(And to the first question. Yep, only certain characters are mages, and that’s the ones that you want to be mages. You’re all good, so no worries.
By the way, posts do not have to be long, I expect a paragraph at least, but I understand being busy, or writing on phones and such. So do the best you can, and it’ll be fine.)

"If the legends are indeed true, than I think we're all better off if they're dead." said Erik flatly. According to the legends the Darkest possessed terrifying and unnatural powers meant for evil. Not many these days believed all the legends of old, but the tall blonde blue eyed boy had always been deeply superstitious.
"What if the legends are wrong?"
It was Wes who had asked, his question not directed at anyone in particular. Not that any of them had the answer.
"Y'all really don't believe that hokey-pokey stuff?" scoffed Oliver, no mild beating could take the spark out of the feisty thirteen year old.
"The Council says it's true, so it's true." stated Erik firmly.
Through the whole conversation Wes hadn't looked away from Lorelei.
{Right now I'm debating if I want Wes abilities to have to do with light or something more along emphath or telepath lines. Erik was meant as a throwaway but is growing on me. He's just a normal human though. Still wouldn't want to be punched by him lol.}

Sybella stared at him from under her hood and attempted to understand what was happening. She was not familiar with compliments from someone other than her father and she was not sure how to deal with it. "I like my hood too." She stammered. It felt almost involuntary, but she did not mind it too much. It was a change to not have someone look at her with fear or disgust.
She snapped out of her mind drifting off with her hood being complimented when he began to try to pay full price. There was something about someone giving her handouts that she did not like. It was as if they saw her as being less than them and she was not about to let them believe that. "Do not pity me." She said in a harsher tone than before without intending to when she saw the amount he gave her. She separated the discounted price and pocketed it, handing him the extra. "I refuse. Go." She waved her hand, gesturing for him to leave because she believed his business was done at her stall.

(I like Erik, and Wes is kind of adorable in a way? I mean in his attitude. He’s so soft spoken, but blatant.)
Lorelei frowned at them, arching an eyebrow. Her eyes gaining a kind of fired light, “My parents died due to a person who followed that legend through and had those abilities. It’s not some hoax,” She snapped. But her eyes rested on Erik next, narrowed, “And why exactly are those abilities bad, what if they did use them for good?” She asked, and looked at all of them next, “And what about that kid, Holly Starsong who was killed, or the numerous other children and people who may have been innocent but we’re killed due to that superstition?” She asked, and looked at Wes next.
“He’s right, what if the legend is false? What if those with the ‘darkest Hearts’ could really bring about more good? What if the council is wrong?” Her eyes looked at Erik next, questioning in her gaze. It wasn’t a secret that she was disconnected from the community in some ways, and it was less of a secret about her dislike of the Council’s methods.

“Wait!” Daphne called, his eyes wide. “Please take this, I want to do more good then bad, and I really feel this would be better to have then give up. And even if this doesn’t help you, then pay it forward to someone else, I have no need for it any longer anyways. Think of it as payment for serving me,” He put out, eyes narrowed as he put the money closer to her again, but sighed. He heard a voice call not far away, Kyoko, and his eyes widened, “I have to go,” he told her, frowning apologetically, “My sister is laid to rest, and it’s time for me to go gift her these flowers, thanks again!” He called, running off to meet with his elder sister, and leaving the money behind regardless.

(I can't post rn since I have to go soon but I did have a question: Mind if I make a character with a true dark heart?) (Oh trust me I got one that’s a true dark heart too(they haven’t really been introduced yet). So go ahead!) (Differences quickly. ‘Darkest Heart’: A Cursed, all with powers are considered to be this. ‘Brightest Heart’: Unmentioned part of the prophecy/legend, and moreso a myth. The brightest heart is unknown, and if any exist is unknown. ‘True Darkest Heart’: The intent behind the legend, the true Darkest is marked(by a symbol of some kind), and only a real few exist. They are regularly more powerful, or ‘darker hearted’ then the others. They differ from even power Dark Hearts, but aren’t obvious. The true legend is unknown, and until discovered, the true differences between a Darkest and True are unknown, to the common public, the brightest and true darkest are unknown identities, and foreign ideas. These are commonly thought and known to carry through with the legend, becoming murderers, killers, and corrupting. Though your darkest heart(or true darkest, must rarer characters) don’t have to be evil or have dark abilities, they can. ;3.)

