“Oi! Patrick! Jacky! Get yerselves out o’ here, go to work o’ yer not ea’in tonigh’!” A plump woman in a very small kitchen, in a very small house, barked and two young teenage boys. In her arms was a fussy baby. “Katie! Mary! Get in here, start yer chores already!” It seems from every corner of the house children were running around.
This included little Desmond Joseph Riley, with fair skin, dark blue eyes, and curly brown hair. A pretty cute kid. He was used to the chaos, mostly because he lived no other way. The boy bounded into the kitchen ducking below his screaming mother and making his way through his busy sisters. He managed to nab a hunk of bread and butter before weaving back out, just barely being missed by the back of his mother’s hand.
Desmond pushed his way out the front dour of his house in rural Ireland. He took a bite of the bread and shoved the rest in his pocket, saving it for later. He made his way down a long, stone and dirt path, his hand dancing on the white fence that lined it, fencing in his family’s relatively small plot of land. He saw his older brother by two years, John, milking a goat in the middle of the field, their father drunkenly passed out in the morning summer sun beside him. This image, although troublesome, didn’t even phase Desmond.
Desmond made his way to the main road and started walking to town and the port, which was quite a bit away, but the boy had been making this walk for some time now. He would go down to the busiest part of town and try to steal food or money or goods, anything. He had gotten pretty good at pick-pocketing. Desmond figured the best place for him to go today was the dock. ~~~ By mid-afternoon, Desmond was sitting at the dock, sweaty and pockets a little bit heavier than when he arrived. He was eating a small orange that he had grabbed from a crate earlier. He was watching as men in Navy uniforms were unloading from a vessel. He wasn’t sure why, but he knew that he didn’t like them very much. They just seemed so arrogant.
A group of navy-men gathered close to where Desmond was sitting, laughing amongst themselves. The boy hurried to finish his fruit so he could leave and go home. Just as he was standing, he felt a heavy grip on his arm, pulling him back.
“Hello, lad, where you off to?” The tall navy man still gripped his shoulder, his buddies snickering behind him.
“Home,” Desmond said bluntly, trying to shrug off the man and leave, but the man’s grip only tightened. Desmond did not like they way they were looking at him. He didn’t know why, but he knew he had to get out of there now.
“Oh, don’t you want to see our ship? I bet a little filthy peasant such as yourself has never been aboard one.”
“No, let me go!” Desmond said, raising his voice and struggling, just to be knocked down hard by the soldier.
“You ungrateful little- I should teach you respect-" Desmond took this opportunity to roll away and quickly sprint between two soldiers. He was dazed and not totally sure how he got away, but he didn’t stop running until he was away from the dock, away from the town, and heading back home.
Desmond was panting and holding a cramp in his side as he walked, finally reaching the familiar long, stone and dirt path lined by white fence. The sun was close to setting now, and Desmond’s father was still passed out in the field. He groaned and forced himself to run over. He looked down at the few bottles surrounding the man and reached down to take a swig of ale. The boy was parched from all his running today. After a big gulp, Desmond delivered a swift kick to his father’s side to wake him up. “Get up, its almost night!”
“OOF!” the man grunted, rolling over. As he stood up, he picked up an empty bottle and hurled it at Desmond, who managed to side-step it enough for it to miss his head and hit his shoulder instead. The boy took off running towards the house before he could be yelled at or beaten any more.
Desmond could hardly wait to leave his place one day.

"Get away from me, you witch!" screamed a man in his late forties, as he took off running away from the dead-end alleyway he had been lead down by a girl in a black cloak. Under the hood of the cloak, only her sadistic smile could be seen as she watched the gentleman run from her. Yet, the public around them didn't know that the man was a middle-class slave owner who abused his of his women slaves and the girl had a contract for his execution. He ran about a block before turning around to see if he had been followed, only to see that the girl had disappeared from the alleyway. His eyes widen as he whipped around in all directions attempting to pinpoint her location, but it was already too late for him as his slowly fell limp to the ground, a black rose hilt dagger in his back.
