stuttering a little as she went into her next words.
"Oh, I don't- I don't dance," she answered, holding her palms up and even trying to stifle a slightly nervous laugh.
She could in fact dance, she just chose not to in general. Not in public, and especially not if people were watching. She could dance at a party, when everyone else was dancing and nobody paid attention to what other people were doing.
But this? This she didn't do.

According to Lukas all of Norman’s past boyfriends had been straight up jerks. Noted.
Time didn’t think of himself as a jerk, not like it really mattered since he wasn’t actually dating Norman and never would - they were just roommates for now who would probably just end up becoming a duo of unlikely friends or something like that once Time had enough stability and money to move out to his own place. Point was, Time was a lot of things, but he didn’t quite think ‘jerk’ was one of those things. He wasn’t a great guy, but at least he tried his best to be kind to others and not anger somebody. Time was just trying to live his life in a way that left him in the shadows for the most part, somebody that wasn’t exactly noticed unless he chose to be noticed. Being a jerk wouldn’t get that job done.
While he was willing to take on the acting role of Norman’s boyfriend, he wasn’t going to let himself fall into the pattern of a jerk. That’s where he was going to be different from Norman’s exes.
Listening to what Lukas had to say, Time couldn't help but smile faintly. ”I can believe that.” Norman had actually been pretty sweet and kind to Time, compassionate and helpful as well. Time would go so far as to say that Norman had been more on the side of stupidly compassionate considering he had allowed a homeless man he knew nothing about to stay at his place, but he wasn’t going to bring that up. ”I mean, even the toughest of people have their soft spots.” If Time hadn’t already been aware of Norman’s softer side he would have believed something was at least there. If people like his own family had soft spots for certain things, then anybody, no matter how tough, had their own particular soft spot, and it was already clear to Time that Norman was soft to people in need, and that alone spoke a lot about Norman’s character.

Pausing when Val let go of his hand, TJ looked back over towards her. “You don’t dance?” He repeated. He could see that, sort of. Val was kind of like Norman, two tough to dance. However if there was anything that TJ was really good at, it was annoying even the toughest of people until they cracked and danced with him. If that was some kind of Olympic sport, TJ would be the ten year champion. “Oh come on, are you sure you don’t want to go up against this?-“ Instantly TJ started dancing in front of her, pulling out some of the oldest moves in the weird TJ dance book. Such as the “wiggle your arms and act like you’re pulling something back” Or the “moonwalk with a groove” Or the “he wasn’t sure what to call this but his body was moving” Smirking as he danced in front of Val, he looked over at her. “Come on, you know you wanna join in,” he told her, wiggling his body around like some kind of tased otter. “Unless you’re scared you’ll lose,” TJ added mischievously. “After all, who can really beat all this?” He asked, gesturing to himself as he danced around in front of her. It was a good thing arcades were pretty dead by now or else even more people would have to witness this travesty.

Yeah he really should’ve just left Time in the car or something like that. Maybe then he would’ve been spared this entire conversation. “Don’t listen to him, I’m plenty tough,” Norman retorted one response, punching Lukas in the shoulder as if to prove it. Lukas didn’t even move. “Yeah, you’re like a little dog with severe little dog syndrome,” Lukas replies, ruffling up his hair a little more as he walked towards the kitchen. “Are you two going to stay until Hazel gets back?” He asked idly. “I could order some food or-“ before he could continue, Norman interrupted quickly. “NO-“ okay that was a little loud. “Er, no thanks, Lukas,” Norman corrected himself out, clearing his throat. “I think Time and I will just leave now, we’ll catch you around though,” he added and Lukas let out a “hmm” in response. Norman shook his head a little and ignored it. It was already bad enough that Lukas had caught them and Norman had to lie on the spot, the last thing he wanted was to bring his mother into this lie. Besides, Hazel would be a lot harder to trick than Lukas was. Turning his attention to Time, Norman gestured his head towards the door. “Ready to go?”

