Antpaw » It was hot. Hot, dry, and muggy, and Antpaw absolutely hated it. What made it worse was that his pelt was rather thick. It was sleek against his fur, but that sleekest only went so far. Thick was different than sleek, and right now Antpaw wished he could just pull off his entire pelt and lay down in a patch of shade so he could actually cool off. Really he just wanted to lay down somewhere, cool off, and be left alone. He hated this weather, and he was ready for something new. As one of the older apprentices, he had been born right as the dry weather started. It was all he had known really, but it was getting worse, and with each passing day everything seemed to grow hotter and hotter. He had heard talk of days that grew so cold that cats wished for this kind of heat, but that most certainly wasn't the case right now. It was cruel, really, and Antpaw just wished something would finally change. He hated feeling as hot as he did. He wanted to be able to get in some training without ending up feeling all stuffy and suffocated, like the dry air around him was going to close in and suffocate him without mercy. All of this sucked. It sucked, and Antpaw hated it.
The ruddy tomcat let out a low growl as he rolled over on the dusty ground nearby the apprentices' den. It was only sunhigh and already way too hot for him to want to even move, and the hottest part of the day had yet to even arrive. Great, he thought to himself with a flick of his tail. Today's going to be terrible. He lay there for a moment longer, eyes narrowed and tail lashing back and forth in his irritation. He could have lay there for the rest of the day, angry and irritated, if not for an idea crossing his mind that put a smirk to his angular features.
The stream! He knew it was starting to dry up, but there was still plenty of water running through the stream bed, and if the water was always icy cold no matter the heat outside. If he could just get out of camp and get to the stream then he could take a little dip into the water and cool off.
Antpaw cast an amber-green gaze around the camp to make sure no cat was looking in his direction before getting up to his paws and slowly slinking toward the camp's exit, hoping to make it without being caught.

Hazelpaw licked her paw, but saw a tail slip away to the... stream! Whoever this cat was, they had a smart brain! She padded along, soon seeing an apprentice; Antpaw! She silently padded along behind him; she wasn’t sure if he wanted company, but then she stepped on a twig that snapped and made a loud BANG! with the silent apprentices.

Antpaw » It didn't take him long to get to the stream. It wasn't that far from camp, and with not being spotted - or so he thought - he wasn't interrupted in his travels of getting there. Already he could feel a rush of excitement go through him at the thought o f being able to cool down even before he had placed his paws into the water. As he neared, he could easily tell that the stream was growing smaller; it was a sad sight if he was being honest, the once beautiful body of water being reduced to nothing but dry dust cracked from the stress of the heat.
Antpaw padded onward a bit upward, not stopping until he found a dip in the stream where the water pooled just deep enough to come to about half way up his legs. That wasn't terribly deep, especially considering he was a little undersized for a cat of his age, but it was deep enough for him and that was what mattered.
He was just about to dip his paws into the cold water when a loud snap! grabbed his attention. Immediately he spun around, claws unsheathing, fangs bared, and fur bristling like a pine cone. He glanced around with narrowed eyes, looking like he was ready to tear the throat out of anything that had followed him. "Who's th-" The words fell short when he noticed the familiar pelt of Hazelpaw. He kept his formidable stance even after figuring out who it was, tail lashing. "What do you want?" He growled, clearly not excited at the prospect of having company.

“Same reason you are here,” Hazelpaw mewed, trying to stand taller. She wasn’t sure why Antpaw was here, but she thought it was because of the heat, and if so, it was the same reason he was there.

Antpaw » Antpaw stood there for a moment longer, glaring at the molly with a narrowed gaze. He flicked his tail in thought, weighing the pros and cons of keeping her around. Having her around meant his alone time was ruined, but having her around meant an extra pair of eyes to watch for any warriors on their tail. He supposed she could stay around for now, but he was going to make sure he had a few rules she needed to abide by if she wanted to stay.
Flatting his fur, Antpaw turned his back toward Hazelpaw. He gestured with his tail for her to follow him on in as he stepped into the water. He clenched his teeth as the water hit his fur, cold and crisp against him. He stood there for a moment to adjust. Eventually he was able to put stick in his back paws as well, once again letting himself adjust before he turned his attention back to his unwanted companion. "You can stay. For now," he started, throwing her a pointed look. "You start getting on my nerves and I'll either skin you right here or chase you back to camp." Knowing Antpaw, his words weren't an empty threat. He may be small for his age, but he certainly had the personality of a full grown warrior, perhaps even more so than that.

