(Thanks. Even if it doesn’t, the freelance is at least sustainable.)
Double’s second strike missed and his hand was pinned with just too much ease for it to be chance. Either something was lacking on his end or somehow Percival had some sort of advantage. He hadn’t seen any sign of bargains with Old Things or practicing arcana, but he’d never hunted someone like that before. He wouldn’t know what to look for.
His panic started to move his feet to try to defend himself despite the warning he was given. He could at least recover easily from most injuries, whatever this man did would be temporary. It would probably still hurt, but he would take his chances if he could still try to get loose.
Percival’s face was too close, and in his attempt to kick the man off his balance, he swung his own head to try to bust his forehead on the man’s teeth. That usually got someone to back down. Any flinch response he could gain could be the difference in being forced into questions and wriggling himself free.
He was almost ready to just forget the whole thing and abandon this face for another somewhere in some other town. He hadn’t been seen yet, not really. Percival only knew this borrowed face. He could borrow another as soon as he was out of sight and just gap it until he found somewhere safe beyond this man’s influence.

There were several low cracks as Percival carried out his threats far more expertly than a human should have been capable. That also meant he didn't have time to move from Double's attempt to headbutt him in the teeth. His head connected and Percival almost yelped in surprise. He had expected Double to back down by now, but the man was fighting scared. Percival wasn't. And he wasn't letting go just because he had just gotten hit in the face. His mouth hurt, but nothing had been broken. That had probably been the intention, but he was a bit more sturdy than that and knew how to take a hit. Even still, his lip had been hit and was bleeding just a little. The vampire grinned, one leg moving to sweep Double's legs out from under him. It was an attempt at any rate. He still had a grip on the attacker's hands (well aware that probably hurt now). "Now that wasn't very nice," he said lightly. "You know, asking nicely goes a long way. Yes, please Mister Percival I would like you to disappear for a while. At least then I would know you were polite." He allowed pressure to build in his hands. "Who sent you? Or am I to expect this limp attack by a human is really going to do anything." Time to play a couple of his cards. Admittedly this could just be an attempted mugging. Or knocking Percival off because of some sort of political deal or some business wanted him gone. Humans were so strange that it was possible. Not likely though. So he was going to bet that this person was neither human nor acting alone. Not a vampire though. But he needed to see if Double would take the bait.

Double still hasn’t broken a bone in a long while, so he didn’t remember how much it hurt until the ouressure was out in to both his hands. He shrunk back against the ground with nowhere to actually retreat, teeth grit and bared in an attempt to not make any noise that could draw attention. The hurt made it hard to keep his form and just for a second the ends of his fingers took a blueish tint.
His mind was so heavily occupied by the broken bones, his kicks started to fail, and then were made no longer an option by Percival. It became horrifyingly obvious at Percival’s words following his action that Double had tangled with something far beyond his skill. He wasn’t human. He wasn’t sure what exactly, because he couldn’t focus to try to piece the signs he’d missed before together.
Percival’s weight was still on his broken hands and having them pulled brought a small pained sound from Double as once again the ache shocked him and his hands became blue and transluscent.with soundly claw-like fingers. He tried to snap them back to the human disguise but his focus was failing him and he couldn’t do much beyond get them to take a more humanism shape with the right number of fingers. He didn’t even know how to answer Percival. Revealing no one had sent him and thus he didn’t have any information could put him at the bottom of the river, but lying and leading the man to think he knew something he didn’t and wanted to know might end the same way after more broken bones.

