[ okay I think I have an Ari death coming up soon... hopefully it makes people as sad as it did me while I was writing it ] edit: OKAY so I changed the scene a bit. I originally had Amadrya holding him as he died but then decided that didn't make sense with the wound he had so instead she's laying next to him as he dies, which now as I reread it is way sadder anyway. oh, and also, the song that I listened to while rereading was "When It's Cold I'd Like to Die" and just btw that makes it 100times less bearable ]]]

The Hunt
Ari stumbled through the dark alleyways of the city, bounding about the arena swiftly and with purpose. During his first week in the Games, Ari had gained a beyond-acceptable mental map of the arena. He traveled the roads at night, slept on the rooftops during the day, and never - above all else - remained in one place for too long.
The career pack was on the hunt.
He could tell by the cannons that would startle him at odd times. He could tell by the screams that pierced the silence of the arena. He could tell by their heavy footsteps and loud voices that seemed to ricochet off of each and every building.
That was maybe the one benefit that Ari had going for him at that moment. He was alone, quiet, and smart. The District Seven boy knew how to travel safely and effectively - something which was critical in an arena such as this.
Just then, Ari caught sight of a pinkish light illuminate the horizon. The sun was rising, which meant that he needed to find a large building to camp in for the day. Being found would mean death, and Ari wasn't ready to go just yet. He neared the exit of the alleyway, peering out from both sides to make sure that the coast was clear.
All he had to do was cross the street and enter the building which rested alluringly on the other side. Simple.
Peering out once more before making the leap of faith, Ari caught movement in his peripheral vision. Careers. Two of them, strutting through the middle of the street as if they owned the place. They seemed to be walking - no - running in his direction. Macaria and Everest, he thought, registering their faces and jogging his memory of them.
Why only two, though?
Before he could linger in his thoughts any longer, a noise from behind him pierced the air. He jumped, twirling around to face Halina, who had just cocked back a handgun and therefore alerted him of her presence.
"Shit," she blurted out, aiming the weapon at him, "I was hoping you wouldn't - hey!"
Run.
That was the only thought that penetrated his mind at that moment. He bursted into the street, making sure to zig-zag his movement in an effort to avoid any bullets that may fly in his direction. BAM! Just then, a small whiz zinged past his ear, destroying a glass window of the building that he had eyed up earlier.
"Don't shoot!" That was a different voice - Everest's, "It's a waste of ammo!"
It was those few words that told Ari he was surrounded. He pivoted on his heels, lunging away from their direction only to find himself blocked by Alessandro. Where had he come from?
This was a coordinated attack. They had likely been following him for a while now, and had split up to block him from all sides. He glanced to his left, noticing that Sapphire and Amadrya blocked that pathway.
Amadrya.
He locked eyes with her, trying to search her thoughts. She remained expressionless, and instead looked over to one of the others on Ari's right. Ari followed her gaze to the figure of Everest, who looked slightly... worried?
"Well, well, well..." Alessandro's voice broke the silence as the careers closed in on Ari. "If I'm being honest, I thought we'd never find you. Well, if it wasn't for Amadrya, that is."
Ari grabbed a small hilt from his belt, then twirled it in a circle to expand it, revealing his staff. He pointed it at Alessandro menacingly, but the career didn't seem impressed.
"Back off, bitch," Ari snapped, walking towards Alessandro with the staff held firmly ahead of him. Much to his surprise, the District One male retreated a few steps to become in line with Macaria again. Ari spun around, suddenly aware that those behind him were closing in. He twisted and turned each second, fending off any close-approacher with his staff.
They weren't going to kill him. Not yet, anyway. They were going to toy with him - try to force him to make the first move.
"Someone's got a badmouth," Halina pouted, aiming her gun half-heartedly at the boy. Just the simple action of the barrel pointing his direction set his nerve ablaze. He hoped beyond hope that they wouldn't be able to tell how much his heart was racing.
"Not for long," Macaria chimed in, brandishing her knives between her fingers. "Let's give the Capitol a show, shall we?"
With those last words, Macaria gripped the handle of the knife and tossed it over Ari. He flinched, but quickly realized it wasn't directed towards himself.
Amadrya instinctively caught the small blade with her free hand.
"How about it, Amadrya?" Macaria continued, "Wanna send your little partner back to Seven?"
Amadrya clenched the blade tightly, her knuckles whitening. She closed her eyes, breathing in and out slowly.
"Amadrya?" Ari asked tentatively, his voice suddenly quiet. But it was done. His district partner had already chosen her side.
Suddenly, the knife she had once held flew by him, sinking itself into Macaria's arm. The career cried in pain, and with that simple sound all hell broke loose.
Gunshots rang throughout the air, then were quickly and abruptly silenced by Everest, who had somehow managed to wrestle Halina into a chokehold. Ari swung about frantically, dodging a sword swipe from Alessandro and swinging his own staff in return. A satisfying thunk followed by a sudden and violent vibration in the staff told Ari that he hadn't missed.
More gunshots. A canon sounded.
"Ari, run!" He heard Amadrya shout, and he followed her voice instinctively. The young boy lunged towards her, dodging a knife in the commotion. A large gash had appeared across Amadrya's forehead, and more cuts covered her arms. She had been wrestling with Macaria - and had left victorious.
Someone tore at Ari's shirt, causing him to collapse backwards. Sapphire, he registered, looking up to see her begin to bring down a large sword. Ari covered his face and turned just enough to dodge most of the attack. A hot, searing pain dragged itself across his shoulder and back, causing him to gasp loudly.