Hazelpaw just plain rolled her eyes at the rude apprentice. She wasn’t here to socialize; she was here to cool off. His threats never happened too. “Mind your business, I mind mine. Unless you’re dying, leave me alone,” Hazelpaw said, confirming the space between them.

Antpaw » A low growl bubbles from deep within his chest at Hazelpaw’s words. He more than likely would have had a scorching comment to throw back at her, but he wasn’t in the mood to keep up a fight. It was too hot for that, even Antlaw realized that. Instead he simply took her words. If she kept her space and left him alone then he would be just fine with that. He still would have rathered being alone, but as long as there was distance between him and Hazelpaw then he wasn’t going to complain too much.
As the cool water rippled over his paws, Antpaw visibly relaxed the tension that had built in his body. He let out a sigh; eyes closing, he slowly lowered his body into the cold water, letting it soak into his thick pelt to release all the trapped heat that had settled inside his fur. Now this felt nice. He could lay in the stream all day if he could, just relaxing and staying cool rather than shriveling up and turning to dust into camp.

Hazelpaw settled into the water ways away from Antpaw. When her chestnut brown paws touched the water, her chestnut brown eyes softened. She shuffled her paws in the water and felt herself laying down in the water. Immediately, she felt better, and took a sip of water which cured her dry mouth.

Antpaw » The red ticked tabby lay there in the water for a good while, letting his entire body cool down thanks to the cold water from the stream. He was starting to get relaxed enough to even purr when a particularly strong gust of wind rolled through.
This instantly caught the tom's attention; he snapped open his eyes and looked around, noticing that the wind had lifted up a cloud of dust not too far from where the two apprentices were. Antpaw lashed his tail, sending droplets of water flying through the now windy air. "A dust storm better not be starting up..." He muttered more to himself than Hazelpaw, honestly having almost forgotten the brown molly was even there. If not for seeing her out of the corner of his eye, he might have very well forgotten her presence.

Hazelpaw was turned away from the apprentice, but her right ear pricked back when she heard Antpaw mention a dust storm. “Ignore it, if it gets bad, we’ll leave. Just enjoy your time here,” Hazelpaw mewled, keeping her eyes closed. She was well aware there was something, she could smell, hear, and feel it, but she ignored it. It wasn’t too terribly bad, was it?

Antpaw » Ignoring the threat of a dust storm was a lot easier said than done, especially when the wind was now buffeting against his wet pelt, causing him to shiver. Even if the wind was warm and carried dust that matched the color of his pelt, the sharp air against his body cooled him down a bit more than he would have liked. Antpaw gritted his teeth in annoyance. The wind hadn't been bad at all today, so why would it be acting up now? It seemed just his luck that not only did he have an unwanted guest, but now the wind was going to potentially pull him away from the one thing he had wanted to do for the day.
Now colder than he would have liked to be, Antpaw pulled himself out of the water and back onto the shore, shaking out his pelt all the while holding his teeth together to keep them from clattering. The wind had yet to really pick up, but he could feel more and more dust collect on his wet fur. "Maybe we should get back to camp," Antpaw reluctantly suggested, shooting a glance toward Hazelpaw who was still resting in the nearby stream. Even if it wasn't bad now, Antpaw had to admit he didn't like the idea of staying outside with the wind like it was. He could easily recall one of the Clan's senior warriors, Fernfoot, having been trapped outside during a dust storm. She had come back in one piece, but due to all the dust that had gotten caught in her lungs she had contracted a terrible cough that not even Gingerlily had been able to fix. Antpaw had still been a kit when that happened, but it was still a memory that stuck to him like a stubborn burr, and it was a memory he didn't want to replay with himself as the slain instead of Fernfoot.

Hazelpaw could feel herself getting cold, and suddenly the stream wasn’t her favorite idea of the day. Dust collected up in her fur, and she shook it off in the stream. She hadn’t opened her eyes yet, but the wind was getting stronger and so was the dust. When she opened her eyes, it was foggy for a second. Then, it cleared and she was able to catch Antpaw looking worried. “Fine,” she sighed. She didn’t really want to return to camp; it was a bit relaxing out here. But, if Antpaw just had to go... When she stood up, a wind whacked her in the side hard, and she lost her paws and fell into the stream. She couldn’t breathe. She flailed around, trying to get somewhere, but she was flowing downstream quickly. The wind and pressure of hitting the water had knocked the breath out of her. She was going away where the water was getting deeper. “Antpaw!” She gasped when her head bobbed up from the water for a moment. Then she went under again. She knew the apprentice wasn’t wanting to save her, but he couldn’t just let her drown!