While he had to admit that Norman’s rejection to stay for longer was a little loud, Time was relieved that they were about to leave. Lukas seemed like a really good person, but under these current circumstances Time wasn’t sure he wanted to stick around and see where the conversation led. He knew if they had to keep this up he was going to eventually run himself right into a trap and be caught in the lie that he was trying to preserve for Norman’s sake.
As Norman gestured for the door, Time offered Lukas a quick wave with his free hand - not that the other man could see it or anything though. ”Yeah, I’m ready when you are,” he responded with a nod. ”And, uh, it was nice meeting you,” he called over to Lukas, not wanting to come off as standoffish or rude, especially when he did think Lukas was a nice person, it was just that they had met under some wrong circumstances and Time would rather get out of the situation now than stay and get himself into trouble.

Norman waited until everyone had said their goodbyes and left the house before he let out a breath he didn’t know he had been holding. “Well that was something,” he mused out loud, shaking his head a little. Lukas could be intense at times, and though Norman knew there had been a chance of running into him while there, he still hadn’t expected it to go that way. ...Speaking of which. Clearing his throat, Norman looked back over towards Time. “Hey uh, also, sorry for...for kinda throwing you under the bus in there, you know with the uh...with the whole ‘boyfriend’ thing...” he apologized as he ran a hand through his curly ginger hair, looking down at the ground. He figured they would have to talk about it a little. “But don’t worry!” Norman added quickly. “We can fake break up anytime and then you’re off the hook,” he added, gesturing around slightly with his hands.

Yeah, that had been something alright.
The experience wasn't all that bad, and Time was sure if he got to know Lukas then he wouldn't feel as awkward. There was also the whole dating thing Norman had come up with on the spot that made things awkward as well, but beyond that Time was sure he could have a better interaction when things weren't so foreign and nerve-wracking. It was a bit hard for Time to not be nervous, but he could handle some situations better than others.
Speaking of situations that needed to be handled...
As Norman spoke up he turned his bi-colored gaze toward the other man, taking a moment to process his words before finally responding. "Hey, it's fine, sometimes you just...you just gotta pull something like that." There was a part of Time that was curious to know how things would have went down had the whole 'we're dating' card had not been pulled, but that was something to think about at a later time.
Fake breaking up made sense, but Time did have one pretty big con for that idea. "I suppose we could, but if we did that, wouldn't it be weird for me to still live with you? I mean, I'd probably need my own place before we did that, and I'm not sure how long it would take for me to do that..." Getting a place to buy or even rent took a lot of time and saving up, and as it was now Time had no money to his name and only a few basic necessities that he was essentially only borrowing until he could afford his own. He didn't plan on bumming off Norman for much longer, but getting his own place wasn't going to be a quick and easy thing that could be done in just a few days, weeks, or even months.

Norman paused in his steps, thinking over Time’s words. On one hand, if Lukas kept this to himself, maybe they could avoid the whole “everyone else finding out” thing and then it wouldn’t be a problem to fake break up with Time since it would only be for Lukas’ benefit. However that was under the assumption that he could keep his mouth shut when talking to their mother and Norman knew better than that, and if Hazel found out, then eventually his brothers would find out and by then Norman would be knee deep in a lie that he couldn’t get out of and that’s wouldn’t work out in his favor at all. Ah dang it, Time was right. “Okay, I guess that’s true, hope you don’t mind fake dating me a little while longer then,” he responded, glancing over towards Time.

This certainly wasn’t something Time had expected. He hadn’t expected to be taken in by some random guy he had met at a gay bar, but he supposed that was just one of the many things that could happen when sneaking into a gay bar and trying to not be noticed or kicked out. Of course, he also didn’t expect to be putting up the ruse that he and Norman were now fake dating, but he supposed it was something he could at least try to do. Lying about this wouldn’t be the worst thing he could do, or the worst thing he had ever done for that matter.
Though that did bring up even more questions.
”So, uh, should we...should we come up with a backstory...or?” People were bound to ask questions, and to make this lie believable they both had to be on the same wavelength here. They couldn’t have two completely different stories on how they met and everything that led up to this one particular moment. Maybe Time was pushing this whole ordeal a bit too much, but he didn’t want to mess it up, and his anxieties weren’t going to let him sit around and at least not ask Norman about these things.

