| Shengying | Ticket Station | Shengying nodded at George's comment about the art movement. As they approached the metro they caught the look George sent them and nodded. George was practically his little brother. It was just natural to look out for him. "Oh- no, no, that's fine." Shengying protested automatically as Cvetko offered, waving a hand. Sure, Cvetko had been the one to invite them all, but they felt bad mooching off of them, especially since they didn't know each other well yet. Though they figured if Cvetko insisted, Shengying would just grab tickets for the next event they ended up doing. The fact that they wouldn't all have to wade through the people made sense.

The city was always more crowded than George expected it to be. He was aware that the population of the world was expanding, but it was one thing to know that and quite another to remember the city as it had been a hundred years before. It hadn’t been that long ago in the grand scheme of things, but… a lot had changed. There were the lights that constantly illuminated the streets at night, for one, but it was also the crowds. Was it tourist season? George had a hard time keeping track of that. They were going somewhere where there would likely be a lot of tourists, but there were plenty of locals who visited museums, too. Telling the difference between them was nearly impossible. Buying tickets sounded like a good idea. Eventually, they were all going to need some way to get around the city, and having a metro card was probably the best idea. For now, though, individual tickets would do. George needed to get used to the metro. He also needed to figure out which stations were the most shaded so he would have the least chance of burning himself trying to get where he was going. “Thank you,” George said to Cvetko, inclining his head in gratitude.

Cvetko glanced between their two companions, noting the difference in response between them. They could pay for the tickets alright, so that wasn’t anything to worry about, but they didn’t want to force it, either…they really didn’t care for the concept of money in general. It would be nice if everything was free, and no one had to worry about either not having enough to do what they wanted or needed to do, or having more than someone else and causing awkwardness without meaning to. Still, they had suggested this outing, and it really didn’t feel necessary to wade through the crowd as a group, so they dipped their head to the two of them and directed their words mostly towards Shengying. “It’s no trouble,” they said cheerfully. “Really. I’m the one who invited you both, it’s only fair.” They dipped their head to the other two and headed over to the tickets. They did have a slight ulterior motive, to be fair. If they stepped away, Shengying and George would be able to speak for a moment without them being right there. Since they’d sort of sprung the idea on them both, it seemed only fair to give them a chance to say anything they wanted about it. Even if Cvetko didn’t actually have any idea what that would be. They did wish they could have brought their camera. They hadn’t been entirely sure that it was allowed, though.

“They seem nice,” George replied, glancing over in the direction Cvetko had gone. They were going to miss the metro if they didn’t get on soon, but he supposed there was no hurry. The metro was going to come again in a few minutes, right? That was how public transportation worked, though George wasn’t the most used to it. Most of the time when he wanted to go somewhere, he flew. He rarely wanted to go with anyone else, but when he did… well, he had walked many places with Shengying. Walking was easier than dealing with public transportation sometimes. He wasn’t… bothered… by it, he just wasn’t really used to being surrounded by so many people. He could smell their blood, and he couldn’t help the small pang in his stomach. Shengying was right – he needed to eat soon. “It’s… nice to get out,” he added after a moment, blue eyes moving up to meet Shengying’s. “It’s not that… I don’t like everyone else, but… it’s a lot of people at once.” He gave a small shrug, biting his lip as he stared at the ground. There was more he could say about the others, but he decided to keep it to himself for a moment. Based solely on first impressions, Cvetko seemed the most tolerable of all of them. He wasn’t exactly looking forward to forcing Rosaleen to go to school just so they didn’t get investigated by CPS. And Jocelyn and Joe were… well, indescribable was a good word for them. He couldn’t really get a read on John either, but he had the feeling he didn’t really like him.

Cvetko waited patiently in line, humming lightly under their breath as they watched the endless stream of strangers flow around them. There were the usual hurried ones, the ones who seemed only able to think of their destination. There were the children…actual children, not ones with more life experience than almost any adult could have…those were the ones Cvetko enjoyed seeing the most. Some were small or shy or frightened. But some watched everything with a sort of wide eyed wonder, as though the sky itself was too incredible to believe in. They felt the usual pang of loneliness they always did in crowds. They would never be like these people, not really. But it had been a long time since they’d believed they could be, and longer since they had been. “Three tickets, please,” they said as their turn came, smiling pleasantly at the person behind the counter as they exchanged green paper for white paper, the texture subtly different under their pale fingers. They were pleased to have accomplished it so seamlessly, even if no one would notice their achievement. That was the point, though, wasn’t it? Not to be noticed, like the lack of hunger wasn’t noticed? They stepped out of line and turned to head back, though they didn’t hurry. Whatever had been said in their absence, they wanted to give ample warning before they came back into earshot.

