"Wednesday will be fine," Ren replied. "My schedule revolves around yours, remember? The demons know better now than to try anything before midnight."
The night was a demon's domain, from the moment the sun went down until it breached the horizon the next day. Many angels, reversely, were left weaker when the sun set. They were still powerful by human standards, but among the supernatural their powers were weakened. Guardian Angels had learned over centuries how to get around that fact, and many of the older ones no longer had to worry when the sun set. Ren was young by angel standards, yet he had the skill and power of a much older Angel. Most demons didn't know that, however, so they often underestimated him. However, Ren had been fighting the demons who came after Tori long enough now that word had spread of his skill, forcing the demons to fight smarter. One of their chosen tactics was waiting until midnight or later to attack, in the hope that he would be weaker then. So far, they had been wrong. Very wrong.

Ren chuckled and ran a hand through his hair. "I guess it's a —" he started.
The front door burst open before he could finish. He was on his feet in a heartbeat, half a second from summoning his sword, but then Mallory swept in instead of a demon and he relaxed.
Mal didn't even shut the door before she started talking. "Okay, we have a serious problem. Our plan — sorry, my plan — is about to go down the drain! Warren just called and said something big came up and now he can't go bowling! What are we going to do? Cam needs to get off his high horse and see you as desirable, and the quickest way to do that is to shove another guy in his face as competition. And now we don't have another guy! What are we going to do?" she said again, finally halting her pacing to face Tori. At which point she noticed Ren, who had sat back down and was trying not to laugh.
His efforts became much easier when Mal suddenly pointed at him and shouted, "AHA! YOU! You can be the other guy!!"
Ren blinked. "Wait, what?"
"Yes! This is perfect! You're much cuter than Warren, plus Tori is so much more comfortable around you than him. Oh my gosh, I can't believe I didn't think if this sooner. You're perfect fake boyfriend material?"
Ren slowly turned his gaze to Tori and said in a stage whisper, "Should I be flattered, insulted, or terrified?"

The sound of the front door bursting open caused her to jump worse than Ren's surprise appearance. Like the angel, she thought some kind of demon had managed to break down the door. But, nope, it was just Mallory, all in a fluster. There was no point trying to get her to calm down when she was like this, so Tori just let her talk until she felt as if she had finished all she had needed to say. That didn't happen, however, until after the situation seemed to go from bad to worse. Terrified. Definitely terrified, the young woman signed to Ren before rubbing her face with her hands. This was just great.
This is exactly why I didn't want to do the plan in the first place, she signed, turning her attention to Mal. You've went and hyped it all up, and now it's about to come crashing down. Ren isn't interested in being a part of this scheme. When would he jump into a hole you've made? We'll just have to say that Warren couldn't make it because he had an emergency or something.

Why would I ask some guy I just meet if he wants to help be my fake crush? Tori asked. No offense, Mal, but you're the only one crazy enough to do that. Besides, I haven't told him anything of the plan because you had Warren for it. Why would I be telling the truth to just everyone? That's how the people you don't want to know we're lying to them find out that we're lying to them. She could believe how persistent Nicole has been in trying to prove that Tori's said guy friend didn't exist. It wasn't like it was completely unwarranted. Up until now, Tori hadn't been big in the dating world. She would hang out with friends, go to parties and hang out with people, but as far as furthering hr romantic life, she hardly been trying anything. It was hard enough to trudge through all the other daily horrors and responsibilities she had, adding trying to maintain a relationship just seemed like more hassle at the moment than it was worth.

Mal opened her mouth to reply, but Ren suddenly sat forward and made a T for timeout with his hands. And Mal, surprisingly, closed her mouth without speaking. Ren gave her a charming smile in thanks, which she returned.
Then he turned to Tori. "Okay, first of all, ouch. Some guy you just met? It's been a whole week since you met me. I'm insulted. Second... Well, actually, that's the only point I wanted to make. But I feel I should add that you needn't worry. If you don't want me there, then I won't go. It's as simple as that. Mal will tell the truth about Warren — the part about his absence, anyway — and you can introduce the guy some other time. No need for shouty hands." He wiggled his fingers as he said shouty hands.

