If you don't mind some of the darkest stuff, way darker than other Erin Hunter series, that was dropped in Shifting Shadows.

I don't mind dark stuff - it's one of the reasons I like Survivors more than Seekers and Warriors. I've read these series, but have yet to give Bravelands a try. I want to try it out because I've heard mainly good things and really, it makes me antsy not having read at least the first book. Not the mention Gillian Philip writes the books.

Absolutely. Shifting Shadows wasn't great but books 1-3 are brilliant, and far better than any Warriors book that's been written lately besides maybe Lost Stars

in my opinion, its worth a read (i can even hit u up with pdfs if u want) but I don't think its as great as some people make it out to be. but that's just my opinion.
I will say that yes, book 4 (shifting shadows) does introduce a very.. dark side of things that warrior cats hasn't touched yet, and I did feel actually physically disturbed for a moment there lol. but as far as the writing and characters go, well... it is a kids series. The characters like to make really stupid decisions, and some parts of the book make u just wanna facepalm and question whether you really want to read this. the villain starts out pretty good but the author kind of butchered him near the end. and one of the relationships is really morally sketchy but its painted as normal which makes me pretty uncomfortable
but, i mean, it can get pretty entertaining and its a good way to pass the time if you wanna check it out. I don't regret reading it and will probably continue the series, but I (personally) wouldn't call it fantastic or better than warrior cats.

I'd be interested to talk to you because I didn't feel like [redacted] was butchered at all (unless you're talking about [redacted]). That's a bit of a hot take, haha.

That's a bit of a hot take, haha. sure (btw if I were you I'd edit out the names of the villains since OP hasn't read the books yet and we don't wanna spoil it for em) buckle up this is gonna be long
i definitely have a lot of Thoughts about Stinger but one of my main grievances was that he was a good villain until the end, where he became just.. a shit-tier villain in my opinion. Maybe I just went into it with too-high expectations but I remember just feeling so disappointed near the end of Blood and Bone.
In book one we see that he has a genuine relationship with Berry, Fearless, and Thorn and seems to actually care about the well-being of the troop. It's one of the things I liked about him, instead of being like "I'm gonna kill these two leaders to take over the bravelands because I'm evil" it looked more like "I'm gonna kill these two leaders because they're doing a bad job and I can make a better life for my troop than they can". it felt like he had an actual, real motive
but what was his motive in the end? He was evil just for the sake of being evil, he killed animals just because he wanted to. He had no grand plans to make the Bravelands a better, happier place. all he wanted to do was be evil and have lots of supporters.
I guess what bothered me the most was that everything about him was fake, nothing was genuine. You go into it thinking he loves his daughter Berry and that he cares deeply for Fearless, who he rescued as a cub and raised almost like a son. In fact he spends all of Blood and Bone treating Fearless kindly and showing no anger at him for not killing Thorn, but then suddenly it's like a switch is flipped and he just straight up loses his mind. and thats ANOTHER thing-- he was literally his own downfall, in the worst way
he had everything going for him-- he had Fearless's full, undying support (literally willing to kill for him), he had his troop, he had a bunch of other animal supporters, but the second Berry disappears he loses his shit and basically screams 'yo im the villain everybody', slaps Fearless and tells him he's working with Titan for no reason, and lets the readers know that he never cared about Fearless, or Thorn, or anyone. he was faking it the whole time. That's not very satisfying to me-- you take a good, interesting villain with complex relationships, and then you take all that away with a little 'oh jk he was just pretending!!!'.
i still don't get why he threw that huge fit about Berry when it turns out he doesn't even care about her. like of all the characters you'd think he cared about his own daughter, but nope. In fact the only reason he took her to Brightforest troop in the first place is because he wanted to emotionally torture her mother for... no reason. again. just because he was born evil or something.