{With Wes I just went with a new character to try and I'm still figuring him out. He's kinda stuck-up and occasionally rude, but also really shy and sometimes sweet? idk what this boy wants.}
Erik groaned inwardly. He had to put up with these bumbling idiots all day, and now Lorelei Carlos was getting testy with him too. What a drag. Didn't anyone in this godforsaken town have anything better to do?
Erik's eyes narrowed with a thought he did not speak. If they are good why did your parents die? "And countless more have died at the hands of Darkest Hearts than of the Darkest Hearts that have been caught."
The unspoken thought hung heavy in the air. At least, Wes felt as if it did. He looked down at his own hands. The blue veins were visible under his milky white skin.
Erik's gaze softened as he looked to Lorelei, he knew this was a tender subject for her. "Look, no one relishes in the fact that we sometimes have to kill children. But we save countless other by doing so. And even if they do start out as children, they can't help what they become. It's better to kill them while they still have some good ij their hearts before the blacken completely. If we wait until them they're doomed to eternal damnation in the afterlife." Not only was Erik superstitious, but he was one of the few Old Believers left. Most people, especially most of the young ones did not have any patience for the gods or rituals of old. The only reason the other boys didn't dare laugh at him was because they were already well acquainted with the strength of his fist.
Wes clasped his hands together to hide the shaking. And what if the Council was right? Was Wes really doomed to die before he had a chance to live like little Holly? Or would he go mad like the Darkest Heart that had killed Lorelei's parents?

"Wai-" Sybella shouted as Daphne ran off to his elder sister. Once she noticed he was too far away to chase without her products being stolen, she let out an audible sigh. Her eyes wandered to the money he left on her counter and her eyes filled with a mix of annoyance and sympathy. This boy was mourning the loss of his sister and he complimented her own hood by comparing it to his late sister's eye color. He was a kind soul who just wanted to do good. Sybella was not familiar with that, especially since she is often someone who does not care about other people. She is the type of person to keep walking when she sees someone fall down. It's exactly what others would do to her if she fell on a busy street. She found her hand picking up the money and examining it to make sure it was real. It was. She slid it into her pocket and patted it, making sure it was secure. Back to work. She thought as she adjusted her hood and began to call for people to come to her stall.

Lorelei growled, her anger increasing, but a feisty calmness remained. “If all Darkest Hearts are evil, then why have so many died protecting normal citizens?” She all but growled, but again, calmly, with a sweet smile plastered on her face that didn’t even reach her eyes. “And Erik, I don’t need your sympathy,” She pointed out. The seemingly little fearless girl then turned to him specifically, a straight face shown, and her voice controlled, “And if you have so much faith within the gods, then why do they allow this to happen? I believe it’s our choices that determine our path, not predetermined fate. But even with what you speak, do you really think that if you found out you had abilities, or what if one of your friends did, or I did, would you report that? Would you get yourself or them or me killed?” She asked, eyes gaining a serious, but soft look.
Lorelei then backed up slightly, her anger had lost a bit of its control, and despite her control over her abilities, she noticed a nearby water puddle, and it looked like it was freezing. Though that wasn’t very odd given it was a cave city, it still differed from the others. She blinked at it, as if in confusion, though she understood exactly what it was. Her attention went back to them, crossing her arms, leaning against the wall behind her. “Because that’s exactly what happens to the darkest, they die, without having a chance to defy fate.”

