. When Victoria moved, Ren's gaze was drawn back to her. A charming smile appeared automatically, only to fall into a frown when he noticed her favouring her arm. "Are you hurt?" he asked. "Please tell me it's not deadly. Or, no, fatal. You use the term fatal, right?" He paused when he realized he'd gone from thinking out loud to looking like an idiot. Or maybe a foreigner who was still learning the delicacies of the English language. Yeah, he was gonna go with that one. Made him feel less... idiotic.
Then another idea occured to him. He took a step closer to her. "The creature didn't bite you, did it?" For reasons he would probably never understand, a bite from certain types of demons, including the Epsilon, were fatal to Angels and Descendants alike — with the exception of the Archangels. There was only one thing on Heaven, Hell, and Earth that could kill an Archangel, and it had disappeared from the world centuries ago.

Tori stepped away from him as he stepped closer. While he might have been concerned for her safety, he was still a stranger. One who just happened to appear out of nowhere and carried a sword. A sword! No one in their right minds carried such a weapon anymore. Besides, wasn't that illegal to carry nowadays? While she was terrified out of her mind with the creature he had killed, if that's what you could call it when it just dispersed into smoke, some of her confidence had returned. He looked like a normal human being. Even with a sword, she could defend herself against him. The man might still be able to win a fight if that's his intention, but she could at least make it very difficult for him. In response to his question, Tori simply gave a slow shake of her head, her eyes never leaving him as she did so. As far as she knew, she hadn't been bitten.

Tori's brows furrowed slightly in confusion. Epsilon demons? Demon hoards? Was that what they were? Truth be told, she had thought of the creatures as such before, but she never truly believed that's what they were. Everyone else thought her problems were all in her head, made from her own mind, and they tried to figure out why she thought that way to begin with. Nightmares at best. Something subconscious that her mind put together as it filtered through the information gathered during the day. She could feel the presence of the demon creeping up on her. It was faint, but she felt it, saw a brief movement in the shadows. The man must have seen it too because he had focused his gaze in the direction she had seen the movement. Once more, she shook her head, regardless if he saw it or not. It was all she could do at the moment. She doubted the man knew sign language.

At the comment of her silence, her defensiveness sparked to life. If he wanted to question her, then fine, she would answer. I am not Deaf. I can hear you just fine. As for signing, I'm better at sign language than I'm sure you are. Eyes narrowing a little, she waited to see how he would respond. If he understood her, that'd be a nice surprise. If he didn't, well, what did she expect?

Tori's eyes moved to search the other side of the street. She caught sight of movement in the shadows, but it had disappeared before she had a chance to get a good look at it. Although, she didn't need to. She had seen plenty of them in her lifetime to know it wasn't just a trick of the light. It would be there, waiting. She surprised the urge to shudder as she turned away from the shadows. Now there was the question she had never thought she would hear anyone say. Torn, she faced a dilemma: confide in the person who knew what she was going through, or play into the hands of another delusion. At this point, she really didn't know what to believe. If this was a delusion, just another bad dream, then she had nothing to lose. If it wasn't, well, she really didn't know what would happen. But there was no point in lying. Since I was six, she signed.

I've lost count, Tori told him. They had begun at such a young age where her memories failed her. She wouldn't have been able to count the number of times she had been approached by the creatures, the demons, up to this point. At one point in time, mainly during high school years, there were tally marks in which have kept count of some of the encounters, but looking at them now made her feel as sick as actually dealing with the demons themselves. Why do you care? What are you doing here? How can you see them too? As much as she did want answers, she still wasn't about to trust the man fully until she knew more about him. Acquaintance to Mallory or not, she knew nothing more than his name.

. Well that was... disturbing. Ren hadn't known Victoria's last Guardian, but the guy must have been very good at his job if he'd survived for over twenty years, watching over this girl who attracted more demons than any other Descendant Ren had ever protected. Heck, she attracted more demons in one day than half of his previous charges put together. And despite the Guardian's obvious prowess, demons had still gotten through his defenses and managed to get to the girl. Even if their attacks hadn't come to fruition, that was never a good thing. Tonight was the first time since Ren started protecting Victoria that a demon had gotten past him to her. Was this just a first? Were more demons going to manage to dlip by him, despite his being the best at finding, fighting, and killing them? He didn't like that idea at all.
It took Ren a minute to realize her hands were moving again, and another moment after that for their meaning to register. He gave his head a shake and forced himself to focus. He held up his hand and counted off her questions as he answered them, to make sure he didn't forget one. "Because it's my job to care. Saving you — again. And... because I... can?" He answered the last question haltingly, not really sure how else to answer it.

Sure thing! If I'm not here when you return, I should reappear soonish. My dogs need baths, and since I have three, it'll take time. xD That time, Ren took notice when she backed away from him. He frowned, then glanced over his shoulder to make sure there wasn't a demon sneaking up on him. As expected, there was nothing. He turned back to Victoria, watched her sign her next question — and explanation. His chin dipped slightly. "Ah. Yes. I do sound a bit... stalkerish, don't I? Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. I'm not capable of hurting you, if that's what you're worried about." Only Archangels could physically harm humans, and that was only for truly dire circumstances. The rest of Heaven's Host, Guardians included, couldn't. Ren didn't really understand it; he just knew it wasn't possible.

Okay, so that took longer than I thought. XD And good luck with that, especially if they're difficult at bath time. XD
Tori settled a skeptical look on him, not really believing that statement. He had a sword somewhere on his body. That didn't exactly scream harmless. Then what do you mean by it's your job? she asked. It was only getting darker, and the need to be home, locked in the safety of her room was becoming more urgent. But, other than the one demon still waiting in the shadows, she didn't feel anything else around them. That didn't mean anything though. But she couldn't just turn to leave. What if he followed her home? Of course, he probably already knew where she lived by his previous statements, but she wasn't about to give him her address in case he didn't know.

Lol, tell me about it. Whenever I try to read, it seems like that's the time people want to talk to me the most.
Tori decided it was best to just ignore his question. His smile, while not appearing to have any malice or ill-intent towards her, made her a little uneasy. She continued to back up for a foot or two more before finally turning and hurrying back to her house. Like she always did, she refused to look over her shoulder, afraid of what she might find. There were no demons she could feel around her, but she didn't want to take that risk. However, once she had made it to the safety of her own porch, the woman did take a moment to look about, making sure she hadn't been followed home. For as far she she could tell, no one else was on the street. Before that could change, she unlocked the door and entered inside.

All the time! I read a lot at school while I'm waiting for my classes, and there will be people in my class that will come up and try to talk with me when I clearly have something else to do. XD
Once inside the safety of her home, Tori let out a sigh. Her head rested against the door momentarily, eyes closed and headache once more assaulting her brain. Tonight couldn't get much more worse than it already was, that was one good thing to hang on to. Pushing herself away from the door, she began to head to her room, removing parts of Mallory's make-over as she went. That way, when she reached her bathroom, she was ready to hope into the shower to start the long processes of scrubbing off the make-up.
