aa, gotcha. Maybe I'll wait on writing Quagmire for that intro post, then, and I can have her have been living in the village at the time of the attack? Just so I have a little more context on the situation ^^ ))

Manta Somewhere in the Sea Kingdom || Dawn || [open] That morning, as the first ray of faint light filtered their way down through the pristine waters of the Sea Kingdom, Manta was doing what she always did- running away from home.
She had it totally figured out this time- she would swim North from the palace, emerging far onto the tip of the Sky Kingdom. Then, she would work her way into the mainland, avoiding the patrols of both SkyWings and SeaWings looking for her as she went. It was totally foolproof. Absolutely nothing could go wrong. This time, for sure, she'd get to see another Kingdom!
Tucking the last of her supplies into a small bag, Manta smiled. It was mostly filled with food- she didn't count on the SkyWings having any reliable food sources, at least not ones she could eat- but a few of the more unique contents were safely tucked away near the bag's edges. A map of Pyrrhia, "borrowed" from the Royal Library. A pouch of gemstones, in case she needed to purchase anything on her trip. And, finally, a small selection of jewelry, so that she could switch out of her more... distinctive pieces once she needed to begin hiding.
Humming quietly, the Princess finished placing the last pieces of her current array of gems around her body. Last, as always, were the earrings her father had given her. She never left home without them, even if the agate stones clashed horribly with the rest of her ornaments. Manta spared a glance over to her parents' room, half wondering if she should leave them a note or something. However, she decided against it. I don't want to be found, remember? she chastised herself. Slinging the bag over her shoulder, Manta sighed. Alright. Here I go. Carefully opening the window in her room, the young SeaWing slipped out into the ocean, ready to embark on her grand adventure.
Today, the journey lasted an hour. A new record.
What caught Manta's attention was a group of turtles. Entranced by their graceful movements, the young Dragon followed them far out of her way, eventually stopping in a beautiful coral reef. Then, her attention was stolen by the lovely, colorful coral. Holding pieces up to her scales, Manta grinned as she broke of small pieces of the plants, tucking them within her bag. Nautilus loved when she brought home coral, especially the colors that matched. Maybe Manta could make herself a new coral necklace today! Humming a tune again, her bio-luminescent scales twinkling along with the melody, Manta made her way deeper into the reef, completely forgetting her mission.
What else was new?

Rambutan The Rainforest Kingdom || A Little After Dawn || [open] Rambutan awoke slowly, rolling his body into the rays of sunlight peeping into his hut. It wasn't like he had anything to do today. Sure, there was a freaky dark thing going around killing dragons, but it wasn't like he could do anything to stop that. There was no way it could even reach the heart of the Rainforest Kingdom. ...right?
Huffing, Rambutan forced himself to get up and look outside the open windows of his hut. His sloth let out a small squeak of disappointment as it was left behind in the nest. Glancing out into the morning light, he saw... nothing. Right. What did you expect to see, dummy? Shaking his head, the young RainWing sighed. Something still felt off, but he was probably just freaking himself out again. It was hard not to be a little paranoid these days.
Walking back over to his nest, he deftly scooped up Fluffy, scratching the top of the sloth's head as he deposited it on his back. "Let's go on out, huh?" Rambutan cooed, smiling gently at the tiny animal. He was probably more attached to Fuzzy than he was to any of his RainWing friends. Not because they weren't fun or kind or interesting, but... well, he rarely felt like himself around the other RainWings. There was always an appearance to upkeep, a relationship to heal, a conversation to jump in on. It was tiring. Around Fuzzy, he didn't have to worry about any of that.
Walking out of the small room he called his home, Rambutan blinked as the sun flooded his eyes with gold. The rainforest was as beautiful as always, glistening with colors and echoing with the cries of animals and insects. A few RainWings were out and about as well, standing on platforms similar to the one he found beneath his feet now. The real crowds wouldn't be out until later, though. A good many RainWings still enjoyed getting their beauty sleep.
With a short hop and flap of his wings, Rambutan made his way up to the flat roof of his hut. He took Fuzzy off his back here, placing the sloth on a small seat designed for him. Then, the dragon laid down, dangling his front talons off the roof. He kept his eyes half-lidded as he rested his head on his arms, pretending to still be mostly asleep. However, Rambutan was always scanning the village, double-checking for other dragons he knew or... or any shadowy figures lurking about. One could never be too careful.

