Finn looked over to her with a look of surprise when she said she’d join him. He really hadn’t expected that and wasn’t quite sure how to respond for a moment. “....Thanks,” he ended up saying. He’d been all prepared to group up with the other careers and dominate it. Even with the new partnerships, he’d expected to just charge in and fend for himself. But Demi was actually going to come with. She was going to have his back. Maybe that did deserve a little bit of respect after all

“No need to thank me. We’re partners at the end of the day,” Demeter said with a shrug “but I’m warning you now that I’m only going to kill if I need to, I don’t relish the thought of killing other tributes. Especially not kids.”
Her gaze wandered to the younger tributes in the Games; Ellie, Elias, Pascal. She wouldn’t kill those unless they attacked her or were, by some miracle, the last tributes between her and Finn and victory.
She couldn’t help but laugh internally when he looked at her with surprise. Clearly he’d thought she had intended on ditching him as soon as they got into the arena. Which, of course, she didn’t.

Finn didn’t respond at first. He knew he would kill, but he also knew that he couldn’t force her into doing that. He just hoped she’d be smart and kill when she had to. After all, she wasn’t going to get out of this arena alive if she tried to talk her way out of everything. Some of these people were just as ruthless as Finn... maybe even more.
“Look, I still don’t trust you and I’m not happy about being a partnership, but we will need to make this work somehow. I’ll do some stuff that you want me to do, but you need to learn how to fight and you need to be willing to kill if it comes down to it, okay? That’s how the game works, and there’s no getting around it.”

“Don’t worry about me,” Demi nodded firmly “I’ll kill when I need to, I’m not afraid to do that if necessary. I just mean... I’m not going to run around hunting people for fun or just kill people randomly at the bloodbath. I’ll only kill if someone is a threat to us or if it helps us survive. It’s the point of the game, after all”
She had accepted that she would become a killer. Nobody could win the Games as a pacifist. Plus it would make her look weak and make her more of a target. She turned her gaze over to the weapons.
“I plan on picking up some weapons skills. Oh, and for the record, I don’t trust you either. But for now we have incentive not to kill one another and stick together so that’s all we’ve got. It’s more to go on than past tributes have had.”
That was true; they could trust eachother slightly more than past tributes had been able to, which was a bonus. Alliances were less precarious. In theory, anyway.

Kill randomly at the bloodbath? That was the best way to get ahead. You needed to kill to win and that was the best way - when everyone else was a faceless, violent enemy. The longer they lasted, they would get a name. They would have a more human side. It was the easiest way to kill.
He nodded. They didn’t have to trust each other, but they had to work together. They could do that. He sighed and rubbed his forehead. “Let’s just... get on with training,” he suggested.

“I know you don’t agree,” Demi said after a moment “and that’s okay. I wasn’t taught like you, I’m not a career. I don’t know how to get into that mindset and think of people the way you need to when you’re in the arena. I’ll get there, I have no doubt. In the meantime, I can have your back during the bloodbath and make sure nobody kills you .”
He said they should get on with training, and she took that as the end of their conversation for now, as she focussed on what she was doing. While they were talking she had completed one of the more basic traps (she’d attempt a more complex one afterwards) and she was quite pleased with how it had turned out.
She picked up a stick to test it, grinning as her snare snapped into action, locking the stick in place. That could catch them a rabbit or a person. If they set those up around their camp intruders into their area wouldn’t get far, and it would catch them food at the same time.

Alexander resists the urge to laugh. He wondered why none of the other districts aside from the Careers trained for these the games. "Least you hit something." He picked up a knife and shows her how to properly how it. "It's all in the wrist and in your arm. Best place to aim is the face, neck, right between the eyes and best of all chest." He pulled his arm back and throws the knife. The knife whizzes through the air and lands right in one of the dummies eyes.

Finn wasn’t sure she’d ever be in the mindset he was. It took years of training and mentally preparing for the games. Would someone that had been raised differently find it harder to kill? Would they ever be okay with killing? Finn didn’t think so and he honestly hoped that the answer would be no. At least some people could keep their humanity then. The Careers lost most of theirs years ago.
He was thankful for her backup though.
He watched here test her trap as he finished up with his shelter. It was barely big enough for two people, but it was sturdy and would camouflage well into the woods. Hopefully the arena would be a forest this year. Or a beach. Water was his strong suit.

“Looks like we have all the makings of a good camp here,” Demi said, looking at the shelter and at the working trap. The only other thing they’d need would be a fire, and she was sure Finn would know how to make one
She looked at the weapons area and figured it was finally time for her to try and pick up some skills there. Though she was a little bit nervous at the thought that she might mess up in front of Finn or look weak in front of everyone.
“I’m going to go practice with some weapons,” Demi said to Finn
But it had to be done. She stood and headed over to the weapons area, picking up a bow. She figured that if she was going to be covering Finn’s back at the start of the Ganes, a long-range weapon should be her priority. She would try picking up a sword later on.
She made a lot of beginner’s mistakes in terms of her stance and her aim, and so she hit the bottom of the target but not the centre. She was just relieved she’d actuslky hit it and she wasn’t totally terrible at this.

“Or they take one another out,” Cordelia mused, though she knew that was very unlikely
She headed to the next station with him, beginning to work as he asked her another question, one that made her pause for a moment as she thought. She’d been so focussed on he arena she’d never even considered afterwards.
“I guess what most winners do; give lots of money to my district, have my parents and sister live in luxury, be paraded around the Capitol whenever they like. Do their little apology tour around the districts saying sorry that their kids are dead. Then mentor some poor kids at the next Games as if I have any idea what I’m talking about. Funny thinking we could end up being mentors at the next games. What about you?“ The mention of the victor's tour brought back sour memories to Marcus's brain. He had always felt the apologies were forced when the victors came around. Never genuine. Always scripted. And the mentors...that was a fate worse than death to him. To have to develop relationships with children and then watch them die each year was one of the cruelest parts about the games. If he was being honest, he didn't know if he could do it. The whole "victors thing". There was a reason a lot of the victors ended up going crazy. "I dunno. If I won, I'd probably do the same. But I would hate it. I don't want to be come another one of their pawns." He said with a sad smile.