Kyoko almost snapped at Daphne, her blue eyes blown wide and her golden-orange hair pulled back into a ponytail with a blue elastic band. She was wearing a nice blue dress, but looked on in absolute fury. “What took you so long?” She snapped as she watched her younger brother out of breath.
“I was getting flowers!” Daphne said, and sighed, “And I saw someone who reminded me of her, I couldn’t just ignore them!” He pouted, eyes wide.
“Okay, stop. No one will ever be like she was, she was unique and she is gone.” Kyoko said, sadness entering her gaze, but she shook it off, grabbing his arm and dragging him off to visit their sisters grave alongside their parents.
As they passed, a small translucent girl appeared, invisible though, unless you were a Darkest Heart. Her eyes watched them, before turning forward, and she faded off again. Green eyes wide, ominous as they watched.

Erik did not really want to get into a fight with some girl. But with a ragtag group of wild boys standing behind him hanging onto his every word, he knew he couldn’t back down. Most of them had been raised to think they ruled the city. With their parents in government they were above the law. Very few realized that their leader, Erik Larsen, was actually the only thing holding them back from causing real trouble.
If Erik let a little girl challenge him like that, he would lose the respect he had finally knocked through their thick skulls.
“Look girlie, if you just wanted to yell at me why did you ask what I thought?” Erik rolled his eyes.
In true Oliver fashion with no ability to read the room (err street?), the boy piped up again in what he thought was a very helpful manner. “You know why we don’t trust the Darkest Hearts? Because it’s people like them that murder and hurt people. Like your parents!”
Before Lorelei had time to react, Erik had already roared. “OLIVER!!”
Between the enraged Erik and likely soon to be enraged Lorelei, Oliver tried his best to shrink away behind Wes in the back of the group.

Lorelei listened to him, rolling her eyes, keeping check on her emotions, on what she said. The 17 year old almost spoke, but closed her mouth when she heard the next words spoke by Oliver. She wasn’t expecting her parents to be brought up, and really, that was her weakness, her parents, and when Oliver’s said it, her dumb tongue worked faster then her mind, and her voice was eerily calm, but anger filled.
“So people like me are the reason my parents are dead?” She snapped before she even realized what she was saying. But when she did, she regretted it deeply, she couldn’t hold her dumb tongue down. She was so good at controlling her emotions, but her parents brought up a dark topic, and she let that crucial detail slip.
Her eyes were wide in shock, and a bit of fear, her blood felt cold, way too cold. She went to back up, but a Wall was behind her and she collapsed against it when her knees gave out, falling onto her bottom and looking down at the ice spreading from her hand onto the lightly damp ground. Well, it was too late to go back now.
Pulling her hand up, she stood up, eyes still fearful, if not strange now with a type of odd lavender-blue glow, she looked to the side, plotting an escape. The argument was dead to her now, she knew she needed to go, before they reported her, and before she was killed. But she did want to gauge their reactions, see if perhaps they hadn’t caught what she said, or see if they were too ignorant to understand, she doubted it though. Or maybe, just maybe she could chance changing their minds. Either way, an escape plan was formulating in her mind.
(She has water abilities, she can control any water, be it Ice, water or vapor. Just to clear up.)

{Is Lorelei by chance inspired by the Lorelei of legend?
Also, hard time deciding if I want Wes to be an empath or to have the ability to manipulate light and maybe one day create illusions. Idk. If anyone has thoughts or ideas they would be appreciated.}
Lorelei was in luck. All of the boys had been too distracted by Oliver and Erik to pay the lavender eyed girl any attention.
All except Wes. His eyes had never left her for a second. Silver, like two stars trapped underground.
Wes expertly stepped away so Oliver could no longer hide behind him. Erik hd turned as soon as the younger boy had spoken, so he had not seen Lorelei's little display. The other boys were familiar with Erik's temper, and new what was coming. They circled around the pair like jackals.
The raven haired boy took advantage of the distraction to dart over to Lorelei's side. He grabbed her arm and helped pull her back up to her feet, and did not let go once she was standing.
"Hey Erik, I'm walking Lorelei home." announced Wes back to the rest of the boys, but they were too engrossed in poor Oliver's self-inflicted beatdown to pay much attention.
"Act normal." hissed Wes in low whisper so only Lorelei could hear. He glanced around. Erik and his gang of boys had thankfully been the only ones around. Wes seemed as if he was the only one who had been keen eyed enough to see what Lorelei had done.
The coast seemingly clear, he began to gently pull Lorelei away from the scene. If they ran into anyone else it would hopefully just look as if Wes was being exceedingly gentlemanly.

