Okay so I had this crazy idea that might just work. I don’t know if people will like it but I’m giving it a try.
So, this is a small group roleplay based on the TV show Brooklyn 99. You don’t need to have watched the show to understand the characters or the roleplay, it is just a bit of fun. If you haven’t seen the show, character guides are below to help you get to know the characters.
This is set in a police precinct in Brooklyn, and we’re focusing on the main detectives and, of course, the other staff at the precinct.
As for cases, I think I will randomly generate some cases to assign every now and then, but case assignments can also be dictated by whatever plot stuff is happening. We can kind of figure this stuff out together.
We are using OC characters based on the actual characters from the show. Just claim a character from those below and fill in the form. If you talk to me about it first and fill out a form you can make a couple of minor characters outside the main group of detectives. Enjoy!

Character Summaries
Okay, please keep in mind these are ocs based on the show’s characters so they will have different names and appearances and you can have fun tweaking the personalities. You can go ahead and switch genders around too if you want.
The Raymond Holt - CLAIMED “Why is no one having a good time? I specifically requested it” The captain of the 99. Outwardly staunch, stiffly professional, hardworking, and a stickler for the rules. Inwardly warm and empathetic. Cares a lot for his detectives. Ambitious, stubborn, competitive, very intelligent. Somewhat a parent figure. Ideally an older character.
The Terry Jeffords - CLAIMED ”I’m like a proud mama hen” Sergeant at the precinct. A parent figure for everybody at the precinct. Extremely caring but also tough and with a bit of a temper. Tolerant and diplomatic. The precinct’s champion marksman but has recently lost their nerve for the field. Can be highly strung and anxious. Ideally an older character with kids
The Jake Peralta - CLAIMED ”The only puzzle [they haven’t] solved... is how to grow up.“ One of the best detectives. Leads the precinct in arrest numbers. Childish, but charming. Often opposes authority. Extremely intelligent and calculating when they actually use their brain. Uses humour to avoid emotions. Laid back but loves catching bad guys.
The Rosa Diaz - CLAIMED “tough, smart, hard to read, and scary as hell.” Detective at the precinct. Prone to anger, hates emotion, and very mysterious. Definitely owns a lot of weapons. Seriously nobody knows anything about them they may be a murderer. But also a total badass.
The Charles Boyle - OPEN ”Not the most brilliant detective, but works harder than anyone else” Detective at the precinct. Eccentric, mild-mannered, submissive, critical, hard-working, honest, good-hearted. Strong moral principles, always perseveres. Optimistic, friendly, would take a bullet for their friends. Like seriously don’t give them a chance they will take a bullet.
The Amy Santiago - CLAIMED ”Always trying to prove [they’re] tough” A detective at the precinct - they would argue the best detective at the precinct. Competitive, intelligent, resourceful, ambitious. Also a bit of a teacher’s pet when it comes to the captain and a bit of a nerd. Loves organisation and...binders. A lot. Uptight, neurotic, by the book.
The Gina Linetti - CLAIMED “[I’m] the human form of the 100 emoji” Civilian administrator at the precinct. Snarky, wise, morally ambiguous. Narcissistic, a bit of a kleptomaniac. Watch your stuff, I’m not kidding. Flirty, fun, and generally considered harmless. More intelligent than they let on, and more caring than they sometimes pretend to be. Also definitely the person to go to for gossip

Rules
1) Follow the forum rules - this is pretty simple, to be honest, it's just common sense
2) Be nice to people - I don't want rudeness on this thread. Please don't bring flame wars here - thanks.
3) Activity - I would love for you to post here at least a couple times a week even if it's just to say hi so I know you're around. I know my activity is not going to be great over the next five months or so as I revise for and sit very important exams so I understand lack of activity. Just either drop in every now and then or let me know beforehand
4) Plagiarism - I will not hesitate to take action if I see anything plagiarised from this thread. I'm not kidding about this.
5) Plotting - Please don't be afraid to plot! I don't have any concrete plot ideas so I would love your input
6) Be literate and semi-advanced. I want to see decent grammar and at least 10 lines of role-play. Please try and stick to this. Thank you.
7) Characters - Claim a maximum of two characters. You can mess with the personality of your character, and make them as different from the characters in the show as you like if you want to do that. You can change the genders of your characters too if you would like - whatever you want to do. Basically just have fun with it
8) Cases - I will randomly generate cases and the owner of the Holt character will assign them to detectives. Cases will also be based in whatever is happening with the plot at the time so it’s not all random don’t worry. Holt will assign cases unless someone specifically wants their character to be on a case or it is plot-determined
9) Cussing - Cussing is acceptable as long as it is within the forum rules. Use your common sense; if you think it’s a risk, don’t use the word

