Personally fernxdust is one of my favorite ships and canon couples and it infuriates me that they had such a hard life because the Erins thought them being happy was 'boring'. Give me some good, wholesome background romance any day over all the drama. FernxDust, SorrelxBracken, etc. I personally also didn't feel like Dustpelt was crushing on Fernpaw in a serious way that could be dangerous or icky. I think he was very fond of her and probably spent a lot of time training her because she was Darkstripe's apprentice and I doubt he taught her anything useful. TBH, I wonder if that has anything to do with her being a permanent queen despite, you know, the obvious. I don't remember if we see any period when Dust and Fern are both warriors but aren't mates yet but I've never gotten bad vibes. If anything you should be outraged about SorrelxBracken! She was a kit when he was a full grown warrior. Talk about an age gap. Also Greystripe's parents. I think Snowbird x Scorchfur has the largest age gap in the series, except for maybe Leopardfoot and Pinestar, but at least Leopardfoot was a warrior before she had kits. Also, they changed Graystripe's parents, Patchpelt is no longer his father

I think it's kind of a different thing when two cats who only started showing interest in each other when theyre both adults (read: warriors) regardless of their age gap. Like Thornclaw and Blossomfall are weird to me and I kind of had a "what were they thinking" moment, but at the end of the day it sets off a lot less alarm bells than an apprentice/warrior relationship would, even if the specific age difference might be larger. So, I'm not sure if bringing those up is entirely relevant to the discussion.
Unfortunately, if you really do start to think about these relationships, it is quite creepy that as the Clans are so close knit they do all know each other well from the moment their kits, which adds an unfortunate icky element to many of the relationships for me personally, and is why shipping has never been something I've been particularly interested in when it comes to these books.
This is what happens when your series goes on for a long time and you have a very specific rule that stops cats from mingling outside their tiny population group.

Honestly it makes sense for their society of primitive hunters. We know for a fact that early human populations were very inbred as well, and their life style would have been similar. In fact, early humans actually had MORE prospective mates due to wandering far with animal herds. It's an inevitability for isolated hunter groups to end up with inbreeding.

Personally the incestual ties among the cats, to me at least, have limits.
Siblings, parent-child, and uncle/niece or aunt/nephew come off as strange or uncomfortable for some.
It's rather ironic cause the Erins and their editors tried to avoid those types of pairings moving forward, like in the case of Foxleap x Ivypool/Rosepetal.
Atm, the pairing with the least amount of incest in their ties is probably Fern x Ivy, with less than 1%. Most of the other's are much more closely related, first cousins is pretty common.

unpopular opinion but I honestly don’t care about incest in warriors unless it’s something obvious like cousins or unclexniece or whatever. it’s pretty much impossible for there to NOT be incest pairings of some kind with how close knit the clans are

Yeah, my first thought on Ferncloud x Dustpelt upon reading the reveal in Firestar's Quest was basically "Ew, what?" I suppose the age gap isn't what bothers me, so much as it is the fact that I had thought he was more of a father-figure to her in The Prophecies Begin, not a crush. So, it felt almost like a grooming situation. That was definitely a problem in my interpretation, though, and I would not have noticed that they were related had I not been told. So, I suppose I'm willing to let them slide.

basilbagels - Please don’t necropost! You aren’t supposed to post on threads that are over a month old, and this one is definitely way over a month old. Sand 🎃
