He listened to the other as he described how he was taught the skill, nodding along to the other's words. Fishing and swimming? Very interesting - it sounded fun! Though, when asked about the water, he only gave a slight shrug. Watching as Zaphire made quick work of catching two more fish. "I don't know - I never learned to swim," he finally responded. He'd been completely on his own, and by the time he'd encountered any large area of water, he'd learned other ways around it rather than attempting to teach himself how to swim. Truth be told, he was more of a climber.
As he spoke of the place on the other side of the mountains, he grinned. Despite his lack of skill, that did sound rather nice. "It sounds really nice," Sarwala commented, glancing at the fish he'd already set near his bag. While he wasn't the best at fishing, he knew how to prepare a catch. He picked up the fish, still attempting to flop to safety. He took a hand and dug his claws in just below the head, effectively cutting its life short before setting it back down in the slow to keep it cold. "Still got it," he murmured to himself, grinning a little.
It was something the hunters had suggested to him if he didn't have any tools on him. If he had natural tools, then he should be using them.

โNever learned to swim? Thatโs easy enough to fix! When we arrive at our paradise, I shall teach you myself. It helps having a tail,โ Zaphire promised excitedly, enjoying the idea of them being able to relax in a new world where the bitter cold was no longer an issue. They could swim and have fun, forget the troubles they faced in the wicked lands of Thoril. โMakes it easier to move through the water.โ
When Sarwala put an end to the poor fishโs life in a respectful, quick manner, he nodded his approval from where he stood. โThank you. Thatโs always my least favorite part. As much as I love food, killing it is not enjoyable,โ he sighed, grabbed one more fish, and made his way back to the shore. His shoes were slightly damp, but he was thankful that he hadnโt tripped and gotten an ice cold bath. It had happened enough times by now that he almost anticipated it happening every time he fished. โBut it has to be done, I suppose.โ
Everything was better with a friend, Zaphire was coming to learn. Stealing, traveling, fishingโit was so much better with a companion to talk to. Especially a companion who understood him the way few people did.

An easy fix? The tiefling wasnโt too sure about that, but he found himself grinning and nodding at the thought. Sure, they had just met, but he trusted the other not to let him drown. Well, he honestly just trusted him. Thus far, he had seen no reason not to do so. โIโll take your word for it,โ he mused. The idea of swimming did sound pleasurable. For now, heโd look forward to it, just like he was looking forward to the idea of being warm without wearing several layers of clothes.
When the other spoke about the killing not being enjoyable, Sarwala only nodded a bit as he picked up one of three remaining fish and repeating the process. โItโs understandable,โ he murmured, setting the second fish back in the snow. He didnโt like it either, but he viewed the quick death as a sign of respect, ensuring that the animal wouldnโt suffer any longer than absolutely necessary. With this in mind, he picked up the third fish to continue the process. โI like to just get it done as soon as possible.โ He thought it better this way.
It wasnโt long before all four fish were quickly laid to rest in the snow, and thatโs when he finally stood from his crouching position. โAlrightโฆ I donโt have a knife, but I can definitely scale them.โ The ex-servant was nothing if not resourceful, and he viewed himself as a resource. โDo you know how to further prepare a fish, though? I was never too great at it.โ It was nice to have somebody with him with a different set of skills. It was nice to have anybody at all that he could easily consider a friend โ it was comforting after all these years of having nothing.

โOf course! Fish is good for a quick meal,โ Zaphire reassured as he returned to shore and took in the sight of his small catch proudly. Happy to be able to provide not only for himself, but also someone else for once. It was nice to feel like he could be important and pulling his own weight in their newfound duo. Quickly and efficiently, he went about flaying and removing the inedible scales from their fish. Found sharp sticks to spear them on before he turned to Sarwala. โDo you know how to start a fire? I can do it, but Iโm not the best with only just sticks. If we had some flint to make a spark, it would be easierโฆโ
As much as he loved wildlife and traveling throughout nature, there were of course some aspects of it that he was not so good with. Starting a fire was one of those he had never quite mastered over his young life.
โOnce we have a fire, Iโll have this fish cooked in no time,โ he cheerily chipped in, grinning from ear to ear. He could already smell the fish cooking. Actually, it mostly just smelled like smoke.
Wait a minute.
No, that was real smokeโstrong and heavy in the air, carrying the scent of sizzling meat and spices. It smelled heavenly and, curiously, he lifted his head to glance around. They were practically in the middle of nowhere. Not too far away, he saw a trail of smoke billowing up from the nearby distance. Who would be living out here, far enough from the main dirt road?

