Hello! So my buddy 𝕾𝖙𝖔𝖗𝖒𝖗𝖆𝖌𝖊 and I are thinking of making a semi-advanced roleplay, but we can't decide what to do. This roleplay will be free for however many people want to join, however we might have some basic ideas for character roles. We are both generally advanced writers but, like most people here, often don't have the time and energy to write super long posts consistently. For that reason, this roleplay will be much more open to people who prefer writing approximately 1-3 substantial paragraphs. That is the only thing that is set in stone right now. Otherwise, we are totally open to suggests about the content of the rp!
Here are our two basic outlines. Please vote for which one you would be more interested in joining!
1. Assassins: This roleplay would be set in about the 1600s in a european-inspired city. The characters are a part of a secret society of skilled individuals specializing in death. Their main purpose? Rid the city of corruption, even if it means shedding a bit of blood. There would likely be an element of magic. We've done iterations of this roleplay before where the characters each had some magical ability.
2. Kingdom: This, on the other hand, would focus on a number of families/individuals vying for power within a kingdom. It would involve the death of a monarch and the struggle to put a new ruler in charge. There could be arranged marriages, manipulation, duels, war, alliances, etc. It would be more focused on the dynamics between people whether that be within families or political alliance.
So what do you think? Does one spark your interest more than the other?
Please feel free to comment as well as just voting. We're 100% open to plotting and generating new ideas within this framework.

Setting the SceneThis story begins after the sudden death of the former queen, who, although popular among the people, was a private ruler in almost every regard. She failed to leave behind a legal heir, therefore the days after her death are tense with the question of who will succeed her. It was assumed she would live forever. Now that this has proven untrue, the palace is in shambles. There are several possible contenders for her successor. But the question of who with sit upon the throne is not the only that must be answered. Many others are in play. For example, a war seems to be brewing with there enemies to the west. Not only that, but new religious powers have risen among the common people which threaten the way of life for the most powerful in the castle. Not to mention, a political uprising threatens the monarchy altogether. All of this is coming to a head in the days leading up to a royal wedding. This roleplay will explore all of those plotlines.
Here are the biggest powers in the kingdom:
The Royal Family The family is apart of a long dynasty of rulers. Though popular with the people, their lives are kept largely secret from their subjects and they are often expected to put on facades of more idealized selves. Rulers are treated as deities in the kingdom, therefore statues of them are scattered throughout the city. Behind the curtain, they are a complex group of people. Loyalties and rivalries run deep within. Their members are: ° The Uncle: Witty, charismatic, irresponsible. Age 36, claimed by ℊℓоω ° The First Princess: Faithful, weak willed, kind. Age 20, claimed by ℊℓоω ° The Twin Prince: Aloof, studious, loyal. claimed by 𝕾𝖙𝖔𝖗𝖒𝖗𝖆𝖌𝖊 ° The Twin Princess: Free spirited, sharp tongued, independent. Open
The Browvyre House The wealthiest family in the kingdom has always been close allies to the royal dynasty. They are some of the largest financial backers of the crown, and they have influence in many areas. They also have a deep connection to the most pervasive religion, that of the Three Sisters. They are intelligent, manipulative, and highly involved in all royal matters. ° The Mother: Scheming, vain, powerful. Open ° The Son: Honorable, well-liked, reckless. Open ° The Priestess/Daughter: Manipulative, intelligent, pious. Open
The Blackrunner House They are from the mountains to the south. Though often quite distant from royal family politics, they are now being pulled into the fold due to an upcoming marriage between their eldest son and the eldest royal daughter. They are proud people in their own right, though they lack knowledge of the internal politics of the kingdom. They run a practically independent land which the former queen was intent on securing. ° The Father: Brash, likable, proud. Open ° The Eldest Son: Independent, brooding, capable. Open ° The Daughter: Gloomy, clever, silver-tongued. claimed by 𝕊’𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖
Miscellaneous Obviously these are the characters who do not belong to a larger house, but could be important to the plot nonetheless (depending on who gets claimed). ° The Priest (m): Learned, seductive, scheming. Open ° The Guard (m): Honorable, loyal, political. Age 28, claimed by ℊℓоω ° The Commander (m): Flirtatious, determined, funny. Open ° The Herbalist (f): Caring, intelligent, intrepid. Open ° The Assassin (m): Unreadable, beautiful, manipulative. Open ° The Rebel Leader (f): Charismatic, brave, well-spoken. Open

It’s a really cool combination! I was wondering if I could maybe pre-claim characters now? I typically can get more plot ideas and stuff going after I have a couple characters figured out

I don't know how well I can keep up the paragraphs like I did back in the day, but I have interest in the setting and the back, doubly so if magic isn't involved or is extremely muted.
I have my eye on that commander because I have an affinity for playing militia or mercenary captains. That said, should it be possible, I'd quite like to instead keep a rotating cast of non essential characters that can come and go as they're needed (partly because I've traditionally had a bad habit of accidentally dipping for weeks at a time, and partly because I quite like not having plot armor).
Either way, I can conjure up characters pretty quickly, so let me know what needs filling when you're about ready to throw the thread up.