Norman mulled over this for a moment or so. Ideally they just wouldn’t talk about this at all with anyone, however even he could realize that that wouldn’t work out in the long term events of it all. It would be best if they simply just got a backstory over with. Honestly it was a good thing that Time was here because without him, Norman would have just winged the entire thing and that always seemed to backfire on him unless he was really on top of things. “Alright, a backstory, yeah I guess we could do that,” Norman agreed, nodding his head. “To start with, how did we meet? I guess we could just keep the actual way that we met if we wanted, but if we did and this somehow got back to Ives- or even worse, Tortie, they could blow our cover pretty easily, I’d say we should pretend like we’ve met before the whole gay bar thing but seeing each other again that night, made us realize how we felt and decided to give the relationship a try,” he offered, going over possible ideas. “I think we could weasel that backstory in even if Ives and Tortie find out.”

Time was probably just being way too anxious about all this. They probably didn’t need some kind of made up story on how they had met and everything, but Time’s anxieties were getting the better of him and he couldn’t just go around with no solid story, especially if somebody asked. He supposed he could give them the real story on how they had met, but something about telling people they had met at a gay bar after some other guy had been antagonizing him just didn’t sit right with him.
It seemed like Norman was on the same track, or on a slightly different track but the paths had merged into something to where they were both on the same track of not wanting to say they had first initially met at the gay bar. Saying they had known each other before that moment worked a lot better for Time than the actual truth, and it wasn’t like he really had to lie for this to work out.
He nodded his agreement. ”Yeah, that makes sense. I like that.” A smile managed to pull at Time’s lips for a brief moment as he glanced over at Norman. ”It’s not too far out there, and not really stretching the truth too much,” he added, feeling rather content with the idea Norman had come up with for this.

Honestly Norman never thought he would find himself in another fake dating situation, yet here he was. How many times had he done this by now? That once with that one guy when Norman had broken into his house. That was a crazy story, however in his defense, he thought the house was both empty and haunted so he wasn’t really expecting some guy to live there. The other time had been less eventful. Wow, if he had a nickel for every time he found himself in a fake dating scenario, he would have 3 nickels, which wasn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened three times. Anyways. Nodding along, Norman clapped his hands together. “Right, this’ll work, and then when enough time has passed we’ll just fake break up and hopefully only like...a very small handful of people will actually have to know we’re dating...fake dating,” Norman said. “Because like, I don’t need my work finding out about this, or my friends, or my brothers, but I can handle some people thinking we’re dating,” he continued. So long as it didn’t last long, it would be fine. “Anyways, come on, we still need to hit the mall for clothes and stuff.”

Right. Right, all of this made sense. Time didn’t know anything about fake dating, or dating in general, but what Norman was saying made sense to him. It seemed like to make this work there were only a few people that could even know they were “dating”, which Time supposed to less people to think that the less that would come out of a fake breakup and all that. The last thing he needed was to cause some sort of huge family drama for Norman or something. He probably had enough to deal with as it was. If anything, at least Time’s family wouldn’t get dragged into any of this, so all he had to worry about was keeping this a secret from most of Norman’s. He could do that.
With everything that had happened, Time had forgotten about picking him up some clothes. ”Right.” He looked around as if making sure the coast was clear before allowing himself to dive back down into his thoughts. He didn’t really know his way around the city from where they were right now, but hopefully getting to the mall wouldn’t be too much of a hassle.