Lorelei stopped, almost laughing, no one noticed! Good!
And then Wes approached her, and she backed up moor, forming more ice underhand before he told her to act normal. She blinked, standing up with his help, her stubborn attitude wanting her to push him away. She refused to do so until they were out of ear shot, taking a few steps, controlling her shaking. She mumbled darkly, “Well I just made a very dumb mistake, huh?” She questioned, seeming to talk to herself at first.
Her eyes glanced at him, narrowing, “I doubt your silence means any good, I hear they give a hefty loan for turning in a cursed.” She sputtered, silently. She moved her arm slightly, looking at him, eyes glowering in suspicion. “But you seem to good to do that, so why are you helping me?” She asked, her nerves calming down from her panic. She was genuinely curious.
Near them, however, the ghostling appeared, green eyes wide. Only those affected by the curse could see her, and her short black hair bobbed lightly from her movements. She was translucent still, but formed behind Lorelei, her eyes looked to Wes, but she remained silent, only smirking darkly at him, and remaining there for the time being. She wanted to test him, if he could see her, maybe he could help her.
(Holly is mischevious, in comparison to Lorelei(Lore) and other characters. She’s a truly chaotic character, but has a ‘good’ heart.
And yes, Lorelei is slightly based and inspired by the siren in mythology. Yet I thought it would be way cliche to make her have siren abilities, so I went with water instead.)

"Sorry about that."
Wes did not seem that interested in answering Lorelei's questions.
"Oliver is a good kid, I swear. He just has no understanding of the word tact."
He let go of Lorelei when she pulled away.
"And Erik? Well, Erik sees the world in black and white. He's a righteous man, but his views are oversimplifi..."
Wes suddenly stopped speaking, trailing off. His already pale face had gone white, as if he had seen a ghost. Which in sense was true.
{I think the water powers are cool. There are some good folk songs about the legend.}

(Agreed :3.)
Holly smirked, walking forward, and it seemed that as a minute ticked by, that her body returned, exactly 9 years from her death(I changed that up a bit, sorry, there are plot reasons for that, instead of 10 years, it was 9 and she died at 7). Her body began physical at the exact time, and her green eyes lit with life, her body flowed for a second in the darkened area, and she looked at them both, a necklace, a crystal of sorts, was worn around her neck, and it too was glowing slightly.
Lorelei was about to respond, telling him not to worry about it when he froze. She looked confused, but heard footsteps behind her, within a moment she formed a icicle in her hand, turning, ready to fend off an enemy if need be.
The young 16 year old girl just smirked, looking between them both, except, like the crystal around her neck, one eye had went from green to a pretty magenta color, the right eye that is. “Well, this is nice, seems that ‘9’ really is my number,” She said, mre to herself than them. She looked at Wes then, tilting her head slightly, “You look as if you saw a ghost,” She pointed out, grinning.
“Excuse me, who are you?” Lorelei demanded, though she kept her voice low, her eyes were alight with confusion and annoyance.

A while passed and nobody attempted to come to Sybella's stall so she decided to pack everything and leave for the day. The only sale she made was with that boy who complimented her green hood and he paid full price. She subconsciously reached for her pocket, almost as if she was checking to see if what happened was real. Once she felt the money in her pocket, she pulled her hand away and even though she did not smile, her permanent frown lessened just slightly.
She packed her goods in several bags before stepping away from the stall, placing a sign that her father made saying that they were closed. It was simple and made out of wood, he used a knife to cut out the phrase, Come back tomorrow! so customers would return again. Her father was always able to make people happy and smile but no matter how hard she tried, she never could make people enjoy her presence. Maybe she was just a weird person who would not have any friends. She grew to accept that years ago. Sybella began to walk away from the sign she placed but made sure to look at it once more before it would be out of her sight. Her next stop would be at the local pharmacy to see if she could afford the medication her father needed, or at the very extreme, painkillers for him to die peacefully if it came to it.