(I love your OC. He's awesome.)
The vampire's eyes widened ever so slightly when the hands he was holding shifted under his grasp. He could have almost believed he had imagined the blue tint after the original attempt of Double to stay silent, but not the full transformation of the hands. If he had any doubt that this person (well, not a human person) wasn't a vampire than those doubts were gone. This was something else. Something else which was hiding - like him. Interesting. Things had just become a bit more interesting. He couldn't very well let Double go now. He knew that would probably mean either another attack in the future or Double would disappear and Percival would never get his answers. But suddenly the edge of the river seemed too public. "I could just kill you and it would make things soundly easier," murmured Percival. "But I think not." The grip never once slackened on Double's hands - whatever current shape they were trying to hold - but Percival's own hands shifted enough that they were almost covering them from view. Double was on the ground, but Percival leaned over him and said, "If you want out of view, then you best come with me. Honestly, consider your options. By the look of it, I'm stronger. And let me guess ... you don't want anyone to know what you actually look like. If you seem so familiar with my house and my life, then why not come back with me? Or we can continue to see if you're going to fight free. I'm fine with that as well. I'll look human either way. Worst that can happen to me is prison for a couple years. Something tell me you wouldn't last so long if they saw these hands." Considering all the threats, it sounded like Percival would be rather dangerous to follow. He was. But he also wasn't outright planning to kill Double and even doubted he'd do him much more harm. But he did want to know what he was and why he was trying to kill Percival. He figured he'd deserve that much. Annoyingly enough, if Double was allowed to leave Percival would have to leave as well. He would not like to end up out of a nice house just because another non-human might reveal Percival wasn't exactly human himself.

(Aw Thanks! Sorry for the absence, holidays are kinda rough. Hope you had a good new year.)
There had been worse threats. More hopeless situations. Not that Double could think of any that could get him out of this now. Pinned by something else not human and obviously stronger, in a place that could suddenly become very public if his attempt to escape became loud, and with this other beast assuming he knew something that he wanted to know. There was no way out of this he liked.
Follow a strange creature home, or risk the wrath of humans in their masses if he couldn’t hold his form here. He could still fight, as Percival said, but that would be harder with only his teeth left to protect himself. He was trying very hard to keep his expression collected, but the stakes and the pain of Percival’s grip on his hands were taking their toll and his features knit nervously. He couldn’t take too long to think of the offer, he just needed to get out of here.
He’d been in the manor before. He could figure something out. It wasn’t like they’d be alone there. He might be able to pull a fast one on the staff and switch places with someone to get out. Maybe Percival was stronger, but maybe Double was faster. There was no way of knowing until he had to be. He couldn’t help still trying to pull his hands free, or at least loose as his mind settled on the only answer he could see getting him back to his feet.
“I-I’ll follow. I’ll follow, just let go.”

(Don't worry! I dropped off the face of the planet because of all these vacations. @.@ I hope you had a good new year! Mine was decent!)
There was a distinct doubt in Percival's mind on whether or not Double would disappear like smoke if he let go. Then the position would still be very bad. Not impossible for him, but very, very annoying. "A bit," started Percival. "Of time might find you with more options. But I think you'll also find that I'll be thinking of ways to counteract them. Don't try to run. I'll be very close. Close enough that I wont let you escape." Then he let go of Double's hands. The fact that this person - if that was the correct identifier - know enough about him to attempt to kill him was enough of an unsettling thought to Percival that he felt a few more slivers of fear inserting their way into his heart. There was no possible way that Double didn't know his secret. Oh, not the vampire one. That one was well enough hidden that Double's little stalking hadn't turned it up, that was very clear from his surprise. But Percival knew that there was something else he hadn't spent as much time hiding. He had been aware someone had been following him, so he had tried to work around his small ... issue ... but if Double knew than there was no way that Percival could let him go anywhere. "After you," he insisted. After all, Double knew the way as well as he did.

(I didn’t really get to celebrate much but it was okay.)
As soon as Double had his hands free, he pulled them close to himself as he started trying to regain his focus. His hands were only just barely keeping their form, and he needed to ground himself before he could fix the broken bones and he wanted to do it without alerting Percival to his recovery. He’d have to wait for a chance where he wasn’t being watched so closely, which unfortunately might not come until they were inside the man’s house. If he could just hold out until then, maybe it would be a greater surprise and help with his escape.
He was used to not wearing his own expressions, that was just how it was impersonating others. But it had been a long time since he’d really been hurt so it was harder to hide the pain in his grimace. He still narrowed his eyes at Percival when he was told to walk. True he knew the way back to the manor from here, but he didn’t like having Percival behind him at all. It put him even more on edge as he crossed his arms in front of himself to hide his hands, starting to change them out of sight early now. He wasn’t about to let himself be left defenseless in the event of a trick. At least letting them slip back into their spindly default blue appearance would let his bones reform.

