Joining the fray here. What a nice surprise this book was, I haven't truly loved or enjoyed a Warriors book in a long time. The team is really stepping up the game here (swiping my fanfiction plots along the way! lol). I'm being swayed by the Ashfur theories. "Loved too much" yeah right! He nearly killed Firestar, that angsty mofo is evil.

All the more reason! Whatever StarClan high council decided it was a great idea to let him in anyway, they were thinking with their tails!

I think Ashfur is the voice in Shadowpaw's head. Because two times it says 'ash' and in both of Shadowpaw's visions of fire it reminds me of the fire scene with Squirrelflight and Ashfur all those moons ago.