Holly's skin stopped it's odd glow, she looked like an actual human, albeit with one red eye. Her smirk was full of mischief, and she crossed her arms, kicking her back leg up, leaning against the wall behind her. She looked at Wes, then Lorelei in her sneaky little way, eyes narrowed in humor.
Lorelei remained hostile, looking at Wes before back to Holly, waiting for the girl to speak.
"Name's Holly," Holly said, blinking her odd eyes, smirking darkly, "Holly Starsong."
"Holly's dead," Lorelei snorted, but looked at Wes, scanning for his reaction.

“I am Holly,” The girl persisted, her smile faltering. She sighed, frowning at the two of them. “Fine, want proof? My name is Holly Astra Starsong, I have two siblings, my elder brother Daphne and elder sister Kyoko.” She started, looking unimpressed and annoyed. Her eyes shifted quickly to glance away, “As Darkest Hearts, you two should understand the seemingly impossible, praeteritum prodere et memoriae.”
Lorelei glared at the girl, but refused to speak. Confusion shifted in her gaze, she didn’t understand Latin, so Holly’s last remark remained unknown to her. Yet she raised an eyebrow, how exactly was stating a name and some siblings names going to be proof. And how exactly did this girl know that Lorelei was a Darkest Heart, and how in the world could Wes be a Darkest?
(Holly’s last phrase, “praeteritum prodere et memoriae” means ‘and memories of the past’ in which she means to reference her looks, and the manner of death she experiences. Though part of her comment could be directed to Wes, dependent on his powers.)

{Uhhhhhhh, I still can't decide what Wes' power should be. Help.}
"All of that information could be found by asking around or looking through the old city Council Records." challenged Wes. Despite everything he had seen Lorelei do earlier, and all the things that he himself knew he was capable of. He just couldn't find himself to believe this girl that claimed to be Holly Starsong. Holly Starsong was dead, and there was no coming back from that.
"And I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not one of the Darkest. I don't know what you're talking about." the lie sounded rehearsed.

Holly laughed then, genuinely laughed. Her sardonic nature shifted a tiny bit. “What about this information?” She questioned walking closer. “9 years ago today I died, and I was stabbed in the back. I was killed on Hercules Street.” She winced slightly, holding her hand out, and making sure no one other then them were there. With a chant, a bright ball of magic formed in her hand, and she turned to them. “I had, and still do have my powers, and if you still think I’m lying, then fine. I don’t blame you,” She pointed out, and turned, the ball of magic disintegrating. She shifted the fabric of her shirt down some to reveal a scar from where the bullet had entered her once dead body, and then looked at them. “You can check the grave too, but all you’ll find is dust and a strange caved in grave.” She murmured. Then she quirked a smile, crossing her arms, “and this is a bit of information the public couldn’t get, but after my death the kitten was adopted by my family, the cat I saved, and her name is Hecate.” However, that whole thing about the cat may have been useless to mention regardless, but she loves cats, so she decided to do so.
Lorelei still looked confused, and shocked. Yet she was still mistrusting of the girl.
Holly then looked back at them, crossing her arms, ‘And before, before today, no one could see me unless they were a Darkest Heart. And you looked like you saw a ghost, and you kind of did. So, yeah, cut the shtick, it’s not like I’m going to report you. I’ve been dead for 9 years, it’s not like I care.”

This strange girl and Lorelei may both be darkest Hearts, but there was no need for them to know that Wes was too.
"So, suppose you're who you say you are. Why are you here?"

“Yes, they are different, I wasn’t alive then,” Holly said, rolling her eyes. “Congratulations you learned how to listen, I’m so proud.”
Lorelei sighed, looking between them both.
“Because I’m going to fulfill the legend, but not in the way you might assume,” she quickly stated. “Or, really, I plan to defy it. The only way we live is if we run. If we fight for our lives. I don’t want to lose mine again, I don’t want to die again,” she added, looking at him.
(Maybe mind reading, or lie detecting.
Or even, like, telepathy of some kind?)