She values trust and honesty above all else and is not afraid to be brutally honest and expects the same from others. Woe betide a friend who betrays her. She is prone to anger and violence, and hates sharing emotions with others. She is very skilled at stealth and lockpicking, leading some to suspect a criminal past. Screenname: ƤαƖƖαѕ ✧ Other: Nobody actually knows that her first name is Valentina, they’ve only ever known her as Val and most people assume it is Valerie. But if anyone were to find out her name she would probably kill them if they ever called her Tina. Nobody knows anything about her family or history

She likes to keep up the pretence of a dim witted demeanour but she is actually very observant and intelligent, with a sardonic wit. She is morally ambiguous, snarky and wise. She will mock you but will ultimately give you good advice. As the only civilian in the precinct, her outside perspective is invaluable. She is the eyes and ears of the precinct and always knows all of the gossip. She is fun and flirty and a natural performer, which can make her a little overdramatic at times. She is brave and stubborn, determined to do what she wants despite the advice of others Screenname: ƤαƖƖαѕ ✧ Other: She loves to dance, entertain, and just generally give life some more ‘pizzazz’
Ryan Ellis
Name: Ryan Ellis Age: 42 Gender: Male Television Counterpart: Raymond Holt Appearance: Tall and well built, with pale brown hair that is long enough to run his fingers through and usually kept swept back and neat. Broad across the shoulders, with well muscled arms and chest he is stronger than one might first consider. His eyes are a piercing blue set in a handsome face, with neatly maintained stubble. Personality: Quick witted and serious if life had gone slightly differently for this man you may have had a serial killer on your hands rather than the chief of the 99. Intelligent and somewhat sarcastic, with a good sense of humour once you get to know him. He cares deeply about his people, even if he pretends otherwise. Screenname: Kurai
Beth Morgan
Name: Bethany 'Beth' Morgan Age: 36 Gender: Female Television Counterpart: Terry Jeffords Appearance:The epitome of girl next door, Beth is homely and sweet. She has deep brown eyes and reddish brown hair, most commonly tied up in a neat bun. She is surprisingly muscular and takes pride in her figure, standing 5'6" tall. Personality: Beth is always doing something, being a mum she is the queen of multitasking and handles difficult situations with ease. She is a gentle, nurturing soul who gives incredible hugs. Her squad are her extended family and she will go to great lengths to protect them. She was involved in a hostage situation gone wrong not long after returning from having her second child and anxiety has seen her relegated to desk work. She shouldn't be underestimated however, she is not easily angered but once crossed she is a force to be reckoned with. Screenname: Kurai Other: She has two children 4 and 2 years of age.
Theo Danton
Name: Theodore ‘Theo’ Danton Age: 28 Gender: Male Television Counterpart: Jake Peralta Appearance: Theo’s height and build are fairly nondescript; he is average height with an average build. He is lean but not extremely muscular. He has tan skin. He has a mischievous face with friendly brown eyes. His warm brown hair is generally kept at a maintained length as if it grows much longer than Theo generally keeps it, it tends to start to curl and he has neither the time nor desire to manage his unkempt curly hair. He has some short facial hair, nothing that could constitute a beard. Personality: Theo is childish, a little selfish, and very stubborn. His lack of responsibility is something not admired by either his colleagues or his captain. He can be rash and gets very overexcited sometimes, but he is sweet and cares a lot for his friends. He’s like a puppy in a lot of ways. He loves his friends and will do anything to help them if he can. He is highly competitive and loves to organise little competitions with his friends. He has a good sense of humour and puts a lot of his intelligence into making jokes and playing the class clown, though this is usually to hide his emotions or problems he himself is having. However, he is actually an excellent detective. He never gives up on a case and is very intelligent and perceptive, when he actually uses his intelligence for a good cause. His childish and stubborn nature often brings him into conflict with authority, though he never usually cares. He is a fun and approachable person, very lovable and mischievous for all of his faults Screenname: ƤαƖƖαѕ ✧ Other: His father left Theo and his mother when Theo was about twelve years old.
Ress Lowelle
Name: Cypress ‘Ress’ Lowelle Age: 25 Gender: Female Television Counterpart: Amy Santiago Appearance: A girl with tan features, and hair that is a black color, and eyes that are a dark slate grey. She is short, but tough and incredibly smart. Her hair is short, falling to about her shoulder blades, and her eyes are slanted slightly upward. Her features are sharp, and she is quite muscular for her small size. Personality: Ress is a very sarcastic and passive aggressive person. Meaning she makes a lot of things a joke, and if anyone ever gets her to really open up about it, she’ll tell them it’s how she copes with her job, and it really is. She did join this line of work due to the murders that lain her parents when she was at age 12. Since that time, she became unwilling to stop or break in her goals. Her only remaining family, an elder sibling, watched over her. Not that they needed to for long. As a hard worker, Ress worked through the summer, and through semesters to be able to graduate very early, and finished Highschool at 16, having started her credits in Middleschool. She went straight to college, and while she couldn’t exactly speedthat up, she was done at age 20, and took no breaks with continuing until she got her doctorate at age 24, and went straight to apply for a job. Ress is brutally honest, and joking rude. She’s smart though, and would argue she’s smarter than anyone else. She’s out to prove herself, but she is a big softy. She hates failing, and it’s hard for her to encounter families that lose children, or children who lose family. She prefers to stay away from that direct line of work, and would rather work as a detective, closing herself off. She’s incredibly cruel to those her get on her bad side, and really doesn’t take pity easily. She has always looking up to the director, always hoping to get on their good side and be considered actually helpful. Despite her ambitious ways, Ress is very self critical. She blames herself for many things, and is very anxious. Afraid of just a tiny mistake causing her world to fall apart again, she is very organized. She could be cold, and keeps herself at distance, afraid of closeness hurting her again, and only allows herself to ever talk even partially openly to those who she really trusts, which is mostly just the director. She dedicated, and when she’s locked on a goal, she will never let it go. Screenname: @/lynxleap Other: I hope it looks fine, I had issues thinking up a character that made sense. I didn’t want to make her too smart, but I wanted to really get across that she’s dedicated.

