Ah, she was perceptive. Normally it took them a lot longer to be asking the questions Crystal was asking. That was fine, Lorelei would answer these questions for her. It was more fun to keep being mysterious but she sensed that wasn’t the answer here.
“Can’t a girl take a walk?” Lorelei returned with a raised eyebrow in response to the first question, before continuing “and let’s nust say this isn’t my first time in a situation like this. If I had been armed I would have been able to take care of myself but as it is I wasn’t.”
The final question was the easiest to answer, and probably the one that would draw Crystal in. She needed something to keep Crystal guessing, to keep her wondering about exactly who Lori was.
“I see everything. I see you and your armour and your weapons, and I sure as hell saw the great dirty giant holding me”
There, hopefully that would pique Crystal’s interest, have her wondering. With any luck she’d be trying to work out of Lori was a demigod, but then unable to figure it out because Lorelei didn’t appear to have any powers.
She’d never guess that her ability to see through the most was granted to her by Hades. She wasn’t aware of a time she’d ever seen through the mist before meeting Hades, anyway. But maybe she had always had the ability, even she had no idea.
Her boss would be very happy with her now; she could almost hear him chuckling, almost see him grinning. This was good. Hades seemed particularly excited about this job, so it was just possible that it was big enough that she would be granted her freedom.
Maybe. Though she was probably naive to imagine that he would ever set her free. She could very well spend eternity at his side, suspended in age. She couldn’t age while she was in Hades’ control, which was a perk, she supposed. She was yet to see the effects of it though as she’d only been under his control for a couple of years at most. She had a feeling she had a lot longer to go, though she always hoped that he was going to set her free.

Crystal raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Not only could this girl see through the mist, but she had also done this before and not been the damsel in distress. She definitely hadn't been expecting this when she ran in to kill the giant. "You don't seem like the kind of girl who would scream." She wasn't an idiot. Even if the girl was good looking, that wasn't enough to distract her from the details. She'd been doing this too long for that.
From what she could tell, this girl was either a demigod that had been out here on her own for years. Or she was a mortal with the ability to see through the mist. Either way, she'd apparently trained herself to fight. She ran her eyes over the girl's body, noting that she had some scars. Not as many as herself, but enough to show she'd been in some scrapes. So she probably wasn't lying about any of it. Still, she didn't seem like a damsel in distress. If anything, from the comment she'd made about trash talk, even in that situation she would have been insulting the giant or trying to convince it to let her go.
This wasn't her problem anymore though. She'd saved the girl and killed the giant that had been living in the area. Hopefully they would be long gone before it finally reformed in the underworld. She had to get going though, she couldn't let herself get detoured. "Well, if you're okay, then I'm going to get going. Do you live nearby? I can escort you home. But I have something I need to get back to, so I can't spend too much time here." As interesting as the girl was, the artifact was more pressing. She needed to find it and destroy it before someone else decided to take it.

“I’m not the kind of girl who would scream,” Lorelei responded “but in this instance I was unarmed and there wasn’t a whole lot I could do to defend myself. I figured a scream would draw out anyone who happened to be around here and could help me. And it did. Had I been armed it wouldn’t have been necessary, but I wasn’t and I needed to get the attention of anyone in the immediate vicinity.”
This girl was even smarter than Lori had first thought. It was just as well that Lorelei knew what she was doing. She simply couldn’t afford to mess this one up or she might never be freed. She needed to get this right.
It seemed as if this girl believed her though, from the way she was examining her scars, Lorelei’s hand moving instinctively to the one on her collarbone when she could see Crystal’s gaze on it. If only Crystal knew that the scars on Lori’s body (most of them at least) weren’t from monsters but in fact from ‘heroes’ just like her. The kind who had fallen for the girl’s trap hook, line and sinker but has tried unsuccessful to fight her at the last moment, when she’d already won.
But this girl seemed a little different. More observant and cautious. It would be more difficult to convince her.
“Oh, I live nearby, but I can get myself home just fine, thank you. Out of interest, though, what is this thing you have to get back to oh-so-urgently? Surely it must be hard being out here all on your own.”
She knew the girl was on a quest, and alone. If she could pull at that thread, make her feel like she wanted company, she might just be able to wrangle her way into joining Crystal in her quest. And then she could execute Hades’ plan.

While I was thinking, I had an idea. Maybe she has to go to the Rockies to get an exact location. Then she either needs to go to Chicago or San Antonio, TX for the actual artifact. Then has to go to LA to get to the underworld and get the artifact/Lori back.))