How much has been pre-planned about the kingdom and its neighbors? Territories, economies, governments, cultures (and by proxy, naming conventions), existing geopolitical tensions (beyond the threat of the mystery enemies in the west), that sort of thing.
I don't ask from an "I want a hardcore simulation" perspective so much as from a "my commoner is more likely to have ____ background with basic knowledge about local _____" or a "my militia is probably equipped to fight on _____ terrain under circumstances of _____" perspective. Also, because I take my random name generation seriously.

Here's a link to the page where I've been dumping all of my thoughts. The third section has a little info on the culture and stuff. Other than that, it's entirely up to you. I'll go along with any ideas you might have cause I'm always just winging it. Plus I love plotting.

Three more quick questions before I start making things.
How centralized is the kingdom? Is it still feudal or has the crown taken on more authority/power?
Partly dependent on the previous, is the kingdom recruiting the bulk of its army or is it relying more heavily on mercenaries?
Should I use Reformation Europe as a baseline for technology?

Dumping this here for now, because I only want to post finished products on the character page. Keep in mind that I've only dumped flaws/quirks into personalities for now, mostly because I decided to try using Aces & Eights as a baseline. That is also why only height and weight are in the appearances and why sibling relationships are in parentheses. Idea is that I can develop anyone further if and only if I need them. Otherwise, they just fill out the world, NPCs living the NPC life. Moorites: Name: Thomas Begeresburg
Slot: Low level noble/upper level gentry in The Moors
Age: 22
Gender: M
Appearance: 69", 138 lbs, RH,
Personality: Alcoholic, selfish, paranoid;
History: Born the second child to the Begeresburg family, and second in line to the title/land of his father. Older brother was heir, pretty much a hero. He had a rudimentary education in military matters, but parents really only knew about stewardship and couldn't teach him much. Also got a barebones classical education, but struggled with it. Parents were absentee landlords, living in a city that got hit by a slow fever epidemic; two suvivors in the immediately family. Older brother died two months later in an unfortunate accident when a bridge gave way under his carriage. Ascended to title, and had a sudden moment of "now, what?" Answers may be found at the bottom of the ale jug.
Family: Father: Died of slow fever Mother: Died of slow fever Older brother: Accidental causes Younger sister: Died of slow fever Younger sister: Died of slow fever Younger brother: Died of slow fever Name: Duncan Cullane
Slot: Minor gentry
Age: 26
Gender: M
Appearance: 69", 143 lbs, RH
Personality: Hardcase, jingoist, prejudiced toward civilians
History: Lived a hard life on the Sybrun border, exacerbated by his frustration that he could not inherit land. Fought long and hard with his family (except for Maude, who was as aggrieved as he was) just because he had nothing to lose (and, he thinks, they started it), and learned martial skill by picking fights with kids who could fight back. Angry parents were happy to let him run off to join some condottierre at 17. Picked up a severe distaste for unambitious peasants and decadent burghers in the process, and made some money at the expense of each in foreign wars.
Family: Father: Robert Cullane Mother: Agnes Older brother: Johne (natural) Older sister: Agnes (argumentative) Older sister: Maude Kintor (very close) Older brother: died of consumption Younger sister: Margret (natural) Name: Maude Kintor (née Cullane)
Slot: Minor gentry
Age: 28
Gender: F
Appearance: 64", 128 lbs, RH
Personality: Ornery, greedy, lynch lawnman.
History: Lived a hard life on the border, finding the lack of ambition in the family irritating, and made a bad mood habitual. Exception was Duncan, who seemed to be trying to make something of himself. Managed to charm a slightly wealthier gentleman with no immediate family enough to get him to pay the dowry for her. Two years later, an unfortunate dung explosion occured underneath his favorite bench in the local tavern. Inherited the land from him, having sired no children. Local nobility became too scared of her for her to marry again, so she's taken up hunting and talking to her brother about what war is like.
Family: Husband: died in an accident
Father: Robert Cullane Mother: Agnes Older brother: Johne (argumentative) Older sister: Agnes (bitter enemy) Younger brother: Duncan (very close) Younger brother: died of consumption Younger sister: Margret (argumentative) Name: Andrew Gray
Slot: Gentry
Age: 47
Gender: M
Appearance: 68", 148 lbs, LH, trick knee, acorn calf
Personality: PROFESSES THE COUNTRY DOCTRINE!
History: Inherited half of a major estate, which included less of the money but more of the land. Received a full classical education; fluent in several languages and knows his history. Spent much of his time as a landlord studying the world, studying society, studying religion, and serving in government, professing himself to be an expert on them all. His conclusion: landowners are virtuous, merchants are greedy, and that the government should listen more to landowners. His brother, a major stockholder in the wool trade, is unimpressed.
