While rescuing all of the kits that snuck out of camp, the patrol sees the kits have found trouble of their own, with Stormkit dead from the jaws of a large fox. To save the remaining kits, Leo, Iceclaw, and Opal are killed. The Claw is blinded and must retire to the Elder’s Den. Redpaw returns to the Clan, telling them that she has discovered The Dark Ones. Apparently, they are actually a psuedo-Clan who call themselves CherryClan, and have been attacking AppleClan because they fear that AppleClan will attack them. She begs for her and Goldenheart to go and help CherryClan become a full Clan. Birchstar agrees, and that night, Rowanstar's spirit appears to Redpaw, saying that she will help guide her and Goldenheart with helping CherryClan.