Crystal nodded slowly as Lori explained herself. She was making a lot of sense, so it was probably okay to drop the scream thing. She did look like she could take care of herself now that a giant wasn't holding her in a death grip. "Guess you got lucky then." She almost hadn't decided to go this way, but she'd wanted a bit of an isolated walk. Better to be completely alone, then alone in a crowd. She rolled her shoulders and adjusted her backpack a bit, showing off her many scars on her arms. She had even more under her camp t-shirt and jeans, but she wasn't exactly someone who showed off.
Crystal nodded again as the girl mentioned she lived nearby, and that she didn't need an escort. "Then be careful I suppose. And don't forget to stay armed at all times." She was about to turn away when she kept going. "Sorry, I can't tell you." She couldn't exactly tell a random mortal that she was on a quest from the Gods of Olympus to find an ancient key to the prison of the Titans. Not a very good idea. Even if she could see all these things, that didn't mean she wouldn't think she was crazy. Plus, this was a secret quest. No one knew about this except her, the gods, and Chiron.
Then she sighed heavily. Well, she wasn't wrong about it being lonely. "Yeah, it's a bit lonely. But I work better alone. Other people would just slow me down or get in my way." She didn't want to sound mean or condescending, but it was just how it was. She had more experience than most other demigods. Most things were just instinct at this point, and she would do things without second thought. Other campers would fall behind, or end up getting in her way. It was easier to go alone than teach someone how she worked. She still had some life ahead of her, she could have company later. Maybe becoming an instructor at the camp was the best thing to do after this quest. Retire.

This girl was tough to crack. She was determined not to tell Lorelei anything, not so even give a hint. There had to be something she could do. If there was a way to show that she understood the things Crystal was talking about, maybe that would help.
“Be careful,” Lori said with a small smile “pride goeth before the fall. Two heads are always better than one.”
Crystal could always afford to learn something from others, there would always be areas where she had weaknesses and others had strengths. It would cause her trouble in the future if she believed that she worked better alone. And Lorelei could cause her that trouble if she wasn’t careful.
“Alright, well then good luck. I suppose I’ll see you around.” she said before looking her clothing up and down “hope you make it back to camp.”
There. Something to spark her curiosity. She wasn’t a demigod and had never been a camper, hIt she knew about it from Hades and she’d been up against campers before. Just like now. But if the camp knew about Lorelei, they certainly didn’t tell their campers about her. She was probably classed among Hades’s minions and monsters. She considered herself neither.
With her last statement, the girl started to walk away, but not too quickly. She was hoping Crystal would changer her mind. The girl wasn’t about to ask to directly be a part of the quest because that was too obvious. She had to make it seem like it was all Crystal’s idea to have Lori with her.
And if she didn’t take the bait, Lorelei would just have to find a way to follow her somehow. Hades would be able to help with that. Though, if she failed now, she’d definitely be stuck with Hades for a few years longer than before. Hades didn’t like being inconvenienced and he didn’t like having to go to Plan B. Which meant that Lori has to get it right every time. Otherwise she’d be in trouble.

Crystal had heard the advice before from Chiron. Because of it, she'd decided to take someone with her on one of her quests. That person hadn't come back. Two heads didn't matter if one of the heads died. She didn't like other people getting hurt because she wasn't fast enough to protect them, which is always what ended up happening. Others would get overwhelmed, they would need her help, and she was never able to do so. It was why she refused to travel with anyone. It was easier to start alone than end alone.
Crystal was about to turn away when the girl mentioned camp. She paused, then looked after her. She knew about camp? Sure, she was wearing the t-shirt, but that didn't tell people it was where she'd come from, or what it was. This girl knew, she had to. Well, it wasn't that big of a surprise to be honest. Other campers would be shocked at how many mortals actually knew about the camp besides parents. It wasn't the best kept secret. But she had to know how this girl knew. "How do you know about camp?"
She didn't want this girl to come with her, even if she knew things and could take care of herself. She was on a quest she wouldn't want to bring a trained camper on. In all honesty, she didn't expect to make it back to camp herself. The thought of bringing a mortal girl was one of the worst thoughts she had. So why was she considering it? She didn't have to tell her why she was doing this, it was easy to keep secrets if one knew how. Plus it might be nice to have some company for a bit, cause there was no way this girl would follow her across the country.

There it was. She’d managed to intrigue this girl enough to have her asking questions. This was perfect. All she needed to do was keep the conversational power, and she had a good chance of finding her way on this quest.
She stopped, looking over her shoulder at the girl for a moment before turning around fully, one eyebrow arched. This was her opportunity, this was her chance. She just needed to keep this girl on the hook for a little while longer.
“Oh, there’d be no fun in me telling you that. All you need to know is that I’ve seen that shirt before.” Lori responded
This part of the job, she didn’t mind. Mainly because it gave her an opportunity to talk to people, even if she had to manipulate them in the process. But she didn’t like the next part, the bit she and Hades had planned. Once Lorelei had stolen the key, her next step would be to kill Crystal. That part she detested, and the guilt followed her constantly while Hades was unaffected. Hades simply said that any mortal life, even half-mortal in the case of demigods, meant nothing to him. Which showed Lori exactly where she stood in his eyes.
The girl hated that she was one of the reasons why campers never returned.
But now wasn’t the time to think about that, Now was the time to focus on Crystal, the focus had to be on this part of her mission. She could worry about her conscience later, probably when she tried to go to sleep that night.
If she failed now or at any point, if she didn’t kill Crystal later on, she would get years added to her time with Hades, or worse. He had threatened before to keep her there with him forever. He had all the power, because he had her soul. And there was nothing Lori could do but do what he told her. All she hoped was he would give her her freedom someday soon. But she doubted it.