A Strike in the Dark ____________________________ Sunrise ✧ The Mud Kingdom When Queen Fern woke up that morning, she did not expect she would receive a NightWing with an alarming message from the Night Kingdom. Nor did she expect to be summoned to one of the villages of her kingdom before breakfast. But at least the latter was somewhat normal these days.
Fern and her sibs — Flint, Lavender, and Russet — had been woken up that morning by one of the palace servants. The young dragon had seemed both terrified and excited to be bringing her queen news, though her good cheer had faded when she saw Queen Fern's reaction to said news.
Another village had been sacked by the strange danger. Homes had been destroyed, multiple businesses ruined. The dragons who made their home there were terrified. And this time, there were casualties.
As soon as she'd gotten the full report, Queen Fern dismissed the young dragon and immediately set out for the village, her sibs with her. Another, older, servant tried to stop her on her way out, claiming a messenger had come to see her, but Queen Fern just ordered the new dragon taken care of and that she would deal with them when she returned. She was in a hurry. Her destination was halfway between the palace and the Diamond Spray Delta. Fern flew quickly, but the short trip still felt twice as long as it was.
She landed on the outskirts, a sense of despair already sweeping over her as she saw the destruction spread out before her. This was the third such attack in the last month, and it was the worst by far. Mud, dirt, and grass had been squashed and spattered everywhere; there was hardly a building or hut left standing; and an awful sense of fear permeated the air. Some dragons were moving about, trying to repair the damage or reassure others, but many were huddled with their sibs, looking like they needed comfort.
Fern offered that comfort. She took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and absently spread her wings to brush those of Lavender and Russet on either side of her. Then she moved forward with more confidence and determination than she felt and began moving among them.
It took a few minutes, but soon dragons started taking notice of her, quickly followed by recognition. And then they were all coming to greet her, one sib group after another. Fern and her siblings did their best to offer comfort and reassurances, and Fern asked the less shaken dragons for a report on what, exactly, had happened.
The report was awful but not totally unexpected. The attack had started the same as the two before it: in the hours right before dawn, when most everyone was still sleeping, a dark presence had swept over the village, giving everyone who sensed it chills. Then the screaming had started as one sleeping hut after another had suddenly exploded as if a series of firebombs had gone off. Only there had been no fire, no smoke. Some claimed they had seen a dark, formless figure shoot through the village, leaving more destruction in its wake. And then, just when everyone thought it was over, the darkness had swelled behind a group of dragons and descended in one devastating sweep. Two dragons had died, and three more had been critically injured. The healers were uncertain if they would all survive the day.
After receiving the report, Fern asked to see the injured dragons. As she was led to the healer's hut (one of the only structures still standing) she turned to Flint with worried eyes. "The strangeness has never taken a life before," she said, her voice low enough that no one else could hear. "What changed? Why would it suddenly escalate like this?"
Flint's expression was as stoic as ever, but Fern could see through that to the fear and uncertainty beneath. He shook his head. "I don't think there was anything 'sudden' about it. Whatever or whoever this thing is, I think it always planned to do more than just wreck a bunch of buildings from time to time."
Fern did not like that idea one bit. "Have you come up with any ideas on how to stop it?"
"No.” Flint scowled as he answered, and Fern could guess why. Flint was one of the smartest dragons she knew, and he prided himself on that intelligence. She knew how it must chafe on him that he hadn’t been able to think of anything to do to save their kingdom. “What of the other queens?” he asked after a moment. “Did any of them have ideas in their last correspondence?"
Fern sighed. "No. Nothing. They are as stumped as we are."
Flint grunted. "It doesn't help that we don't even know what it is."
Indeed. As much as the strangeness scared her, Fern would very much like to know what it was.
They said no more as they arrived at the healer's hut, and after she visited with each of the injured dragons — two of whom were unconscious — she and her siblings dispersed among the village to help with repairs. Some tried to protest, claiming manual labor was below her, but Fern insisted. It wasn't that long ago that she was like them, the niece of the last queen and believed to be hardly a proper contented for the throne. Besides, she told them, she had nothing better to do with her day.
Or so she thought.~ ✧ ~ ✧ ~
____________________________ Midday ✧ Pyrrhia ✧ North of Rainforest, West of Mud Kingdom After two days of hard travel, Starfire was just about ready to smother his sister in her sleep. Lovingly, of course. And with a probable chance of her surviving. But he was definitely going to smother her. Yep. So going to happen. Especially if she —
"Starfire, are we there yet?"
