Needlepaw didn't even flinch when Nighthawk finally spoke up, but she cringed at his words, casting a look of sympathy to Rivermoth. Your vigil, her own words, echoed in her head again. There were many warriors who could let you get away with having fun and chatting while on duty, but Nighthawk would never be one of them. Thornfang cast a glance back at Rivermoth, feeling bad that she had been on the receiving end of the black warrior's harsh criticism, but he couldn't disagree completely. If everyone stuck to focusing on the patrol, it would be a lot less stressful to lead, and his fur had started to prickle toward the end of the conversation behind him. Droppaw looked at the rest of the patrol, the silence more dreadful than anything Nighthawk could ever say. "T-Thornfang..." he finally muttered. He wanted to break the silence more than anything. "I, uhh..I think I could use some help with bird hunting...? Its, kinda hard for me still."

Thornfang paused, before giving a sigh. A part of him was relieved that Droppaw had asked for some help, though. "Alright, Droppaw." He meowed. He glanced around toward the rest of the patrol and decided aloud, "Rivermoth and I will take Droppaw hunting, and Nighthawk, you and Needlepaw continue to Breezeclan's border. We'll meet back up with you around Stoneclan's border."
Needlepaw huffed, but she didn't complain. She knew the tense dynamic between the patrolling cats was getting to Droppaw, and she would deal with Nighthawk alone for his sake, and his sake alone.

Nighthawk nodded, relieved that Thornfang would be taking the she-cat off his paws. He already had one annoying cat to keep track of--he didn't need another. Nighthawk looked down at Needlepaw, seeing that trademark bratty grimace in her face. He sighed, rolling his eyes. "Well? Are you going to start hunting, or just give me that face all day?" he barked, tail twitching with irritation.

Needlepaw's tail flicked, irritated by Nighthawk's tone. "I thought we were going to Breezeclan border, weren't we? Excuse me if I'm wrong." She snarked back, but she picked up the pace and started back in the direction Thornfang had been leading them before.
Thornfang lead his apprentice and Rivermoth into the forest towards the direction of the Gathering Place, his ears alert for the sound of nearby birds. He had to admit himself, bird hunting was one of the more difficult skills to master. He appreciated that Droppaw knew what he needed to learn.

Rivermoth followed the tom and apprentice, Nighthawk's scold burning into her fur as she slowly made her way deeper into the forest. She quickly shook her head and turned her attention back to the surrounding forest. Her ears swiveled as the birds began to chirp above her, alerting to each other of the warriors presence.

Thornfang kept his meow quiet as he explained to Droppaw, "When hunting birds, most of the time you had to get them out of a tree. Unless the branch is low enough for you to jump from below, you need to climb the tree and catch the bird with your claws before delivering a killing bite." He meowed. "If you have someone hunting with you, one can also scare the bird down to the other to jump and catch."

Nighthawk gritted his teeth. And so it began. He careened forward, stomping in Needlepaw's path. "I don't care, what Thornfang said," he hissed slowly. He had little patience in general, but none moreso than for his apprentice. "Like it or not, he is not your mentor. I am. And I say you're going to practice hunting. Understand?" His claws glinted against the morning sun that dripped through the forest canopy. He flexed them in and out of the dirt, quelling his attitude.

Droppaw listened, nodding every so often. He looked a bit worried as he thought of climbing a tree; the apprentice had a great fear of heights that critically embarrassed him. Still, he knew that he needed to get over it to show his mentor that he was a capable apprentice and future warrior. "Right.." he nodded, a bit absently. His attention was now mostly focused on the prospect of being high up off the forest floor, balancing on a rickety branch, all the while stalking prey. It spooked him, quite frankly. "Um..could I see...a demonstration first...?"

Rivermoth moved around Thornfang and Droppaw, slinking her way up a tree. Her ears quickly pinned against her head as she spotted Nighthawk snapping at Needlepaw. The she-cat turned her attention away from the pair, having already gotten in trouble with the grumpy tom. She continued her way slowly up the tree sending birds flying away into the safety of other nearby trees.

Droppaw followed Rivermoth with his eyes. She made it look so easy...his ears deflated against his skull, feeling even more sorry for himself.

Rivermoth looked down at the apprentice, seeing the sad look on his face she quickly made her way down the tree. She stopped on a branch just barley above the apprentice. "If I can climb a tree with horrible balance, then you can do the same." The warrior meowed jumping down to the side of Droppaw. "I don't even have a tail to keep me balanced, you do. I'll climb right beside you so you don't fall." She promised, poking him with a paw to try and encourage him to start moving.

Needlepaw shrunk down toward the ground as Nighthawk snapped at her, but she still looked him in the eye, not submitting completely to his authority over her. She nodded. "That's fine." She meowed, and she turned her gaze and ears to listen for prey as she lifted herself up high again. Her mentor may have been strict and harsh, but he taught her how to hunt well. She could sense the tiny heartbeat of a squirrel close by. She stalked toward the scent of it, and away from Nighthawk.
Thornfang rested his tail on Droppaw's shoulder. "You don't have to do it that fast right now," He rumbled, "And I want you to stay on the lowest branches to practice."

Droppaw smiled, a bit more hopeful this time. After a pause to size up the tree and determine his goal, he nodded. "OK...I'm gonna do it," he sighed nervously, and padded up to the tree. He looked over at Rivermoth, hesitation creeping back to him. But as he watched her begin, and he began to copy her moves, he didn't feel so anxious. The small blue tom pushed himself up onto the bark, now suspended by all four paws. His heart raced in his chest. He was actually going to do this.
Nighthawk watched Needlepaw, sighing to himself as he released his anger through his nostrils. He was at least satisfied that she was complying, albeit begrudgingly. He watched as she stalked after a squirrel he scented several tail lengths away. The large smoky warrior sat and observed, curling his tail over his paws.

Thornfang watched from a crouched position in the overgrowth below, ready to come and catch the bird if it flew away from Droppaw low enough for him to catch. He noticed how much it helped the apprentice for Riverbird to guide him along each step, and took note to teach him like that more in the future.
Needlepaw moved a tail length away from the squirrel before darting after it. Just like Nighthawk had shown her, she chased it up to a tree, catching up with it at the base of the trunk and then blocking its way with a swift paw when it tried to run up the tree. With a swipe of her paw, she flung it off of the trunk and then finished it off with a killing bite while it was still shocked from its fall. She took the prey in her jaws and brought it to her mentor, her tail held high.

Nighthawk watched her come back with the rodent. He remained steadfast in his expression, but he was pleased with what he saw. He finally nodded, grabbing the squirrel from the ground. He rose to his paws and gestured with his chin over towards the Breezeclan border. "Another," he simply stated.
