As some time passes, the water doesn't go back down. Prey becomes scarce as the creatures have either left the land or have drowned. Sickness breaks out and little can be done to heal the ill as all of the herbs have been washed off the land too. Tansyheart decides to come out of retirement as the young medicine cat Sablewish is quickly overwhelmed with sick cats.

The medicine cats report StarClan has gone silent. However, they offer wisdom that makes Ashstar realize what must be done. The forest has been destroyed. There is no more prey, no more herbs, and in a short while no more land as water continues to flood everywhere in sight. At the next gathering Ashstar proposes they leave the forest for a better home somewhere beyond the territories. Having sustained terrible casualties from the storms as well, the other clans agree. They decide to head off for greener pastures within the next few days so the clans can prepare for the journey.

*Before Ashstsr's tragic death
The leaders deliberate for a long time, but are unable to a come to a unanimous agreement of what to do. The other clans had lost all their kits already due to the natural disasters and most do not wish to linger around any longer and wait for the rest of them to perish, but to make the kits travel such a distance whilst only days old would end in their deaths. Ashstar then asks the leaders to wait a little until the kits are ready to travel otherwise Ashstar will not take her clan with them on the journey, and the leaders reluctantly agree.

While recuperating from the illness, some kind of bird, one larger than the Clans are used too, flies down and scoops up Ebonykit and a MintClan kit, Scarpelt and a large MintClan warrior somehow succeed in clinging onto the bird’s tail feathers, as it is about to fly higher with the kits. Scarpelt loses her grip on the bird and falls to the camp floor, there is a resounding crack as the scarred she-cat’s legs break as she meets the ground. A few moments later, the bird is brought down by the thrown off balance from Scarpelt, and then MintClan warrior slams with all of his might, as he clings to the large creature. Unfortunately the strange bird releases the kits, and their screaming yowls are only silent once they hit the ground, as two mangled and broken bodies. The MintClan warrior crashes with the bird, and is somehow uninjured, but the way he runs over to the remains of the MintClan kit, is clear that there will be emotional hurt. As the clan travels they encounter a rock slide. Most escape but Snakestrike and Rustslip are caught by the slide and crushed.
As they most be on the clan runs into more loners looking for a new home. As the clan get a better look at them they recognize them immediately as the missing apprentices Rosepaw and Bramblepaw. It is revealed that all three apprentices had survived falling in the river and had been living outside the forest as loners for moons. They had learned to fend for themselves and took to calling each other by their first names. The three cats were just starting to create a family together when the excessive rain flooded the forest. They lost Duke to the water as they were driven from their homes before coming here to find AppleClan again. The clan cats welcome the two cats back and continue their journey.

The Clans continue traveling, Springdash tries to ignore the ocassional glances she is given. The other leaders had been fairly obvious in their manner at how they disliked a mere deputy to share their role, as she was not a true leader. She had expected Beechstar to try and be warmly towards her after the incident with the strange bird, but the golden brown tabby tom had become colder to her instead. After several more days and a few more casualties, the four clans finally escape the areas effected by the flood. They take refuge in an abandoned twoleg building and hunt and rest for a while. The leaders come together and start deliberating on where they should go next. Springdash has the idea to follow a nearby marshland, but the other leaders ignore her. Feeling more cast out than ever Springdash sneaks away from the rest of the cats and goes off to hunt to clear her head. On her walk she is suddenly visited by a vision of Ashstar, who tells her that StarClan still walks with the clans and as the true AppleClan leader they will always be by Springdash's side, and then Ashstar disappear s.