Okay so we don’t have enough detectives for a case yet but I could just do a generic office starter if you want)

Valentina Ruiz headed into work, stepping out of the elevator and walking towards her desk. She was wearing her usual kind of style; black skinny jeans, leather jacket, a lot of eyeliner. She liked her look, and nobody could make her change it.
As she headed to her desk she walked past the desk of the civilian administrator, Alexandra Ackerman, more commonly known as Lexi. She was on her phone as usual but looked up to see the detective pass her.
“Oh, morning... Valeria?” Lexi asked with a raised eyebrow
She had recently taken to attempting to guess Val’s name every morning. Even if she was right, Valentina wouldn’t tell her so. But as it was, the other woman was wrong, so Val looked over at her colleague with a snort.
“Couldn’t be more wrong, Ackerman,” Val said with a smirk
“Screw you, Ruiz,” Lexi replied, without looking up from her phone for a moment “I’m going to find your employee record one of these days with your actual name on it.”
Rolling her eyes, the detective went to sit at her desk. She just could not be bothered to deal with this. She liked Lexi, but she was a little... expressive, maybe, for Val’s taste. She was so dramatic and sometimes it took a lot of work.
Besides, Val had burned the only copy of her employee record not in the captain’s office years ago. Only Captain Ellis knew her real name, and she wasn’t even sure she was comfortable that he knew that much.

Another day another painstaking journey to the the precinct. Seriously why could people not drive in this city? Refraining from swearing he tapped his fingers impatiently against the leather wrapped steering wheel of his prize car, a cherry red Pontiac GTO that was far more suited to cruising along the interstate than sitting in traffic as it was currently. Thankfully it gave him time to listen to music. Jazz was his go to in the mornings, upbeat and soulful, setting the mood for the day ahead. Finally he pulled in to the parking lot, parking carefully in his allocated space, away from anyone who could potentially scratch the paintwork. It didn't do to arrive in an irritated state, so still being early, (he was early in his mind 'on time' was late and as for being late, well that was unheard of) he took a moment to compose himself. Dusting imaginary creases from his pristine uniform and straightening his tie. Happy again he entered the precinct, the shift change was happening and he greeted a few officers leaving to get some rest, the replacement shift had yet to arrive so he settled t his desk and began to sift through the mountains of paperwork and case files that seemed to have appeared as though by magic in his absence. Some time later his receptionist arrived, he could hear her though he did not make a move to greet her. After that the other detectives too began to filter in, firstly Val, a talented detective with a bit of an attitude. Not that he had any problems with that at all.
(Sorry it's not great. new character so still got to get a feel for him though I think he's going to be good fun XD)