Antpaw » Truth be told Antpaw would have just left to go back to camp without Hazelpaw. He had no qualms with leaving her out here if she wanted to stay and risk getting caught in a dust storm. He was now cold and getting covered in dust, and the idea of going back to camp suddenly sounded like the best thing he could do right now. Earlier staying in camp had been a terrible thought, but now it sounded like a wish come true. He could warm up, get clean, and maybe have the rest of the evening to himself. If a dust storm really was coming through all Clan activities would be shut down and cats would be made to stay in camp. He'd have all the time in the world to do as he pleased.
Just as he was turning to head back to camp with or without Hazelpaw, a large gust of wind crashed through and cut him right in the side. The breath rushed out of Antpaw's lungs as he was pushed down to the ground, stunned for a good moment until he finally caught his bearings. That was more than enough for him to want to high tail it back to camp, but before he could even take one pawstep forward, he managed to hear his name being frantically called out through the wind.
Not realizing it was Hazelpaw just yet, Antpaw looked around, even his blood now gone cold when he spotted his companion being dragged down the stream. Instinct got the better of him and he rushed forward, pushing against the wind as he sprinted down the side of the stream, doing what he could to catch up with Hazelpaw who was being dragged further and further down. "Try to...try to get to the shore!" He called out, dust being thrown into his mouth as he spoke. Antpaw had to close his eyes as more wind gathered around him and slowed him down in his tracks, but he did what he could to push through and keep running. Even if Hazelpaw had followed him when he didn't want company, Antpaw wasn't about to let a Clanmate be killed on his watch.

Hazelpaw got another gasp of breath and felt hope when she heard her clanmate’s call. She flailed around her legs more, finally getting under control, and felt her paws riding ground. She stood in the water, pulling herself to shore which was hard with the water moving so quickly. She was beginning to not see anything, but then she saw Antpaw. She frantically leaped out of the water, getting a firm grip on the ground, but was pushed over again and tumbled over a bit. When she found ground, she rushes to Antpaw and stayed by his side. Usually, she wouldn’t do this to an apprentice her age; it seemed romantic. But right now, she just needed to keep balance along with Antpaw, so they needed to stick together. “Come on!” She yelled as the wind whipped at her ears, dust filling her eyes and covering her body. “We have to keep going!”

Antpaw » The wind was really starting to pick up now. Dust was flying from all different directions, spinning and swirling through the air relentlessly. At this point Antpaw could barely keep his eyes open without dust flying into them and stinging, causing him to recoil back with a hiss and shut his eyes in response. ”Haz-“ He was cut short when dust flew right into his mouth. The tom spluttered and faltered in his steps, unable to keep up his pace with the stream. He was sure Hazelpaw was a goner at this point. With the wind as harsh as it was and picking up this much dust, there was no way he was going to be able to push through the gale fast enough to save Hazelpaw if she couldn’t get herself out of the stream on her own.
Realizing that his chase was fruitless at this point, Antpaw stopped in his tracks, eyes shut tight and chest constricting as he tried to catch his breath but couldn’t due to the dust kicking up. Fear flared up inside him. What if he couldn’t make it back to camp? What about Hazelpaw? How was he going to tell the Clan she had died out here? The molly was a nuisance in his mind, but she was still a Clanmate, and as prickly as he was Antpaw didn’t want to be the reason a cat had died.
These thoughts were subdued just enough for him to calm down when he felt a cold and wet body press against his own. Through the howling of the wind he barely made out Hazelpaw’s voice, confirming that she had either made it out of the stream and back to him or they had both let a swift end and were now on a harrowing journey to StarClan’s peaceful land.
Hoping it was the first scenario rather than the second, Antpaw nodded. He gritted his teeth and trekked forward, giving it all he got to go against the wind and not be blown off his paws.

Hazelpaw tried to keep herself and Antpaw stable as the stumbled through the wind. Hazelpaw hissed when dust flew in her ears and she couldn’t hear, but that just ended up letting her gag on dust. “Camp!” She suddenly yelled, as if reminding Antpaw. Hazelpaw stumbled along next to Antpaw, gagging up dust and yelling, “Camp!”