(Hope that this last week has been good! I've just started school again. )
Percival followed after Double, his shoulders tense but not as if he wasn't willing to let Double walk. He just wasn't going to let his guard down. He knew that if he did, Double would be gone. If he turned his back, he might also risk another attack. He didn't try for any sort of conversation while they walked. After a second, he did become clear that he had taken up a position by Double that might have almost been protective. He was half blocking him from view thanks to where he was standing. Had it not been for the fact that he kept glancing at Double with the same wary eyes it might have been less nerve-wracking. Reaching Percival's house - one of them - the place seemed deserted. There was probably some servants there, but they weren't in view just yet. Percival opened the door, but didn't go in first. He kept Double in view as he waited. "I know where the servants are at all times," he muttered under his breath so only Double would hear. "If you think of harming them then you will find you regret it."

The walk was terrible. Even with his hands reforming, the pain of the break was fresh in his mind and he wanted the chance to retreat and recover properly. He may be a monster, and he may have done plenty of terrible things to get to today, but little comforts still meant everything, and he didn’t have that right now while he was being moved along by another potential monster who knew he wasn’t human. It wasn’t exactly easy on his fears.
Double only met Percival’s glances with bitter looks, trying his best to find a place to break away and flee on the walk back to the manor, but before he knew it, there it was right in front of him. Had he really not pursued him that far from the manor? He didn’t offer any reply to Percival’s warning. He’d already figured bargaining with one of the servant’s safety wouldn’t get him anything. He’d tried it in the past and learned very quickly that those fortunate enough to be born into wealth had little empathy to those who worked for them. Funny Percival pretended different. It just meant he needed a plan to get out, before he was too far inside the manor to find his way out easily.

There was a glint to Percival's eyes which made it all seem like he was just playing a game. But there was still anger there. He placed a hand to Double's back and, whether Double wanted to or not, the door was closed behind the both of them. Truly, the odd creature was cut off from the outside world. At least as much as the windows allowed. Percival ran a hand through his hair. "Would honesty suit you?" he asked. "Or will there just be tense silence? I know you were trying to kill me. Is there a reason?" Both of his eyebrows arched. There was an option. He could jump to a conclusion and possibly hit something. But if he was wrong it could potentially give Double a weapon against him. How much did he want to give a stranger a weapon? Without hesitation, he said, "If this is Aliissa, then I am sticking to my word. I hardly see the point in removing me from the picture." A knife in the hands of an enemy make them cocky. He would take the risk and hope that one way or the other a fish would bite.

(Sorry about the delay. The pandemic took my job and I had to move)
The chance for escape grew slimmer the more they walked and Double knew it. Percival’s hand on his back made his skin crawl but otherwise his focus on looking for anything to get him out of this was growing. He knew he was entering a bigger panic when just Percival speaking shook his awareness to where it was hard to plan at all. He should have acted sooner, before they’d gotten to the house. He had to avoid the questions. He wasn’t sure who Percival was referring to or most of his guesses about his intent to kill him, but he wasn’t about to let on. He’d never spoken an honest word in his life, he wasn’t about to start now. He kept a small glare on his face, looking anywhere but meeting his gaze. There had to be away out. Even if one wasn’t fully visible, he had to make a way.
Maybe he just needed to find one. Houses this size had more than one exit, usually. He just needed to find it and get out. He continued his glances around the room after he spotted the doors and halls connecting this room to find anything sharp or wide enough to defend himself with if he had to. Not this room, it seemed, nothing he could really use or break to a sharper point. Fine. He’d take the spring and find something in the next room if he didn’t find a hiding spot or exit there. He didnt wait for any cue, he wouldn’t give Percival a chance to grab him before he could bolt. He tore off for the first hall, planning on finding a door to put between them once he had some distance.