Val could see the Captain was already in, as always. He was early every day, she had noticed, and was usually the first person in. Then it was usually Lexi who came in after her boss, though the administrator coming in early never meant anything as she didn’t do much work anyway. Val was usually the third person in after those two, as she was usually a little earlier than some of her colleagues as she lived closest to the precinct. Still, she had never told any of the others where she lived, nor would she ever. She hated telling anybody anything about herself.
“It’s only 9 AM,” Ruiz growled when she noted that her computer was already on the blink.
But she resisted the urge to smash the damned thing to pieces, something she was sorely tempted to do, and instead aggressively rolled her eyes. Instead she would go and do something else while she waited for the tech to properly reboot. It would fix itself eventually, plus she didn’t want to break anything more. She had probably cost the precinct thousands of dollars in smashed printers and computers.
So she stood up, grabbing a slim folder that sat on her desk. She walked across the office with her usual confidence and stepped into the Captain’s office, dropping the file onto his desk. She knew he had a lot of work to do, so hopefully he would be happy to know she was doing her work too.
“Here’s that arrest report you wanted from yesterday, Captain,” Ruiz said with a nod
She had arrested a perp yesterday from a case she had been working for months. It was good to see it pay off, she had been worried she was getting nowhere. The detective had known who the perp was almost from the start on this case, but it had taken so long for him to slip up and give her the evidence she needed to take him down. She was so relieved it had finally happened. Though she would have to appear in court as a witness soon, she was sure. She hated court.
But she also hated doing reports, so she was pretty happy she had sat down and gotten that one written out.

From the seclusion of his office the general bustle of the precinct was somewhat dulled, a soft murmur of discussion barely permeated the shut door. One noise he was well adjusted to was the approaching footsteps of his detectives. His door opened and a shadow fell across his desk. He looked up, his eyes raising in that way they seemed to when he was displeased, or interested, or curious, well no one seemed to know what any of his expressions meant but that was not the point. Leaning back in his chair he gathered the case file, blue eyes flicking quickly through it and nodding slightly as he read. "Is it not customary to knock before entering a superiors office?" He said, voice monotone, eyes not raising from the case file he was studying. It was impressive work, he had been aware of the investigation but had left the detective to her work, choosing to trust her judgement. It had clearly been the correct choice, she had gotten the job done and arrested the perpetrator. He closed the file, setting it to one side and folding his hands atop his desk, that icy gaze fixing the woman before. him. "Good work Ruiz. Your patience clearly paid off. Perhaps a sentiment you could extend to the technology in the bullpen." He raised an eyebrow though the comment was meant mostly in jest. He was lucky, those assigned to him were all exceptional at their jobs. Of course he wouldn't tolerate them if that wasn't the case but perhaps that was a thought he would keep to himself.

Another of Captain Ellis’ expressions. Val could never figure out how he was feeling, something perhaps the two of them had in common. Though she thought she was a little more expressive than her captain. It was simply that the others were intimidated by her. Which was just the way she liked it.
She acknowledged his comment about knocking, but only with a slight dip of her head. She didn’t do apologies, but she would certainly note the captain’s apparent displeasure. At least from what she gleaned from his words rather than his emotionless tone and expression.
She almost felt a smile tugging her lips at the captain’s jest, but instead she threw a glance at the computer at her desk, which was visible from the captain’s office. She didn’t like to smile, and so she avoided it if possible.
“The perps are supposed to get on my nerves,” Ruiz responded “the computers are supposed to help me do my job. They do less work than Ackerman.”
She could tell Lexi had heard her because she could see the woman giving a rude gesture from her desk, all the while without looking up from her phone. Ruiz chose not to respond - she’s get her revenge later - but turned her gaze back towards the captain.
“Listen, Captain, about that case. I’m going to attend when he’s in court as a witness. I don’t do court, I always mess it up. I don’t suppose you have a few pointers that might help? I don’t want all my work to go to waste if he doesn’t go down for what he did.”
She was being honest, more honest than she usually was. She would never usually say that she couldn’t do something, but now wasn’t the time for pride. This guy had to go down and she would need to make sure that she was doing everything she could to help. She was not going to be the reason he went free.