Antpaw » Camp. Right, they needed to get to camp, or at least some form of shelter before they really did get swept away for good. Antpaw didn’t want to lose his life in the same painful way Fernfoot had, or have something even worse happen. What if he got swept away by the dusty winds way out of WhisperClan territory? He didn’t know what kinds of dangers lurked out there, and while typically Antpaw would be cocky enough to think he could survive on his own, fear and now adrenaline had him thinking otherwise.
”We gotta-“ A cough racked through him as more dust slapped him in the face. ”Gotta...go other way!” He shouted through the wind. If they could just get their footing for long enough to turn around then maybe they would have the wind pushing them toward camp. Even still, with the wind going against them now it was hard to turn on his paws to head the other way, and he could feel himself stumbling and struggling to so much as lift a paw let alone turn around.

Hazelpaw tried to use her strong body to flip herself around, but nothing was happening. “Camp!” She yelled again. She struggled, but found herself desperately twisting around, finding balance and pulling Antpaw with her. When she took a step forward, the wind immediately slapped her forward, and she could make out the spot she had seen Antpaw’s tail disappear. “Almost... to... camp!” She struggled to get out. “Camp!” She yelled, dust flying in her mouth. Maybe if she could yell loud enough, a warrior would hear her..? “Camp!” She yelled as loud as she could.

Antpaw » With how loud the wind was now howling Antpaw doubted any cat would be able to hear the two of them as they struggled to get back to camp. Even with Hazelpaw yelling loud enough for Antpaw to pick up her words, he doubted a cat further away would be able to pick up on her voice. Even still, it was a good enough attempt, and maybe, just maybe, they would have a cat come to their rescue and help bring them back to camp. Antpaw hated to admit it, but the wind was too strong for his small frame; he was being pushed around and each pawstep was a struggle. He was able to keep balance a bit better thanks to Hazelpaw's larger physique against his own, but it didn't make the trek back to camp any easier.
After a long struggle of trying to turn, Antpaw managed to push himself into the right direction alongside Hazelpaw. He soon risked opening his eyes, and instead of getting dust in them for once he was able to make out the familiar tunnels that led to camp. They were close! If they could just keep pushing on and make it a bit further then they'd be safe. They'd be okay.

Antpaw » They were close. Just a few more steps and they'd be in the shelter of camp. If they could just hold on for a little longer... Or, well, if Hazelpaw could hold on for a little longer. She was doing more of the work than Antpaw was; he wasn't exactly a strong bodied feline. He was lithe, built more for speed and hunting than he was strength and fighting. This was certainly not his forte if anything.
Still pressed against Hazelpaw, he shouldered forward. Just as he did another large burst of wind cut forward, hitting the ruddy tomcat right on the hindquarters. He let out a sharp hiss as he was pushed right off his paws, but luckily he rolled in the direction he needed to go, and despite the fall having rattled him and caused him to, once again, lose his breath, he was aware of his surroundings just enough to realize he had been pushed right into the entrance of camp.

Antpaw » Relief at having made it back to camp flooded the tomcat. He wanted to jump up and thank the stars that they had made it back in one piece, but even with Hazelpaw helping him back to his paws he was still shaking from the cold that had gripped him and the strain the wind had put on his muscles. Rather than breathing steadily he was wheezing for air, coughing with every other breath. He managed a weak, "We did it," before collapsing back onto the ground, chest heaving with each breath he took.
He could have stayed there for longer, but he was vaguely roused by a voice thick with worry. "Antpaw, Hazelpaw! Are you two okay?" Antpaw instantly knew it was Hareleap. He parted open his eyes, finally able to see without getting dust in them, to meet the worried gaze of the tall tomcat. Rather than ask why they had been outside of camp without a warrior, Hareleap went straight to tending to their physical needs. "We need to get you to Gingerlily," he mewed, clearly worried for the two. They must look pathetic, Antpaw thought. Here he was on the ground struggling to breathe without coughing and both him and Hazelpaw were soaked and covered in dust. They probably looked like drowned, dusty rats.
"Rippletide!" Hareleap called out, his voice stern with urgent worry. "Can you help me get these two to Gingerlily?"

Rippletide heard his voice being called and pricked his ears to Hareleap. When he looked down, he saw two sickly looking apprentices; Hazelpaw and Antpaw. “And why were you out?” Rippletide asked. Hazelpaw didn’t want to give away their idea for the stream, so she choked out, “Antpaw and I were collecting herbs, when the dust storm hit.” Rippletide was sympathetic for the two, but was mad for them leaving camp without warrior. Hazelpaw and Rippletide managed to get Antpaw up again, and let him lean on Rippletide. Hazelpaw continued to cough up water and dust while Hareleap helped her. She limped; her muscles were sore and tight at the same time.