Family: Wife: Catte Older brother: Adam (argumentative) Younger brother; died in infancy 5 children, inc. Thomas Gray Name: Thomas Gray
Slot: Minor gentry
Age: 24
Gender: M
Appearance: 70", 157", RH, Colorblind
Personality: Spendthrift, boiled shirt
History: Received the full classical education, with a focus on the military. Only major argument with father was whether a well-regulated militia had a prayer against a professional army; experience as an aide in a foreign war said it didn't. Became heir to the family estate when Walter accidentally crashed the family carriage during a vacation. Presently finishing his education and seeking an opportunity for a knighthood on the side.
Family: Father: Andrew Gray Mother: Catte Older sister: Katherine (argumentative) Older brother: died of accident Older sister: died in infancy Younger sister: Malle (natural) Younger brother: Walter (very close) Name: Martin Wardnar
Slot: Man-at-arms
Age: 21
Gender: M
Appearance: 70", 157 lbs, RH
Personality: Chivalrous, gullible, chunked
History: Grew up having the daylights beaten out of him because his father didn't want to deal with an uppity kid after having to repair the state of affairs in the territory or having to chase criminals; relations were strained, but eventually repaired. Found he had a natural talent for horsemanship, and quickly learned how to use weapons, picking up an affinity for the lance. Acquired a desire to bring back the gentleman knight (never mind that he is not a gentleman and a hundred years late to be a knight with a lance); for now, content to pick up experience in the royal guard in Inoever and attempt to distinguish himself.
Family: Father: Sir John Wardnar, small landholder, served stints as seneschal and sheriff in The Moor Mother: Marion Older brother: died of consumption Older sister: died of flu Older sister: Elizabeth (very close) Older brother: David (natural) Older sister: died of pneumonia Younger brother: Alexander (natural) Younger sister: died of smallpox Vlellesians: Name: Gherelm Wachtere
Slot: Man-at-arms
Age: 27
Gender: M
Appearance: 69", 152lbs, RH
Personality: Loco (royalty), spendthrift, tinhorn
History: Born into a family of well-to-do commoners in a small village near Vlelles, but won't buy it. Convinced from a young age (around about the time consumption passed through) that his family was off noble blood and he was being denied his birthright. His boldness about proclaiming it got him placed onto the local garrison, being told that it was his duty to keep his land safe from threats. Quite by accident, he foiled a plot of intrigue while on duty by trying to buy up all of the wares of a posing merchant, and his detective prowess immediately got him hired by a higher ranking noble for his personal retinue. When that noble died of disease, the heir let him go, and so he now travels the countryside peddling his claims to royalty and collecting a stipend.
Family: average upbringing Father: Henric Piscatoris Mother: Mette Older sister: died of consumption Younger brother: Henric (natural) Younger sister: died in infancy Younger brother: died in infancy Name: Rodolff Ritter
Slot: Knight
Age: 26
Gender: M
Appearance: 66", 169 lbs
Personality: Jingoist, buck nun, straight shooter, greedy
History: Born a hereditary knight in a nobleman's service. Got some of the classical education, but raised a soldier, and raised extraordinarily well for the role. Got so that he can barely talk about anything but soldiering and, later, commanding. Has yet to be tested in a real battle, but he is highly regarded. He has made a handful of enemies, not from his reputation or success in jousting and wargaming, but because he indirectly exposed a plot and implicated two courtiers in it when he mentioned in passing that he had been advising them on the benefits of different kinds of knives.
Family: Father: Herman Ritter Mother: Gertruid Younger sister: Machtilden (very close) Younger brother: died in infancy Younger sister: died in infancy Desans: Name: Joachim Hintzen
Slot: Heretical theologian
Age: 29
Gender: M
Appearance: 63", 123 lbs,
Personality: Fourflusher, Fanatic, Yellow belly, Guardian angel
History: Was in training to be a clergyman in Desa, as is the correct path for the third born in a pious family. Unfortunately, he converted to Kallistarism as soon as he was ordained and fled to becoming a travelling minister. He frequently appears in a town as a fiery preacher, then bolts as soon as the guards come for him, leaving behind suspicion, doubts, and (he hopes) the seeds of conversion to the true faith.
Family: Father: Heinrich Hintzen Mother: Clare Older brother: died in infancy Older sister: bitter enemy Older sister: died in infancy Older sister: died in childhood attending to chamber business Older brother: Heinrich (argumentative) Older brother: Radke (argumentative) Younger sister: Anne (natural) I meant to get a couple of merchants in there too, but then I decided I should dump what I had first and contemplate dinner.

Just gonna pop in for a moment. I've been lurking around and watching this for like a day now and I'm interested. I have some character ideas, but I was curious if the Browvyer daughter had to be a Priestess or if that was a suggestion.
