Zestpaw trotted after Ravenstep energetically, eager to impress her mentor. The warrior headed towards their usual training spot, his apprentice on his tail.

“Today we’ll be training somewhere new. The cornfields.” Ravenstep said in his usual cold tone. “Hardly any battle takes place in a bright and open field.” He looked back at the apprentice, “You’ll find yourself fighting in the rain, dark, a dense forest, maybe even the city. You must be smart and use your surroundings o your advantage. Look at my fur, I can fight well in the shadows and night.”

Zestpaw nodded, briefly glancing down at her own bright pelt. "What about me? You can see my pelt a hundred foxlengths away." The apprentice asked with disappointment in her meow. "I mean, there's no way to change your fur."

“And you don’t think I stick out like a sore paw whenever I’m in a field” The deputy gave a small smirk before it faded away, “Considering you’re a tabby as well, I’d say fields with tall grass would be your specialty.” Ravenstep flicked his tail and halted at the cornfield. “Or a cornfield.”

Zestpaw twitched her whiskers happily, feeling reassured by her mentor. "Can we start practicing?" She asked enthusiastically, her normal hatred of battle training paused by curiosity.

Ravenstep nodded, “I want you to go in there and hide. I’ll give you ten seconds. After that, I’ll enter and try to find you.” His gaze darkened, “Even the most skilled warrior can’t hide forever, once I enter the cornfields, it’s a race to see who can find who first. The best advantage in a battle is striking first.” He started, “Now go.”

Zestpaw scampered into the cornstalks at her mentors signal, slowing her pace and curving in the opposite direction once Ravenstep was out of site. From there, she padded softly into the field until she found a clump of corn to hide behind, confident in her hiding spot.

Ravenstep flicked his tail as he counted to himself. “Ten.” His grassy green eyes lit up as he slid into the field. He kept his body low and his steps very light as he followed a faint trail. He knew his black coat made him stick out so he kept himself as close as he could within the shadows.

As Ravenstep grew closer, Zestpaw sensed his pawsteps. To her dismay they were too faint for the apprentice to tell where they were coming from. She perked her ears and focused her hearing on the padding sound of her mentor walking. Foxdung! I lost it. She scolded herself silently. Figuring the best option was to creep farther away, Zestpaw turned around to follow her plan. The small she-cat misjudged her space and whipped a stalk with her tail.

Ravenstep’s ears twitched at the sound, his curled his tail with delight and started to stalk towards it. He felt like he was in the city again, the rush of adrenaline as he’d have to constantly fight for his own survival. He stopped in his tracks when he caught his apprentice’s scent, rather then head towards her, he started to circle her.

After tasting the air and finding Ravenstep's scent becoming stronger, Zestpaw bolted in what she thought was the opposite direction of the smell. Instead of escaping, she almost crashed into her mentor, skidding to a clumsy stop on loose dirt.

The deputy gave a hiss as he was caught off guard by his apprentice’s abrupt charge. He wasn’t sure if it was one purpose or not, he turned towards where the she-cat crashed. He stalked towards her as he got a perfect view of her through the stalks, he took his time, giving her time to make up for her previous mistake

Zestpaw scrambled to her feet, quickly shaking soil from her pelt. Knowing that Ravenstep was close, she wasted no time slipping through the stalks as quietly as possile, heading away from their starting point. She tasted the air every few moments along with checking over her shoulder for a black pelt. A couple of minutes past. Zestpaw had spotted her mentor a pawful of times- just the tip of a tail or what seemed like a deep shadow through the corn - but now she felt a sneeze coming. Curse all this dust! She thought grumpily, bringing her paw up to her nose and slightly muffling the sound (not as much as she hoped).

How dare you. *covers Chickenscratch’s ears*) Chickenscratch swayed her tail happily and headed off to the forest. “I’ve only ever seen a deer once as an apprentice. I know they like to hang out around a clearing with a little pond.” "Let's go there then. I've never seen a deer before. Russet named me after one, I know. But you've seen a chicken before!" Fawnpaw tried to joke but it didn't quite make sense. She sighed in her head as she continued on.

Going to bed! Night🐟)
Ravenstep shook his head as he heard the muffled sneeze, he stopped once he was a fox length away from the apprentice. His bright eyes were a pop of color against the pale stalks, he eyed the apprentice, curious to see if she’d run or fight.
Chickenscratch wasn’t sure what Fawnpaw was aiming at. Of course she’d seen a chicken before! The clan raises them! “Yeah. My ma must have thought I was one to name me that.” She said as she ventured through the forest. “Deer are really funny looking as fawns. All wobbly with their long legs.” She chuckled before she came into a clearing.

gnight))
Zestpaw shook her head and glanced over her shoulder, the sight of her stone-still mentor startling the apprentice. Instead of running, Zestpaw settled herself in a crouch, claws dug deep into the soil, and waited for Ravenstep's move.

Ravenstep’s tail swayed slowly as he lowered his head. He was waiting for the right moment to strike, either a sudden move or Zestpaw slipping up and making more noise. Something. The deputy stared at his apprentice with his wide eyes, it seemed like he was taking it all a bit too seriously.

Zestpaw, having glimpsed at Ravenstep's pelt, tensed her muscles in preparation for her mentors attack. She hoped to counter his first move by simply barreling into him the first chance she got. Knowing the black tom, he'd have to be quick.

Ravenstep reminded himself that this was simply a training session. The tom decided to strike first, he readied himself before he made a sharp left and pounced towards his apprentice without a sound.

Zestpaw had readied herself for a simple move she'd been shown half a moon before- leaping into her opponents chest while they're in mid air. She was not prepared for the change of direction, which allowed her only enough time to turn around with confusion and end up pinned to the ground by her mentor.

“Who exactly was Russet?” Chickenscratch asked, she never spoke much to the apprentice. All she knew of her was that she wasn’t a fan of pranks, “Was she like your adoptive mom or something?”
Ravenstep kept his claws sheathed as he pinned the apprentice, “You’d be dead now, all I’d have to do is slice your throat. However some rogues like to play with their prey. Either way, always look for an opening with your opponents.” He twitched his whiskers, “You could sink your back claw into my stomach for instance or headbut me. It doesn’t matter how large or deadly the attacker is, we all have blind spots.”

Zestpaw caught her breath and nodded, although still looking flustered. "Like... this?" The apprentice stretched her hindleg up until she felt a soft underbelly and continued to motion a scratch, claws sheathed. She frowned when all her back paw felt was fur. "Ugh... my legs are too short." She groaned as Ravenstep hopped off her shoulders and she could shake out her pelt. "Plus every time I see a cat come at me, I just forget every move I've been taught." The young she-cat felt that she was disappointing her mentor.

Ravenstep sat up straight, rolling back his cut up shoulders, “That’s perfectly normal. That’s why we keep practicing. You need to have more confidence in yourself.” He said with a small nod, “Even warriors freeze up during battle. Hardly a cat is born with no fear.”

Zestpaw lifted her head with a sigh. "Okay. Thank you." She meowed gratefully, feeling reassured that she could improve. The apprentice gave her head one last vigorous shake. "Well, how'd I do before you caught me?" She asked cautiously. The young cat was always very self-critical but thrived on feedback nevertheless.

“Aside from bumping into a few stalks, you did well.” Ravenstep gave a small smile, “I had to rely on my nose rather then my eyes.” He said referring to the stalks helping camouflage the apprentice. “You should try masking your scent with mud or rubbing against the corn.” He said with a nod of approval, “Do you want to try again but this time I hide from you?”