"Remind me why I needed to come with you again?" Rosaleen complained, kicking at the underside of her seat sullenly as she sat, slightly hunched, restless from the ride. "It smells like crap in here. And there's a piece of gum under my seat. *And* I'm stuck with *you.*"
Yes. She knew if she hadn't stolen Cvetko's rubbery plant thingy during a thunderstorm and put it on the roof to see if it would mutate when it got hit by lightning, she probably would not have been banished with Jib for the afternoon. God, people really had no sense of humor these days.

| Shengying | Metro | With George and Cvetko |
"Mm." Shengying hummed in understanding. They were an introvert as well, and the sudden close quarters with a group could be a bit strained, at times. They made a mental note to check on the kid if he ever got too quiet or withdrawn, possibly overwhelmed by the group. "And, we're in New York City. If we even don't go out to see things, what's the point?"
Shengying looked up as Cvetko approached with the tickets and offered a smile. The other vampire's expression seemed almost dreamy, and Shengying found themself endeared by their slightly disconnected mannerisms. They seemed to be on their own little path, and while Shengying could agree with how lonely that felt sometimes, it set Cvetko apart in a good way, what with how soft-spoken and kind they appeared to be.
Shengying glanced to the doors of the subway, trying to guess if they'd make it on in time- they had no idea how long the things waited at the station, but by the looks of people hurrying over they guessed it was leaving soon. "I think we can make it, if we go quickly."

Jocelyn had his knees propped up on the seat in from him, sitting with one hand holding his chin and the other holding the list John had given him. He hadn’t even looked at it yet, so he could only assume whatever was on it would align with whatever he was out to get. Even if it didn’t, it wasn’t like John had given him money to spend so what was the point of doing another man’s errands?
He jumped a bit when Rosaleen spoke, looking at her with wide dark eyes. “God, I forgot you were with me,” he muttered. He then crossed his arms, crumbling the list in the process and throwing his head back in a dramatic display. “I needed someone other than you, but no one else wanted to come. Unfortunate for the both of us honestly. Still, you could make for better company if you didn’t act like such a brat about everything.” He hummed, turning a wistful gaze out the window.

"Do you ever get tired of being this annoying or is it like a default character trait for you?" said Rosaleen, unbothered by his jabs. She leaned her elbow against the window and pressed her face into her hand, watching the city roll by. It was fine. It wasn't so much that she wanted to see it, as it was that she was sick of seeing Jib's face and found the concrete and the bird sh(oops) stuck to the window to be more attractive scenery. "What did Dee tell us to get anyway? It's not like we need food."

The vampire looked back at his company with innocently raised eyebrows, “hm?” He responded with carefully disguised, feigned cluelessness. He folded his fingers together as he glanced to the others in the train, blinking slowly as he carefully scanned for anyone who looked interesting.
“Oh I haven’t looked,” he said lightly without turning back to look at her. “For now we’re stopping to do a few personal errands - we’ll do whatever he asked if I remember after.” He gestured loosely with the crumbled list before shoving it in his pocket.

"Seriously?" Rosaleen leaned back in her seat to shoot a searing glare at Jib. "John said this was a punishment, not Purgatory," she grumbled, crossing her arms and bracing her legs against the seat in front of her. "He should've just decapitated me and been done with it."
She paused, thinking.
"Get me something from the store and I won't tell Shengying you took me somewhere other than the store."

Jocelyn continued looking away from her with a pleasant smile on his face, only glancing back when she brought up punishments. “It seems hardly fair for you to make this miserable for me as well - I’m trying to enjoy myself - and stop slouching, you look boorish.”
He yawned absently, interrupting her bribe deal. “No,” he responded in a chipper tone. “You can buy your own garbage, besides I don’t give two shits about how Shengying thinks of how I spend my time. Or your time for that matter. I can deal with their… God whatever, don’t threaten to f[oops]in’ snitch on me.” He cocked his head, glancing out the window to see they were nearing their stop. “You’re such a bitch,” he muttered.