Tori's eyes flickered to Ren as he suddenly sat forward, silencing Mal before she could speak. At his comment of being insulted, she rolled her eyes. You know what I meant, she told him. In a different moment, she might have laughed at his use of "shouty hands," or have at least cracked a smile. Instead, she sighed. I have no problem with you being there. I was just inviting to you join us, was I not? I just don't want you to feel like you're being force to go along with this stupid idea. This plan is shaky enough as it is, and could easily fall apart. If you're fine with being caught up in that drama, then fine by me. You do you. But don't say I didn't warn you.

I can, while the creative juices are flowing so spectacularly. xD The bowling alley was busy, as it always was on weekends. But Mal wasn't worried. Bowling was such a regular thing for their friend group that she had book a lane in advance. She marched toward it now, confidence in every stride. Her bowling shoes dangled from one hand, though her bowling ball was being carried by Ian, who was, as always, a step behind her. Mallory had bought her own ball and shoes after that first time bowling, claiming there was no way in hell she would be wearing or touching the alley's on a regular basis. Waaay too many germs.
As soon as she got to their lane, Mal turned to Tori. "Okay, remind me again: when, exactly, did Ren say he would be here?"
Shortly after deciding on a course of action earlier, Ren had left, claiming he had things to take care of before bowling. He had promised to meet them at the bowling alley. What he hadn't said, of course, was that he would be spending the afternoon and evening beforehand clearing the area of demons. There needed to be as few as possible if he was going to be able to enjoy bowling night.

Unlike Mal, The only thing Tori brought to the bowling alley was herself, keys, phone, and wallet. She didn't care as much about germs like her friend, nor did she have the money to spend on her own bowling ball and shoes. She had other things to save for. So while Ian and Mal headed on to the lane reserved for them, she went to rent a pair of shoes, slipping them on and storing her others before rejoing them.
He said he should be here in thirty mintues or so, Tori replied, checking the time on her phone. He'd be the last to arrive. She knew it was because he was going to scan the area for demons, but a part of her wandered if he just wanted to make a grand entrance. He said not to wait for him to start the rounds. Said we could start whenever the others got here.

The rest if their friends trickled in in ones and twos. Cam arrived first, dressed as if he were out for a night on the town rather than bowling. He was followed shortly by Jake and Nicole. The former greeted everyone warmly; the latter gave everyone but Cam the cold shoulder, and ignored Tori entirely. And the Pax arrived, fashionably late, as always. He had already made a pitstop at the bar and came to the lane with drink in hand. "Who's ready to bowl?" he said, way too loudly.
"Be quiet, Paxton," Mallory admonished mildly. "Obviously, we're ready to bowl. And you're up first."
"Oh, shoot." Pax quickly put his drink down and went to get a ball.
While he took his turn, Nicole turned her cool gaze and snake-like smile on Mal. "So where's the new guy? Did he bail and dump Victoria already?"
Mal shook her head, looking completely unbothered by Nicole's attitude. "No, no. He's on his way. I'm sure he'll be here by his turn."
Nicole glanced at the screen. "Ren? What's that short for, Renold?" She snickered daintily.

Tori was sitting in one of the chairs set by their lane when the others began to arrive. As always, her heart thought it would be fun to sputter and pretend to die at the sight of Cam, who had dressed in Mallory fashion for the evening in clothes much nicer than the ones she wore. Her own t-shirt and jeans suddenly felt plain, but she knew she wouldn't have dressed up even had she known. She gave a small smile of greeting and nodded to him. That was normal greeting fashion for her, and it seemed to be sufficient. Her smile faded a bite when Jake and Nicole entered. The other woman was ignoring her, which was more than okay. She didn't want to talk to her either. It was only a matter of time before that changed.
"Ren is a nickname, Tori responded in the form of text. Yes, she had Nicole's number. She had everyone's number that she had saved for the sake of these moments. She had a group chat set up so everyone could know what she was saying when she took part in the main conversations. "He prefers to be called that over his actual name, which is not Renold, sadly."