(Oh no! I'm so sorry. If I can do anything to help or support, just say the word!) Bolting. Bolting was good. At least, that was what part of Percival screamed that it wanted. It wanted something to run and chase and pull down. It was just hard resisting playing cat-and-mouse. He didn't trust Double out of his sight, even if instinct wanted to have fun. Instead, Percival's body blurred like a badly smudged canvas with the speed in which he moved and he'd squirmed in front of Double, blocking his way, before a normal human could have blinked. "I'm starting to think you don't have the ability of human speech," Percival said dryly. "Or at least no concept of anything like logic. I insult you, no reaction. I try to reason, no reaction." He paused. "What do you want? My wealth? My life? Perhaps my position or connections? If you are working for my enemies than that could all play a factor. I have little ability to guess." His eyes were tracking Double's very movement. "Have you ever tried asking me for what you want? Seems like an odd concept, but by the looks of things you're trying to run anyway. I might as well see what interests you."

( It’s all good, the friends I moved in with are super kind and I’m in a much better place. Part of me moving was a divorce so... I’m doing way way better. It’s a healthier place and I’m happier than I’ve been in a long time despite not having a job.)
Double only barely caught Percival’s movement, stopping with hardly enough space between them to avoid crashing into him. He narrowed his eyes, already gauging his chances at a different escape route. Anything that didn’t result in another fight. He couldn’t outspeed Percival, it seemed, he’d already learned he wasn’t as strong. He didn’t want to have to talk. Talking would reveal he didn’t have anything Percival was looking for, and he’d already been forced into the house. This was the end if Percival got the real answers he wanted.
He was stuck between another retreat or taking the desperate attempt to fight again. Maybe Percival might be surprised if he revealed his hands were recovered in an attack, but that couldn’t be enough for a whole escape. It wouldn’t end well, he knew that. But he couldn’t roll over. He couldn’t. There was a panic he could feel rising in his throat, something he hadn’t truly experienced since the first time he’d been cornered. That had ended badly, it had taken weeks to recover completely, even with his regeneration and shapeshifting. He fell back only a half-pace to put distance between himself and Percival, mouth shut tight as he listened to Percival trying to goad him into speaking.

(<3 I'm glad you're happy! I hope you get a job soon, though, if you can! One that's really good for you!)
Oh not this again. It was infuriating. It was also getting harder for Percival to keep up his patience. It was impossible to win the oddity over with kindness or consoling or violence. Percival certainly didn't intend to get more violent ... there wasn't a point. But what else was there? He took a step back. It was the first sign of retreat he'd given. Then he crossed his arms. Rather than the air of frazzled tension and maybe a bit of pleading, there now seemed to be a cool calmness radiating off him. This impostor, the one who wasn't really human, expected a trick. Or a trap. That was fair. It wasn't either, but that didn't change that he was a closed door to a room which Percival could not enter. "Very well. Leave. Or not. You seemed intent on killing me. I'll make it interesting for you. Tomorrow. Midday. The news will go out that I disappeared in a burning building. This one, in fact. I have other houses, of course. Other assets. But I think we're both aware that we'll both disappear, neither of us actually dying at all ... You wont find me. I somehow doubt I'll find you. But if you are so intent on my death in the public eye, then that you'll have. My actual death?" Percival sneered. "You'll have to get smarter for that. But please. Go." He took a step back, waving his arm in the direction of the door. Double would have to step past him, but the man kept his arms crossed, leaning against the wall as if he no longer cared about Double at all.

(I really appreciate that. I got a small gig doing comic covers for a small company. It’s pretty much commission work, but it’s something I enjoy.)
Double froze up a moment as Percival backed up, but his caution restored quickly as the man spoke. He eyed him doubtfully, still not trusting what he said. However, he took his chance to get himself back by the door, never taking his gaze from Percival.
He was still wrong about what Double he been after. He’d wanted Percival to vanish with no sound or trace, and to slip into the empty place he left behind, just as it had been with every face he’d taken. But now he was stuck as he found the door within his reach. Percival had seen what he was, or at least he knew he was pretending to be human. No one alive knew. Could he really just leave and hope Percival wouldn’t speak of him?
He had seen what Percival could do. He knew he wasn’t human, but he wasn’t sure what he was. Would Percival let him leave knowing this? They were both caught on the same concern, though it seemed Percival at least had a way out. Other houses, just as Double had other faces. He had to think what to do, because it was the first he’d ever seen that there were other things pretending to be human. They clearly weren’t the same monster but he sort of wanted to know.
What was Percival?
He placed his hand on the door handle, looking Percival over again. The door, the easy escape, was some sort of lifeline and with it in hand, he considered taking the risk with his way out so close. He stood a little straighter, frightened by his own choice of action, and he changed. He stood at Percival’s height, clothing and skin melting and reforming to mirror the man in front of him.