He raised an eyebrow, observing the stoic figure before him. Keeping ones emotions in check was a useful skill, one he had certainly had amongst his arsenal and respected when he found it in others. Ruiz was an interesting one, the emotion she seemed to exhibit most often was anger though he had learned in his short time as captain of this precinct that she also had a well tuned sense of humour. Her comment on the administrator and her lacklustre work ethic was met with a subtle tilt of his head, he had of course considered Ackerman and what seemed to be a non-existent desire to do anything that the job description actually outlined. She was an anomaly, something he couldn't quite explain and he had yet to work out how she benefited the precinct. He gave no actual response however and left the comment open ended.
It was a rare moment when any established detective asked for help, but more so when that detective was Val Ruiz, who took everything in her stride and never needed anything from anyone else. If he was a lesser man perhaps he would have been flattered by her request for assistance. He wasn't however, it was a vital part of his job to support his detectives in all aspects of their jobs. Their willingness to ask his help should be assured. "I would be happy to offer some words of wisdom. Are there any particular areas you struggle with?" He gestured to the chair that faced him, a wordless offering to take a seat. No one enjoyed attending court, where some sleazy lawyer tried to pick as much of your investigation apart, investigations that had often consumed the lives of the officers working on them for many months before reaching the courts.

When the captain offered Val a seat, the woman obliged, sitting so she could talk to the captain. She didn’t like asking for help, but she would rather go to him than one of the other detectives or Lexi. They were all pretty observant people, but she wasn’t sure they could see through her the way the captain did. The captain’s uncanny ability to see who she really was both terrified her and made her more comfortable. With the others she didn’t want to open up to them, didn’t want to be vulnerable. With the captain she didn’t need to worry about it because he already seemed to know her without even trying.
“Well, I’m sure this is going to come as a great surprise to you,” Val said, joking a little but then growing more serious “but juries don’t like me. I don’t make the right impression and I get aggressive in court. If I don’t make the right impression the lawyer could make me look stupid on the stand.”
The truth was, she got nervous in court. She would never say so, at least not in public, but that was what it was. She didn’t really like public speaking. She could talk to the other detectives at briefings but she got nervous in courtrooms. There were always a lot of people and it was a hostile environment.
Plus she knew her appearance didn’t help. Juries judged people instantly on how they looked. Perhaps she would need to find something more appropriate to wear when she was in court. And maybe not scowling might help.
She knew the captain was a good person to talk to because he, like her, didn’t express emotions well. He surely had been in court many times before and won over juries. He had to have something, anything to say that could help her. He was the person most similar to her in the entire precinct, and he was probably the smartest of everyone here too. She trusted him for good advice.

It was difficult to suppress the coy smile that toyed at the edge of his lips, not a judgemental smile but one of understanding and perhaps a little amusement at the phrasing of her comment. Of course it was no surprise, she was a fantastic detective because of her intimidating nature and her perhaps antagonistic appearance. But that wasn't the way one succeeded with juries, any hint of anger, or irritation would be played upon by the defence, and could even support an argument of forced confession. Though the smile played softly at the corner of his mouth his pale blue eyes reflected just how seriously he took her concerns. Pleased she would rather discuss than face court unprepared and potentially lose the case she had work so hard for. "When you have attended court previously have you worn your civilian clothes?" He adjusted his notepad, having noticed it was slightly askew, placing his pen neatly atop the open pages scrawled with his neat cursive.
"A jury will obviously judge you first on your appearance, taking the stand in your dress uniform in place of civilian clothes gives the correct impression from the start." It was a trick he had learned early on, it was perhaps a little overkill but no one had ever doubted how seriously he was taking the sentencing of those he had put in those courtrooms. "Keeping your temper is easier said than done, lawyers will do all they can to antagonise, especially if they have heard you have struggled in the stands previously." A man in his position could not help but find defence lawyers slimy and untrustworthy. Of course it was just a job, but any career based in defending the scum of the city didn't seem like a job he could find peace in. He certainly wouldn't sleep well at night id this particular perp was to walk free again.