Another few rounds of gunshots split into the morning, and Sapphire's limp body fell next to him. Ari jumped up quickly, wincing at the pain. Hot, sticky blood began to soak his backside.
You're fine, he told himself, reaching for Sapphire's sword as he saw Alessandro approach him. He swung the sword, but was easily stopped by Alessandro's fists alone, which clenched at Ari's wrists and spun him around.
"Drop the gun!" Alessandro shouted, holding the sword to Ari's neck. Halina was behind him, holding a loaded crossbow in her hands and currently aiming it at the pair of tributes across from them.
Everest and Amadrya stood, bloodied and heaving, approximately ten or so yards from them. Everest held a loaded gun pointed in Ari, Alessandro, and Halina's direction.
"Drop the boy," Everest countered, not daring to flinch.
"Damnit, Everest, listen to him," Amadrya asserted. Everest squatted down slowly, then set the gun down on the concrete next to Macaria's body.
Alessandro released his grip on Ari, then shoved the boy forward, sending him into the concrete. Ari yelped in pain, but not from the impact. From the wound on his back that Sapphire had inflicted. Groaning, Ari began to crawl towards Amadrya.
Halina and Alessandro backed off slowly, knowing that any further fighting would just result in more death. They rounded a corner slowly, then disappeared from sight.
Amadrya raced to Ari's side, followed by Everest - who had paused to pick up the gun and reload.
Ari tumbled over onto his back, breathing heavily and struggling to keep his eyes open.
"Ari?" Amadrya asked tentatively, her voice suddenly quiet. She grasped for his shoulders softly, shaking him.
With a great struggle Ari managed to open his eyes fully.
"Yeah?" He questioned earnestly, then attempted to sit up.
"No, no, no, no," Amadrya said quickly, pushing him back down, "Here, I'm gonna lay you on your stomach, okay? It's going to help the bleeding." With that she waved Everest over and the two of them gently turned Ari over.
"Ahh..." He said with a slight relief. That helped the pain a little bit, "I-I need to get up."
"No," Amadrya stated firmly, putting a hand on his back as if to keep him from attempting. She laid herself down on her stomach beside him, locking her grey eyes into his deep brown ones. "Hey... hey, Ari. Keep your eyes open, okay?" She requested. No tears had filled her eyes, but the pain was evident in her voice. Ari groaned, blinking slowly. He wanted to talk... he wanted to tell her something... anything.
Blood pooled in his wound, spilling onto Amadrya's hand and soaking up into Ari's shirt. It had already began to form a significant puddle around him. One that stretched over to where Amadrya lay, comforting him.
"Your forehead," was all he managed, making Amadrya chuckle slightly. The throbbing, pulsing pain from the cut on her forehead was nothing compared to the fist that clenched her heart.
"I'm fine, really."
"Really?"
"Really," Amadrya assured him, smiling lightly.
Everest stood a respectful distance away from them, holding his gun up and constantly scanning the area. It had seemed that Alessandro and Halina had left for good, but at the moment he needed something to keep him away from the dying boy. It hurt him, not much to see Ari in pain - though he pitied him. It hurt Everest to see Amadrya in pain. Emotional pain.
The kind of pain that wouldn't go away.
He couldn't help but glance back at them once more. Ari laying on his stomach, lying in an ever-expanding puddle of red. And Amadrya, curled up next to him, her hand - covered in the boy's blood - gently brushing his shoulder in an attempt to comfort him in his last moments.
Ari studied Amadrya's face, watching it form into a scowl as she attempted to hide her emotions from him.
"What's wrong?" Ari asked sincerely.
That broke her.
"Nothing," she lied hoarsely, a lump beginning to form in her throat. Tears began to well in her eyes as she watched his face contort with pain.
The two laid there for a long period of time. Ari's eyes would momentarily close, then reopen. Each time Amadrya prepared herself, mentally saying that one of them would be his last.
"I wanna," Ari cried out softly, tears streaking down across the bridge of his nose. Amadrya grit her teeth, leaning in to here his words, "I wanna go."
Amadrya's breaths began to stagger. Why did it have to be like this? Why did it have he have to drift so slowly? In such great pain? She opened her mouth, but no words escaped it.
"I wanna go," Ari repeated, struggling to say the words. He was trying to use up his remaining energy. He had given up long ago.
"You fought so bravely back there, okay?" Amadrya said, wondering if it was harder for him or her to speak at this point. "Y-you don't have to keep fighting anymore." Her words were nothing but a whisper, yet she was sure that Ari could hear her in the stillness of the Arena.
Ari smiled - struggling to do so - and began to breathe more slowly... slowly... until his breaths came to a still. His eyes, which had been locked into Amadrya's, seemed to drift off somewhere directly behind her. A moment passed, and Amadrya stopped brushing his shoulder - instead opting to reach towards his face. She closed his eyelids gently, then carefully - so as to not wake him up - brought herself to her feet.
She stepped back, away from his still body, suddenly unable to comprehend the reality of the Games. Unable to comprehend that Ari was gone.
Gone.
Her frame shook slightly, yet she was done shedding tears. There wasn't much she could do in terms of protecting her warrior-like persona anymore. She wasn't a warrior - she was a kid.
All of them were. Even the careers - one of which had just died by her hands.
Another step back, as if she was trying to escape the moment, and she was in Everest's strong arms. He soothed her quietly, swaying back and forth.
"We should go."

I get why people in America want them though so y’know, you guys do you I guess haha. If you wanna run around shooting things - and each other - none of us can stop you so XD