The tiefling smiled when his friend assured him that he knew how to prepare the fish. He found himself merely watching in amazement as Zaphire made quick work of the animals. It was interesting to see somebody else do this, and it always amazed him that people found it so easy to work with fish in this manner. Soon enough, the other was asking about a fire, and he nodded. "I like to think I'm pretty good with fire."
Turning, Sarwala took a few steps away from the river, finding himself back at the trees that were currently sheltering their horses. He got to work quickly, breaking off branches of varying sizes so long as they were dry enough and within his reach. While he would have loved to scale the tree, it wasn't entirely necessary, and he risked being completely covered in snow.
Unlike the other, he didn't notice the smell of smoke, rather focused on his own task. It wasn't until he'd returned to the river side with a fair amount of wood in hand that he saw it. "Interesting... I bet they're hunters," he mused, drawing in a deep breath.
The smell of smoke was a bit stronger than he expected, though it was rather enjoyable to him. He'd always loved most aspects of fire, and the smell of the burning wood was always one of them. "Do you think we should head that way?"

Hunters would make senseโthey often had to stray from the common paths in order to track better or bigger game throughout the countryside. On the other hand, the paranoid side of Zaphireโs brain wanted to assume that they were bandits or rogue criminals. This area wasnโt known for that, as far as he was aware, but he always tried to be wary of the low lives that inhabited most areas. After all, he was oneโalthough, murderers and bandits were much worse than a petty thief like himself. Still, he was curious, and he was often too curious for his own good. โLetโs just check it out,โ he answered, already picking his way through the trees. He hated to leave their food cooking and unattended, but figured that should it be stolen, he could easily find more to replace it.
Stepping over twigs and rocks, footsteps crunching lightly over snow, he followed the trail of smoke like a moth to a flame. Within a few minutes, the campsite came into view, with only one inhabitant sitting by a large fire. Over the flames roasted a whole wild pig, twisting on a metal rack. The man by the fire was gigantic, tall even while sitting down, and clearly an orc if his green skin was anything to go by. He wasnโt looking their way, but even so, he must have heard them coming.
โHave you come to cause trouble?โ The orcโs deep voice broke the silence, low and unfriendly. โI am not in the mood to be robbed or attacked. You will be shown no mercy. Walk away.โ
Zaphire blinked and turned to look over his shoulder at Sarwala. He didnโt know if they should leaveโthe orc didnโt seem very friendly.

By the time he received an answer, he'd already managed to get their own fire going. Fires had never taken him too longer, however, he hadn't gotten much set up in the way of actually cooking the fish. Still, an answer was an answer, he decided, as the set the rest of the wood to catch in the small flame. Glancing back towards the horses, he found himself twisting the ring on his fingers as he spoke. "We'll be right back, okay?" Receiving whinnied acknowledgement from the stallion, Sarwala quickly fell into step behind his friend.
They had only walked for a few minutes when they came upon the source of the fire. An orc with a rather impressive catch. Very interesting... Surely there had to be a few more pigs within a mile radius then. In his lifetime, he realized that they were rather social just as much as they were solitary. Where there was one, there was more not too far away.
The tiefling lost his train of thought as soon as the orc spoke. Well, he seemed rather unhappy with their presence. Catching Zaphire's gaze with his own, he only gave a slight shrug. "No trouble from us - just curious. Didn't expect to see anybody else out here." After all, it wouldn't be wise to come here unarmed if an attack had been their intention. So long as he was standing here, he figured it best to be honest to a point. As far as he was concerned, this stranger didnโt need to know that they had just broken out of the castle. He didnโt need to know that he was still a bit banged up. Should it come down to it, heโd put up a hell of a fight.
โSo, โbout how far from here did you have to go for that pig?" If he had a chance of catching one, he wanted to know now. Plus, he just wanted to see if he could still hunt one down with his bare hands.

At the promise of their being no trouble from them, the orc didnโt so much relax as he did seem to put aside at least some of his aggression. He listened to Sarwalaโs question with a blank expression, but an interested gaze, and gave a shrug of his own broad shoulders. โCaught it a ways back toward the main capitol,โ he said, holding up his thumb to point it in the direction of the city they had just escaped from. โWas wandering on the outskirts of town. Easy catch.โ
The disappointment Zaphire felt from hearing that was visible on his faceโthey couldnโt go back anywhere near the city, not unless they wanted to risk being seen. โAh, well. We just came from that direction. No sense in going back,โ he sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, being honest but leaving about the incriminating parts of the truth.
A voice piped up before the tiefling could suggest leaving, quieter and smaller, but friendly. โYouโre welcome to join us, if youโd like.โ From one of the pitched tents, a head of unruly blond hair poked outside, big eyes the color of spring grass and warm, golden skin. A high elf, which surprised Zaphire more than anything, as there werenโt many left in the land of Thoril. Not after the last war, when most were wiped or driven out.
The orc grumbled out an unfriendly, โDonโt go inviting people you donโt know to our camp, Arun. Youโre asking for trouble.โ
โAnd youโre being a grumpy old man, Kalmin,โ the elf responded breezily, though with a note of fondness. โIgnore him, travelers. You are welcome here.โ