— asked ONE MORE QUESTION.
Starfire bit back a sigh. He had been doing that almost nonstop since they left the Night Kingdom; he was surprised he still had any breath left for other things. Like breathing. Something Skydancer didn't seem to need, considering her nonstop chatter.
He looked down at the landscape passing by beneath them. In the last two days, they had seen mountains, desert, rivers, grasslands, and forests. For the last day, the rainforest had stretched out to their right, a vast jungle of green with flashes of bright color. Skydancer had asked — multiple times — if they could travel through the rainforest, maybe even visit the RainWing village and see if any of their RainWing relatives remembered them. Starfire had considered it, but his instinct had urged him to continue on to the MudKingdom, as quickly as possible. Going through the rainforest would just slow them down.
The land below them had been the same since noon: grassland and meadows, mostly, with a few scattered patches of forest. Rivers and the occasional small lake glimmered blue in the sunlight. And the rainforest remained their constant companion to the right. But now Starfire tilted his head and looked closer at the ground far below. Did it look a little more wet and muddy than it had an hour ago?
"Starfire. Helloooo. Are you listening to me? I asked if we were almost there, because I am getting so sick of flying. I also would love some company who knows how to string more than three words together. And I'm hungry again. Do you think we could —"
"Skydancer," Starfire cut in sharply. "Stop for a second. I think we're there." He pointed one claw at the ground. "Look. Does that look like wetland to you?"
Skydancer peered downward for about three seconds, then side-eyed him. "Why are you asking me? Why not just go down there and land? Then we'll know for sure if the ground is wet. Plus, we'll be able to find some food. I did mention I was starving, right?"
"No, I'm quite certain you only said you were hungry," Starfire muttered. He was staring at the ground again. Skydancer did have a point: landing would be the quickest way to see if the ground was wet. But landing equaled hunting, and hunting meant it would take that much longer to reach Queen Fern's palace. If it were just him, he could afford that delay — mostly because there would have been fewer and shorter stops earlier in the trip. But Skydancer was not known for her haste, and haste was definitely what they needed right now.
"No," he decided. "We'll keep flying. We're almost there, and once we get to the Mud Palace, I'm sure Queen Fern will feed you."
Skydancer heaved a great sigh. "Fiiiiiine. But don't blame me if my stomach starts growling like a caged beast. Hey, do you think she'll try to feed us crocodiles? Cause I don't think I want to try crocodile, but wouldn't refusing a queen be really rude? But, like, wouldn't it be ruder — is that a word? Ruder? — to taste it and then upchuck it all over the queen? I would totally…"
Starfire turned her out. He tried to imagine smothering her in her sleep again, to distract himself more than anything, but his thoughts kept jumping ahead to what was to come. What would happen when they arrived? Would the queen agree to let him choose the prophecy dragon? And how would he choose? Instinct and his power would only get him so far. What was he meant to do, wander the whole Mud Kingdom until he found the dragon that made his power go "That's the one!"? That could take ages, and if there was one thing he was sure about, it was that they didn't have that kind of time.
He was jolted from his thoughts by Skydancer, when she suddenly whacked him with her wing. "Ow! Hey! What was that for?"
Skydancer gave him a bland stare. "You weren't listening. I said, look! Is that what I think it is?"
Starfire looked. Shimmering on the far horizon was a large body of water. Rising above it was a tall structure. It was still too far away to see details, but it certainly looked like a palace to him.
A tingling along his wings told him all he needed to know: they had officially arrived at the Mud Kingdom.

❀ Fen ❀ mud kingdom | midday
Had Fen woken up just ten minutes later than morning, things might have been different. They might have spent the rest of their lives cooped up in that old dreary house with cracked windows and a ceiling that seemed to leak even when it wasn't raining. And yet, as Fen sat at their desk, watching the sun slowly trace it's regular path in the sky it just felt like any other day.
In the other room, they could hear their siblings Rust and Mayfly arguing. Like most things in the house, sound leaked. But Fen was used to blocking out the fights- perhaps if they were a better BigWings they would have intervened, tried to deescalate the situation or talk things through. Fen knew, however, that the two rarely ever held grudges and that their arguments were hardly ever serious.
