Honeyfur is once again annoyed at how Blacksky ignores her mother's feelings, very loudly complaining that he has the "emotional range of a doormouse" while passing by him at camp. Gazingflight, Honeyfur's closest friend, tries to shush her before Palestar punishes her for following the footsteps of her mother, albeit on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Privately, Honeyfur apologizes to Blacksky. She explains her family's origin story. Poppytail's first mate didn't love her and was a bad father. He left them one day to live his his other mate, breaking her mother's heart. Since that day, she's been possessive and desperate for love. Being her kit, Honeyfur wanted her mother happy but she never believed that her mother would stoop to such lows.

Poppytail is exiled for attempted murder of a kit. She stands before the clan's judging eyes. Before she is escorted out of camp, she turns to Blacksky and says a quiet apology. Honeyfur cries as she watches her mother get chased away but she does nothing to stop it, instead only burying her face into Gazingflight's fur.
As soon as it is over, Blacksky is seen visibly revealed but forlorn. He mutters his condolences to Honeyfur before leaving to visit his kit.

Honeyfur doesn't react well to her mother's death, going into a depressive state. The once fiery she-cat is now only responding to Gazingflight and Blacksky. It comes as a shock to the older tom but he starts confiding in the two, comforting the she-cat. Talking about their feelings helps the both of them and soon the clan goes back to normal, now with a slightly more social Blacksky.

However, one morning, he requests to take a walk in the territory by himself. Despite worrying if the tom would be safe, Pebblefang allows this. He is missing for the day and a patrol finds that he passed on, curled up by a stream peacefully.