Upon receiving an answer, the tiefling found himself pouting. There were so many reasons as to why they couldn't go back there, and a mile out wasn't enough to keep them from being recaptured. All in all, catching a pig in this area was now off limits. Although, he was also refusing to acknowledge that he had been more in it for the chase rather than the catch. Yes, the pig would be useful and could be kept until the end of the day for food, but that wasn't the fun part of it.
Sarwala had only listened as Zaphire explained that they couldn't go back, and had essentially decided there was no longer a reason to be here until somebody else spoke up. Golden eyes refocused on the area before him, quickly fixating on the high elf. He hadn't seen one unless there were visitors for meetings... It'd been at least a few months since then.
Watching the exchange, he couldn't help but grin a little. The pair seemed rather close and it warmed him a little. Despite having been alone up until yesterday, he did recognize that everyone needed somebody. He wasn't one to deny his social nature, and it was rare that anybody ever truly could. Or, that's how he saw things, anyway. "That's very kind of you," he responded, dipping his head slightly. It was a habit he'd picked up during his years of servitude, and one that likely wasn't going anywhere.
Eyes turning to his companion, he gave a slight nod back toward the way they had came. "Should I get the fish and the horses?"

(( oof this is really short my bad ))
โItโs good for travelers to stick together, no?โ The high elf said with a cheeky and cheery smile that lit up their entire face. He dipped his head politely in response to Sarwalaโs gesture. โAll the more fun to share stories and pleasantries. Please disregard anything Kalmin says. Heโs quite nice once you get to know him, only a bit too paranoid.โ
Kalmin gave a derisive snort. โBetter safe than sorry. Never know whoโs a criminal and whoโs a saint these days.โ
Uncomfortable with the thought of splitting up should something happen to go wrong, Zaphire smiled as he turned to face his friend. โIโll go with you. I can get the food while you lead the horses,โ he offered and followed close behind that other. Over his shoulder, he called to their new companions, โWeโll be back in a minute! Just need to fetch our things.โ

(shhhh it's totally fine!)
The red skinned man grinned at the response. Yes, it was likely better for travelers to stick together. He supposed there were strength in numbers, and varying set of skills made a group that would end up being well provided for in many aspects. The mention of stories was what really caught his attention, however. He always had liked hearing of other's experiences, and this would be no different. It'd be rather interesting to hear the tales the would tell... Or at least that the high elf would tell - as it stood, the orc didn't seem too sociable.
Which was fair.
Nodding to the comments about Kalmin, Sarwala looked to his friend once more. Right - going together would make more sense. "Sounds good!" He'd turned with that, heading back the way they came. Once there, it didn't take long for him to unfasten the horses' reigns. "I haven't seen a high elf in months," he murmured, glancing back towards Zaphire.

(( Thanks! It wasnโt bad, I just didnโt have a lot of time to write or anything. ))
โNeither have I,โ Zaphire agreed as he walked alongside the taller man, with a thoughtful hum. โLast I heard, most of them were driven out of Thoril once the war ended. Too risky to keep them around after they had helped the โwrongโ side. A load of nonsense, if you ask me. I dislike Thorilโs laws at the best of times. The council makes very poor decisions regarding the races here other than the Nords and Bretons. Seems theyโre the only ones who get any proper treatment.โ
By the time they arrived back at their own little camp, the fish had finished cooking and smelled absolutely wonderful. Rather than dig in like the glutton he absolutely was, Zaphire knelt to wrap the fish up tightly to keep it warm and clean, extinguished the fire by kicking snow onto it, and gathered up any loose supplies that might have been lying around. Once he had everything, he approached his mare and cooed to her, โSuch a pretty horse. I bet they didnโt treat you well at all, did they? No, they donโt treat anyone well. Not us and not you. Weโre not important enough for them.โ
Mostly, he was talking to himself, but he knew that it was the truth. Sometimes it helped to vent about such things, even if it wouldnโt change anything in the end. He guided his mate along not too many steps away from Sarwala, eyes on the sky. It would be dark sooner than he would have liked. Colder, too. How he longed for a home that was warm, where he wouldnโt have to hide from guards or the empress and her men.
โLetโs stay together,โ he told Sarwala thoughtfully as they approached their new friendsโ camp. โYou and I. It was lucky that I was able to meet you, but I cannot imagine traveling alone now. Youโre much too fun. Besides, these woodsโthey are cold and lonely. I would feel sad to be out here all on my own. Wouldnโt you?โ