Btw, I did mention that Crystal's got an Irish accent right?))
Crystal raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms again. "Well aren't you mysterious." She didn't really understand why this girl was suddenly being so coy. She glanced at the sun, then back at the girl. She needed to get a move on. She had to get to Colorado as quick as she could. The longer she spent talking to this girl, the more time she lost. After being told about the quest at Olympus, her father had pulled her aside to talk to her privately. He'd told her that Hades had been against the destruction of the key, and that he still might be a little angry about this or that. She honestly didn't know at this point. But her father was worried that he might try and get the key for himself, try and use it to gain a little more power. It wouldn't be the first time he'd tried to take Olympus after all. She didn't understand these grudges that immortals held. Just because you could live forever, didn't mean you had to hold on to your anger for that long.
Crystal sighed softly. Time to finish this conversation. "So it's obvious you want something, and I need to get going. So you might as well tell me so we can move on." She was intrigued by the girl, yes, but she still had a mission to complete. "If it's a kiss with your savior or something, that'd be corny but doable." She might as well try and fire back a little, but she wasn't really the banter type. She was an action girl. It was easier to leave the talking to those that had an excess of charisma. Like children of Aphrodite or Apollo. She was all about being a leader, a warrior. It was what she was good at. Even if she didn't like those she lead dying.

"As crazy as it sounds, I'm fine without the kiss. But thanks anyway" Lorelei said with a smirk. She might have been told to be flirty, but she wasn't the damsel-in-distress type of girl who wanted to kiss a random girl just because she'd saved her. That just really wasn't her style.
Ah, so this girl was no-nonsense. Straight to the point. That threw Lorelei off a little bit, but that was okay. She just had to adjust her strategy a little bit. She could do that.
"Alright, so here it is," Lorelei responded, "I think I should come with you, wherever you're going. We're both big girls, it's not like I'm another camper you have to be responsible for. I can take care of myself, so long as I have a weapon. And I want to get out of here and go and see some places, travel. And I'm not obligated to come all the way with you; if I start to get in your way, I can bow out. Why not?"
She knew she had given up a little bit of her mysteriousness but she needed to make sure she went with this Crystal girl. If she failed she would be in trouble. If this girl wasn't going to play Lori's game, then Lori would just have to play hers. As long as she did what she needed to do, it didn't matter. Certainly Hades wouldn't care
|
|
|
Post by ScorchR on Oct 24, 2018 12:45:20 GMT -5
Crystal shrugged a bit at first. "Your loss." She figured she might as well play a little, but she didn't see a point in going too far. She then raised an eyebrow as the girl in front of her continued. Travel with her? Well that would be a really bad idea. For multiple reasons. She didn't want this girl to figure out what she was doing. The last thing she needed was someone knowing her mission. Plus she might be able to take care of herself, but some monsters out there weren't easy to take on. She didn't want to worry about protecting this girl if they got in a fight. She wanted to say no.
But, there could be some bonuses to this. Traveling with a mortal might actually mask her presence a bit, and weaker monsters might not notice her. It would make things a little easier. Maybe even enough to take public transportation and make things faster. Probably still not a plane, even if her father was the lord of the sky. Last thing she needed was a monster boarding the plane and turning it into a fireball. Still, things would be easier. The biggest thing would probably be the company. It would be nice to not be alone for a while. If anything she could tell this girl to leave if it got to a point that she couldn't bring her along anymore.
She took a deep breath, weighing the pros and cons of this proposal for several moments. Eventually, she came to a decision. It probably wasn't the best one, but she could handle consequences. "Alright. I suppose if you came with me if wouldn't be that big of a problem. Couple of terms though. First, you can't ask about where I'm going or why. I'm sworn to secrecy on the River Styx. Second, you have to listen to my orders. No matter what. So if I tell you to run or hide, you better listen. Third, I'm not protecting you. You say you can take care of yourself, so if we get into a fight you have to prove it. I can't be thinking about you in combat or I'm going to falter. So if you get hurt, don't blame me." She figured that last one wouldn't happen, at least on her part. She would still think about the girl and probably try to protect her, but at least she could pretend like she wouldn't. "Sound fair?"
