The crisp breeze of newleaf's morning snuck its way into her cozy den, causing the sole she-cat inside to shiver awake. honeystar's golden optics slowly blinked open prior to a wide yawn parting her jaws. all winter the snow had caused her young bones to ache as if she were an elder, but with spring popping its joyful head up she felt rejuvenated. as a newly appointed leader she didn't have time to stall in her mossy nest anymore. the maiden rose to her dainty paws, giving each individual leg a quick stretch before she arched her spine in a final attempt to wake up fully. reluctantly she strolled out of her bramble den in time to watch the morning patrol exiting the perimeter of their forest camp. her deputy, a much older and respected tom, took a seat near the fresh kill pile in order to eat before the others rose.
"good morning, lionstorm. thank you for taking care of that. like always." she purred as she approached the larger feline. lionstorm had been her mentor as a kit, and she found nobody more fitting to be by her side than him. he was firm and experienced yet he always had a soft side for her. for the last moon he had been a saving grace helping her run the clan and fully understand her new responsibilities.
Sagestar's death had come as a shock to the whole clan. the snowy white tom had been their leader since before she was born, and like everyone else she assumed he would continue his legacy for many more moons. unfortunately he had come down with a terrible case of what their medicine cat, foxcloud, described as 'yellowcough'. it was severe enough for the leader to be isolated in a temporary den beyond the camp out of fear of it spreading after a kit had died from the same illness. the once strong leader lost his appetite, and slowly over time grew weaker and weaker despite the efforts of the medicine cats. with his passing a new era started. honeystar quickly made her journey to the moon pool, received approval from their ancestors, and announced at the previous gathering that she would be leading amberclan with the blessing of starclan.
After speaking with lionstorm briefly and sharing a plump squirrel with the fluffy grey tom, she was off to do her mentor duties. lionstorm generally stayed near the camp while she was teaching ferretpaw all he needed to know. ferretpaw was her first apprentice, and at nine moons old he was halfway to becoming a warrior. today the pair would be fine-tuning his tree climbing skills and bird hunting. caution while climbing was important to honeystar strictly because a climbing accident was how she lost the majority of her tail. it had gotten caught between a wooden fence one day when she had snuck off with her siblings to explore the nearby twoleg settlements. the broken bones prevented blood flow, and so eventually it just... well, fell off. gruesome at the time but now a fun story to scare kits.
With ferretpaw's belly full they began their day together. training went smoothly and her apprentice seemed to make her more proud of him every day. of course, as per usual, the tom tried to flirt with her most of their session. he was a little ladies man, and if she wasn't out of his league completely then she would give the poor soul a chance. a tad after sun high they returned to camp where she spent the remaining hours of her day with her sister, doelily. the four clans in the area were at peace currently, and with no ceremonies or urgent business, honeystar had a lot of free time. it wasn't until the moon perked directly above them did the excitement course through her clanmates.
The gathering in a field just outside of heatherclan's territory was always the highlight of the month. the leaders and their deputies gathered on an old broken tree atop a hill while the rest of the chosen cats enjoyed mingling below in the soft grass. like many before her, honeystar led her posse of cats along the heatherclan border close to the fast flowing creek. amberclan was sandwiched between heatherclan and summerclan while frostclan lie across the river that acted as the main water source for every creature in the vicinity.
Honeystar kept to herself, padding along quietly beside lionstorm as her clan chattered like songbirds behind her. it was endearing that they were so pleased to be going. it helped to lift her anxious spirit. the gathering was nerve-racking because she knew the other clans didn't quite approve of her. she knew they saw her position as weakness for amberclan albeit she was determined to prove everyone wrong. once the grassy field came into view her clan seemed to melt away as they dispersed to greet the other two clans that were already there. honeystar's vision wandered to the tree where she spotted quailstar and auguststar making small talk with their deputies. lionstorm began to head towards the others, but honeystar remained within the crowd of warriors.
She averted her gaze to those around her. some faces were familiar, some were not. she kept her head high and posture confident as she slipped through the sea of bodies to be by herself at the edge of the clearing. she took a seat near a flowering bush that recently had sprouted new buds. if the other leaders were to ask about her when the final clan arrived, she could always use the excuse that she was wasn't feeling well and had been off making dirt. now that she was alone she took the moment to breathe, reminding herself that all would be okay. she simply needed to be her normal self, right? the molly that every cat adored. although being a leader was intimidating at such a young age, it was her responsibility that she accepted to the fullest.

It was cold for spring. But it was also too wet but that had to do with the snow melting. It felt like the forest itself was confused, like going through the same motions season after season became so redundant it just slowly forgot how it was supposed to be. The strong mountain winds buffeted his pelt. Shivering, the tom-cat still wasn't used to open fields. In the madness that had ensued after finally arriving to the gathering spot, the handsome ginger tabby tom had nearly been trampled by his own clanmates as they made their way into the field. Everyone eager to speak to the other clan cats or just being able to rest from being a warrior or apprentice.
Accustomed to the steep yet more or less smooth territory of Summerclan, climbing up the slight rocky hillside border, across a moor and into the pine trees to an open field had taken a toll on his body; Aspenheart wasn't used to all this different terrain. Sure when he had to go to the Moonpool, he did have to travel through a little rough river but nothing he couldn't handle. But this was completely different. A rocky terrain plus slight bumpy earthly ground was a pain to his paws. As he entered the field ordinarily he would have gone to meet the other medicine cats but a name mumbled by a few warriors from Heatherclan caught his attention. Ears pricking at the mention of the leader's name his green eyes managed to spot the small feline near some blooming flowers on a shrub. The young ginger tabby took a quick glance back at the four warriors before cautiously making his way to the edge of the clearing to the small leader. He stops a few pawsteps away.
❝Um, its Honeystar correct?❞ His tone was husky and a little unsure as he had never seen this female before in his life. Why would he though? He's a medicine cat after all. Most medicine cats don't even interact with their leaders unless they were sharing a dream they had about the clan or a cat. And they weren't even from the same clan. However, it was always good to make the best of a bad situation since lately he has heard some rumors about this feline. ❝I━ I uh, I'm sorry about your loss... I heard he was a really good leader.❞ He starts slightly glancing around before taking a spot next to her. Green eyes lock onto the side of her head. ❝But.. I think its pretty impressive how your handling things. With your clan and everything.❞ He then gives her a small smile.
[ terrible reply but I'm still waking up. ]