Once they arrived at the mall, Norman immediately grabbed Time by the arm and lead him into a small store right off to the side. It wasn’t very big and it was easy to see that it was a chocolate store. ”Before you ask, I already checked and they do gluten free, pretty much all of it is gluten free unless it’s got like...obviously gluten in it,” Norman explained. “I used to come here all the time growing up, they do free samples, I figured we could each get one thing and then do all the clothes shopping,” he continued. “Clothes shopping is tiring, chocolate is a good way to start anything off, it seemed like a good idea.”Saa’s Candy was a good place to start any mall visit. With plenty of chocolate and some other types of candy as well - not to mention the free samples - this place had become a staple of his growing up. Norman had actually spent a majority of his childhood in New York, with his mother living in Brooklyn and his brothers living in New York City, he knew his way around the state.

It was safe to say that Time was initially confused by Norman grabbing him by the arm and taking him toward a store that very clearly was not for clothes. He could read the front of it, telling him and everybody else around that it was a chocolate store of some kind. Maybe Norman was just hungry and wanted something to snack on? That was the only thing Time could think of, plus chocolate was okay. It wasn’t the greatest thing in the world, but Time wouldn’t decline any if he was ever given some, unless he literally couldn’t eat it, but that was another story entirely.
It didn’t take Norman long to explain his reasoning behind pulling Time into the store. As he suspected, it was for a little snack before doing the actual shopping. That was fine with him, and just as he was about to bring up the fact that he probably wouldn’t get anything due to his restrictions, Norman was quick to add that the store did offer a wide selection of gluten free chocolate. Maybe he would try some afterall then; it also made him feel a rush of warm gratitude squirm around in his chest. It was nice of Norman to be so vigilant about Time’s food restriction. Most people probably wouldn’t be so thoughtful about that, or they’d just wave it off as him being on some weird fad diet and trick him into eating gluten somehow.
Not wanting to get onto that train of thought, Time put his focus on the chocolate store itself, following Norman even if he had ahold of his arm for the time being. ”So, what would you recommend?” He asked, honestly not sure what he would end up wanting. Time knew he was pretty picky and more than likely he wouldn’t like what Norman’s favorite was, but there was a small chance he would and he was at least going to give it a try. If anything Norman could at least help him figure out what chocolate Time might like best.

Norman let out a low, thoughtful hum as he looked over the choices. By now he has tried everything in this store at least once, and while he wasn’t a fan of all of it, he did enjoy most of it and he wasn’t about to not eat food put in front of him. Would he judge the food if it was bad? Oh definitely, but he wasn’t gonna refuse to eat it, refusing to eat food was what cowards did and Norman was no coward. In fact he remembered this one time that Niko tried to make pancakes - and it was a well known fact that you just didn’t let Niko into the kitchen in general - and he had burnt them so bad they were charred and black, neither Ty nor Kai would touch them. Norman however, ate every last one of them. Amazingly, he didn’t even throw up after that, he was like a raccoon or a squirrel, his gut was made of steel. Anyways, that wasn’t the point here. “Personally, I like the chocolates with fruity flavors, but the chocolate-peanut butter mix is also always nice, and of course so is chocolate and mint, it’s just sort of whatever flavors you prefer,” Norman explained with a shrug as he walked over to the front counter. The lady behind the counter was old, probably in her late seventies, however she had a kind smile and a twinkle in her eyes that made her appear younger in spirit, her gray hair was pulled back by a hairnet, and the little rag on her apron read “Carol” on it. She smiled at him and pulled out to candies from behind the counter, placing them in front of Norman and Time. “Two peanut butter patties for you two,” she told them and Norman said a quick thank you before passing along one of the patties to Time. “Here, try this.”

