(Hmm, maybe to the day she has to leave. I keep thinking that Nick, to get her used to making quick decisions, often does an exercise with her that makes her chose between a lot of morally grey options. Maybe before he tells her he has to leave, they could be doing that. Like, he might set her up with a scenario that seems pretty cut and dry, but she, being the optimistic and do gooder she is, surprises him with her answer. Which, in turn, reassures him that she might actually be able to win Seth over and help him. Not something we have to rp, but I feel like that should be something we mention in the book. Like, he might not have been able to teach her magic or much fighting, but he at least honed her mind into seeing more than just the obvious answers to problems she'll face.)

(I like it. It would also explain why Nick would have been close to Illirea again. That's probably how Genevieve managed to find him, or at least her spies. But I think we need to figure out exactly what type of mind control she uses and why Seth is immune. Does she use their True Names, like Galbatorix did? If that's the case, I can see her have trouble finding Seth's since there's so many changing details about him, and his name might not have been finalized. Either that or with him having so many complicated aspects, it's harder for her to pinpoint the right name. Or is it some other kind of spell? Or is it a simple factor of willpower? I can see her spell working on pitting her willpower against another person's. The other kids probably were as strong headed, and might have been more on her side when they entered her service, so controlling them was easy. Seth, however, is very stubborn, which makes him very hard to control. I can see that being a thing too. But, no, Anya is definitely the thing that helps him resist her, no matter what the deal is. XD)

( Okay, wow. So sorry I haven't replied to this. I mean, it's not really the end of the world, since I think we were done, or mostly done? But I've actually had this response in my notes for ages. I just wrote it when I had no internet and no service, so I couldn't post it, and by the time I had internet again, I forgot about it. xD BUT, here are my thoughts on Genevieve's and Seth's powers. If nothing else, reading this might shed more light on the both of them. xD
All right, I've had this brewing in my head for a while but I've never actually put it into words before so bear with me and let me know if it's hard to understand. ^^ Right, so. Genevieve in general is a powerful Dragon Rider. We've said that Riders specialize in one type of power but the powerful ones can still do other magic, just not as powerfully as they could if they'd specialized in it. Genevieve's specialization is compulsion, or the ability to force her will onto others. So yes, someone with strong willpower could resist her. But the thing with Genevieve is, she doesn't, like, force force people to do something, even though she could. She wants people to chose loyalty to her, not force it. Yet at the same time, she is forcing it, but not in any obvious way.
Okay, this sounds confusing even to me. Let's try a different way. xD So, Genevieve could tell pretty much anyone to do pretty much anything, so long as she can see the person. A simple "Name, do this," and the person would obey, no questions asked and no choice in the matter. And she does do that, when she knows she'll get away with it. But controlling Riders is harder, because they have their own powers that can sometimes help them resist her. And if not the power, then their dragon could inadvertently shield them because Genevieve can't control dragons. However, Genevieve is old enough and powerful enough that with a little more effort, she could still control Riders younger and/or weaker than she is.
But she doesn't flaunt her power or make it obvious that she's forcing anyone to do anything. She's subtle with it, sneaky. She gets inside people's heads (literally and figuratively) and over many days/years/meetings manipulates them where she wants them by making them think it was THEIR idea, not hers. That's how she gained the loyalty of most of her Order. Then there are the more strong willed people who she'll use other means to ensure their loyalty (bribery, blackmail, etc.) Technically, no one is immune to her power. It's just a matter of finding others who are: a) older than her; b) have more powerful magic; or c) a stronger force of will. These people have a higher resistance to her power, but not immunity.
Seth is the exception, and it's because of a combination of things that have changed and evolved over the years. One, he is a very strong willed individual. Two, he possesses powerful magic. Three, his bond with Stel is incredibly strong. But like I said, those things don't make him immune, just highly resistant. The real immunity for him is a newer development and it comes from his power and his ability to put himself in another dimension.
In doing that, Seth is putting himself outside of Genevieve's reach — like, completely. When he first specialized in this power, he couldn't put himself in another dimension, just objects, but he had to be touching the thing, so he was still connected to the pocket dimension. That was the first step, but not enough to give him actual immunity. But as soon as he became powerful enough to put his whole body in a pocket dimension, and he could use it to travel (so, I guess it would be more like a hallway dimension, instead of a pocket dimension 🤔) that's when, like, a wall slammed down, completley severing any influence/control Genevieve had already worked on him. In the same way being in a pocket hallway dimension mutes the bond between Rider and dragon, it also breaks Genevieve's control. And over time, after breaking her magical hold so many times, he just became immune to it entirely, because his own magic is still growing more powerful, and though he doesn't realize it yet, he has a permanent connection with his pocket/hallway dimension that casts a sort of shield over him. And not just from Genevieve, but pretty much anyone with any kind of mental ability, like mind reading. A mind reader could probably only access the bare minimum from Seth's mind because, in a way, part of him is always in another dimension.
Does all that make sense? )

All of that made perfect sense, and that does put a whole lot into perspective. That would make a lot of sense. Like, I've always believed that she and Ceyon and Genevieve never got along, but he still followed her orders. I just didn't know why he would. But if he's being influenced by her both magically and by blackmail, that would explain a lot. Like, perhaps he's old and strong enough and has a strong bond with Emmer to not be completely caught up in her magic, but she does have something held over him to ensure his loyalty.
And Seth's immunity to it is very much logical and reasonable. After all, as you say, if him entering the dimensions severs the magical link between Rider and dragon, why wouldn't it sever a link to other magic as well. Seth being about to step out of her reach would ensure that her hold on him isn't enough to fully keep him under her control, and eventually won't work at all.
But Genevieve's attitude with the magic is kind of how I'm wanting Tempest to go about it too. Like, she's trained to the point where she can use her illusions without giving signs that's she casting the spells, and has on many occasions used them in everyday scenes to her amusement/get people to do what she wants. It happens so much that there's no telling the difference between the reality and her illusions. Thus causing a lot of trust issues between her and her siblings at the very least.