Rosaleen cursed back at him in Shelta, annoyed by her lack of English swear vocabulary. She couldn't read English, so she couldn't use a computer, and the others refused to teach her anything, so she was left with the little she could overhear, and what she'd learned in her native tongue. She knew Jib wouldn't understand, so she generally just had to let her tone do the work for her.
She deepened her slouch as he criticized her posture, hunching her shoulders and half disappearing into her too-large jacket. "Miserable likes miserable, or however that goes," she said, giving him a slightly evil grin. "If I gotta be miserable, so do you."

Jocelyn glared at her as she, assumably, spat something rude at him. He waited with his arms crossed until their ride started to slow to a stop, and he promptly stood up. “If you’re going to be immature, so will I,” he declared, seizing ahold of her hair and pulling her out of her seat.
He released her before they had to walk through the isle, though the old couple that had been sitting in front of them still gasped when they saw the two of them. Apparently he wasn’t fitting the responsibilities of a ‘guardian’ very well - but these humans had no idea what it was like dealing with an immortal gremlin like Rosaleen.

Rosaleen allowed herself to be dragged with only minor protest. Not because she wasn't irritated, though. It was counterproductive to be protesting when instead she could be angling herself just right to...
She flipped herself around just as Jib let go of her and sank her fangs into his hand, biting down as hard as she could. That'd teach him.

Jocelyn gasped in surprise, not necessarily because the bite hurt, but because he hadn’t been bitten in a very long time and it felt highly offensive. “What the hell?! God you’re such a little-“ he broke into a string of curses, hastily maneuvering through the isle while both dragging her forward and while trying to rip his hand free. His free hand grabbed ahold of her nose, pulling it upward in what could’ve been an attempt to rip it off or just to unhinge her jaw.
While stumbling backwards, he rudely stepped on people’s feet and knocked into their shoulders, though they both eventually wrestled their way out of the exit. “What’s your [oops]in’ problem?! All I wanted was some company! You’re so selfish!” He shouted, a tale that might’ve been tragic if he hadn’t told it so often.

Rosaleen finally released him once she was off the bus, turning and spitting his blood onto the pavement with a harsh PFT.
"Someday you're going to have to learn the difference between 'company' and 'people Shengying made hang out with you'," she said, not bouncing the anger back at him. She was content with having annoyed him and given him a couple new pinpricks to think about. "What stupid places are we going, anyway?"

The concerned bus driver took a moment to stare at them before driving off, but Jocelyn seemed entirely unaware, or just indifferent, of all the unwanted attention they were attracting. "You're insufferable!" He shouted at her, voice breaking miserably as he cradled his 'injured' hand close to his chest. It was hardly bleeding considering how deep she'd bitten, but that wouldn't stop him from making a scene of it.
He glared at her for several seconds as she tried to move on from the topic, pouting as he catered to his mild wound. "We're just going to stop by a couple of shops..." He sniffled, then adjusted his glasses and wiped his bloody hand on a small, already stained cloth kept in the inner pocket of his coat. "I know the difference by the way, that's why I wanted to go with anyone other than you. [Oops] me for forgetting how horrible you are to be around I guess." He sighed wistfully, walking off down the sidewalk with the expectation the other vampire would follow.

It would have been very easy for Cvetko to sneak up on them and hear everything the two of them were saying, if they had chosen. Something like respect warmed George’s chest, but he shoved the feeling down. He was more than willing to admit that Cvetko was the most tolerable of his new roommates, but he was going to have to keep the other vampire on casual terms for a while before he could even begin to trust them. They were kind, yes, and they were very quickly proving themself to be thoughtful, but that didn’t mean that George could trust them right off the bat. He raised a hand in acknowledgement, trying to communicate to the older vampire that they could come closer. Shengying had a point. The train doors weren’t going to stay open forever, and George didn’t really feel inclined to wait for the next train. He had lived several centuries, but he still didn’t like waiting around for things. The doors hadn’t closed yet, though. With a firm nod, George began to approach the subway. He cast a quick glance behind him to make sure the others were following (and partially to ensure that nobody else was following) before he slipped in through the train doors and grabbed the seat nearest the door. Easy exit, in case anything went wrong. He wasn’t anticipating it, but the tears had taught him the importance of caution.