Smiling as she bent down slightly, retrieving her dagger while also tucking a midnight black rose into his collar, symbolizing her work. Gracefully, she rose from the position and without a glance back strolled off to the meeting where she would get paid for the assassination of her target. She probably would get her next contract, a new target that she could hunt down. This one had been too easy to entice and fool, she wanted something with a challenge, especially considering her status throughout the seven seas. ____ It took her close to twenty minutes to reach her meeting place, a small little building set-up next to a tavern that was notorious for pirates to gather. Not even her employer was allowed to see the identity of the famous assassin. Quickly, a woman dressed in a hand-me-down dress dropped a purse of coins into the girl's extended hand. She opened the small bag, mentally counting the coins as well as taking into account the weight of the purse. Good enough the girl thought with a smile. She pulled out three of the gold coins from the small purse and placed them into the hand of the woman without a word.
"Thank you," the woman replied before quickly leaving. The girl brushed a strand of red hair away from her face under the cloak, tucking it back before standing tall as another man entered the small building. Hesitantly, he shuffled his way over to her, dressed in rather simple peasant clothing and her expression changed to confusion. There was no way that this man could ever afford her services, but as he reached the table she leaned against he pulled out a concealed letter and a medium sized pouch that jingled full of coins. "Ello I am a servant sent by ye' next employer," the man stated. "Inside this letter is the target and information about them. He also provided half of the payment up front. Do ye accept this contract?"
The girl reached out and carefully grasped the pouch with a curiosity that made her wonder whom her next target was and why she was being paid half in advance. Did her employer believe she couldn't do it without encouragement? Or was this target eluding them so badly that they were willing to give half the money now? She smiled under her cloak before taking the parchment from the servant's hand. "Thank ye for the help," the servant said with a bow before making himself scarce.
Slowly, she unrolled the parchment and began to to analyze her next target. "Age range: 23 years old. Occupation: Pirate. Ship: The Siren's Secret. Name: Calypso Fiore."

At Artem’s question, the girl shrugged.
“Think of it less like we kill you, Artem. It’s more like... well, piracy is a dangerous business and we tend not to protect people with our lives who do not protect us with their own. Resources are scarce here and life isn’t easy; we do not waste supplies, time or protection on those who aren’t willing to protect the ship and the crew. That’s just good business, it’s nothing personal.”
She looked him in the eyes for a moment.
“But for all intents and purposes, yes, we kill you. And believe me when I say I have no problem with doing so myself if you end up posing any kind of threat to the Broken Dagger.”
They continued to walk around the ship for a while, Lilith pointing out the most important features and beginning to explain how the actual sailing of this ship worked. She knew he knew the basics of how to sail a ship, but he wouldn’t know what went in to sailing one of this size. But after a little while she continued to talk to him again.
“So, Artem, what skills do you have to offer here on the Broken Dagger?” she asked
She continued to study him, trying to figure him out. Young, with hazel eyes and dark hair. At first she wasn’t sure there was a pirate in him, but she reminded herself that he had been pretty tough to get here on that little boat, to stand up to the Captain. Perhaps he would make a good pirate after all.
Perhaps he did belong on the Broken Dagger.
He couldn’t belong less than she had, anyway. She had experience for sure but when she had first arrived she had been a mere child. She had been no pirate then. And yet now piracy came naturally to her. Surely something similar could work for this Artem man. The crew needed more men anyway.
But she had asked him about his skills because they had to know if he was going to be a valuable addition to the crew. The captain had taken him on board and accepted him into the crew, but it seemed to Lilith that Artem was probably here just to help the captain achieve some goal.
The question was whether Artem would stay once he had fulfilled his purpose on the ship.
(Okay this is super short and I’m sorry)

“I suppose you are right,” Calypso sighed hearing Clara’s response of most pirates not knowing Homer. And then there was a slight twinge in Calypso’s heart when Clara alluded to not knowing how to read. Calypso felt almost guilty; she was very much aware that she was privileged in being educated.