(Oh my gosh! That sounds so fun! I have a job teaching online art classes now, which is really fun! But it's basically a lot of the same, ha ha.)
The vampire had expected the oddity of a creature to leave then. It just didn't seem likely that there would be any other outcome. Why would he decide to stay when he had been so desperate to escape before? But Percival understood the inner processes of how Double was thinking - at least this time. He was thinking the same thing. A lot had happened and they were both exposed. It didn't matter where the other went, because as far as the other was concerned there would always be danger. Always looking over their shoulder to see what was happening and whether they were being followed. So when Double did look over his shoulder, Percival was still surprised, but there was some part of him which almost understood why he did. And then he didn't understand anything at all. It was like looking into mirror, only it was making a different expression than him. The one which ad appeared on his face was one of shock, plane and simple. There was no hidden meaning to the way his lips curled into an 'o' or how his eyebrows rose. It took a couple seconds for him to really get his tongue around any words. "I see ..." He didn't. There wasn't much too see. Other than his own face, hair, and eyes. It took several more seconds for his brain to thaw, and then Percival crossed his arms. "So we're both at a bit of an impasse. I know about you ... and you know about me." At least, that was what Percival assumed. Little did he know that Double was more confused about Percival than Percival seemed to be confused about Double. Percival would have been on more uneven footing if he knew all the confidence he had was based on an untrue assumption. "So that's why you attacked me then? To take my place?" Then Percival laughed. Not some evil cackle, but one of surprise and amusement. "Dear ... I doubt you would have thought to ask ... but - well, if you wanted my life so badly, I might have said yes." His eyebrows arched. "What would you even use it for? Destroying my name? Or maybe finding my contacts?" He waved his hand dismissively, as if it didn't matter. "Never mind." He backed up again, found a chair, and sat down, looking at "himself." "The door is still there, of course. But maybe I've asked too many questions? Hum? What's on your mind?"

(It’s appreciated! I invested some time doing a big painting of Double’s real form and restored some of my drive to get an answer ready. I’m happy with how it turned out but I’m hesitant to post it since the way I run dopplegangers, they don’t use real clothing because it makes shapeshifting harder since they generate their own clothes with each form. There’s no genital suggestion (he’s just a blue glassy person-shape) but I haven’t read the rules in a while and I don’t feel risky.)
Double narrowed his eyes at Percival’s comment, knowing no sane creature would just lie down and let him shred them to take their place. It seemed Percival still had a thought that Double was working for someone, that there was an agenda outside of living comfortably. Would it be dangerous to correct him? He’d already made two critical mistakes, and it was rare for his kind to even survive one. Surely fate wouldn’t be so kind a third time.
But Percival still knew. He’d even said so, he knew what Double was, and he needed answers to get the same information to use against the man if he needed to. He had to create some sort of security net to find control of the situation again. He didn’t like the thought, but his only plan he could find was to make a way to keep this new enemy close. A way to know where he was, who he was speaking to, what he was telling them.
After what was probably a very long silence, Double opened his mouth and spoke in Percival’s voice with his hand still on the door for his own security. “I would have just been you, nothing more. But you seem pretty concerned about all these enemies you keep mentioning. Sounds like you could stand to have a body double around to keep them guessing...”