The only option out of those three that Norman had mentioned that sounded somewhat good to Time was the peanut butter chocolate. He already knew he did like that okay enough, so going with that one would probably be the best bet for him, but he was still willing to try anything that was handed to him. Time was a lot of things, but he wasn’t about to decline somebody’s gesture of kindness all because he was a picky eater. Chocolate and fruit didn’t sound too bad, but he wasn’t sure if he wanted to mix something sweet with something like fruit, and the same went with mint. He’d rather just have fruit and mint by themselves if he had the choice, but now wasn’t the time to complain and be picky. He knew he just needed to be grateful for whatever he ended up with.
Keeping that in mind, Time followed over to the counter, offering a small smile to the lady behind it, hoping he didn’t come off as too awkward. He usually did though, he wasn’t very good at handling anything social. ”Thank you,” he quickly thanked the woman after she had handed over some chocolate for both Norman and Time. He then echoed his thanks back to Norman when the smaller man handed him one of the chocolates. Time looked it over for a moment, briefly wondering if he should ask the old woman if this was safe for him to eat before letting the question die on his tongue - Norman had said earlier that this place was mostly gluten free, and Time trusted Norman to know if something like this was safe or not for him to eat.
So without another word he tried a bite, taking a small, experimentative one to test it out and see if he even liked it. The chocolate itself looked good, and he had high hopes for it, but it wasn’t long until his taste buds decided to be picky and hate the little treat.
Time hoped beyond everything that his face didn’t show the disgust that his tongue was experiencing. The chocolate itself was really good, Time enjoyed the flavor of that, but it was the peanut butter that was getting to him. It had to be the particular kind that was used for this, it wasn’t like he hated peanut butter or anything like that.
Even still he forced himself to take another bite, hoping that maybe the first had just been a fluke.
Nope. Still couldn’t stand the peanut butter. He was still going to eat it all though under the obligation of wanting to be nice and not waste a free treat.
”The chocolate’s good,” he commented to both Norman and the worker. It wasn’t a lie. The chocolate itself tasted great, so as long as he didn’t say anything about the peanut butter he could just pass this off as being truthful. Though he doubted either of them would ask him how he liked the peanut butter inside the chocolate specifically, so Time was sure he was safe here for the most part.

The chocolate was good, wasn’t it? Norman had always enjoyed coming here, especially for all the different types of chocolate, though of course, he also had a natural sweet tooth...maybe just a food tooth in general since he enjoyed savory food as well, anyways the point was that he enjoyed it here and it was fun for him to get the chance to share it with Time. ”Right? It’s pretty good, huh?” He asked with a grin once he had finished off his own free sample. Okay, now that free samples were out of the way, it was time to get serious, what were they going to buy? Looking away from Time, Norman scanned over the counter. ”Alright Carol, I think I’ll take a cherry and an orange chocolate,” he decided, pointing to them both individually before he looked back to Time. ”What do you want?” He asked, head tilted to the side. All of this could be kind of overwhelming though, he’d understand if Time struggled to pick something.

Time relaxed with relief. It seemed like neither Norman nor Carol noticed that he had only mentioned the chocolate being good, saying nothing about the peanut butter. He was glad no questions were asked or comments were made, and instead he was able to get away with it. At least now he knew he didn’t care for the specific peanut butter that was used, and he could avoid getting anything that would have it in the chocolate.
Though now came a decision Time wasn’t sure he was ready to make. Would it be weird to not pick something with peanut butter in it after he had just said the treat was good? If he ordered something different would questions be asked? Time looked around at the different chocolates nearby, hoping that he looked like he was just scanning the treats rather than having an inward panic. Maybe he could get away with getting something that didn’t have peanut butter in it. He could do that, right? ...Right?
With a breath to try and calm his nerves, Time brought his mix-matched gaze up to the worked and asked, ”Do you have something that’s just chocolate?” As soon as the question slipped off his tongue he realized how odd that probably sounded, so he added a quick, ”Not that I don’t like anything else in my chocolate, it’s just…” He trailed off, freezing up, realizing he was making a fool of himself by rambling on now. Man, what kind of person was he that he couldn’t even handle himself in a chocolate shop? A pretty pathetic one, that’s what.