Wouldnโt you?โ He had a point - after the war, a lot of the races had thinned out and essentially vanished from Thoril's confines. It had happened very suddenly, as well. Well, that was because they had been forced out, and those who didn't leave were made examples of... It hadn't been one of the land's best historical moments. No, far from it. After that, everything only seemed to get worse for anybody who didn't fall into either category. "The victors find it fit to make rules that favor themselves," he muttered.
Back at their camp, his companion made quick work of wrapping the fish and putting out the fire. He'd untied both horses by the time he approached his mare, though he'd devoted a lot of attention to his own horse. Kissing his nose gently, he turned and began to lead him besides Zaphire. The trip back to the other's camp wasn't long, though he was just tired of moving through the snow... Not that it was something that would end soon, but he was still tired of it. He was resistant to fire and dealt with heat rather well. Cold? Not so much.
When the other spoke up, Sarwala found himself nodding. He'd been alone for as long as he could remember, and he'd be damned if he was meant to go back to that. "I would... Honestly, though, you couldn't get rid of me even if you tried." His words were accompanied with a grin as he glanced towards the other. "I like being around you, and I'd prefer not to be alone - it's no fun that way." While he had always tended to focus on fun, he knew how he got when he was alone. It really damaged his way of thinking, and for a bit, he had forced people away despite his sociable nature.
When they reached the others' camp once more, he found a study tree close enough to the fire to keep warm and fastened the reigns once more. Even if they just stayed the night, it would be better this way. If he woke up early enough, he could check the area for elk or deer, or just something in general. Something that would provide food for more than a day, was honestly what he would look for.

(( Sorry it took me so long! The semester is over so I should have more free time. ))
โIs that a challenge I hear?โ Zaphire teased gently, a smirk touching his lips, as he ran his hand down the soft flank of his mare. He was fond of her already, though he wasnโt quite sure what to call her. Never had been very good at naming animals, even those he quite liked. Speaking of living creatures that he likedโSarwala was steadily growing on him in the short span of time they had known each other. Despite the sense of mystery that still existed between the two, he felt like he knew the man well enough based solely on their shared struggles and the fact that they were of the same poorly treated species. โIโm only kidding, of course. I agree that doing anything is always better with company, especially company such as yourself. I quite enjoy it.โ
As they returned to the other campsite, he was gentle when he tethered his horse beside Sarwalaโs, and gave her a quick pat on the snout. โIโm sorry you have to be out in the cold,โ he cooed. โWeโll be somewhere nice and warm, soon.โ
With that, he turned back to Sarwala and stuck close to his side, walking with a grin and a rumbling stomach as he sat down from Arun. The elf offered them a half smile, content to let them do as they wished. Zaphire unwrapped the cooked fish and passed two to his friend, before keeping the last for himself. It wasnโt the best tasting meal, considering they had no spices, but the fish was pleasant and well cooked. For someone as hungry as him, who knew what it was like to go without food, it was wonderful.
The sky above was beginning to turn a lovely shade of pink, mostly hidden by the clouds, and he wondered if they should keep moving or rest for a bit.
โItโs nice to see a friendly couple. There arenโt many on these roads,โ Arun commented with a quiet hum and tiny smile.
โCouple?โ Zaphire sputtered, nearly choking on his food.
The elf blinked, vaguely surprised. โYou are, are you not? A couple?โ

Golden eyes shot up at the mention of a challenge. While he was all for this, this most certainly was not one he would be willing to take part in. For a brief moment, he was oblivious to the other's teasing tone. Instead, he simply watched the other and he retrieved his steed, unsure of how he was meant to respond. Was there a response? They'd only known each other for a couple days, so he was aware that he shouldn't be particularly attached to him, however, he'd be damned if he would end up alone again. His worries were quickly silenced, however, as Zaphire assured him that he had been kidding. He only nodded in response, a quiet sigh of relief leaving him.
Before long he was tying up the stallion who was quickly joined by the mare. As the other went to sit, Sarwala found himself double checking both ties. It wasn't that he was worried that the horses would run off, but it was a habit for him. It only took an extra moment, however, and he quickly found himself sitting beside the other tiefling. No sooner had he sat, he was being handed two fish for which he thanked his companion.
He dug in without thinking much of the taste. At this point, his main concern was making sure he had something in his stomach. He'd only been listening vaguely to the exchange between Arun and his companion, really only bringing full attention to it when the man beside him seemed to startle. He turned, assessing him for a moment to ensure he hadn't choked. Frowning a little, he laid a hand on Zaphire's back as he looked at the high elf.
Couple. Interesting word choice, but they were, right? Well, they were travelling together, which made them partners of sorts. "We are," Sarwala confirmed with a slight nod. Despite his time spent in the castle, he'd never been fully socialized, and thusly lacked context on many words. 'Couple' happened to be one of them. Because of this, as far as he was concerned his answer was correct.