Rosaleen rolled her eyes. "Oh gods, here we go," she drawled, stuffing her hands in her pockets and falling into step behind him. "I barely nicked you, and here you are acting like I cut your whole hand off."
She stuck her tongue out at him, still keeping pace a little behind him, her short legs moving fast to keep up with his long strides. Well, it wasn't all bad. Maybe she could swipe something cool at one of these shops they had to go to.

“You bit me! I’m acting like my 'friend' just [oops]in' bit me! That's not a normal way to react to anger, or - or any emotion, by the way! I have every right to be upset." He snapped back at her as they walked, his loud exclamations catching the brief concerned glances of a couple of bystanders.
"Ugh,' he sighed in a tearful frustration as they kept going, annoyed that she was ruining the bliss of his free time by being such a mean, menace. "You know-" he glanced back at her again, "you should really try being nicer. I feel like I do nothing but try and get along with you, and then you do childish shit like that! 'Just something to consider."

Cvetko sped up a little as they were acknowledged, their gait instantly becoming more purposeful now that they knew they wouldn’t be accidentally eavesdropping. Between the fact that they were naturally quieter than any human could hope to be (hearts, lungs, and natural awkwardness), and the fact that they seemed easy to ignore (though that could have been a side effect of their current roommates), it sometimes seemed like more of a challenge not to learn other people’s secrets than to find them out. Not that Cvetko minded carrying other people’s secrets. They just preferred having permission first. Especially with other vampires, who had usually lived long enough to carry more secrets than any human could hope to. They joined the others quietly, stepping up onto the subway and keeping to the back of the group, more out of habit than choice. A moment later, they were settled in a seat near a window and gazing out.

| Shengying | Metro | With George and Cvetko | Shengying trotted with the others onto the subway car, breezing through the doors moments before they closed. They met eyes with their group, laughing a little at the sudden rush to catch it. They wrapped a hand around one of the poles and slid into a seat. They glanced around at the other people in the subway car, wondering where they were going.

"Maybe if you get me some candy I'll be nicer," said Rosaleen flatly, bored with Jib's histrionics. "Anyway, I know 'bitch' is a bad word so I don't think you're trying super hard to be friends with me."
As they bumped past a group of people, blending into the crowd, she lifted a wallet off one of them, tucking it securely away in her oversized jacket pocket. It was a habit by now - one borne of necessity, because sometimes she wanted to pay for things, and no one would let a twelve year old get a job. Not that she'd work voluntarily, anyway. Stealing was easier. They could consider it tax towards her not eating them that particular day.

“What are you, seven?” He muttered, shoving his hands in his pockets angrily. He gave her another cross look over his shoulder as she went on, scoffing. “Not anymore, obviously- but I did try. Up until you and… some of the others starting bitching about how I do everything.” He sighed through his nose. “Plus you’re just mean for no reason.”
“It’s not like I care though. I’ll just drag you around whenever John or Shengying ask, like I’m a [oops]in babysitter. And you’ll bite me in public - with the audacity to say I’m the one not trying very hard to be you’re friend, and - oh. Hey we’re here.” He stopped, hands still in his pockets as he stared at the first shop. It seemed to be a clothing store, not of particular uniqueness.

The metro to the museum was fairly uneventful, besides the rather colorful people watching that New York always provided. There was something endearing, George thought, about the way every person’s life touched for just a moment, the way they were all making snap judgements about each other before heading off on their separate ways. He couldn’t help but wonder what the rest of the passengers thought of him, Cvetko, and Shengying. There was no way they would be able to guess the truth, which was amusing in and of itself. As the metro reached their stop, George moved towards the door, glancing behind to make sure that Shengying and Cvetko were both following. Things had changed a lot since the last time George was in New York, but he had a feeling he was a little more equipped to deal with the city than either of the others. Not because they were incompetent by any means, but just because he had lived there the most recently, and he was small enough to squeeze through crowds with ease.

The ride was relatively peaceful. Cvetko watched people come and go, and people find ways to pass time. They nearly didn’t realize it was their stop, until they caught movement out of the corner of their eye that looked like their companions and blinked, focusing again. The museum would be close to here, then. They got up, moving after the other two and stepping off the metro, watching the crowd around them swirl like a river, or a whirlpool. Everyone was moving in a slightly different direction, it seemed. Most of them were moving smoothly enough not to touch, though…they’d always been sort of fascinated with that ability. To be in a crowd like this, and still apologize if you happened to brush anyone’s arm. “I think it should be near here,” they said, glancing at their companions again, braid swinging lightly.
