Stormpaw and Mitten are found brutally murdered. Squirrelheart, who was on patrol with them, survives, but is traumatised by the attack and unable to talk about who killed them, and as a result retires.

Squirrelheart suffers a mental breakdown after recurring nightmares of Stormpaw's and Mitten's murder, and starts attacking the Clan. Grassystone only manages to stop him by forcing him to eat deathberries, but is left distraught afterwards. Froststar comforts him by telling him it was the only way to save the Clan, but Grassystone decides to leave the Clan. Emberpaw, still not a full medicine cat, becomes Rapidclaw's apprentice, and a rouge skilled in herbs joins the Clan.

Flamekit, Fieldkit, and Crowkit run away. Whilst out searching, Squirrelheart is found on the territory, badly injured, but alive. Angelwing and Rowanspirit are glad to see him, and Squirrelheart rejoins the Clan, explaining that he was kidnapped by rogues whilst out on patrol, and 'Squirrelheart' was actually a duplicate. He explains that Ace is evil. However, before they can catch her, she poisons Flamekit and Fieldkit, who were found, with deathberries. Ace is killed, and Birchfeather becomes a medicine cat, as she has basic medicine training. Several other cats who have taken Ace's medicine sadly die in the following days.

A loner with kits at her side arrives at the clan. The cat claims to be a scorned lover of a warrior from another clan and seeks refuge for their kits since her ex refused to let her join their clan. She is allowed to join but refuses a clan name for herself. Her kits accept clan names, however.