I just wish they could keep it down, they thought shaking their head. With a sigh, they focused back on the task at hand. A piece of paper had been laid out on the desk, Fen's most recent order. It detailed a problem- something about insects ruining important herbs or some nonsense. It didn't matter what the dragon asked for, just the paycheck at the end.
Rising to their feet, Fen walked over to the cabinet in which they stored their supplied. Jars of every kind of material- water, clay, sand, crushed up flowers, crushed up bone- you name it, spread across dusty shelves arranged in a chaotic fashion. There weren't labels on anything- at least not the supplies Fen knew from heart. The cabinet had been supplied with ingredients from all over the continent, some imported directly to Fen's house, others bartered for deep in the marshes. But the majority of the supplies had been gathered by hand- clay pulled from the Diamond Spray Delta, salt extracted from the ocean, and flowers picked from the marshes.
Sighing, Fen reached into the back of their supply, removing a jar filled with dried out leaves. While it would be easier to send some silica to do the trick, Fen was low on quartz, and chrysanthemums would be easy to restock later. Grabbing a mortar and pestle, they returned to their desk, and began grinding up the leaves. It would be a slow process, but worth it in the end.
Sitting by themself, Fen began to relax, quietly humming a song to pass the time. The dragon who had taught them it, hadn't been the most honest man, but he sure knew how to belt out a tune. Fen had practically begged the SandWing to teach them the chorus, and if he seemed confused as to why a MudWing dragonet wanted to learn a rowdy SandWing drinking song, he didn't show it.
Fen hadn't noticed their brothers had gone silent until they heard the front door close. Stirring from their work, they rose to their feet, slowly exiting the back room of the house. Did someone leave? Did someone break in? They wondered, but upon entering the front room, they saw a very somber pair of MudWings just staring at one another.
"Rust...? Mayfly?" They asked, gaze switching from brother to brother. "What is it?"
"It's nothing," Mayfly responded, a half-hearted smile stretched across his face. "Just that a town a few miles away got attacked by that beast-thingie. Nothing to worry about I'm sure we-"
"Yeah, but it's different this time." Rust snapped, cutting his brother off. "Dragons died this time. A healer's apprentice just came by looking for medicinal supplies, and from what he asked for the wounds were serious. There might be more casualties by nightfall."
Fen let a quiet huff. It was just like Mayfly to try and protect them. Fen was supposed to be the BigWings of the family, they were supposed to be informed not kept in the dark. He just didn't want you to worry, the rational part of their brain assured, but Fen couldn't help feeling hurt.
"We should be careful," They responded after a minute. "Stick together, like we used to." Fen wasn't going to let some random attack cow them into hiding, but there was a still logical response. Even if it means putting a hold on that trip to the mountains I was planning. Shaking out their wings, Fen turned to head back into the back room, before stopping.
"If you see that dragon again, tell him to stop by. I'll send him on his way with some of my raw components." It would be a hit to their business, loosing their supplies and limiting the time when they could restock, but if the materials could save a life then they'd be daft to horde it to themselves.
Fen paused, and then switched directions. "I'm going to fly around, just for a bit." It was sibling lingo for 'I need to clear my head because you idiots are tiring to be around' but Fen knew they didn't miss the concern on their brothers' faces. They had just made a speech about staying together, and now they were planning on being alone for a stretch of time. But Fen didn't have time to debate the hypocrisy of the statement. "If you're going to follow me, at least stay a few wingbeats behind," They called over their shoulder as they swung open the door and took to the skies.
Above, the Mud Kingdom looked like nothing more than a mudstain across the earth. The burbling bogs, the swaying reeds, the frog songs, all details of life were lost in the big picture. It was relaxing to fly above it all, to be away from the earth, away from reality. And yet, the howling wind did nothing to chase off their trouble thoughts. As they drifted along the air currents, Fen worried about what was going on. Worried about what would happen to them and their siblings.

Yes. If they're a boy, they can be literally anyone in the royal family — the queen's brother, uncle, son, nephew, cousin, whatever. But if it's a girl, she'll have to be either a younger sister to the Queen, a daughter, or a niece. She could possibly be Manta's sister if lazy penguin and kiwi cheesecake are okay with it. ^^

In the books, at least, royal marriages are always within their own Tribe. Only females can become a Queen, so they kinda can have a relationship with whoever they want, since they have the power. I think relationships between royals of tribes have existed, but it isn't something they officially do for like politics or negotiations))