Hearing that Joel was Ashlynn's brother made Jaxon frown in sympathy. Letting out a curse and a low whistle, he shook his head. "That sucks. I'm sorry. He was brave to volunteer though to protect you. Does that mean we can count on him as an ally?" He asked. From what he could tell, Joel would be a great person to have on their side in the arena. Hopefully he could trust her brother and his partner not to kill him.

He pulled his arm back and throws the knife. The knife whizzes through the air and lands right in one of the dummies eyes. Noticing Alexander's smirk as he watched her failed attempt at throwing a knife, Octavia became determined to get it right the next time. Listening carefully to his instructions, she picked up another knife and copied his instructions exactly. "Alright...let me try again." She said, watching him throw first so that she had more of an idea how to do it. Seeing him stick it in the eye of one of the dummies, she nodded, impressed. "Nice. My turn." Copying him, she threw the knife, invisioning hitting the chest since it was the largest target. When she hit it, it was more in the stomach, but it stuck, and she grinned widely. "I did it!" She said, proud of her new skills.

“Yeah, I’d hate it too. Just because I spent my life training for the Games, that doesn’t mean I love them like some of the others do. I’ve seen it be as much of a death sentence for the Games-fanatics as those who cried when they were reaped. But in the Games there are only two options; lose your life, or lose your freedom, privacy and possibly your sanity.” she said.
As she spoke she continued to work on making the tools and weapons. It seemed to be going decently well, though she had no prior knowledge of how to do this so she was learning from scratch. By the time they’d finished at the weapons station, though, Cordelia had been throwing with deadly accuracy.
She didn’t like the Games and the didn’t like the Capitol, not that it was safe to say that here. But she knew to question that Capitol would achieve nothing apart from getting her into trouble. She would probably be killed off in the Arena, and she’d come to the conclusion that the only reason dying in the Games was worse than what happened to victors afterwards was that if you died in the Games you were instantly forgotten.

With a sigh, Marcus gave a laugh, "Seems like no matter what, the odds are definitely not stacked in our favor," he said, mimicking the capital's ridiculous quote that rubbed pretty much everyone the wrong way.
As they talked, Marcus had been working on forming a spear out of a long stick. It was rough looking, but he had wittled it enough that the tip could have been considered deadly, in the right hands. Holding it up for Cordelia to look at, he tilted his head. "Think you could use something like this in the arena?" He asked with a skeptical grin on his face. Not in her skills, per say, but more at the roughness of his homemade weapon, compared to the ones that would be provided, but most likely found in the Cornocopia.

“Pretty much,” she said with a chuckle “not even the careers really have good odds, because most of the time they survive until the end and one of them backstabs the rest of them and wins. But that’s the whole point of the Games, I guess. The districts would just rebel if they just straight-up executed 24 random kids every year. And that’s all this is, really, if you think about it. A big, showy execution for a crime committed 100 years ago.”
But they would have to participate just like everybody else and not make waves. Everyone knew the Games were awful, but the Capitol were vicious to anyone who said so. Plus they were probably listening to Cordelia and Marcus now. She hadn’t said anything really bad about the Capitol yet, she didn’t think, but she might have if their conversation had continued. And that wouldn’t have been good for her or Marcus.
When he held up the spear, the girl nodded.
“Yeah, I probably could. I’d just have to practise a bit with it to get used to the weight difference. What about this makeshift bow? Could you use that? With a few arrows of course.”

Finn didn’t comment on the beginnings of a camp. Sure, they did, but there was no guarantee they’d be staying in one place forever. He looked down at his shelter and then over at her trap. He could make a fire for sure.
When Demi said she was going to do some weapons. He crossed his arms as he watched her pick up the bow and arrow. While he was certainly better at short range weapons, he did know the basics of a bow and arrow. “Like this,” he said after her first shot. He grabbed another bow and arrow and demonstrated a better stance before shooting. He hit closer to the center than she had, but not perfect.
***
Ash frowned slightly at his reaction to her news. She knew that nobody would want a sibling in the games. She didn’t want sympathy, but maybe even just sharing that little bit would help her partnership with Jaxon. At his question, she shrugged and looked over at her brother. “I hope so. I think... I think Joel will be willing to help us, but I have no idea about his partner,” she said. Later she could talk to Joel. See how his partner was and if he was willing to work with her and Jax.

She couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed with her weapons abilities when she could see all of the careers doing so well and she was barely hitting the area of the target she was aiming for. She could feel her cheeks warming. But if she wanted to get better, she needed to do this
“Thanks,” she said in response “I have barely any idea what I’m doing. I never really had a need for a weapon at home.”
She could run for miles, sure, and she’d feel comfortable in any natural environment, but she couldn’t really use any weapons. She had no idea what she was doing.
But when she imitated his stance and tightened her grip a little, drawing her bow back that bit further, she found that her arrow was much closer to the centre. A few more shots, some little adjustments, and she’d be perfectly capable with a bow. Maybe not an expert, but she’d be able to kill someone with it if she needed to once she had practised a little bit.
“Thank you,” she said again. She might be better at him in a few skills, but she had to take advice from him in the skills she was bad at. He was a career, after all, and was much more prepared for the arena than her