Antpaw » Pride would have made Antpaw snappy at the prospect of getting help from any other cat, but right now he was too out of it to fight back. He could barely breathe as it was, and any movement he tried to make caused his muscles to shriek with a soreness he knew was only going to be worse in the morning. He was practically a limp ragdoll as he was pushed up to his paws, relying solely on Rippletide to get him to where they were going. He had vaguely heard something about Gingerlily between the roar of blood pounding in his ears. He didn't like visiting the medicine cat. Her den smelled too sharply of herbs and gross poultices, and visiting her meant he had to admit to being weak, and that was one thing Antpaw hated. But, like he had pointed out, he didn't have the energy to fight back and say he was fine, so he simply allowed himself to be brought over to Gingerlily's den.
Even if the walk was short, it felt like it had taken forever for Antpaw's weakened body. By the time they were there, he could feel his eyes growing heavy. All he wanted to do was curl up and sleep for a good three moons if the coughing would allow him to even get any sleep.
"Gingerlily?" Hareleap called, Antpaw just barely able to hear the deputy's concerned call. "Hazelpaw and Antpaw need you."
Pawsteps echoed in Antpaw's ears. They sounded far away but he knew they were actually quite near. It wasn't long that he heard the medicine cat's voice, her gentle words filled with worry at the state the two apprentices were in. "Bring them in. Quickly. Hareleap, Rippletide, I'll need one of you to stay and help me warm them up," Gingerlily stated with a firmness to her voice that was reserved only for serious business. Typically the molly was soft and gentle, but when it came to her duties she was firm and quick to push her power as medicine cat around.

When Hazelpaw reaches the den, her nose scrunched up with the overwhelming smell of the herbs in the den. She then choked out more water and dust. Hazelpaw tried to warm her frail, cold body by standing against Antpaw and his cold body. She tried to produce heat, but the water didn’t help. “I’m sorry, Antpaw,” Hazelpaw whisper-choked. She brought her big flare eyes to meet Antpaw’s. “I really am.”

Antpaw » While he could hear Hazelpaw, he couldn't exactly respond to her verbally. All he could really do was flick his tail ever so slightly to let her know he had heard. Under normal circumstances he would have snapped at her, telling her that her apology was useless and that it was all her fault they had gotten into such a mess, but he couldn't do that in his current state. And besides, it wasn't like this was all her fault. The dust storm had caused this in the first place even if Hazelpaw should have been more careful in the stream. But right now wasn't the time for all that.
His body trembled as a cough racked through him. He hacked up a large portion of dust that had been caught in his throat. He shuddered again. Was he going to die from this? Was he going to become the next Fernfoot? He hoped not. He wanted to become a warrior. He wanted to be more than just some eager apprentice that had lost his life much too early. Antpaw couldn't die now. He just couldn't.
These thoughts were drowned out of his mind when he felt a tongue rasp over his pelt. He managed to move his head upward ever so slightly to look up and catch sight of the deputy licking his fur the wrong way to get him to warm up. With another feeble glance around the den he watched as Gingerlily quickly gathered a variety of herbs into her mouth. Soon the calico molly was in front of him and Hazelpaw, dropping the weird looking leaves in front of them. "This is thyme," she explained quickly. "Try and eat them. It'll help with any shock you have while you get warmed up."
Antpaw let out a faint groan as he stared the thyme down. He really didn't want to take the herbs, but he was more afraid of dying early than eating what was bound to be a bitter plant. With all the energy he could muster, he leaned forward and took the leaves into his mouth, chewing them into a swallowable pulp between heaving the last bits of dust out of his lungs.

Hazelpaw started at the leaves, her nose scrunched up. Her heart sank a bit when Antpaw hadn’t answered, but he couldn’t really. Hazelpaw leaned forward a bit and sniffed it. It seemed... safe... She took a careful step forward and licked the lead. Disgusting, but what did I excpect? She thought to herself. She tried to eat it, but started choking quickly. She gulped it down which made her feel a bit better. She spat out the terrible scent in her mouth and wrapped her tail around herself, resting it on her small paws. “Hareleap, will we be able to be warriors?” She asked, her voice faded a bit.