( I'm a mod, so you could ask me. I'm 99% sure that so long as there isn't genital suggestion it's fine. ) The eyebrow that Percival rose was full of sarcasm. "That's what I meant by asking me. Honestly, the whole deal, really. It's rather interesting that you at once jump to the conclusion that I need killing if you want my position. Though I suppose that if you are working for my enemies, me dead would be better than me alive." He steapled his fingers. His voice from a mouth that wasn't his own was odd indeed, but he tried not to think too hard about it. Instead, he carefully considered what Double had said. "The implication here is that you aren't working for my enemies. That's a pretty big step of trust for me to take." He was grinning. The grin wasn't really comforting. "But why not? As I said: ever think of asking? Now test it out, why not?" He waved his hand around, indicating the building he was in. "See what it gets you if you are against me in some manner. I'd be interested to judge it as a test - what about you?" It was a start, anyway. If he couldn't trust Double, and he doubted Double trusted him, then it was just a matter of keeping your enemies close. As for having someone else run about as him? Well ... it would be interesting to see what would happen. "Your name?" he asked. "I have little doubt you know mine after watching me all this time. Or if not a name, then something else? I don't suppose any more information about who and what you are would be forthcoming?"

(I can probably DM it to you just to keep that 1% doubt in mind.)
Double made a bit of a face, an expression that was closer to his own and didn’t quite fit Percival. “This is how it’s always been. Wouldn’t break tradition under normal circumstances...” Even with Percival’a statement, he didn’t take his hand from the door and shrugged with just one arm. “But this isn’t exactly normal, now is it?”
He wasn’t about to admit he didn’t know who Percival’s enemies were, he hadn’t found anything in his stalking to give away their identities. He did assume someone with the wealth and status Percival had meant there had to be folks who wouldn’t be heartbroken to hear something happened to him, but he’d planned on dealing with them as they’d shown up. It wasn’t too different from his original plan, he just didn’t have proper control of Percival’s resources. Depending how things went with Percival now, maybe he could find something salvageable here. Surely Percival wouldn’t shed a tear if one of his enemies suddenly left an empty spot in the world for Double to take over.
“I don’t care to tell you a thing without information of the same value in return.” Double quipped back. That was more of a bluff than anything, he doubted Percival would tell him what he was. He had no desire to say outloud anything about himself. “I’ll answer to almost any name.”

(It's very fun to RP Percival right now.)
"I break tradition as a principle," said Percival with a smug smile. "It keeps you on your toes. Keeps you less predictable. But you do what you usually do, I suppose." The vampire tapped his fingers together, thinking for a second. Then he pointed toward the ground. "This? No. No, not very normal at all. Mostly it's just interesting at this point, with a dash of curiosity." He waited, judging his own face for signs of emotion, but it wasn't like it was easy to read himself. Interesting. He'd have to get better about that. Something told him that his new acquaintance, if there was any chance of Double staying, would be someone he'd have to watch. Either that, or find a knife in his own back. "Information?" Percival asked. The smug smile had shifted to something more along the lines of intrigued. "Something tells me that wouldn't be a fair trade off. You wouldn't believe me if I told the truth and I ... I'm not sure if I can get enough of a read off you to be able to tell if you're telling the truth." He tilted his head back. Names. "I'm not going to name you, if that's what your suggesting. I don't have that right." He shrugged one of his shoulders. "You may look like me, but you're your own being. Maybe you don't have a name - or something you like to be called. That's fine as well. I don't have an interest in disrespecting that." He tapped his fingers together again. Debating. This ... being ... seemed to have an interest in staying. They were at an impasse when it came to both of them knowing about the other. Truly, Percival saw only two options. Somehow, one of them would end up dying - whether that meant killing each other or some other outcome ... or becoming if not friendly than at least willing allies. It was a strange position to be in. "The house is yours," he said, breaking out of his thoughts with a snap. His eyes managed a twinkle. They weren't even negative in nature. Amused, perhaps. But that was about all. Amused at the situation, not Double, though the distinction might be hard to make. "You're wearing my face, after all. Or if you want to call it your face, it's all the same to me." He waved a hand. "What's mine is yours. What you wanted, correct? Well, you have it." He was curious what Double would do with it. "You still have your hand on the door of course," Percival noted. He tapped a finger against his lip, thinking. "One question. You can take the answer as truth or not. So long as it doesn't directly pertain to my ..." here his lips twitched "species. But you can ask one highly personal question if you so desire. Color me bored."
