Blackstar.
The dude had a tumultuous life. For the entire first arc, he is pretty much depicted as a stone cold villain, a right hand man to two terrible leaders. An easy follower? An admirer of ferocious ambition?
So, what changes? He becomes, more or less, one of the more peaceful leaders ProtagonistClan has to deal with. He is definitely the most stable leader for ShadowClan that we have witnessed in the books. One of his biggest slip ups was the moment of weakness against Sol... and honestly, the reasoning behind that business makes me want to know his perspective even more.
What's the rise and fall? What the heck went on in that big boi's head?
In my opinion, the closest we get to a more personal look at him as a character is Tigerstar's Fury, and I can hardly respect that as a true depiction.
Every time I ponder this character I get like "????".
And it's totally possible that his shifts in character were used more as a plot device for the Erins, but I think it genuinely turns the guy into a potentially interesting character, if the perspective are written in a way that made sense.
What do you guys think? Do you care about Blackstar at all?

I never thought about a Blackstar SE before, but after reading your post you’ve 100% convinced me that this is an amazing idea.

He's worthy of a novella, but not a whole SE

He's worthy of a novella, but not a whole SE No way it'll be possible to fit everything op mentioned into a novella. Besides, I'm more interested in a SE as well

Blackstar or Rowanstar SE, Littlecloud or Runningnose novella. Medicine cats need more love, especially since Shadowclan produces so many good ones.

I think the easy answer is that Blackstar just lacks any initiative or brains to pull off evil schemes without someone holding his hand through them. He's not brave enough either to follow through with the consequences. As Yellowfang said, he was a bully. It was all very fine to be abusing cats left and right when he had the might of Tigerstar and Brokenstar behind him to cushion any personal responsibility, but without them, suddenly it's all on him and he doesn't dare take the risk.

Only issue is I'm wary of a super edition or novella about him because there's a strong possibility that they will butcher it. The Erin's don't have a good track record when it comes to back stories and motivations behind villains, and a morally gray somewhat background yet always there character with no clear motivations like Blackstar might prove to be too much for them to handle. Or worse, they'll try to victimize him in the hopes that we'll sympathize with him, which would make me really hate him.
Blackstar doesn't need a tragic back story or for us to feel sympathetic to him for us to understand more about him and appreciate a story about him. He's actually lived the most interesting life of any of the cats thus far, right there in the thick of pretty much every bad thing that has happened to the clans and often directly helping it happen. I've always looked at him as more of a hitman- loyal isn't really the word to describe him because he's simply carrying out a job. He doesn't care one way or the other and he doesn't think about what he's doing or who he's hurting because he's numb. Maybe start with the first action that got him there.
It also would explain why after becoming leader he wasn't as interested in being "the bad guy" and why he didn't follow in Tigerstar or Brokenstar's footsteps even though he helped them achieve their goals, and it also explains why he never tried to steal power from them even though they both did.
Blackstar is an interesting and complex character, but he might be too much for this series to handle him becoming more than a two dimensional villain.