Calypso Fiore watched as the young woman left to fetch her absinthe. She bent down to retrieve some coins from her satchel, enough for a fair payment to the wench. After stacking the coins in front of her, Calypso leaned back. Her fingers now played at the spine of her journal, as if she were itching to return to it. Calypso knew exactly what her next entry would be.
Calypso’s green gaze met Clara’s blue one, thanking her for the flask, which she promptly placed back into her bag. “Well, if you can’t take it as payment, take it as a tip for your service,” Calypso insisted, “I’m not so attached to this amount of money. For God’s sake I spend most of my time on the Siren’s Song, and I don’t need it there.” She added with a laugh. It’s true, the only time Calypso really used her personal money was when she is travelling to new places and she comes across items with medicinal properties or stationary materials.
Clara wasn't going to argue with the woman who was insisting she take the money, so she smiled warmly and picked up the coins, sliding the extras into a pocket in her dress. Perhaps she would manage to keep the extra tip without her boss knowing, although that hope was quite risky, as he didn't take well to the wenches "stealing from him". Pushing that thought from her head, she focused on the pirate before her. "Well thank you. Let me know if you need anything else," the dark haired woman told Calypso, before making her rounds to the various tables of pirates, checking to see if anyone needed refills, food, or had drunken secrets to spill.

( Flamestar96 Ooh that was so good! I'm so excited and can't wait to see where this goes!
Leo Thanks! And aww we should develop Elena and Calypso's relationship a bit more! When I get to that part of Calypso's backstory I'll need your help because in her bio I said Elena took on Calypso because she could draw, which could be what Elena said, but it seems like Elena is mad smart so could have just been an excuse..
Rusty! Lmao Kieran should try it! I can see Calypso being like uhhhh sir you're drunk, and never taking him seriously.
Now I just have to suck it up and post Calypso's first backstory and reveal her name. I don't know why I'm so nervous, she's my babyyyy.)

“Ana, no! Get down from there!”
The gruff, masculine call came from a dark-haired man. He was average height and stocky. His square face was framed by his thick, dark hair, that was speckled with a bit grey upon further inspection. A few laugh lines were near the man’s eyes, which were a chocolate brown hue. He was likely in his mid- to late-40s. The man was wearing fairly nice clothes, but nowhere near noble-worthy. They told a story of someone who was a professional, but still did their own laborious work.
The man was standing on a busy dock. People were bustling about, packing various cargo supplies into a large voyager ship. Suddenly, a small head with wild, wavy dark hair and vibrant green eyes popped up over the railing.
“Papa! I just wanted to see!” cried the young girl, starting to make her way down back to the dock.
The man couldn’t help the smile that tugged at his lips. “I know, fiore, but a ship is a dangerous place for a little girl. I don’t want you to get hurt.” He attempted to reason, with the 8-year-old who huffed and rolled her eyes in response.
“A pirate is taking over your ship, Amerigo!” A second man was now approaching the father-daughter pair, pointing to the girl in a tone that was mock seriousness. He looked very similar to the first man, but shorter hair, lighter eyes, stronger and younger.
“No Zio Bernardo! Its me Anastacia!” replied the girl, laughing at the adult’s silliness with her.
“Is it now? Oh my, how big you are getting!” Bernardo said, picking the girl up into his arms. Turning his attention to his brother, Amerigo, he asked, “How’s the inventory coming? All set to leave at dawn? That’s 15 months of supplies we need.”
Amerigo nodded, “Yes, right on schedule. Now where is Medici? He said he had an errand for us while we make our stop in Portugal…”
At that moment, a man appeared at the start of the dock. He was in much wealthier clothing and had a serious face. Bernardo set Ana down. Amerigo and Bernardo made their way over and greeted the man. Ana followed, reluctant to be away from the water, but went quietly. She knew by now how to behave when her father had business, not that she often accompanied him.
Lorenzo Medici led Amerigo and Bernardo, and subsequently Anastacia, through a piazza to the nicest building from what Ana could tell, talking business all the way. As soon as they entered, the young girl was struck by the art on the wall. Her pace slowed as her green eyes scanned each picture meticulously.
