Some of the apprentices sneak out if camp to check out the swollen rivers. On their way they are attacked by a badger, who was run out of its home due to the flood, and it chases Rosepaw, Bramblepaw, and Duke into the river. They are swept away before anyone can rescue them. A search party searches for their bodies but they are never found. They are presumed dead, and the clan mourns the loss of the apprentices.

Yep, good luck Lana! You gunna need it  )) Another storm passes through the clan, bringing even more rain than usual. The clan is forced to find camp on higher ground, and during the move Larksong slips from a cliff and falls into the river. Her mate Briarclaw jumps in after her without hesitation, and before she can be swept away he pushes her to a fallen tree by the shore where she is able to be saved by the other warriors. Briarclaw was unable to save himself however, and is swept away by the raging flood to his watery grave. The clan mourns his loss, especially Larksong, who was pregnant with their third litter and never had the chance to tell him before he died. All four clans worry for the fate of the forest, as the water doesn't look like its going down any time soon.
