Squirrelblaze appears to Swanmist whilst she is out gathering herbs. He explains that he is no longer technically living, but is a sort of ghoul-like monster. He is forced to constantly eat to stay alive, but only has to do this for the first twelve moons of living like this. Apparently, Moosestar is not actually Moosestar, but a strange duplicate of him, coming to take over the Clan - and Squirrelkit was his first victim. He warns her to return to the Clan immediately, and he will return Moosestar to them in time. However, it's too late, and the evil duplicate has killed several cats, and fled. Faced with a disaster, Swanmist communicates this knowledge to Pebblefang, who dutifully waits for Squirrelblaze and Moosestar to return.

(Squirrelblaze is Moosestar, having ambushed and targeted his brother and ate him. Then transformed into him, taking the lives of Thornpaw and Squirrelkit as well. Moosestar tells Swanmist the truth about his identity, and Swanmist promises to keep it a secret. Hopefully, Moosestar will be able to be a loyal leader whilst still recovering from his condition. He also reveals that as he has taken up Moosestar's identity, he's trying to "Split" Squirrelblaze from himself, explaining where Squirrelblaze went that way.

Corn approaches Swanmist terrified, given the news he had heard that she had seen Squirrelblaze previously. But his news is not of the ghoul, but the information of a cat’s remains, and rather than cause a panic, wants her to see for herself. The two journey into AppleClan territory and the sight forces Swanmist heart to drop, the scattered and eaten remains of Moosestar lie about, evident that not even StarClan could restore damages to the devoured organs. With this information, it is clear Squirrelblaze has been lying to her, there was no second individual. And the cat currently “being,” Moosestar is Squirrelblaze himself. Swanmist tells Corn to keep this under wraps from the Clan till they figure out how to defeat it. (Ghouls devour the living, and can transform into those they have eaten. However marks can remain, I’m using the damage to Squirrelblaze’s belly as the ghoul’s “hooves,” as an indicator that he is a ghoul and masquerading as others. Their condition is also permanent and he will be very hard to kill.)

(Nope! Moosestar is a bunch of dead pieces and scattered organs.
And given Squirrelblaze was a dead corpse previously, the only “cure,” is to kill the ghoul.
And Squirrelblaze can also turn into Squirrelkit or Thornpaw as other transformations. (The rules weren’t too specific on this so I’m putting it as only transform into your victims.)

(Unfortunately Swanmist lacks the knowledge to deal with a ghoul, and showing Moosestar’s body, or what remains of it, would just horrify the Clan and cause a panic. And it’s better to probably keep Squirrelblaze in plain sight anyway.)

(Welp! That certainly gets rid of the ghoul problem!  I had no way of how to take the ghoul down with one blow, but this works!) Eventually the torn and devoured remains of Squirrelkit and Thornpaw are found by Swanmist, Pebblefang, and Corn. They tell the Clan the two cats were torn apart by a badger or fox, that had hid its kill in a messy manner. Corn is distraught but had accepted the fact his son was among Squirrelblaze’s victims.