“Bernardo, stay here with Anastacia, I’ll handle the business.” Amerigo directed his brother. “And Ana,” he added, commanding his daughter’s attention, “Behave, fiore.”
“I will, Papa,” Ana replied eagerly, grateful to be able to look at the art longer.
Her uncle watched her look at each piece of artwork, finally speaking up when she spent the longest looking at a certain work. “Do you like that one, Ana?”
The girl nodded. There were two people in the portrait. Both were laying down, heads at opposite ends. A man and a woman. The man a strong, handsome face and gleaming muscles. The woman had beautiful blonde hair and an elegant body. Ana couldn’t determine who was more enchanting.
“It’s called Venus and Mars, by Botticelli, a friend of the family,” Bernardo said, looking up from the child to the painting. He had almost an identical look as his niece as he looked at the woman and the man, but with a hint of pain in his eyes. “And see the woman? She is based on a woman that married our cousin, Marco. Her name was Simonetta. She died a long time ago, very young.”
“Really?” Ana asked, and after being confirmed asked, “Is the man Marco?”
Bernardo laughed, “Oh no. That’s supposed to be Mars. Our ancestors worshipped him as the god of war. And Venus was the goddess of love. They were in love, according to the stories.” He explained to the girl.
“They had two gods?” Ana asked curiously.
“More actually. Look down here,” Bernardo led the girl to another painting that looked like the same woman in the first, just in armor. “Here is Simonetta again as Pallas Athene, the goddess of wisdom.”
Ana decided this one was her favorite. This goddess seemed strong and intelligent, just like Ana wanted to be. “I want to hear more stories.”
“You’ll learn more than about the Romans, fiore,” said Amerigo, suddenly appearing by himself with a handful of papers. “I’ve arranged for you to be tutored by Angelo Poliziano with the Medici children while I’m away.”
“Really Papa?” Ana asked excitedly, wrapping her small arms around her father’s legs, “Oh thank you!” Ana loved to learn. She couldn’t help it, there was so much to know about everything.
“Of course, just promise me you’ll work very hard. Do not embarrass your father while he is away.”
“What did that cost you, Amerigo?” Bernardo asked suspiciously. “Please don’t tell me you arranged her a mar-"
“We will discuss this later, Bernardo.” Amerigo interrupted. “Now let’s get you home to your mother, Anastacia.”

“Scarlet! What did I tell you about playing outside at this time of day?”
“But I’m right in front of the house, can’t I play for five minutes long?” a small red-head girl yelled back, hardly aware of the descending sun and the dangers that lurked when night fell.
Scarlet heard a large sigh come from her father, but he yelled out two minutes to finish playing instead of her requested five. She gave a big victorious smile as she was given a little more time running along their small fence with a stick. She giggled and struck at a singular fence post, fighting off a make-believe pirate.
“Take that!” She screamed in delight. Who didn’t want to fight the notorious groups of people who sailed the seven seas, looting and causing chaos? “Down goes the pirate!”
“Don’t think it would be that easy to beat pirates, little missy,” a voice echoed from across the dirt road in front of Scarlet’s house. Slowly, a man stepped out from the shadows, wearing a black cloak. Scarlet’s eyes widen as the man started to approach her briskly, hopping over the fence before grabbing a hold of her forearm.
“HELP! PAPA!” Scarlet screamed, but the man covered her mouth with his dirty hand. She tried to slip out of his grasp, but it was no use and she just continued to scream with tears flooding from her face.
The man quickly picked her up and attempted to step over the fence, but a cloth of his pants snagged, a small medallion falling from his pants’ pocket. The door to Scarlet’s house swung open and her father shouted at the man to stop. He started to run at the man holding his daughter, but there was nothing he could do as two more men intercepted her father with cutlasses to his throat.
Scarlet screamed in agony as she watched her father disappear around a corner as the man ran from the home. Not only should she had listened to her father, but now she would never see him again to apologize for her mistake.
